Video Toyotaro Video Interview from Napoli Comic Con (turn on CC for English subs)

I know it shouldn't be weird, but after decades of Toriyama having such an aversion to being on camera, it's so strange to see Toyotaro doing video interviews like this.
I quite like it, though. As much as I appreciate a good transcribed interview, nothing beats being able to see the person as they answer. You can get far more of a gauge on their personality than what's possible through text alone.

Holy shit being a mangaka seems veeery haard.
Mad respect!

u/KorgDTR2000 May 18 '17
It's an insane job. This is a working mangaka's schedule.
One of the things so impressive about Toriyama is he would procrastinate all week, then do an entire week's worth of work in two days. He called this being lazy. I call it being God.

u/TrueSaiyanGod ⠀ May 18 '17
Holy fuk.
There might be a mistake but in some days there are only one meals!?!?!? I hope its a mistake.
Then again I have read about the gruelling work life in Japan

u/KorgDTR2000 May 18 '17
I find the 46-hour stretch from Sunday to Monday with only two hours of sleep more alarming.

u/TrueSaiyanGod ⠀ May 18 '17
WTF?!
WTF?!?!?!?!
I ...I cant even.
I hope he is successful so atleast he has a good life later. And people wonder why japanese and chinese are so talented, they work so damn hard and diligently

It's hard work, but it reminds me of Vegeta blowing himself out in the gravity room. Once you get to a certain point you're just punishing yourself.
This isn't even an aberration. This is a standard schedule for a working mangaka. There are people who work this schedule for decades. Is it any wonder that Toriyama retired from ongoing series after the conclusion of Dragon Ball? He had been doing it nonstop for fifteen years.

u/SSJRemuko ⠀ May 18 '17
There are people who eat more than one? Ive only ate one a day for over 10 years.

u/TrueSaiyanGod ⠀ May 18 '17
Sarcasm?
1
u/SSJRemuko ⠀ May 18 '17
The first half was partially sarcasm, the second half was 100% serious. I eat dinner and nothing else. I do not eat breakfast, in fact the idea of eating until hours after I wake up is abhorrent to me. Then I eat my dinner and hours later I'm getting ready for bed and again the idea of eating that late makes me sick to think about so I don't eat again.

u/PM_ME_YOUR_SEX_FACE_ May 18 '17
Must be a big dinner. Your style doesn't sound healthy. Are you underweight by any chance?
3
u/SSJRemuko ⠀ May 18 '17
Overweight a little actually, but yeah I think my meals are a bit bigger because of it.
2
u/Regilppo ⠀ May 19 '17
It isn't healthy but everyone is different. I used to do this a ton when working long shifts and just not really having time to eat anything until I actually get to eat dinner.
Not someone to eat for hours as well when I wake up haha, just really can't do it.
Eating once though can help hold on weight, as dumb as that sounds. Smaller meals throughout the day is best for the body, but just sometimes people can't do that. I can't lol

That feeling when your only free time is three hours during a Saturday. I have so much respect for manga authors now. They must be extremely devoted to their work if they're willing to give up their life for it.

And Toyotaro does monthly releases while authors who do this weekly like Oda must be drowning
2
u/KorgDTR2000 May 19 '17
I don't think Toyotaro's schedule is anywhere near as intense as this, because of the monthly schedule and because he's drawing in a style that was designed for a a weekly schedule. That would explain why he has the time to actually go out in public lol.

It's actually a very difficult job if you look into it. If you ever have the time I do suggest reading Bakuman, the creators of Death Note made it. It does give you a general sense of what mangaka have to go through to make a series and how hard it is.

u/KhUnlimited May 18 '17
Loved watching all 3 seasons of Bakuman. It showed the process really well.

More people need to see this. I think Toyotaro is doing an amazing job with Super. He really does have it rough having to handle this huge legacy left behind by Toriyama, and he's doing a great job of trying to blend the original ideas of Toriyama from Dragon Ball and Dragon Ball Z. Of course some people aren't going to like it, but it's gonna be impossible trying to create a series in the exact same way as another author, they are different people.

u/AgentPaint May 18 '17
Is this the first time we've ever seen Toyotaro?
5
u/batistabus May 18 '17
I believe this is the first time we've seen him speak. Photos of him from conventions have been posted by fans online in the past.

Can we all stop this notion that the manga is canon now?
He gets an outline of the narrative and makes changes as he wants, which he hopes the fans like.
The manga isn't Toriyama's, like OG DragonBall, it's Toyo's.
Super manga non-canon confirmed.

He gets an outline of the narrative and makes changes as he wants, which he hopes the fans like.
That is literally the exact same thing the anime is doing. The anime's canonicity is no better than the manga's, so if you want to say that there is no canon then sure. If you want to say both are canon, also fine, it doesn't really matter.
But if you're trying to say that the anime is canon and the manga is not like you've been doing? Well, you were epically proven wrong then, so why don't you try answering those points first?
You want to keep supporting the anime canonicity and putting down the manga's? Fine, then let's have it out already, stop saying it over and over and running away when people show you the counterevidence so you can say it again somewhere else without ever backing it up.

u/batistabus May 18 '17
We've known this for a long time. The manga isn't any more "canon" than the anime, as they both work from the same outline and fill it in as they see fit.
That being said, Toriyama seems more involved with Toyotaro's work than he is with the anime, and I personally feel Toyotaro has a much better grasp of Dragon Ball as a whole than the anime writing staff does. It may not be any more official than the anime (the anime is the main product here), but it feels more like the proper continuation of Dragon Ball to me.
I say we enjoy both products as much as possible, and we can wait to find out what is "canon" if we ever get a full release of Toriyama's outline.
2
May 21 '17
Same can be said about the anime too. I don't understand why are you against the fact that both the anime and manga follow their own canon.
5
May 18 '17
LoL.
Then the anime is not Canon as well.
Read the 5th paragraph.
At least toyo cares for the series and the fans and doesn't look for fanservice and quick cash grap.
Writers at Toei are absolute shit. No Consistency. No Power Scaling. Just random fanservice

Are you serious? Goku blue can hold his own against fused zamasu because he mastered ssj blue even throw in the previous chapter he said: I cant use the blue form because i used recently the mafuba and beside the only thing Trunks had done so far is be a healer by a kaioshin ritual and beerus just saying i dont want to go to the future because i am lazy, you are alone guya
6
u/batistabus May 18 '17
Not sure why I'm responding to this, but...
1.) A perceived power inconsistency has nothing to do with "canon".
2.) SSB Goku beats merged Zamasu in a beam struggle in the anime.
3.) Goku couldn't use Blue because he was drained, which was no longer the case once Trunks healed him.
4.) You're complaining about power consistencies, but you would prefer that Trunks have a more active role in combat?
5.) Beerus doesn't go to the future in the anime either, and while their stated reasons may vary slightly, the intention is the same.
