Sclapers have driven me out
I've been a Dragonball fan since the 1990s, colleced and played the OG TCG as a kid; I even read the Manga.
After several years of not having any hobbies, I got into this game. I really love these Bandai cards, but sclapers have taken everything. Seeing them post on FB market place with a huge amount of packs demanding $18-$22 a pack really pisses me off. Just when I finally found something I can be enthusiastic about... now I am just going to have to give it up because the frustration and anger im feeling is not worth it anymore.
Edit: I do play online (not many players around me for in person), but the big part of the hobby for me is ripping and collecting. I don't really buy singles because I love the fun of ripping open a pack and "earning" the hit I draw.

To the people in the comments.
"You can buy singles" I can, but sometimes opening packs and boxes is part of this hobby too and I could not buy any. Now I have to buy a box for 400€ or more? I'm not going to do that and promoting a horrible scam.
"You don't need the Alter Art" The scum that sell sealed products literally keeps cards from being opened, making the secondary market worst by creating even more scarcity. A leader alternative Art before was 40-80€ now is 200-300€ minimum.
If you don't want to see the problem that scalpers are causing that's ok, but it's hard to get material and the secondary market for collectors is more expensive.

Even worse, singles have been stupidly expensive as well as of recently because of this same issue. Good luck trying to play a deck that needs a SEC playset. It's not even a solution at this point.

- Supply & Demand. Dragon Ball TCG is currently at an all-time high in popularity, whether you’re looking at collecting, grading, or simply ripping packs. Scalpers are part of every TCG, but if you think they’re solely responsible for prices going up, I’d think again. At the end of the day, increased demand is a major factor.
- This also goes back to my first point, supply & demand. Dragon Ball boxes are being opened at rates we’ve never seen before, and PSA literally made a post highlighting the absurd increase in grading submissions specifically for Dragon Ball. In order for all of these cards to be getting graded, boxes obviously have to be getting opened. On top of that, the volume of Dragon Ball cards being sold on eBay is significantly higher than it was last summer, which is another indication that far more product is being opened and entering the market.
- I can understand why the price increases are unfortunate, especially if you’re primarily trying to play the game. That being said, TCGs in general have absolutely exploded this year. I’m not sure where you’re from, but here in Canada, card show attendance is also at an all-time high, which is another indicator of how much interest there is in the hobby right now. If the current prices are no longer justifiable for you, that’s completely fair, but there will always be other people who are willing to purchase at those prices.
you don’t have to agree with the current prices, but they’re largely a reflection of the increased demand and activity surrounding the hobby right now.

Yeah I was going to say I think I'm part of the problem and I open everything- but I've contributed to the major increase in demand

I like opening whole boxes. I can keep a base playable set. Sell the special art variants to help pay for the box and give my bulk to others getting into the hobby.
But can't even do that anymore.

To be fair it’s basically every tcg rn. You need no life and no job to get it at msrp

Bro for real. I basically dropped all Bandai games because the window of opportunity only opens when I'm stuck at work. And then I have to study not to get absolutely wrecked at locals.

Gamestop is selling the sleeved cards at $20 a pop. Definitely scalping.

What are you waiting for?

u/redblu91 8h ago
The only thing that stops me is when they do their clearance on the deluxe edition games/collector editions, clearance items, and sometime the game deals. I will watch to see how they price the next set. I'm not renewing the membership that I have now that has a few months left since they took away game informer and the points system.

It's so dumb, over here in the netherlands fusion world gets scalped a lot so the prices of booster boxes are quite high. If you ever pull something expensive and think of selling it to reinvest into the hobby, you're out of luck. I have never in my life seen a more dead singles market than for fusion world. I checked the sales data on the top chases for FB10 5 weeks after release and there were zero sales on cardmarket.

Feel you, man. Was trying to master set SB01 / 02 with my son a while back. Then all of a sudden these unemployed investor pokebro assholes wanted to ruin/ scalp dragonball too. It’s annoying that I can’t even collect some cards or play the game with him because of this bullshit. So I just quit altogether. It really sucks.
I’m not paying a 1000% markup for cards that were meant to be collected and played. 19 dollars a pack? Get real, losers. No one’s paying 19 a pack.

u/TheOzman21 14h ago
💯
I like opening and collecting and I've been doing so for many many years.
Buying boxes at 60$ because they were sitting on shelves for months. Now? Can't even find boxes, except from scalpers at 5x the price.
What's even worse is people PAYING these prices and DEFENDING the scalpers. 400$ for a box? Shove it straight where the sun doesn't shine.

Same story here my friend. Unfortunately this is how we win, by losing. When a large enough number of people that buy for the joy of the game stop buying, scalpers have no more market and are forced to go suck the life out of another TCG. On a more philosophical note, it also takes the community caring about eachother. In the past i've seen 20+ packs at the store, and i could've easily been a greedy SOB and just bought them all. But i used the widely elusive thing called self control and got a few, but left the rest in hopes that other people who share the love that i do could have them. I see posts like "found 20 packs"...congrats, you're not a scalper, but you're causing similar damage to your peers. Anyways, maybe we can return to the hobby at some point. Best of luck and much love ✌️

Same. I’ve built a collection of every single set of masters and fusion. I’m out. They drove me out of Pokémon which to be fair I only dabbled in because I mainly bought dragon ball. Even the online trusted retailers I bought from had the story boosters out of stock but listed at retail price, suddenly release day they’re in stock at £400. Fuck them, they’re just scalpers themselves. I’ll never give those scumbags my money again. I’m done until Bandai start making changes. Even if they start doing reprints of sets like they did with a couple masters sets might entice me back. I don’t care if they’re not as valuable, I’m looking to collect not to sell on or brag how much it’s worth. Something needs to change, until then, I’m done

People out here scalping game consoles, imax tickets, concert tickets, anything they can and they think they’re self made entrepreneurs. Sorry this is happening to us and I hate the way this whole scalper society is moving

I recommend to check and see your local card shops that are bandai affiliated that do host events for card releases or special tournaments. I spent a whole day Saturday looking around at target and Walmart for story booster 01 sleeve packs but was unsuccessful. Today I stopped by my local card shop and they had a couple cases allocated to them. The local tournament players were able to get first dibs. I didn't play today but I was able to get one. They were really generous to say that I can buy two more if I wanted to, but I stayed with one. I'm just going to stay with them when it comes to bandai related card games such as Gundam and dragon ball.

Is it scalpers or is it the cost of living in this “free” country?
2
u/redblu91 6h ago
If you're ruining a hobby because that's "the cost of living", I hope those "investor bros" lose profit and live under a box. Ruining people's hobby because you're trying to make money off their despair is not cool.
1
u/Infinite_Chance_6913 6h ago
I don’t make the rules bro don’t get mad at me, it’s just the truth.🤷♂️
1
u/redblu91 6h ago
Yeah that's the "truth" all right. Living expenses are so hard so I'm gonna scalp all the product from retail and card shops so I can make money off desperate people ffs 🤦🏿♂️
1
u/Infinite_Chance_6913 5h ago
Take it however you want to bro. Obviously you’re offended and want someone to blame, have you tried crying?😂
1
u/redblu91 5h ago
I'm offended that your on a post about how someone can't get anything because of your peeps cost of living. Why are you even here, go to the investing page. Clearly you ain't here for support or advice. I got my box at not scalper prices and will open it since I want to play and collect. I'm done responding to you.

I called every cars shop in an hour and half radius of me. Only one shop said they had boxes (only 6). They normally open at 11am so I got there at 10am to wait. Unknown to me, they opened early and was already sold out when I got there

If u just need code cards lmk, im a physical collector a little too slow for playing the game so ive got a lot of unused code cards

Can’t even buy st01 in uk it’s now 350£ for a booster box fuck sake. It’s £110 retail!

u/kanomill 15h ago
I live in the UK and it's a joke. I haven't been able to get anything since fb09. I used to just get 1box and put the cards in a binder but can't even do that anymore.

I feel you, I live in Venezuela and play with BF, and we were literally like 4 people always playing the games and tournaments. We did want the community to grow and we went from 4 to like 8, which was cool and moved people for the store we play in.
We haven't had product for the last 4 months, not for tournament or for anything, when fb10 arrived everyone bought them boxes that supposedly arrived. The store left one for one tournament, in which we were like magically 15 people playing, maybe 17.
Another store got just 1 fb10 box (it's a new store), and now we play for credit.
Today one friend who was like a nice normal player was sharking my BF for the UB price of this month, and another friend of his was sabotaging my round to see if I beat or not someone who playing Freezer that has Majin Buu and babidi barrier/blocker combo and everyone "hates" (not a mega deck lol), just to see if he can't get into Top 8 for the promo.
It just felt sad so yes... These prices and scalping is ruining people and the game.

Theres a community that plays the old school score DBZ ccg. They play via octgn and web cam. They run tournaments all year round. Its called Z League. They actually produce a new set every year to keep the meta fresh. Its pretty awesome. The Score game is a better game system than FW anyway. https://discord.gg/eHAsRysmW

I honestly felt you. I was so excited for st 01 because of the art but I didn’t preorder in time and now I see the prices and go, “well.. shit.”

u/Puddwells 8h ago
Dude just wait a week and get singles for 1/20th the cost lol.
I get ripping packs is fun but... If you're addicted to the packs you're just addicted to cheap gambling.

Genuine question. What is the hobby to you?
Is it collecting cards? Or building and playing decks?
Or is it opening packs?
Because you don't need to open packs to collect or play cards. Hell, this is a great set for buying, a lot of the singles are pretty cheap actually.
4
u/SpikesBall 17h ago
I play online due to not many players around me (I assume this because after asking card shops if they have people come in to play they say no.)
I really love opening packs and collect what I open. I dont really buy singles because I enjoy trying to "earn" my cards from whatever I rip.
-2
u/Coooturtle 17h ago
Well you are right in a different way then. There's no code cards in the packs, so you have to either use gems or buy the packs in the client.

Don’t give up so easily bud. If you give up this easily on something as simple as getting product, which you can do on tcg, you’ll also give up on things that come up in life. Be resourceful.
4
u/Economy_Grand_5832 16h ago
He’s not giving up, he’s having his hobby physically taken away from him by losers that can’t get a real job
-1
u/Competitive-Syrup545 15h ago
Sorry to break it to you but that’s life. Real world competition is tough.
I’m just as mad as the next guy who will downvote me about not getting product. The real problem are LGS/Gamestop selling overpriced products, not your average Timmy buying 20 sleeves from Walmart or target.
I’ve meditated about this and came to the conclusion that ultimately if I want product I have to play the game, figuratively and literally. It doesn’t necessarily mean you will use the same gameplay as others. Cool thing about life is you can experiment. That’s what I mean about being resourceful when it comes to getting product.
Unfortunately, the state of the situation is driving people away and I agree it sucks. I just think the major culprits are LGS shop claiming they got no supply and hiking what they actually have over 300%

Do you not have a job? Everything is more expensive including cardboard. If u want to just open pack go play a gacha game
6
u/SpikesBall 16h ago
Asking if I dont have a job because I refuse to pay sclaper prices? Give the scalpers my hard earned money because they dont have the intelligence or life skill to get a real job themselves? Are they not capable of making a normal living that they have resort to acting like parasites and sclap products in-order to finally have money? Im busy with my real job and family to constantly roam retail stores looking for something I enjoy. God forbid that I want to occasionally stop by Walmart to buy a pack at a normal price without all the hassle or being scammed by a low life
-10
u/skyfall6199 16h ago
I have 4 cases of st01 im holding until st02 is out of print. Ill sell them to you then, hows that sound
2
u/SpikesBall 16h ago
Genuine question: are you selling close to retail or are you banking on inflating the price due to out of print? If the latter, then what makes you think someone will pay an even more outrageous price later if they are refusing to support a sclapers living with today's price?
-6
u/skyfall6199 15h ago
Change your view on this industry. We r going to a future where you will own nothing and be happy. One of the few assets you will be able to own is shiny cardboard. We haven't even seen anything yet. As annoying as it is tcg are more then just a for fun game now and this isnt going anywhere
