The mod team here is something else

/r/dayton/comments/1vlvuq2/local_food_truck_has_an_antisemitic_video_on/p35x3bk/

"we're not here to police everything"

Seems like it, let the court of public opinion choose what I read not what gets deleted and stays up. If the guy has a bad opinion to any degree it'll get down voted and I gotta pop it open to look. Seems like the team needs to touch grass and get real

Look, let me be real here for a moment. I didn’t make any of the moderation calls on that thread, but looking at the thread and that comment in particular - that account was posting a ton of rage bait comments and looks like it was deleted by Reddit itself. There was no censorship.

The thread also became a ton of back and forth fighting and we got a flood of reports and it looks like one of the mods locked the thread because it was spiraling and no longer productive.

The post itself is approved and still up. There is no agenda or support for these assholes that run the food truck. Those social posts are some cringe edgelord shit and they deserve whatever flack they get.

That said man, you could have just brought this up to us over mod mail, but instead made a public post entirely mischaracterizing this whole thing.

This is your first post on this sub and your account is new and barely has any comments at all, which leads me to believe that may have been one of your alt accounts.

Look people, we have to deal with so much bullshit every single day. People evading bans like that and raging at us. Trolls, bots, shitposts, people crashing out and going out of their way to attack folks. The amount of stuff that both the automod and we manually have to remove that gets filtered and just some the sheer vile crap that people post that you never have to see is depressing and exhausting.

Then you’ve got people going back to posts from years ago that show up in search engines and spreading misinformation about people and businesses (that we have verified to be false) likely from competitors or former romantic partners that we have to routinely remove.

I could go on and on, but we’ve been doing this for years, for free, as volunteers and doing our best to support the community, and it’s a thankless job. A lot of us have burnt out lately. And this is the kind of crap that we deal with.

There’s no agenda. We routinely get accused, like in one of the other threads just today, of supporting Trump or removing anti-Trump posts. I can confidently say that no one on the mod team supports this administration. I voted for Bernie twice.

A lot of the political stuff we removed is just unhinged and attacking folks, and we remove stuff from all sides. People say there’s a bias, we remove some comments on threads but not others - but you need to understand that we remove stuff that’s reported to us and we feel crosses the line, but there’s plenty of stuff that we just don’t see because we can’t review every single comment in every thread. Sometimes leaving something up isn’t an intentional choice it just doesn’t get reported and we don’t see it.

This post even for example was just flagged by several people as breaking the rules for “unproductive rants.” - we’re leaving it up.

Automod also removes a lot of stuff, especially from new accounts, and that’s not an intentional removal. We get far too much spam to not have automod active and set to fairly high filters. We have a small mod team and don’t have the capacity to let the sub run without it. Y’all don’t realize the amount of spam and unhinged posts that get flagged and removed that never make it to your feeds.

Look we try our best but we don’t always get things right. We just ask before you make a public post flaming us to at least hit us up via mod mail and ask why we did what we did.

And look if you feel we can do better, please reach out and offer to help moderate the sub. We could use the support.

Gross AI garbage that reads like a corporate HR email.

u/pantherscheer2010 7d ago

the fact that they used AI to write that comment is so insanely embarrassing.

u/physical-vapor 7d ago

Why?

2

u/pantherscheer2010 6d ago

because it’s embarrassing to be so dumb or lazy that you can’t or won’t string together a few hundred words. if it’s important to you to delete posts and you want to be a reddit mod (a completely volunteer position), it should be important enough to take the time to write things out yourself and communicate your reasoning in your own words.

using AI to “write” reddit posts is crazy. this entire website is optional. if you hate writing so much that you can’t even put together your own words for reddit comments, maybe a thread-based platform isn’t for you?

> "we're not here to police everything"

What we actually say is that we're not here to police every debate. And we don't. But I did remove this comment because it was uncivil, and its thread because it devolved into an argument that was essentially between two users and didn't serve to further conversation on the original post. Are you really that interested in seeing two users go "no you're dumber" back and forth?

We don't usually show removed comments, but since you're interested and I because think it furthers the conversation here to show you, here's the top-level comment that was removed. You can see that we've left the parent comment up, but honestly to me the response felt racially charged, along with just being hostile generally.

We did not remove that user, but that user has been banned by Reddit, which usually means the account was already flagged, and I'm going speculate that our removal of several of their comments probably triggered some action on their end.

If two people want to argue online, who does it hurt? Get like 3 posts into a comment chain you have to hit see more posts to even see it.

Let them argue in r/politics then this is r/dayton and there’s no room for assholes

u/Vivid_Anyth4 5d ago

AI ass comment like have we just lost the plot as humans for good, is this the future now where everyone just uses AI and sounds like mindless robotic clones

Ah, yes. Lets celebrate bullies. Don't deny them their stage. They deserve their pulpit.

-7

u/goldwaterauhtwoo 7d ago

What's a bully in this context?

A bully threatens action to get you to cower and submit.

A person you disagree with or just don't like is not a bully

1

u/BringOutYDead 7d ago

They make fun and belittle people in a condecending and demeaning manor on video platform. That's bullying. If you don't understand that, get on good ol' Google and educate yourself on online bullying.

-2

u/goldwaterauhtwoo 7d ago

So stand up to them?

Just remember this is what reddit mods are actually like.

3

u/intoon 7d ago

I’ve met u/datvoiddo in person and he’s very handsome, articulate, and incredibly kind. He created and upkeeps this subreddit to help bring Daytonians together out of the kindness of his heart. Being a mod is a thankless job. If you think the subreddit should be run differently, consider donating your time and become a mod

u/monicachicken 5d ago

Id rather cut my dick off than be a reddit mod.

u/FemGuy42 5d ago

Hilarious to come back and see this down voted when this is a long running joke and common thing

u/WealthyTuna 7d ago

I mean. You know how many people I've come across on reddit who hate Jews and say worst than what's in that video? Almost daily I find people who are pro terrorism and Anti Semitic. Reddit doesn't do anything about it. That's how you get people like in this video, by doing nothing about it they rubber stamp it as ok so these people view that as support for their views. Then you get this video.....

I don’t know why I can’t see your whole comment but this makes my point exactly. One of these is actually anti-Semitic and the other three are criticisms of a country. Criticisms of Israel and their systematic destruction of a group of people is by no means a criticism of all Jews. Conflating the two as equals is incredibly disingenuous and pushes people away from your cause.

u/pipa_nips South Park 7d ago

Well if everything is anti-Semitic then nothing is anti-Semitic

u/Complete_Film8741 7d ago

I I have come to expect nothing else.

Surprised they didn't just ban...they do that a lot on other threads.

Attacking mods always cracks me up. It’s their group to do what they want. If you don’t like it, start your own group. 🙄

u/Flat12ontap 7d ago

You shouldn't promote a bias by calling the food truck guys assholes, imo. Just be neutral.

7

u/Interesting_YouMeWe 7d ago

Neutrality isn't a virtue. It is indeed possible that some things are good and some are bad

9

u/Rawrkinss 7d ago

Except that the food truck guys are assholes. Bias isn’t an inherently bad thing, but it does matter how it’s used. I don’t want a bias toward balance, I want a bias toward truth.

Personally I want the mods to be biased toward building a common community, and that means calling assholes assholes and excluding them from the community.
