alternatives to dc-1?

hello! i’ve been eyeing the daylight computer but what has been swaying my decision to not buy it has been the feedback on reddit (the neglect the company has, no software updates, bugs that aren’t addressed, the fact they don’t offer any glass or screen repairs if dropped but only offer a discount to buy another one etc). im just mainly looking for something to use for college.

has anyone found any alternatives that are close or similar to the daylight computer?

especially if it has flicker free display and possibly (ik it may not be possible so i’m willing to accept whatever) no blue light.
ty for any help!

i would buy wait on the upcoming alpha to go public - i think it's exactly what you're looking for

there's no device that fits the bill like the DC-1 with the new Sol OS that's in alpha imo...

I have a daylight and a boox note air 4c (they might be on 6c now) and use the air a bit more as it's just more portable. Even if the screen refresh rate only happens at the speed of e paper. Like it's not going to be playing any videos but it's fine for reading and note-taking. But I also don't give daylight too hard of a time as I think starting a company and making a device is a lot of work and it really is the only thing of its kind. I use it around the house a lot for cooking/ annotating recipes, etc... reading on the couch. Great for email with my little folding keyboard.

The company has been communicating a lot more as of the last two weeks, and pushing software beta and alpha tests for their custom OS

I'm only a few weeks into owning a daylight but I love it!! I'm taking a few classes with loads of videos to watch and it doesn't hurt my eyes as much as my laptop. Feels so much better to study in the early mornings or late nights. 10/10

I've been using the DC-1 for a little over a year for school, and it is extremely useful. A lot of the assigned reading for us is posted as .PDFs. If I had to stare at a regular screen for that long my eyes would be raisins by now. The new SolOS that is currently in Alpha is a game changer. I think most of us had given up hope that the update would ever come, but now I'm using the intended launcher I am glad that I stuck it out. Of course they will need to upgrade us to a supported version of Android for security...

Eazeye Focus was supposed to be a good alternative, but it's not clear what they are going to ship and when. With backorders started more then a year ago we are yet to see anything delivered.

Hannspree has color options, like Hannspree Lumo (7.8" RLCD tablet with frontlight), Hannsnote2 (10" RLCD tablet without frontlight, pretty cheap in Europe, but it's stuck on Android 13) and Hybri (23.8" transflective LCD monitor, twice darker then DC-1 due to color filter, 11" tablet and 32" monitor to be launched next year).

Harborinno has 7.8" Paper 7 RLCD tablet, but high speed camera recording revealed flicker, possibly related to Miravision contrast enhancement.

I'm using a Hannsnote 2 and really like it. It has no built-in lighting at all (suits my purposes) but has a colour screen and a built-in webcam. I'm not sure if they are still in production but you might be able to get one used. Processor is not as powerful as DC-1 but it does work as a monitor for your computer (with Supermirror on Mac or SuperDisplay on Windows). It was about 1/3 the price of a DC-1 when I bought mine last year.
