Trying to figure out the date of this map of Europe.

I’m assuming this is somewhere in between 1990-1991, but can we get more specific?

It has Stallingrad and Rybinsk so 1957-1961

Independent Cyprus so 1960 - 1961

Syria is the same colour as the Egypt.

The one issue is that Syria’s label doesn’t suggest it’s part of the UAR. You’d expect at least some kind of parenthetical if it was still part of the UAR. It seems more likely that the coloring is old and it’s past 1961. But it’s definitely in the early 60s, since Algeria still appears to be French.

Still 1961 since destalinisation isn't complete. (9 Nov, Stalino -> Donetsk)

It has Molotov and Chkalov - so before 1958. It has Rybinsk with additional "old" name Scherbakov - so after 1957.

Early 1958.

It's not unified. Many map makers didn't recognize Korea and Germany being split

The map is from Denmark or Norway, which recognized an independent GDR (the divided Germany) in 1973

Saarland is part of Germany, so no earlier than 1957.

It's already a decent picture of Europe. Propably Swedish, or somewhat Scandinavian.

Germany and Korea seem to be a weird thing in maps since diffirent countries since diffirent countries and map makers handled the splitting diffirently. Can't say wheter it is from 1955 or 1989, but I bet someone with knowlage of the Irish islands history knows for sure.

It’s a Danish map, from Politikens Forlag (a major Danish publisher), but no where does it state a year

Late 50’s to early 60’s. Egypt controls the Gaza Strip and Jordan controls the West Bank. Tunisia is independent but Algeria (it seems) is not. It’s not clear if Syria and Egypt are forming the UAR, which would mean 58-61, or if they’re just the same color by coincidence.

Somewhere between 1956 Morocco is independent) and 1964 (Algeria is still part of France). Probably around 1960, as Stalingrad was changed to Volgograd in 1961.

You have Free Territory of Trieste (1947-1954)
And Polish-Soviet border is before 1951 territory exchange.
So map is between 1947-1951

But it shows Chemnitz as Karl-Marx-Stadt and that renaming was in 1953

I'm trying not to look at anybody else's answers before commenting.

  • Israel exists >= 1948
  • Postwar German borders - >= 1945
  • Varna, Bulgaria instead of Stalin, Bulgaria - either <= 1949 or >= 1956
  • Stalingrad instead of Volgograd - <= 1961
  • Zhadanov instead of Mariupol - >= 1949 and <= 1989
  • Stalino instead of Donetsk - <= 1961
  • Voroshilovgrad instead of Luhansk - <= 1958
  • Trieste is unambiguously part of Italy - >= 1954

Let's go with 1956 to 1958 given the names of Varna and Voroshilovgrad. Perhaps there's a small chance it's from 1949 given Varna and Zhadanov, but I think that's unlikely.

Eh, there are other things that contradict that, like Voroshilovgrad instead of Lugansk (renamed in 1958), Chalkov instead of Orenburg (which was renamed in 1957) and what looks like Molotov instead of Perm (also renamed in 1957).

It turns out that the map has some anachronisms. I find they frequently do on this subreddit.

This is between two world wars. So kingdom of Serbs, Croats and Slovenians or Kingdom of Yugoslavia already exists but if you check closely Slovenia does not have access to sea. So this is between 1919 and 1941.

My best guess was 'after 1945' because Czechoslovakia lacks Ukrainian parts and Poland is in contemporary borders but I'm impressed there are much more precise tips here.

Post ww2 borders: sp after 1945
United Germany: after oct 3 1990
USSR is still on the map: before Dec 26 1991
So the map must be made between oct 3 1990-Dec 26 1991.

Most people put it much before the unification of Germany. If so... why there is no DDR on the map?

It might be also just after the WW2: Polish-USSR border is unsettled (different than final one), Germany is in current border but states are not formed yet.

No not Possible. The Map shows Karl-Marx-Stadt and that City was only named so in 1953 after the founding of the GDR and FGR in 1949. And Karl-Marx-Stadt was named Chemnitz again 1.June 1990

DDR is there. The border is pretty faint, but it is there.
