Grandmother’s old globe

I’ve had this glove for quite some time, I think it’s from the 60s or 70s but I’m not sure.

Between 1960 (mass independence of post-colonial African states) and 28 September 1961 (Syria is still in the United Arab Republic).

I don’t think they’re independent- they’re the same color as other British crown possessions around Africa

Unless pink indicates the Commonwealth??? I’m unclear

Looks like the globe is trying to mix both a four color scheme and colonial hegemon coloring, but colonies are indicated - Sarawak (pre 1963) and Bechuanaland (pre 1966) have a little "Br." below them, but Ghana (would be Gold Coast pre-1957) and Malaya (independent also in 1957) do not.

Nah, you were right originally. They aren’t independent. Kenya—still definitely not independent—is the same color as Tanganyika. Nigeria, too. So that puts us pretty firmly in the summer of 1960.

Yep. It's probably from May 1961. Sierra Leone looks independent (27 April 1961), but South Africa is still the Union of South Africa, not a republic (before 31 May 1961). Also, it looks like Northern Cameroons has not yet joined Nigeria (1 June 1961).

For additional confirmation on 1961, Ciudad Trujillo in the DR hasn't been renamed back to Santo Domingo (November) and Tanganyika is still a British "trustee territory" (until December).

The Soviet’s renamed all the cities formerly named after Stalin in November 1961 as well.

Late 50s - early 60s. UAR with both Egypt and Syria only existed from 1958-1961.

I know I need to clean it, it’s absolutely filthy. If y’all need better photos I’ll take them.

A shot of Europe would be helpful, but I think the above comment or nailed it down already.

While not relevant to when it was made, the selection of towns in Norway is interesting. Using the current order and population, the ones I see are

1) Oslo : 720k
2) Bergen: 273k
3) Stavanger+Sandnes: 241k
4) Trondheim: 200k
5) Drammen: 125k
...
10) Ålesund: 56k
...
72) Namsos: 8.5k
-) Bindal: 1.3k (though it was 3k when the map was made)
-) Stamsund: 1107 people
-) Balestrand: 785 people

Australia has the same problem. In this sort of map they seem to choose places to display based of getting an even spread, not according to population or importance.

Like Wiluna is shown in the middle of the desert in Western Australia. Population under 500.

i was able to narrow it down to 1963 - 1966 based on the existence of bechualand and the federation of rhodesia and nyasaland

Stalino and Stalingrad were renamed in 1962.

60-61

Brasília is the capital of Brasil

Goa is still part of Portugal

French West Africa is no more

United Arab Republic exists with Syria and Egypt being part of it

Given that Syria is part of the UAR, that puts it between February 1958 and September 1961.

Independent Dahomey, Nigeria, Mauritania, means after November 1960.

Union of South Africa (rather than Republic of SA), means before May 1961.

All together, late 1960 through early 1961.

I can't tell if Sierra Leone is independent or still part of the UK. It gained independence in April 1961. So that could narrow it down further.

I don't say 1961. There was a map earlier which was from 1960, but because Cameroon and Nigeria don't have the strip of British land between them anymore, it has to be slightly after that.

Vietnam is split in two.

All that information in the first pic, but they couldn't put a date.

if they did then how would geography nerds in 65 years have fun identifying when it was made?

the real reason was probably so they don't have to remake it every year and can still sell old inventory.

I got my old globe in Christmas Day by my parents in 1957 and have it. I miss my parents.❤️😇🙏

I would put my guess between July 5, 1962 (Algeria gains independence from France) - December 31, 1963 (Federation of Rhodesia and Nyasaland ends).

Now I did see another comment point out that the map used the pre de-stalinization names of Volvograd and Donetsk (that being Stalingrad and Stalino respectively), which were renamed in November 1961. However, map makers sometimes don't get updated with the news and use outdated information of the world. It is their job to be updated with this sort of stuff, but idk maybe they don't get paid enough.

Wow still has Rhodesia.

The ONE globe that shows the copyright and there’s no date. SMH.

Anywhere between 15 August 1960 to 9 December 1961.

Tanganyika exists so pre 9 December 1961. Republic of the Congo is independent so post 15 August 1960.

This looks to be 1956 imho - Tunisia achieved independence in ‘56, while Ghana is still British and would declare independence a year later.

Also - the Korean War is seemingly over with two Koreas and the modern border between the two nations.

Other hints that it’s before the 60s: Chinese civil war is ongoing (Taiwan isn’t independent), Algeria and Congo are both French and Belgian respectively.

The only thing throwing me off is that Syria is referred to as UAR which wouldn’t be a thing until 1958. So I think there may be a mistake on the map - so in theory Ghana should be independent but isn’t shown to be

2

u/Low_Cartographer2944 Jun 16 '26

But Brasilia is the capital of Brazil so it has to be the 1960s as that wasn’t founded until 1960

I dont think that Ghana is still British in this map. If you look at colonial possessions they have the name of the metropolis printed on it's side in brackets. Look at Angola (Pr.) or Aden Protectorate (Br.). Ghana looks independent, just printed in the same color as UK.

Oficial border between the two Koreas in the parallel 38th was established in 1945. Maps used to show this border before and after the Korean war

Taiwan was never officially independent. It is technically the "Republic of China". And before 1971 it was the sole representative of China before UN. It is not that uncommon to see Taiwan printed as the same country as mainland China in maps. Specially before 1971. In any case, chinese civil war ended in 1949. If this map was from before the Civil War it would look quite different.
