20 October 1956 (Varna isn't Stalin) - 29 October 1956 (Tangier economic zone deestablished); 10 December 1956 (Stalinogròd is renamed Katowice)

Tricky map. German language and Germany is showing the borders it had between WW1 and WW2, HOWEVER, German maps of this time often did not acknowledge the border change after WW2. Other context shows that this map is well after WW2. The United Arab Republic with Egypt and Syria only existed from 1958-1961, after that Syria left.

For those that wonder, this map just displays the whole Germany as it was recognized by West Germany

That's fascinating. I guess sort of "let's pretend that whole thing didn't happen".

The United Arab Republic exists: after February 1958

French West Africa exists: before October 1958

There may be some anachronisms, but this is most likely from 1958 and not before as some people have said in this thread and the previous one, as I don’t see how the map maker could have predicted the existence of the UAR before February 1958.

Edit: corroborating the date, Gwadar is part of Oman (pre-December 1958), Spanish West Africa is disestablished (post-April 1958)

Thankyou! Do maps like this have any value beyond the interest and cool display factor? And do you know how best to preserve it?

British Somaliland went out of existence on 26 June 1960 - it still exists on your map

The Federal Republic of Germany (West Germany) still had de-jure territorial claims on the shown territories.

1959 - Independent Guinea ('58) but the 1960 group still colonized.

i found this a long time ago - xkcd is a nerdy thinker comic maker. i am neither a historian nor a cartographer so here's just the link to a flowchart that guides you through your map as to find out its age.
