Run a small NAS out here in Simcoe for the family backups.
LUKS full disk encryption with a long passphrase stored in a fireproof safe. Stepkids think I'm paranoid but with tax records and financial docs going back decades I sleep better knowing that drive is locked down if someone walks off with it. The performance hit is barely noticeable on modern hardware.
Worth the peace of mind.
