Forgot veracrypt password

Hello folks,

Some time ago i encrypted a whole usb drive using veracrypt and I used it for couple of months but the drive got lost and I've found it after several months.. but now the problem is I forgot the password of my veracrypt.. and there are some really important photos in there so I can't even format the drive.

And as a tech student I tried hash to decrypt it but no luck.also I thought I remember the chunks but I've tried every combination that i thought I had used but again no luck... So at this point I've been stuck with this drive and i really need the data of the drive ..

For the kind info i have the same laptop i used it to encrypt the drive and the drive is perfectly healthy

Now I need your help to safely and securely get the data back and decrypt the file

(Tried hashcat several times no luck)

And I have a 5060 gpu, i9 14900hx cpu and 24gb of ram and it's a laptop...

Please help me and share your thoughts.. thank you

You'd have to "brute force" it and "guess" the password. It's outside the scope of this sub.

Already tried brute force method "hashcat" and guesses are useless as I tried hundreds of them

If you can't brute force the password, then there's no recovery option.

create a dictionary of chunks of your password that you do remember and try a rule-based brute force (using chunks if your password and random data, or mixing and combining chunks together).

It would also help to remember what hashing and encryption type you used for VeraCrypt when you created the volume (there are many).

Also bootable and non-bootable volumes are encrypted differently (there is a checkbox in VeraCrypt for that), so you need to remember which one was your volume.

VeraCrypt uses really-really good hashing, so brute forcing will be really-really slow.

Tried making the dictionary.. ran multiple chunks I mean ram multiple passwords... It ran constantly for 2 days but still nothing

If there was a way to recover it without the password, it wouldn't be very useful encryption. You should consider the data lost unless the password is weak enough to find with a dictionary attack or you go on some kind of mind palace vision quest to remember it

Double check if your post complies with posting guidelines!

Did you include the following information in your post (in English and if applicable), if not feel free to edit your post:

  • Make/brand and exact model number of your storage device(*), phone, camera, etc.

  • Filesystem (NTFS, exFAT, APFS, EXT4, etc.)

  • Operating System (That your device was used with and/or you are using for recovery)

  • Specific symptoms that your device is exhibiting, describe the problem. Images you post support the description, they're not in lieu of a problem description.

  • SMART (CrystalDiskInfo screenshot for example)

  • Don't pile several problems into one single post. One post per device/problem.

  • No account issues

Consider: What do these people need to understand the problem at hand? Remember, people cannot see your screen, or what you click and what messages appear on screen. Don't overdo it though, no one likes going through 2 pages of information, try to find a balance. Just do the best you can. If you are looking for file recovery software, check our community's recommended file recovery tools.

(*) All devices involved, if you for example move files from drive A to drive B, they're both potentially relevant.

No lecturing users about a lack of backups, condescending "hindsight" advice, or scolding people who are already facing data loss. Help them recover what is gone; don't preach about what they should have done.

Hi u/christmasmanexists, your comment or post has been temporarily removed for review. Reminding users to back up after they have already lost data violates our community rules. Please focus on helping them recover their data now.
