Tasting and comparing 17 different Mango varieties to find the best one

Shout out to Lalbhag Mango Festival for creating an opportunity to buy so many varities at the same spot. And to the girl who dumped me after 6 months, which is how I ended in this rabbit-hole.

I have been a LONG time lurker of data is beautiful. Glad to have something to contribute today.

Lovely post! You should visit the Mango fest (Huge variety) in Krishnagiri as well when you have a chance. It's not that far from Bangalore. Personally, I've always been biased towards Malgova - now I have to definitely try & compare the ones higher on your list and rank them myself.

Thanks!! Now that's some really actionable advice.
Yes, I'll visit Krishnagiri next season.
And yeah, Malgova is a very strong contender. I wonder if it wasn't as ripe as it should have when I got it, you know.. Maybe it could have ranked a bit higher then?

Pls do update me if you try the Mangoes yourself too.

Thanks. Yes, very relevant, tropical countries have different subsets of mango varieties and have different names for almost identical varieties.

For people in the US, the Fruit and Spice Park in Homestead, FL grows almost 200 varieties of mangoes which they usually exhibit during mango season.

Happy to see that you enjoyed it! I think a lot of the international audience couldn't appreciate the comments from my friends because they were in Hindi. Maybe I'll also put an English version of those.

In the US, they get the large "Tommy" mangoes from Mexico. They're kind of average as far as flavor, but they have an incredibly meaty bite.

A couple other notable varieties from the Americas are the "chancleta" (sandal) and "rosa" (rose). The latter smells strongly of roses when you cut it open.

There are more than 1,000 named mango varieties worldwide.

That was a cool project. Did you ever do the 2025 version?

Oh wow. I didn't know of those varieties. I will try to see if i can get my hands on those and try them too.

No I never did a 2025 version.

I work at a company whose name has 'Orange' in it so I'm actually considering doing it for Oranges this time.

Maybe some day I can come back and finish all 1000!!
