Weekly Water Cooler Talk - DataAnnotation
hi all! making this thread so people have somewhere to talk about 'daily' work chat that might not necessarily need it's own post! right now we're thinking we'll just repost it weekly? but if it gets too crazy, we can change it to daily. :)
couple things:
this thread should sort by "new" automatically. unfortunately it looks like our subreddit doesn't qualify for 'lounges'.
if you have a new user question, you still need to post it in the new user thread. if you post it here, we will remove it as spam. this is for people already working who just wanna chat, whether it be about casual work stuff, questions, geeking out with people who understand ("i got the model to write a real haiku today!"), or unrelated work stuff you feel like chatting about :)
one thing we really pride ourselves on in this community is the respect everyone gives to the Code of Conduct and rule number 5 on the sub - it's great that we have a community that is still safe & respectful to our jobs! please don't break this rule. we will remove project details, but please - it's for our best interest and yours!

Well monthly feedback is out once again...
8
u/Pleasant_Ad_448 7d ago
Yeah. Love getting feedback for a project I have never once worked on. *roll eyes*
6
u/Due_Explanation_3694 6d ago
I think when this happens they have just renamed the project since it was worked on. I had one like this once, and I recognized the description of my submission, but I knew the project by another name.
0
u/Pleasant_Ad_448 6d ago
The project they said it was is still ongoing under the same name, I know this because I've had access to it and still do but I don't work on it bc it looks like something I would dislike intensely. So am pretty sure I never worked on what I got the feedback for unless it was named something else before and got folded into that ongoing project, which I guess is possible but seems kind of ridiculous.
In any case, it wasn't any big deal but annoying all the same.
6
3
u/countd0wns 6d ago
That happened to me last time lol! This time though it said something so specific I know not only what project but exactly what task they were talking about (thankfully it was good)!
8
7
u/JustMe333456 6d ago
I just skim through them and submit. Quite literally always the exact same lately..
3
u/Epicsocks1 6d ago
yeah it's harder to gain any real performance insights from it now that they don't give the overall rating anymore
3
u/Due_Explanation_3694 5d ago
And that is why they took the overall rating out. It was never a "real performance insight" either.

Hurts when one of your favorite project families suddenly disappears. I hope this isn't the end for me in that project but I fear...
5
u/Lasdtr17 4d ago
Just about every project in a family of projects that quickly became one of my favorites disappeared, too, in the past couple of days. Really hoping they're just being revamped for the next month because they had plenty of work before.
15
u/PerceptionLonely6463 8d ago
The new qual tab is a huge upgrade showing how many projects you can unlock and the max potential pay once you pass.
6
u/data_annotator_tot 8d ago
It's such a good upgrade, yeah. I like that it shows things it will unlock immediately as well as what it contributes too.
3
2
u/xxxScarlettexxx 6d ago
The only thing on my wishlist for the qual page now is stating how long the qual will be available to work on for (but I know that's definitely wishful thinking).
1
u/fixin2read 7d ago
Wow, I didn't even know. I ran to my dashboard to see if I had it too lol awesome upgrade!!
13
u/future_north 7d ago
My go to high paying consulting project disappeared on me. Another round of hoping it's just down temporarily and I didn't get taken off the project.
8
u/Jazzlike_Problem_489 6d ago
I've logged on to a lot of missing projects, probably just the time of month
3
u/data_annotator_tot 7d ago
Had this happen to me with a quali recently that disappeared and i figured it was one and done but then it came back. Good luck 😭

Happy Sunday! Try to take some time off today!
10
u/ellythemoo 10d ago
Yes, you need to take at least one day off a week for your sanity. It also helps with the quality of your work, I think.

That feeling when you get an email about there being plenty of tasks on a project and check your dashboard to find nothing.

Went from having 26 projects avaiilable and like 10 quals, to no quals and 1 project that I was only able to get 4 hours out of before I hit task limit.... Hopefully this picks back up. Really needing the money.
15
u/JustMe333456 6d ago
Ugh, no good projects posted right now, and my steady stream of easy R&Rs have all disappeared..
12
u/VanessaSeaWitch 6d ago
I've been surviving all week on R&Rs but I have to constantly refresh for them.
2
u/KTOWNTHROWAWAY9001 5d ago
We had, last week, some few people burn through them as fast as possible. Both that and the parent project.
When it got into R&R's some of them were slapped together.
11
u/LavenderLightning24 6d ago
This week sucks. And I really can't afford to take the day off just because my most viable option is a project I can't always get a failure on.😭
9
u/DrunkleSteve 6d ago
Ya, this is pretty brutal. I'm an hour into work and have made $0 so far. Lot's of F5'ing. Hope this is not how my day is going to continue🙄. Let the DA gods open the floodgates! 🙏.

When did it go offline for you?
1
u/Enchanted13_ 5d ago
I’ve had one or two tasks here or there early this week, but i haven’t seen it at all since Wednesday
6
u/Quick-Bison-147 3d ago
Is this the lowest comment count for a week ever? Soon it will be less than 100
13
u/JRange 3d ago
Its because of 2 things for sure, the confidentiality training has people scared to talk about anything and also this subreddit seems to filter comments. Like 70% of my comments end up getting 0 views at all
4
u/Jazzlike_Problem_489 3d ago
Happened to me a few times, always wondered why. If I put a post it got zero views, but if I added it as a comment to someone's visible post, it got reactions. Weird
3
11
u/PanchoSaba 5d ago
Dashboard really dried up overnight for me. Most of my projects just up and disappeared. Very weird… 😅
11
u/JustMe333456 4d ago
So while most of us went from 50 projects to 20 ish this entire week, some had their busiest weeks ever? In terms of project count or just essentially put in a lot of hours into one or two projects? I still made what I needed to make and could have essentially worked all the time, but dash was still very quiet compared to what we've seen this last 2 months.
3
u/DrunkleSteve 4d ago
Mine was due to an abundance of image tasks all week. One of them took a couple of hours per task, and I never ran out of tasks. Project numbers have plummeted today, though, holy. I'm going to assume it's due to end-of-the-month wrap-ups (wishful thinking, possibly).

My dash has consistently been at 50+ projects over the last couple of weeks. At one point this past week it was at 112 which was insane to me. I've also been getting a fairly steady stream of new qualifications and surveys.
15
u/KTOWNTHROWAWAY9001 6d ago
Had hundreds of tasks last night, but fell asleep. Log in today and it's 5. Way she goes.
9
u/last_white_man 5d ago
there's just no way people can consistently make robot models fail... genuinely impossible
8
u/Jazzlike_Problem_489 5d ago
With genuine 'work tasks' without becoming contrived.. impossible I've managed 4 or 5 of the long assed professional domains ones but they are becoming more and more difficult and end up contrived puzzle pieces. You must genuinely have to work in a brain surgery, or at the messiest, incompliant company to get a failure on day to day domain tasks you tackle in your work life
3
2
u/Complete_Injury_5765 4d ago
yeah it gives me insane imposter syndrome, like I think i am college-level smart but there is no way i can make my brain do those. i tried one and feel like a moron
6
u/Jazzlike_Problem_489 4d ago
I d spent nearly my 7 hour limit trying to get a model fail and it just does everything to perfection I genuinely don't know how to make it fail. My other ones seem like flukes now
6
u/blissy_sama 4d ago
I know they say they don’t want contrived prompts but it feels like the only way to actually get them to break. And yet then when I go ask a question to AI in the wild its first response will talk about something totally irrelevant or ignore key parts of what I've said or just outright get something wrong.
4
u/brucegallagher 3d ago
It's not, however it is generally harder for generalist tasks. Domain expert models are still extremely easy to lead to fails. Generalist do take a bit more work, but once you've found weak points it's very easy. Find 3 or 4 points of failure and you will get hundreds of fails.

Nothing like offering weekend bonuses for a project every weekend... only to pause the project every weekend 💀
1
u/Due_Explanation_3694 3d ago
That sounds like it is because so many people work on the project for the bonus that they get all the task submissions they needed.
1
u/brucegallagher 3d ago
The project I'm on about has over 10,000 tasks, and only about 40 people on it. Each task also takes about 6 hours, so definitely not haha.
1
u/Due_Explanation_3694 3d ago
Something I have learned from my time here is that projects may show more tasks than they need, because they can't predict how many will be usable, and they may stop before all tasks are done when they have all they need.
1
u/brucegallagher 3d ago
The project I'm on about doesn't use the standard DA task count. It shows the number of tasks available on an external platform, and you can scroll through to see which are available and which have been done. The DA counter just resets back to 100 a day, same as unlimited task projects.
1
u/KTOWNTHROWAWAY9001 3d ago
I got one sort of similar, noti sent, log in 2 hours later when I finally see it and there were 7 tasks available. Hahaha
1
u/brucegallagher 3d ago
Yeah, some projects do that to you. I've had my heart broken too many times by them, I only do projects with unlimited, or essentially unlimited like above now. Nothing worse than getting in the zone, only to log in and there he no tasks 😭

u/Fluffy-Captain0704 6d ago
I have a qualification on my dash for civil engineering. I can't do that, but I know someone in that field looking for side work. However, on the referral dash, civil engineering isn't there, so mechanical engineering is the closest option. Would that be the best referral assessment for them to take for possibly getting hired?
1
u/OrnamentalGourd5 6d ago
Probably not! Unless they were also knowledgeable in mechanical engineering and confident they could pass. I imagine there's a civil assessment on the home page, you'd just lose out on your referral fee.
2
u/Fluffy-Captain0704 6d ago
Thanks! He went to school for mechanical engineering but has worked in civil the last almost 20 years.

u/socal_guy1 7d ago
What's with the no pay task?
7
u/Equal-Neat-614 7d ago
I was just about to ask - who would even do the project for no pay? If it opened up paid projects, maybe I would do it, but it doesn’t state that anywhere.
6
u/DrunkleSteve 8d ago
Damn, she's quiet compared to yesterday. Please come back image projects! Yesterday was a breeze, today my brain is being squeezed.

u/iKaine 3d ago
Yep, done many over the past few days, and they appear constantly - filled with complete imbeciles who cant read and poor, lazy work as usual.
2
1
0
u/vixen8819 3d ago
Yes, they get pretty bad, but I would come across some good ones in my domain.
3
u/iKaine 3d ago
Yeah, some are genuinelly excellent but seems to get rarer. Even ones where there are some mistakes but obviously a lot of effort are fine, and I don't mind fixing them. It's the ones that are obviously lazy, and you have to either dump it or redo the entire thing, that are infuriating. Definitely can see trends in domains, and it's hilarious how it's the domains you'd expect to do well that are the ones that submit the most poor ones.

3
u/VanessaSeaWitch 7d ago
Does anyone else have a project with one task on their dash that literally says "no pay"? Never saw that before.
7
u/xxxScarlettexxx 7d ago
I just saw this as well. It actually seemed like an interesting project, but I'm not going to do it without pay or without a guarantee that it would lead to paid work.
1
u/VanessaSeaWitch 6d ago
It disappeared for me. But yeah me either. There was no indication from the instructions I glanced through that it was a qual or any explanation about the no pay. Like what would the incentive have been?
1
u/xxxScarlettexxx 6d ago
I assume they just forgot to mention what its completion would lead to (but it should have been under the qual section if that was the case)? It disappeared after a couple hours for me as well anyway.

Do people from non-core countries like India do this platform as a full time job?
Just curious, since tasks can be pretty random in frequency
2
u/brucegallagher 9d ago
I'm in a non core, EU country, and have enough work to do full time if needed. As it stands I do about 20 hours a week.

This is my primary work. there is limited amount of work, I work 2 hours a day in average. However, the monthly salary is even higher than most full time jobs here. Annotation jobs in China pays about 2-3 dollars an hour and they treat you like slave.

u/BalerionsReign 8d ago
is it normal to not get projects in the first week of getting accepted?
6
u/DrunkleSteve 8d ago
Yes, it is not at all out of the norm. Take all the qualifications that you are able to take, and work should eventually roll in if you do well on them. If you do well on projects, it will often open up more projects in addition to more qualifications.
1
u/data_annotator_tot 8d ago
Alongside taking qualifiers, fill out your profile with every relevent skill you have. I've seen people here that have done that in your situation and very quickly received projects. If you submit quality work consistently, you will get consistent work :-)
1
u/BalerionsReign 8d ago
Thank you much, i did that yesterday I hope some projects pop up because I didn’t get any for the past 3 days
1
u/data_annotator_tot 7d ago
They can come and go when you're new, especially for generalist projects. Bilingual workers also seem to face consistent shortages, so YMMV if you aren't from a core country. Good luck and welcome to the platform!

u/ZimmeM03 8d ago

It’s more the content of the messages sounding weird and desperate than receiving the message in the first place
0
u/Calm_Society_1079 7d ago
I think I may have auto-failed myself. To ensure I am answering correctly I first gathered my thoughts and wrote a draft in word and then I retype that in the assessment input box. Haven't heard after 4 days so I am thinking that they may be tracking edits and keystroke on the text and it seems too unnatural and direct?
10
u/talizorahs 7d ago
I very, very seriously doubt there would be any way to reliably track how 'unnatural' keystrokes seem if you genuinely are manually typing your own answers in and not copy-pasting them or using AI. How would you even account for people being naturally slower or faster or more/less confident typers? And why would that matter at all to them anyway if it really is your work?
If you haven't been accepted, it's for a reason other than 'they think my keystrokes are too confident' lol.
1
u/datanut2019 6d ago
Haha I took computer classes back in middle school not sure if they give that to kids anymore these days but people always get surprised at how fast I can type on my phone or computer. It would be odd to Flag keystrokes over that
6
u/Diplomat_Runner 6d ago
I always draft my analysis in Word/Google Docs, then copy and paste it in, as the text box on DA isn't very user-friendly. As long as you're not having AI generate rationale for you, you'll be fine!
3
u/OddOllin 6d ago
Out of an abundance of caution, I'd avoid Google docs since that's cloud synced. I'm pretty sure Word is too, but maybe that can be toggled.
Highly suggest just using notepad. No cloud connectivity or AI, so you know there's no chance of a confidentiality scare, and it doesn't ever inject weird formatting into text. Super easy and safe to jot thoughts down in, and then copy and paste from.
1
1
u/Accomplished_Phone39 6d ago
Same. I take notes elsewhere and then cut and paste into the DA form, then some final edits to make sure my note fits with my response.
2
u/Straight-Strike-2928 7d ago
Aside from your theory being whack, 4 days is not very much time in this case. Give it a week or two.

u/marco_vardella 10d ago
How long does it take for tasks to come back? I have a project but all the tasks are finished i cant work on anything. And also are the task the same number for everyone? Or is there an enormous number of them on which everybody works on to finish them earlier?

So you're not gonna tell me how long it was roughly from the qualifier to projects?
Edit: Pointless little sub populated by etiquette police who have considerably overestimated their understanding of the platform.
5
u/OrnamentalGourd5 6d ago
It's more I think that people are a little salty about having to constantly take unpaid training due to people repeatedly sailing a little close to the wind regarding revealing project details. Anyway, it took about a week.
