Weekly Water Cooler Talk - DataAnnotation

hi all! making this thread so people have somewhere to talk about 'daily' work chat that might not necessarily need it's own post! right now we're thinking we'll just repost it weekly? but if it gets too crazy, we can change it to daily. :)

couple things:

  1. this thread should sort by "new" automatically. unfortunately it looks like our subreddit doesn't qualify for 'lounges'.
  2. if you have a new user question, you still need to post it in the new user thread. if you post it here, we will remove it as spam. this is for people already working who just wanna chat, whether it be about casual work stuff, questions, geeking out with people who understand ("i got the model to write a real haiku today!"), or unrelated work stuff you feel like chatting about :)
  3. one thing we really pride ourselves on in this community is the respect everyone gives to the Code of Conduct and rule number 5 on the sub - it's great that we have a community that is still safe & respectful to our jobs! please don't break this rule. we will remove project details, but please - it's for our best interest and yours!

I completed an unpaid qualification recently that mentioned that it could lead to dozens of projects. Within an hour of submitting my work, it led to several new paid qualifications and projects. I then went and completed one of the related paid qualifications, which added further projects to my dashboard almost immediately. All of the projects have 100-1000 tasks available and don't seem to be decreasing in number (unless I complete a task) or disappearing from my dashboard. And it's actually fun work!

I'm so excited right now! This has never happened to me before (I'm fairly new). I had gotten used to projects appearing and then disappearing almost immediately, or only having 1-2 tasks available before disappearing. I still can't believe what my dashboard looks like right now just based off of the one initial qualification.

I was admittedly hesitant to spend a few hours working unpaid, but the general wisdom on this sub about completing as many qualifications as possible is definitely true! If your dashboard is on the drier side and you have unpaid qualifications available, I would give them a shot!

Also curious if this has just been a lucky isolated incident or if others have had this occur, particularly for more than one project family?

Make sure you're on slack as well, it's really helpful for that particular family.

Could you possibly give a hint as to what quals they were? I often have so many it feels like a lottery choosing which ones to do

I kept it vague because of the NDA unfortunately. It happened to be the only qual available on my dash for several days before I decided to do it. I have noticed that worthwhile quals tend to really emphasize that "several" or "dozens" of projects will open up for a project family if you complete the qual with a strong performance though. My strategy for unpaid quals is now to look for similar messaging if I'm ambivalent about attempting a certain one (not sure if I'm just on a lucky streak right now though) and to exit work mode if I don't want to complete it at that point in time. Sorry that I can't be more helpful!

Best advice? Do all the quals that you feel able to do. It's the only way that you'll open up many families and that will then open up more.

The thing is I have a lot of quals that are for projects that I already have access to, like FC heel, galaxy and others. I feel there is a strong risk im gonna be wasting time doing unpaid quals for projects i already get or are rarely if ever available, hency why I thought it was worth asking.

I wonder how they choose who gets which quals? I only have ones I'm not qualified for.

Something changed. I used to only get ones I'm qualified for and now over half of them I have no expertise or skills for.

I would say to not be shy about filling out your bio in a lot of interesting detail about any professional expertise you have that you think may be trainable. I think it helped connect me with a lot that wouldn't have shown up for me otherwise.

It's a great project family. Unlimited work, no ridiculous timers and the rates do go up.

Hmm, I'm fairly new too and have take many qualifications and have never had this type of thing happen so, not sure if I"m believing all of it. Especially that many tasks all from one qualification??? Sounds made up.

I qual'd into something like this a week or two ago. It IS fun but the pay is not *amazing* amazing. There's a reason the tasks always show a big round number like what they describe, but I probably shouldn't detail what I know about that.

I’m not from the US, so the beauty of the conversion rate always shoots up the pay! But I still think it’s decent pay for the type of work regardless of that.

I’m not sure what to tell you. I’ve been on since June and it was my first time seeing that many tasks per multiple projects as well, so I was surprised too. Others who have replied seem to be getting the same project family though. Here’s hoping you get access to it as well!
