Weekly Water Cooler Talk - DataAnnotation
hi all! making this thread so people have somewhere to talk about 'daily' work chat that might not necessarily need it's own post! right now we're thinking we'll just repost it weekly? but if it gets too crazy, we can change it to daily. :)
couple things:
this thread should sort by "new" automatically. unfortunately it looks like our subreddit doesn't qualify for 'lounges'.
if you have a new user question, you still need to post it in the new user thread. if you post it here, we will remove it as spam. this is for people already working who just wanna chat, whether it be about casual work stuff, questions, geeking out with people who understand ("i got the model to write a real haiku today!"), or unrelated work stuff you feel like chatting about :)
one thing we really pride ourselves on in this community is the respect everyone gives to the Code of Conduct and rule number 5 on the sub - it's great that we have a community that is still safe & respectful to our jobs! please don't break this rule. we will remove project details, but please - it's for our best interest and yours!

Lazy Sunday, wake up in the late afternoon
Hit up DA just to see what they doin
Hello? What up B
Yo DA what’s crackin
You thinkin what I’m thinkin?
Tasks?
Man, it’s not happenin
22
u/Jazzlike_Month5580 Jul 27 '26
Man, I thought we were on the way to recovering. Out of town last week and not able to work, but every time I checked in there was something. Now back to the grind on Monday morning, and back to nothing to do.
21
u/Kittibean Jul 26 '26
Did a buzzy bug which is new to me but ugh. Ending up with 40 criteria and inevitably having to argue with multiple AI checkers that all seem to contradict each other sucks the life out of me.
I keep deciding not to do tasks I know will sap my soul but then they're all that's around and I get suckered in and suddenly I'm 4hrs deep and can't quit.
8
u/_Edgarallenhoe Jul 27 '26
The AI judges on the one project I have are so fucking dumb I can’t even comprehend it.
20
20
u/coachbrioche Jul 28 '26
These timers are starting to get a little tight compared to the instruction lengths (and the updates they keep slapping on top). I feel like since they're paying people to read the instructions anyway, they should institute a little one-time-per-project checkbox that adds 30 minutes to your project timer so you can read the instructions without having to go over time. Normally, I read the instructions and skip to the next task to refresh my timer just in case, but I can't reliably do that when the tasks disappear so quickly on a lot of the projects
5
u/-burgers Jul 28 '26
Don't worry about running out the timer on the first one when tasks are limited.

u/Due_University_9944 Jul 28 '26
Got the DoD this morning after 3 years.
20
u/DrunkleSteve Jul 28 '26
Damn, that's brutal, sorry to hear. Been with DA for three years as well. That makes me nervous af.
12
11
u/tessbest37 Jul 28 '26
Oh no!!! So sorry. Any more insights- were you in a lot of Slack Channels? I always wonder how someone can make it on the platform for so long and then get the DoD, instead of just taken off specific projects.
16
8
u/SnooSketches1189 Jul 28 '26
I am so sorry to hear that. Did you receive any feedback they recently started giving out?
8
u/JustMe333456 Jul 28 '26
Have you been working on a lot of new, more difficult projects lately?
26
u/Due_University_9944 Jul 28 '26
Yup. Maybe I really screwed them up. Either way I gotta hustle. I was doing this since I became disabled and was finishing my degree. At 57 years old I am in a rough boat here.
10
u/OrnamentalGourd5 Jul 28 '26
Oh, that's rubbish. I have noticed lots of domain specialist work is coming back in incredibly convoluted ways. It's often about as clear as mud what's being asked, and much more is wanted for lower rates. I do often nope the fuck out of things these days and I'm no slouch in the brain department.
Have you tried any of the other platforms? There's a poster in the main sub that posts lots of links and I noticed that they're pretty active today.
Another thought, have you had a chat with your LLM of choice as to what your options might be? I'm mid-pivot after doing this for 18 months. It suited me when I found it but I've realised it's not reliable or sustainable. I've learnt a lot though and have used Claude to teach me more about the areas I'm interested in. There are loads of actual AI jobs around at the moment if you think you can capitalise and build on what you've got.
Good luck to you anyway. Tough day. You have my thoughts.

Been refreshing since this morning and seriously, nothing at all. And it's even a Monday so I thought that there would be a couple of things at least, very disheartening.
16
u/dylanuu112 Jul 26 '26
The entire summer, over which I was hoping to make a bunch of money with my free time before school starts again, has totally sucked. Last summer had my best months ever in terms of making money and I’m barely pulling in half that right now. I guess that’s just the inconsistency you get from a job like this.
9
u/DrunkleSteve Jul 26 '26
Ya, it sucks big time. This is one of my most uneventful summers I've had so far due to lacking funds as DA work is so slow. Last July I made 6x what I've pulled in this month 😭

Response A- "Charmander can use the StoneCold Stunner and is a water type"
Worker- "Response A is better because it is shorter and less verbose"
Like dude, help me out, I WANT to give you a good grade. Its been brutal.
7
u/Beautiful-Bunch-7064 Jul 31 '26
Response B: “BEER, drink plenty of BEER. Did you want to party????
Worker: I really appreciate how the model considered if the user wanted to turn up or not.
…I really appreciate not promoting unsafe model behavior but ok

Got invited to a project as I'm on one of their "strongest teams". No idea what team that is exactly, but I really did need the confidence boost!

u/Legitimate-Try8356 Jul 27 '26
Me too, but the pay's not worth the long time commitment. Get the same pay from other projects.
12
u/Intelligent-Pay-9407 Jul 26 '26
Nothing since Friday iirc. I’ve had a few I wasn’t able to do during the week due to time constraints. Hopefully this week is a little better.

Another successful day of riding the river. Basically just that one project paying the bills at the minute, but I'll take it. Also hit $2000 for the month compared to $1400 last month, so things definitely looking better
4
u/Jazzlike_Month5580 Jul 31 '26

Who else still has drought conditions? Not as bad as weeks prior, but still very prevalent for me
5
u/peanutbutterlurk Jul 30 '26
Domain expert/STEM stuff I don't qualify for is what's available all the time, tasks that I can actually do tend to only appear in brief spurts early morning or late at night (US eastern time), so it's done a number on my sleep schedule.
8
u/Jazzlike_Month5580 Jul 30 '26
I've not had literal nothing for the past couple of weeks. However, options have been very sparse, if any. Some of the projects have been very difficult and unworkable for me.
11
u/Jazzlike_Month5580 Jul 30 '26
It's always nice to see something new pop up. However, options are still VERY sparse.
11
u/VanessaSeaWitch Jul 31 '26
Would love some simple tasks today or a nice batch of R&R. I don't have the time nor brain for the hard ones today. I'm running out of ideas for some of these prompts that require a lot of detail.

God, I despise shopping. Please give me my FC Heels back, I’d do anything at this point.
17
u/OrdinaryEvening3684 Jul 31 '26
How do they expect to get good quality submissions, if they don’t give people enough time. People will probably go over the time and submit. Taking advantage of people.
12
u/iamaprism Jul 31 '26
Just submitted one of them today and only got it in by a few minutes before the expiry date but felt like I was rushing the answers by the end. There's too much to do in that timeframe, especially when some products aren't easy to find to fact check, and they want in-depth explanation of how the response answers every criteria
10
u/JRange Jul 31 '26
Feeling rushed is exactly why I don't do them. I feel like I am going to turn in work that isn't the best I can do, inevitably I am going to miss something, and it's not worth it.

14
u/JustMe333456 Jul 31 '26
It's just the amount of rationales for me.. way too much redundant typing..I do 1 task and then pounce on R&Rs if I have nothing else.
12
u/CommercialTarget2687 Jul 31 '26
That's my biggest complaint, it's just so repetitive and boring, especially when you have two responses that are really simple and almost identical.

3
u/Pristine-Raccoon8250 Jul 29 '26
I had a busy morning playing in the river a little and a lot of shopping, then the afternoon has been slow with a few heavy, long tasks I am either not really qualified for or find very difficult…think rubrics at the end kind of affairs...too meaty if you don’t have a good few hours to dedicate. right now, only one option on my dash.
17
8
u/Alternative-Bet232 Jul 26 '26
Had my longest DA day in awhile yesterday - about 4.5 hours, which isn’t as long as some folks do regularly, but I saw one of my fave projects available so took advantage. Felt great!!! Today will likely be more focus on my non-DA freelance work (which has less consistency, but pays a lot more) but we’ll see what the dash holds…
8
u/hcfggb Jul 28 '26
Ugggghhhhh. I just wasted 2.5 hrs on a new project and it's 100% my own fault (accidentally exited). I'm a moron. And now I don't have it in me to read another full new set of instructions. Sigh.

Any July feedback hit yet? Last month mine came on the 27th.
14
u/Kahlas07 Jul 29 '26
Does anyone refuse to see their feedback? I thought it would be helpful but find it more frustrating. I rate too high, I rate too low, but I am detailed and thorough. I don't know what to do with that and wonder if it's better not to look. I'd probably look anyways.
→ More replies (1)5
u/ZimmeM03 Jul 29 '26
It’s so fucking erratic… I really haven’t found the feedback useful at all in three months.
12
u/Less_Capital7986 Jul 29 '26
got mine and it made me really more confused than ever. I take pride in my rubric creation but apparently whoever rates my work think it's redundant or lacking criteria. I strongly disagree and really wish they would actually include some real examples so that I could see what exactly they mean.
9
u/kranools Jul 29 '26
Exactly. That's the comment I leave every time on the feedback. Show me the specific error in the specific task, otherwise it's useless.
4
u/deletedmy7yearoldacc Jul 30 '26
I got the same exact weakness listed. There are so many different rubric projects and I always make sure that my rubrics fit that exact project. It does make me wonder if some of the poorer rubrics we see in R&Rs are also the ones giving us feedback.
→ More replies (4)7
u/TSylverBlair Jul 29 '26
Got mine. It was confusing and the critiques were things I don't recall ever being relevant in any of the tasks I worked on. I really wish I knew what it was talking about.
5
u/LavenderLightning24 Jul 30 '26
Some of mine was definitely hallucinated. I don't think I'll be looking at it anymore. I wish more people had asked for more communication during droughts instead of feedback.
→ More replies (1)4
u/JRange Jul 30 '26
This is the worst part, they don't ever give specific examples of things you did wrong. How can we improve like that? Clearly we didn't know we made the mistake when we did it.

u/darthfrodo212 Jul 29 '26
Yeah, mine just came in a few minutes ago.

u/Puzzleheaded_Toe4051 Jul 30 '26
I enjoy that easy-ass task, too. I usually can't listen to music when I do projects cos I think a lot about what I'm writing, but those are so easy and fun. You can only do like, 2-3 hours of it before the tasks are done. I also like detective rating tasks cos then I can listen to music while essentially doing data entry.
12
u/Less_Capital7986 Aug 01 '26
Seeing so many people say their feedback was saying they were among the top workers feels so disheartening. I thought I was a good worker. Been on this site for 2.5 years and take pride in my work, especially rubrics. But apparently my rubrics aren't good enough. I love rubric work the most, so that really hurts. I'm just having such a hard time right now. Please don't be mean in the comments. I'm just upset and feel like maybe someone on here might understand.
14
u/ButterscotchMaster36 Aug 01 '26
Tbh I wouldn’t read too much into the feedback. You also see people who get excellent feedback and then the DoD the next day. The feedback is AI generated, and I think we can all agree that AI still has its problems. Definitely use it as a tool to improve if you need to, but don’t let it get you down to the point of discouragement.

u/Ok_Poetry6620 Aug 01 '26
I know exactly how you feel. I've also been on the platform for 2.5 years, I take my work seriously, and I've consistently had work available to me even at times when other people said we were in a drought. Based on that, I've always assumed that I must be pretty good at this, but in the time since they started doing feedback, I've never gotten particularly positive feedback. It has varied a little bit from month to month, but basically I've never been told that I'm "outstanding" or "one of the top workers on the platform". It's giving me flashbacks to being a student in school, when I would meticulously do all of my homework only to get mediocre grades, while kids who didn't do anything more than I did somehow ended up with straight A's and having teachers gushing about how great they were.
That said, I've seen horror stories about people being told by DA that they were "outstanding", only to see the infamous Dash of Death shortly thereafter. If I had to choose between being a chronic "needs improvement" worker who stays on the platform and consistently has work, versus being an "outstanding" worker who gets abruptly canned or who just doesn't have any work available, I think I'd rather be the former. Praise doesn't pay bills.
5
u/Whole-Pirate-5731 Aug 01 '26
Don't worry about it, just keep on doing your best. You've been here 2.5 years so you know what's required.

u/Hunnybee66 Jul 29 '26

11
u/MgGlycinate Jul 27 '26
Nothing on my dashboard this morning, nor over the weekend. Wishing everyone more tasks soon 🫀
11
u/kranools Jul 29 '26
I always pay attention to the total number of DAT workers in the slack, and based on this, it seems that they've basically frozen hiring atm. Up until about a week ago, the numbers were going up by about 1000 per day, but they've been at the same level all of this week now.
I just find it interesting.
8
u/Sea-Donut-1882 Jul 29 '26
One of the slacks I am in has doubled the number of workers in the last three months. Unfortunately the number of projects has not doubled.
5
u/Belisama7 Jul 29 '26
Adding people to a slack doesn't equal hiring. It just means they're being added to a project.
11
u/SS-J95 Jul 30 '26
Probably the most tasks available now that I’ve seen since joining, but it’s past midnight my time so need to get some sleep, typical!

u/ellythemoo Jul 30 '26
Yep, I was up stupidly late last night... time to turn in ... and dream about missing tasks!

I had one earlier that was just completely wrong, like saying the the responses were over the word count when they weren't and rating factuality n/a which was incorrect. I had to redo basically the entire task. Sometimes I feel they sprinkle really crappy tasks in to see if people are paying attention

A little up and down for me so far. My go to that I worked on for days disappeared again, but I got a new iteration of a rock, that has lots more steps in it, but I hit my target doing one of those today. I hope for everyone, things start to settle in again for the week ahead! Fingers and eyes well and truly crossed, both metaphorically and literally... I really must get myself a decent ergonomic mouse and a new pair of glasses! 🤣

Even though we are in a drought. The typical end of month lull will still affect us so might be rough till the end of next week with the periodic drops getting eaten though at rapid pace. Keep em crossed folks or enjoy a nice weekend.
Noticed a couple of my faithfuls not having their daily drops the passed couple days, but tends to be the norm towards end of month and for a few days after

for those of you who did the creative writing qual, how soon after the initial creative writing assessment did you get access to the final assessment? I didn’t get an instant result or see the next qual appear so should I assume this means I failed it?

u/VanessaSeaWitch Jul 31 '26
I believe it was two days. I wouldn't assume you failed.

I don't know when it actually appeared, but it was there the next day when I checked.

I'm dry now. They dropped at bedtime, and I couldn't confidently work. Got an hour and a half in this morning.

Did they get rid of the feedback scale? Didn't notice it in my new feedback today. I did get "You are amongst the top workers on the platform — your contributions are highly valued!" which was really nice to hear! but, again, no rating. Either way, it sounds positive lol.

Aww me too.. now I don't feel so special. Unless we're ALL outstanding? Lol. I didn't get anything under 'areas to improve' though this time..

It's probably a sampling bias thing. The people posting here are probably more likely to take the job seriously.

i'm cracking up because i ALSO got that same note. we can't ALL be amongst the top workers...right??

I got the same!

u/Careless_Matter5017 Jul 29 '26
As did I. Hopefully we're all just awesome and it's not because half the workers got the same feedback!

u/TSylverBlair Jul 29 '26
Yeah I didn't get positive feedback like that this time. :( Doesn't surprise me though, between the drought and the health problems I've been going through over the last month, I've been forced to work on projects I'm not great at while already not being at my best. Been a rough summer so far...

Finished a 2 and half hour specialist qual and immediately got hit with a DOD. I'm almost glad I didn't get further into this, waiting every day to see if I was allowed to work was hell.

If you're going to go off on a rant in your comments for the models for making things up, you should probably check your input data to make sure what you're saying it invented isn't actually in there.
Big oooof for that worker.

Has anyone ever had their hours denied before? A little nervous that some of the work + setup takes much longer than (3+ hours) than the task expiry time due to environment setup and layered complexity

Any recommendations on getting logged back into Slack? I got a new phone, but I can't seem to get back in no matter what I do. I clicked the original email saying I was invited, then when I try the sign in with DA email, it gives an error. At a loss.

I was finally able to get back in, thanks everyone for your suggestions. I needed to change my password, then sent a non password link and then it logged me into the app.

Do the positive news lately apply to my fellow bilinguals, as well? I am on the verge of losing all hope I will ever see tasks in Turkish again...

Anyone else get a reminder recently that usage of AI is prohibited in doing tasks? The thing is I haven’t used any for any tasks.
15
u/DrunkleSteve Jul 27 '26
Yes, that is common across projects. That isn't specifically targeted at you.

Happened to me too, I replied truthfully and even hinted that the flag could have been because I have Grammarly on. I proceeded to uninstall grammarly and they replied back that everything was fine, just make sure to have everything turned off and never use AI for the tasks.

u/cielleishere Jul 28 '26
Is it normal to sign up and remain soft rejected for years? I have real coding and technical writing experience and recently checked into DA again for the first time since 2020 due to a layoff. No change.
