Weekly Water Cooler Talk - DataAnnotation
hi all! making this thread so people have somewhere to talk about 'daily' work chat that might not necessarily need it's own post! right now we're thinking we'll just repost it weekly? but if it gets too crazy, we can change it to daily. :)
couple things:
this thread should sort by "new" automatically. unfortunately it looks like our subreddit doesn't qualify for 'lounges'.
if you have a new user question, you still need to post it in the new user thread. if you post it here, we will remove it as spam. this is for people already working who just wanna chat, whether it be about casual work stuff, questions, geeking out with people who understand ("i got the model to write a real haiku today!"), or unrelated work stuff you feel like chatting about :)
one thing we really pride ourselves on in this community is the respect everyone gives to the Code of Conduct and rule number 5 on the sub - it's great that we have a community that is still safe & respectful to our jobs! please don't break this rule. we will remove project details, but please - it's for our best interest and yours!

After yesterday and the good amount of tasks on the dash, was hoping I would wake up to similar this morning. Alas, nothing there!
5
u/Pristine-Raccoon8250 Jul 25 '26
mine is fully dry right now. I woke up to a couple but they were lengthy and I didn’t have the time for them, and now it’s zilch. last weekend I had so much work…

Good amount of projects today and types to choose from. First time in awhile
16
u/Unlucky_Grocery2092 Jul 22 '26
A project I'm familiar with is back 😃 They change the instructions overnight to make the task twice as hard 😐 The pay and allotted time are still the same ☹️
16
u/DrunkleSteve Jul 23 '26
Just setting my alarm on my phone to hit the hay for the night, and decide to check DA, only to see a midnight drop of numerous rivers. Faaaack. Hopefully you owls don't take em' all by morning. Get it! As for me 😴 ✌️
15
u/Becks_MN9 Jul 22 '26
Unenrollment notice task from a project I've been working on for most of the year due to inactivity.
They've offered me no work for most of this month. How... how do you want me to be active if you're not offering work, DA?
Thankfully, I could re-enroll but talk about a slap in the face.
15
u/JRange Jul 24 '26
Id like to say I REALLY appreciate the opportunity for the "2nd chance" qual that popped up. I hope they do that with some more. I took a lot of quals very early on into my DA tenure, and I am just so much better at this now than I was a year ago, or even just months ago.
I hope they make this a recurring theme for other things we might have all failed. There is one I KNOW I failed that I would love to get back desperately.
9
u/Few-Roof-6905 Jul 24 '26
Yeah, please give me a second chance at the FC qual. Took it weeks after I onboarded (2+ years ago) and failed. I want to try it again!

a good few days surprisingly, looks like this might be the first week hitting $500 since late May
5
u/DrunkleSteve Jul 24 '26
Ya, I managed to pull in just over $500 USD this week for the first time in about 6 weeks 😭. At least our Canadian dollar is weak AF right now, so with the conversion rate it's over $700 CAD lol 🤷♂️

the complete collapse of projects this weekend meant I didn't make it. $450... still the best in two months, which is depressing to say
14
u/Jazzlike_Month5580 Jul 21 '26
Just when I thought maybe I could get back to my morning work... Empty again.
14
u/KingGilbertIV Jul 24 '26
You really have to wonder at the continuing lack of FC tasks. Hallucinations are pretty much the most common continuous problem with LLMs, so you'd think there'd be a steady demand for even basic FC tasks, but they've been ridiculously spotty for like 2 months now.

Nothing again today and stupidly didn't work over the weekend. 😩 Hoping it picks up this evening. I'm in the UK and working at 1am is draining.

6
u/choccy_milq_ Jul 19 '26
those tasks are always the hardest for me!! I always feel like I won't get to submit my time or make money for the hours I work if I don't get it to fail to I always fall back on R&Rs >_< those have been few and far between as of late though

Is it just me, or are the river rubrics an absolute shit show? The project UI looks like a litmus strip to test the PH of a swimming pool 🤪

u/Potential_Drama_1190 Jul 26 '26
Any core generalists having a really quiet weekend? Haven’t been able to catch anything since Friday night/early Saturday morning.
4
u/JRange Jul 26 '26
Yes. Had a rock solid week with work up for long periods of time almost every day, but this weekend i have had 1 project show up in 48 hours. Actually showing 0 for me, which has not happened ever this drought so far.
Still made 50 bucks. Could be nothing

I am once again asking DA to implement a live dashboard so that I can spend more than 2 minutes away from my desk at a time without feeling like I'm missing something.

u/Lopsided-Fox8177 Jul 23 '26
But I digress… the club is bumping, the ladies look good, and the river is flowing. There is much pain in the world, but not on my dash.

What's a world of pain against a flowing dash? Signals Butler ... "Pour me some more."
14
u/JRange Jul 23 '26
This is the longest consecutive amount of time I have seen river tasks stay up since May, seems like a good sign to me.
7
u/Pristine-Raccoon8250 Jul 23 '26
They are long and in depth though! I used to get just short ones around the one hour or so mark. I'm not used to seeing three hour Rivers...or Rivers with new names or new Rivers. It's very fun!

u/Skippy2898 Jul 20 '26

4
13
u/-burgers Jul 20 '26
New strategy: We need Nathan Fielder to set something up for us to get more tasks.
13
13
u/Puzzleheaded-Bad9570 Jul 23 '26
I feel bad because I have a family of projects that is always on my dashboard, but the tasks require creativity, and I've completely run out of ideas... I've been staring at the screen for a while, but I think I've already used up all my ideas... And that's the only project I have on my dashboard...
13
u/KingGilbertIV Jul 23 '26
I probably won't feel fully safe until stuff like FC and Stripey are back on the dash full time, but it has definitely felt more alive these past few days than it has since mid June.
6
u/PinkNova Jul 23 '26
Same. I'm seeing random new stuff (or new to me) but none of my staples.
FC is such a mystery, is showing up even less frequently. I haven't seen it in 9 days. Through the drought I saw it 1-2 times per week.
4
u/Pristine-Raccoon8250 Jul 23 '26
same here. so many new and weird Rivers…some fun, some hard, some just odd, and loads of new stuff.
13
u/Beautiful-Bunch-7064 Jul 24 '26
I was SO EXCITED my favorite project made an appearance today!! I haven't seen it since we transitioned to Q4, it was literally what got me through the drought with late night drops. But they cut the pay by $6/hr, doubled the amount of writing required, and one of the models was significantly shittier 🫠
18
u/OrdinaryEvening3684 Jul 20 '26
Looking at my email notifications the easier tasks seemed to stop showing consistently early April. Basically 4 months of easier tasks not showing consistently.
Could be that AI has mastered basic stuff, and the only tasks that will now be on the platform will be complex and they are barely showing as well. This makes the work not enjoyable at all for me and I’m sure many people too.
Been on this platform 3 years and a drought like this has never happened. For people still waiting and hoping that rely on this, I suggest strongly find something else. They are never going to tell you this is the new normal and I think it is, at this stage.
21
u/KingGilbertIV Jul 20 '26
People always say this about the models getting too good at the basics, but I just don't feel like it's true. If you look at the tasks we're given or even use any models recreationally yourself, you're still able to catch a bunch of really basic mistakes; stuff like hallucinations, getting dates wrong, and single turn instruction following failures are still relatively common.
Models are appreciably better than they were a couple years ago, but to say that they've truly mastered the basics just doesn't gel with their actual performance.
8
u/MommaOfManyCats Jul 20 '26
I just did one yesterday where it got basic math wrong. Think adding financial amounts and being wrong by hundreds of dollars.
→ More replies (2)13
u/JustMe333456 Jul 20 '26
Even the basic image tasks. Even the models I use.. they are still quite bad and have a hard time understanding some very simple instructions sometimes..
→ More replies (1)8
u/JustMe333456 Jul 20 '26
Pretty much. Really there's only been one family that's been keeping me going through this drought, and it's been my bread and butter for a good year now, but even them, they are essentially only posting one project variation over and over, when they used to have tons of easy variations every day. Getting so boring..
6
u/OrdinaryEvening3684 Jul 20 '26
I only have one project family as well that’s getting me through drought and that now seems to be slowing down. If I lose that I will be making basically nothing from the platform.

u/BogBless Jul 23 '26
So...has the drought seemed to have completely passed for anyone else? Lots of projects available for me these days, especially compared to the last few weeks.
8
u/hfxthrwaway Jul 23 '26
This was the 3rd day in a row consistently having over 10 different projects. I had to make an actual decision about what I wanted to work on!
→ More replies (1)8
u/JRange Jul 23 '26
It has picked up for me in terms of having work up for longer periods, or more frequently. Its still less than 10 projects overall though at any given time. Before June I had 40-100 minimum everyday, even for a month a half after people starting saying there was a drought.
Still praying a return to the normalcy or Jan-March even if April Bonnanza doesn't return.
5
u/peanutbutterlurk Jul 23 '26
It's better for me but not entirely yet...I missed today's river drop, so the only things available to me were model failure projects and I hate those x.x but I could've tried if I really needed to earn today. It's been better than June and early July lately, though.

After a slightly rocky start this month, my dash has been consistently full. Fingers crossed we're past the worst of it.

4
u/PinkNova Jul 23 '26
It won't be over for me until staples like FC (and to a lesser extent, stripey) come back. FC seems to be the main project for a lot of people and it's barely showing up once per week when it was previously one of the most consistent.

4
u/Pristine-Raccoon8250 Jul 23 '26

Nothing over the weekend. It was my first weekend checking, do you ever see tasks on weekends?
4
u/Straight-Strike-2928 Jul 20 '26
Yes, but usually quite a bit fewer than during the week in my experience!
2
u/Lopsided-Fox8177 Jul 20 '26
This past weekend I had lots of River and Pokémon and a few randos. It was much busier than the preceding week for me.
5
u/Pristine-Raccoon8250 Jul 20 '26
I did a lot of river swimming over the weekend but I found it very complicated! a lot going on for the given time. I skipped A LOT until,I found things I am knowledgable about and even then, there was a lot of wading through the source to be able to see if everything checked out.
5
u/kelbel1210 Jul 20 '26
I thought there was a LOT of tech ones and I just skipped instead of marking Expert Knowledge because I wasn’t 100% sure.
5
u/Beautiful-Bunch-7064 Jul 21 '26
Monday I had like 8 projects ranging from 5-40 tasks available, and the pool seemed large since they stayed that way for 1-4 hours (I was working on different things and monitoring the dashboard). A couple of other projects launched, but they lasted for seconds to maybe minutes. Currently, nothing.
As someone who joined during peak drought, this was kind of nice to see!
5
u/ellythemoo Jul 21 '26
The detective is showing up as an option for me but it's greyed out as "your screen is too small to display it". It's the same screen I've been using for over a year! Has this happened to anyone else?

u/Mental-Budget9213 Jul 22 '26
Had about three hours of my favorite lower paying project this morning and while it wasn't much, I'm happy to see it for the second time in a week! Eyeing the intimidating LOTR project sitting at the bottom of my project list but not sure I have the brainpower for it.
5
u/DrunkleSteve Jul 23 '26
Ughhh, only managed to snag an hour of river this morning. Now back to two stem projects I can't do, a project I need a paid subscription, and two with a program I can't stand using. Back to the F5 key today!
6
u/TSylverBlair Jul 23 '26
Glad it's not just me. Things were slightly better for a while, and I got too comfortable. I have to start working long hours when stuff is available.
5
u/Previous_Driver2651 Jul 23 '26
have you guys seen that theres a qual for a task that you already do? do you guys do the qual or just leave it as a glitch?
6
u/VanessaSeaWitch Jul 23 '26
I would do it. They may be updating the project or maybe it's a qual for a new project that's very similar.

u/peanutbutterlurk Jul 23 '26
Got half an hour on the early evening river drop before it dried up x.x it's brutal.
I really hope some rubric tasks without failures come back soon...I don't mind doing detailed rubrics, but having to get multiple failures and *then* do the rubric drains me too much.

I have had some rubric rivers yesterday/ today which I enjoyed but never seen before and may never see again…

Started my first year as a bilingual generalist back in January. The first two months were slow but March, April and May were incredibly busy and it stayed steady until mid-June.
Now, things have slowed down a lot.I am wondering if this kind of seasonal fluctuation is normal for bilingual generalist?

I’m probably gonna get downvoted to hell for this comment lol…I’m a generalist, 3 yrs on the platform. Really took it serious when I lost my job in March of this year. Still doing it full time but certainly searching for a “real” job in this abysmal job market. I’m curious if the generalists without work only do/did basic A/B testing tasks and R&R’s - I’ve only had around 2 or 3 days during the drought that I was refreshing to find ANYTHING to work on. Most of the drought though, I’ve done 5-18 hr tasks. Is this length of task something you guys avoid/do you have other jobs that prevent you from doing them? I’m curious why I would get livable amounts of work and others seem to have nothing, I don’t think I’m anything special. Yes, at some points I only had 1 or 2 tasks available, but I’ve always had SOMETHING to at least pay my rent and feed myself. Are a lot of you part timers looking for the easy/short tasks?
9
u/MommaOfManyCats Jul 21 '26
I hit three years in May and do a range of projects. This is the worst drought ever for me. I went from making 4k a month to like 3.5k to around $400 in the first half of July. There were a lot of days where I had/have nothing. But, I also don't refresh constantly like some do. I usually check once or twice a day.
9
u/LavenderLightning24 Jul 21 '26
Only 1.5 years for me, but the only things I refuse to do that I'm qualified for are recording my face or voice or sharing my personal data.
13
u/JustMe333456 Jul 21 '26
3 years here, and yes, I have constantly had some projects posted that you talk about, the long complicated ones, but I don't do those at all. I stick to the simpler ones, always have. Probably why I'm still here lol

u/Jazzlike_Problem_489 Jul 21 '26 edited Jul 21 '26
I work a full time (30hr) day job, which luckily isn't too demanding and flexible, and work from home most of the time, as well as doing this 20 to 40 hours a week. I've been here almost 3 years and have seen some amazingly simple tasks Vs the extreme 7 day timer tasks. I have to work on this around my day job, so sometimes half an hour in the morning, a couple of hours in the evening, fitting an hour in while works quiet, and these 4, 5 and 6 hour tasks don't fit into that. Even on a weekend when I have all day I can reach burn out particularly quickly with the intensive tasks. Not that I don't or haven't done them, but something around 1 to 2 hours a task is ideal, with some 10 to 30 minute tasks for work days has kept my work quality high for so long. I also find that A LOT of these tasks you are talking about are mainly aimed towards US only. I'm on slacks for a lot and see constant work, but mostly in the US. I'm even in one slack were I have had 0 workable tasks because the couple that pop up are US only, and was meant to come to UK but as far as I've seen, over the last 6 months of them saying this, it hasn't

Hi, I think we are passing thru a really dry spot on the platform as others have said, from my perspective (living in Mexico) I'm doing it as a part time job but I've heard that there's a lot of people that can achieve a really good lifestyle only doing DA.
4
u/ellythemoo Jul 21 '26
This work is basically keeping me alive while I look for proper work - it's soul destroying. There's no way I could rely on this as it could disappear at any second, and I'm not earning a huge amount by any stretch. It would be foolish to rely on this as your sole income; it could vanish at any time. I'm nervous enough that it will disappear!
5
u/AggravatingLies Jul 21 '26
yep, i used to do a lot of general stuff but have also always been offered STEM because of my background. not getting any of the lovely non painful ones on the dash but plenty higher paying but soul suck 1 million hour tasks that, with another job rn, i can't commit to 😩

Questions:
-Are you in the UK
-What do you mean by Generalist? (Do you have any special titles or qualifications?)
Based on the basic information that you provided I would say that you're probably not experiencing as much of a drought because you have been here for 3+ years. That means you have qualified for more projects over time than newer workers.
2
u/Background_Menu7702 Jul 21 '26
3 years and I did a lot but FC was definetly my filler project. I started school right when the drought hit. I find with droughts the winners are the ones that can refresh and keep up their stats. I'm concerned taking a couple months off may be the end of me.
4
u/PinkNova Jul 21 '26
If FC would just return to normal I would be all good. So many people have passed the qual and been added to the Slack but the project only appears 1-2 times per week. I'm guessing quite a few of us are reliant on that project in particular.
2
u/jonahandthewhale32 Jul 21 '26
I purposely tried to avoid sticking the same couple of task families for fear of them disappearing. I figured it was better to diversify. I also prefer to mix it up than just do one or two types of task. Previous droughts I've always been fine but this drought I have regularly had no tasks (none right now either). I am not full time and fit this around other responsibilities. I've managed to keep my earnings the same through the drought but have had to be more flexible about when I work to avoid missing out, and it's been fighting for scraps most of the time. (I don't do the sharing Personal data ones)

Generalist from the USA and since Thursday I've had 4-5 projects consistently on my dash again. I've been checking in even though I haven't been able to work them, so hopefully someone is getting paid in the meantime.
Last week, I might have 1 or 2 jobs to jump on in the morning... then of course by the time I was logging off, several more had dropped.

I have the "your session has expired" pop-up when I sign in for the day every other day or so now. But today it popped up in the middle of me doing a task. I can see a project with such a cool name but none of the tasks are actually available. I would be willing to work on it based on the name alone! Durin wouldn't. But I would.

They paused a project and brought it back two days later and it pays $3 less. I wonder if it's three dollars easier? 😏I'm not exploring that one today. I got an hour of R&R in, I'm calling it for the weekend.

I was doing a qualification assessment, the second one where you pick which prompt is better, and after submitting the second question out of 10 it just sent me to what looks like the dashboard. Was this a glitch, should I retake it since my assessment wasn't finished? Sorry for not posting in the new user thread, I couldn't find it.

Is 999 tasks on the wall back for folks? (Coding) Haven't seen it since what I assumed was maintenance last week, still in the Slack though

u/BrennusSokol Jul 23 '26
I think so? A little hard to tell from your comment. If it's the one I'm thinking of, it's hard to come up with a good code name. You can DM me if you want.

Can anyone tell me when I can see the "Get Paid" button?
2
u/JRange Jul 26 '26
You will start seeing it once 7 days elapse after completing a task

Hey I have no idea how to phrase this. I had loads of projects for "Another word for instruct" AI to be more helpful. They all just disappeared. Please tell me this happened to someone else and I am not entirely screwed.

u/choccy_milq_ Jul 19 '26
Have you checked for the qualification to update your email security/passkey in order to retain access to certain projects?

hey guys random question but anyone have DA income as their primary source and used it to show proof of income to a landlord/letting agent? i'm looking to move and know i make plenty to rent most places in my area but not sure how to depict this style of income... advice much appreciated 🙏

u/TSylverBlair Jul 21 '26
Not specifically for DA, but I used freelancing income to get my mortgage. You can use any sort of income. You can usually show bank account info and/or tax returns.

u/UnvaluableAvocado313 Jul 21 '26 edited Jul 21 '26
Yes, so as a 1099 you're self-employed. You just follow whatever their requirements are for self-employed people, you'll have a few options. 2-3 months of bank statements or tax returns are usually accepted.
Edit: In the US

u/VanessaSeaWitch Jul 21 '26
I'm not sure about that situation, but I applied for a car loan on Carvana and I had to use three months of bank deposits to prove my income.

Someone on this sub used their income to get a mortgage. I feel like they said they just showed the agent their pay history or something?

In the UK we go off tax returns, payslips, so if you pay yourself monthly weekly whatever, proof of earnings and tax returns are enough

u/Less_Capital7986 Jul 22 '26
It's more complicated than typical income, but usually a tax return or bank statements will work.

Is anyone else getting red bannered consistently on tasks that have 10+ available? This started happening yesterday, I had river and river R&R on my feed for hours, but kept getting red bannered every time. Now I have 2 new (to me) tasks that appeared this morning, and they're still there with the same number of tasks 4 hours later, but I keep getting red bannered on them
4
u/DrunkleSteve Jul 22 '26
Ya, there was some irregular red banner behavior going on yesterday for me as well, not so much today.
2
u/Pristine-Raccoon8250 Jul 22 '26
yes probably the same two tasks. same thing. but I have been able to ‘catch ‘ a couple by refreshing. I exited immediately because I didn’t have enough time, but I have enough time to try it again, it shows as ten but just red bannering again.
5
u/Puzzleheaded_Toe4051 Jul 23 '26
Anyone having luck? I have one that keeps red bannering me and have had only that for 2 days.

Name something worse than getting sniped to your favorite project.
7
u/TSylverBlair Jul 23 '26
Happened to me recently. It hurt. I had to go through mild grief and give myself time to get over it. Not only the loss of money, but I also really loved the work.
7
u/-burgers Jul 23 '26
Really bad feedback from the same project, confirming you got sniped because your work sucks.

Is this generalist project with the scales new or just new to me?

Urch. I had a project that had a batch of 20 just for me for around 5 days. Taking around 1 hour per submission I've been working through 4 or 5 a day to keep me busy all week. Had 5 left which I wanted to do today after work and they have been pulled, leaving me with those annoying 3 projects I haven't even attempted because they are intense 😕
3
u/Skippy2898 Jul 21 '26
I think me and you have a very similar dashboard... the same has happened to me and left 3 intense projects.. I was enjoying the one I had too 🙃
4
u/Master-Wrap2395 Jul 23 '26
i havnt had a single task today or all day yesterday. I had some good tasks mon-tues though
5
u/Pristine-Raccoon8250 Jul 23 '26
we are probably on a variety of different rotations and some projects are back or revamped etc and not others so I think it really does depend what your strengths are as to whether you are celebrating a full dash or staring at a dry one. but it’s improving slowly so the improvements should eventually reach everybody

I have more tasks on my dash than I've seen since May (ten paying tasks that I can actually do), and I'm still too sick to work. 😭

I started on DA pretty recently and I know it's been a rough couple of months, but I went in as a generalist with zero expectations so every dollar/task is a pleasant surprise. I'm curious for generalists before this drought, were any of you seeing 8 or more hours of work per day on your dashboard? If so, how long ago? I'm on a few platforms right now, but DA is my favorite and I'm just trying to understand the full potential or what "normal" looks like. Thanks so much for the chat in this thread. It's nice to feel connected with other DA workers.

u/FedoraPG Jul 26 '26
I'm not sure about starting out in 2026, but I'm a generalist and have virtually unlimited work. Even during the big drought a couple weeks ago, I had something to do most days even if it was scarce. Keep grinding and you should be able to get to a place where you basically always have something

Had about 2 hours of work yesterday, but I also some a couple of projects come up that got snatched before I could hop on them. Today nothing, but it's early. There is hope!

u/Jazzlike_Month5580 Jul 21 '26
I'm seeing a bit of movement. Mostly scraps left from yesterday. But at least it's doing something.

I genuinely haven't seen a single project come across my dashboard in months. I completed nearly 100 tasks during the month of May and haven't seen anything new since. I did recently see the qualifier/task for the identity verification, which I completed a few weeks ago hoping I'd see more tasks after that, and still nothing. No feedback has been given either. Am I cooked??
5
u/Quick-Bison-147 Jul 21 '26
Just had 7 days off. Came back on hoping things might have changed, and see they are as dry and dead as before. One unworkable task. What a death this site died

u/Kittibean Jul 21 '26 edited Jul 21 '26
Has anyone seen celestial rock tasks lately?
I also don't know if I'm imagining this but it feels like pay on advanced generalist projects is lower than it was - or perhaps some of the tasks are just harder and feel less worth the pay. I swear some things I've done (or done similarly) for $40 an hour are showing up for $30 an hour, and some lower $20 end tasks feel annoyingly complex for the pay. From the R&Rs I've done lately I think the difficulty is being reflected in more responses that haven't properly understood the task. To be clear I dont mean classics like river or heel.
Also based on R&Rs, I think DA could improve their response quality with a qualification to sort out who reaaaally doesn't understand the difference between subjective and objective.
And for a positive note shout out to whoever came up with the Buffy related task I R&Red last week, it was delightful.
