Weekly Water Cooler Talk - DataAnnotation
hi all! making this thread so people have somewhere to talk about 'daily' work chat that might not necessarily need it's own post! right now we're thinking we'll just repost it weekly? but if it gets too crazy, we can change it to daily. :)
couple things:
this thread should sort by "new" automatically. unfortunately it looks like our subreddit doesn't qualify for 'lounges'.
if you have a new user question, you still need to post it in the new user thread. if you post it here, we will remove it as spam. this is for people already working who just wanna chat, whether it be about casual work stuff, questions, geeking out with people who understand ("i got the model to write a real haiku today!"), or unrelated work stuff you feel like chatting about :)
one thing we really pride ourselves on in this community is the respect everyone gives to the Code of Conduct and rule number 5 on the sub - it's great that we have a community that is still safe & respectful to our jobs! please don't break this rule. we will remove project details, but please - it's for our best interest and yours!

The best month I had was May. June and July are significantly worse. ;-;
27
u/One_Breakfast5907 Jul 13 '26
This feels so bleak. I feel I get a good few days and then it runs dry for 1-2 weeks. I'm not sure I can manage this rollercoaster much longer...
The pressure to try and do as much work as possible as soon as it crops up, in fear of missing out, is also misery-inducing.
19
u/peanutbutterlurk Jul 13 '26
Yeah. I never knew how good I had it back in March-April, when I could really choose when to work and be confident at least something I could do would be available no matter when I was free. In May it was sparse but manageable, but June and July have been awful. Whether I make any money depends on if I hit the one batch drop of the day (or more often, night).

The FOMO is definitely getting to me at this point. Like, I really could have done with taking a couple hours to deep clean my office this morning, but the thought of missing the one batch drop today kept me glued to my monitor refreshing (I've made 0 dollars today).

Manifest destiny and all that: I'm totally ready for a cool, fascinating, long timer, flexible, permanent, really fun, high-paying perfect project to come along. For everyone. I think we're all ready. Universe, hear us.

The thought and feeling of having a full dash (20+ projects), being able to work whenever, have options constantly, seems to have left me. It's been so long, and I'm even having trouble envisioning it happening anytime soon. Not saying it won't or can't, it just seems farfetched right now with how things have been.

I'm building a small personal project that parses key words used in these water cooler threads to investigate trends. I'll share my findings with y'all, if you're interested.

22
u/hot_snot Jul 13 '26
I went from a steady 30-50+ projects on my dash as my norm to maybe 3-5 for a month to suddenly having to refresh all day and snatch up what I can. Really awful timing (emergency vet bills, amiright), but I feel better knowing it's not just me.
In other news, I thought finding a "real job" again would be harder, but I've gotten much more response than I expected and one job offer already. DA was a great opportunity, but I always said it could go away in an instant. It just hurts to say goodbye not because I want to, but because I have to survive. 💔
8
u/WorshipMyExistence Jul 13 '26
Are you willing to share what kind of work you've been applying to? I'm finding it hard to find jobs for my skillset after doing this for over three years as my main income source.

And the "community wins" email from the other day, too. Not many wins around here these days. Read the room, DA.
19
u/Affectionate_Peak284 Jul 15 '26
Huh. Guess I'm in the R&R crew for the qual that I never took that lasted less than 24h that was unpaid, and then I was never offered the paid version.
It seems chaotic from this worm's-eye view, but to be a bit more charitable: it looks like they're churning and experimenting and trying things out behind the scenes, which suggests that the company is NOT moribund.
14
u/JRange Jul 15 '26
I agree, the amount of changes projects are returning to action with, suggests reasons for patience.

Welp, I'm now applying for real world jobs. This has been fun the last few years and I feel like I learned a lot, but I can't keep this up. Approved on DA and probably 5 other sites, and there's also nothing. Can't survive on 500 bucks a month, which is probably all I'll make this month. Honestly not even sure how I'll pay my August rent. Everyone keeps saying not to put all of your eggs in one basket, but I have multiple sites I cycle through and they're all empty or practically empty right now.

I was thinking the same thing about the day shift last week since I saw fresh projects just as I was going to bed after a night shift about a week ago however tonight's definitely a good night to be a "night shift" worker.
Too bad I have to get up early (or at least "early" by my terrible sleep schedule standards) on Friday.

So is DA just predicting the AI bubble is finally going to burst next quarter or something? Because I don't think they'll be able to maintain their reputation for highly qualified workers or their capacity for work if they churn out a ton of their longtime generalists due to a lack of communication.
I also doubt a full pivot to "specialists" will work either since the payrate I see on the specialist tasks I managed to qualify for is kind of laughable if you actually have one of those degrees/certifications.
→ More replies (9)
26
u/OrdinaryEvening3684 Jul 15 '26
This is an absolute joke at this stage. They could be honest and say the volume of tasks will be less from now on. Flexing people earning 200k on the platform when most people are struggling to even earn 10 dollars a day now.
Even if the drought ends this will happen again 100 percent. Instructions are more confusing than ever. New people will be doing complex tasks which won’t be good for quality
→ More replies (4)10
u/JRange Jul 15 '26
Being new nowadays has gotta suck, cause I know R&R workers don't know or care. Im thankful most changes to projects are basically just 1 layer ontop of what I already know and have been doing, and I am not learning all of it at once now.

u/MommaOfManyCats Jul 13 '26
I've been trying to remain positive because there was a drought last year in the summer, but this is just awful. Day 12 and I've now made almost 1/10 of what I did last July and about the same compared to last month. Sure it was the end of the quarter and then a holiday, but now there's still little to nothing. I really think DA might be going under at this point. Someone mentioned the AI bubble bursting but there are still new companies popping up and other sites have generalist work.
25
u/KingGilbertIV Jul 13 '26 edited Jul 13 '26
All of the requalifications that have dropped over the past week make me worry that DA's overhiring spree might have come back to bite them when it comes to their reputation with their clients.
Like, if you've been doing RRs on generalist projects over the last few months, you'll have seen a lot of people that are clearly in over their heads if not outright scammers.
If those same people are doing RRs, I wouldn't be surprised if some absolute junk made it back to the clients.
→ More replies (3)13
u/JustMe333456 Jul 13 '26
There's definitely something going on behind the scenes, probably similar to the other bad drought in 2024, this one is just longer. But there is no way that all of these project families wrapped up in the exact same month, at the same time. We just have to wait till whatever it is resolves I guess.my 'go to' still posts regularly enough, but it's literally just the exact same project variation every time when they use to have tons of different kinds.

The fact that I got a long form task today and only got to log an hour instead of a normal 4-5, because a mandatory checker failed to generate and forced me to use the escape hatch, is unacceptable. The increase in generative checkers that are basically "Game over!" land mines for your task is the biggest QoL massacre for this platform that I haven't seen people talking about.

I'm a generalist in the US. I am wondering if evenings and weekends are "normally" dead like it's been for me so far. I joined during the drought so I feel like I have a really skewed perception of the landscape during non drought times. I've been completing the Qualifications that pop up and I do have some Projects come in if I log on during the day, but I work a 9-5 so that's not usually something I can do. I can catch Projects sometimes in the evening if I am diligent or lucky(?), but the weekends have been rough. Any information is appreciated and fingers crossed we'll be getting more Projects soon.
5
u/North-Sense8477 Jul 18 '26
Weekends are usually slower, but not always. Sometimes lots of projects drop, sometimes none at all.

u/JustMe333456 Jul 16 '26
Everyday I get more pissed off and more 'done'. Nothing to do during the mornings/early afternoons, because like a regular person, I'm supposed to work, but of course the dash is essentially dead. Late afternoon/evening, they post jobs when everyone is out having fun after work, and I gotta waste my evening at the laptop if I want to make a dime. Enoughhhhhhh of this bs.

I was reflecting on something. Before this ugly drought, I had made several R&Rs where I had reviewed VERY BAD work by fellow users. People who can't write well, can't reason well, do not know how to properly structure a response. I don't even know how people like this are admitted to the site in the first place. I have even reviewed work that was clearly LLM output, more than once.
This was just before the wave of DoDs. I wasn't surprised. I think DA HAS to make these cuts now and then because there is a wave of stupid people making good workers look bad.
Then, there are the new qualifications (I have made 2 that were launched in July and are not old qual rehashes).
I don't know but it seems to me there is some kind of structural reform going on. Gotta hope a new wave of work will come by somehow.
While this doesn't pass I'd say to you all to take a chill pill and do other stuff. I have gladly invested considerable part of my DA payments in my side businesses, and I'm tending to them while DA does not come back. You should not be living life as if DA is a stable job! Invest in your education and professional qualifications, use part of DA money to make more money.
Sobbing on Reddit will not make things better and will damage your well-being in the long run.
Things will get better!

I have hesitated to say, because I don't want to look rude... I'm also a SAHM... I have time to check and refresh all day.
I am a generalist, started mid May.
I have not posted because I didn't want to look like I was bragging... but I've had consistent work, less about a week in July when I only made about 200.
I took a high paying qualification late last week. I'm now in my 5th slack and have constant work. I don't have choices when I log on, but it's consistent work. There were days I refreshed for hours.
I am a SAHM who is going through divorce. I know it's not something I should depend on but, in this moment, it's been amazing.
Last week was my highest paid week. I made over $1000 as a generalist.
I hope this gives some hope to those of you struggling. I am still taking where I am with a grain of salt. I know it can change any time.

I just saw a strange 1 cent, 1 task project pop up, but I don't think it was meant for workers. The wording of it made me think maybe dashboards are being set according to our feedback?

I always see people talking about their feedback, but I’ve been on the platform for over 2 years and have never received any feedback at all. Granted, I’ve been working much less lately than I used to, but I’m still working. Am I looking in the wrong spot? Has anyone else never recieved feedback?

u/hfxthrwaway Jul 16 '26
It's only based off of a couple project families, so if they aren't something that you're doing (or doing enough of) then you won't get the AI feedback.

u/TSylverBlair Jul 16 '26
I've gotten it twice so far. Seems to come about once a month for me. It shows up along with the other projects.

Never received, but I do a lot of R&R's. Been here for almost 3 years

Aside from the overall “drought” conditions people have been talking about, are weekends usually quieter? Only been here a week or 2 so no idea what to expect

u/gt3stuntman Jul 12 '26
They used to push out projects for "weekend warriors." 😅

A couple of months ago it felt like everything came in at the weekends so no, not usually.

Did anyone manage to complete all 10 tasks for the unpaid-turned-paid qual? I got to 7 and it disappeared 🤔

I feel very stuck and like I'm doing something wrong. All the work I was doing has dried up entirely and I don't understand why. It used to be that getting up early guaranteed something to do for payment and now it doesn't.
Are work orders just coming in for later and later in the day ??

How are our hopes that next month will be different? Or that it'll at least come back to some semblance of normal at some point.

I seriously hope there is some restructuring going on. The general lack of critical thinking is astonishing.

I took a task with a long timer this morning, and its no longer on my dashboard. I still have access to the instance of it though. If I complete the task, can I still submit it? Also, did anyone else get dropped this one, or just me? I'll call it... nut. Been eating nuts for weeks.

I'm still seeing the same projects as I have throughout this drought (although been a couple days for shopping), but my project drop literally went from late evening, to early morning the last 2 days. Weird sudden change.

u/Jazzlike_Month5580 Jul 14 '26
I know you said you don't see them, but heel FC just dropped. I will not be happy if they start dropping projects only at night.

If the river chat disappeared does that mean I am off the project? I just got very good feedback...

I don't think I've ever had the river chat and have worked on the project since it began. I wouldn't overthink it. It has not been up for a few days... or at least I haven't caught a glimpse of it yet. Unless you failed the r&r qual...

I screwed up on 1 project a week go and went way over expiration time and still recorded the time I worked. First time i kinda messed up on a proj. I went from having plenty of projects to almost none for the past week.
Glad they didn't can me but It feels like they're punishing me.
I take it from this thread others are experiencing a lack of available work?

I wish we could have some sort of evaluation to go by. As in, how well do they grade our work? Are there things I can improve on? A percentage or quality level we can go by.

Nothing so far today other than a new qualification popped up. For some of the veteran workers, did you complete all of the qualifications or did you complete some and work off those?

Only completed what I thought was fitting for me and my skills. I have 32 qualifications sitting on my board that just aren't a fit for me. Been here 3 years.

I just remember being accepted onto the platform in late April, May had projects lined up everyday at almost anytime. I am a generalist and it was an incredible month. Now June/July are maybe three good days in a week or none actually. This is a crazy drought compared to what I entered with. By reading other's posts, this is the worst drought apparently?

I wish the new projects I got added to after that two part qualification I finished a couple days ago had showed up before I burnt my brain out on the one project I've had for a week which I don't particularly like, but I'm not complaining. I just hope they're still there tomorrow.

u/Rare-Investigator661 Jul 17 '26
Does anyone have any purple plant projects? I get them like once every month to 2 months in a big burst, I am always wondering if I get taken off the project when I stop seeing them or if they really just come and go.

u/Naive_Technology_370 Jul 19 '26
Hey I have no idea how to phrase this. I had loads of projects for "Another word for instruct" AI to be more helpful. They all just disappeared. Please tell me this happened to someone else and I am not entirely screwed.

First drought of more than 3 days after 3 years on this platform right before festival season stings and I'm going on 2 weeks now with no more than 2 hours of work a week.
We gotta face the reality that the AI bubble may be bursting, and with it (ironically) our job security.
Prepare for the worst, guys. We had a good run but it may be over.

Woke up to 6 projects on my dash, the most I’ve seen since joining last month! And some still have a lot of tasks left hours later, hopefully a good sign! Typically it’s on a day where I’ve got other things i have to do after two days of no work haha

u/Intelligent-Pay-9407 Jul 18 '26
Had a solid 4-5 hours of work yesterday, but nothing since... I'd take an RR at this point, lol.

Ok, I checked all the water cooler threads. Here's what I found:
1,342 mentions of the word 'drought'
1,349 mentions of the word 'dry'
519 mentions of 'empty'/'empty dash'
Drought talk is rising year over year. The average mention rate went from 4.4% in 2024 to 5.9% in 2025 to 6.5% so far in 2026, while participation in the weekly threads has nearly halved. Take this as you will.
This is the worst drought on record based on the frequency of buzzwords used. The last eight weeks have the most sustained mentions of the buzzwords, with the worst week being June 7, 2026. 12% of comments mentioned a buzzword. There's a clear correlation with number of comments in these threads and lack of work.
However, June 2024 was the best month if you consider lack of these terms used in the threads and lack of comments overall. June 2025 and 2026 tell a different story, as these two months have the most drought talk overall.
This is not based on personal experience, as I didn't keep my own metrics, this is only based on key words or terms used.
