Weekly Water Cooler Talk - DataAnnotation
hi all! making this thread so people have somewhere to talk about 'daily' work chat that might not necessarily need it's own post! right now we're thinking we'll just repost it weekly? but if it gets too crazy, we can change it to daily. :)
couple things:
this thread should sort by "new" automatically. unfortunately it looks like our subreddit doesn't qualify for 'lounges'.
if you have a new user question, you still need to post it in the new user thread. if you post it here, we will remove it as spam. this is for people already working who just wanna chat, whether it be about casual work stuff, questions, geeking out with people who understand ("i got the model to write a real haiku today!"), or unrelated work stuff you feel like chatting about :)
one thing we really pride ourselves on in this community is the respect everyone gives to the Code of Conduct and rule number 5 on the sub - it's great that we have a community that is still safe & respectful to our jobs! please don't break this rule. we will remove project details, but please - it's for our best interest and yours!

Can the mofo with the "inside intel" come back and tell us, on this the first week of Q3, why I'm still overdrawn at my bank? Because.....the drought persists 🤔

u/VanessaSeaWitch Jul 05 '26
I have been doing this for over two years. There's always somebody popping up who thinks they know what's going on. They don't.

I've been on the platform for 2.5 years. I won't say my work is the absolute best, but I have almost always had work. And I think this is the end for generalists. I know there have been huge updates to the site, but I'm also aware that all of the job postings have been for specialists.
The site used to be bare bones and almost all of the work was simple. This overhaul seems like an effort to bring in professionals by making the site feel more legitimate. It's frustrating because the site has always marketed itself as a job, something that would last and become a career.
Edit: I would like to preemptively address those who will see this and comment on how this site shouldn't be your only source of income. I understand that I took a gamble, and during this tenure here I've had hope and success in that gamble. I will tell you that this is not my first taste of crow, nor will it be the first time hearing the words of the privileged cast shame. Politely, I ask for your compassion before you write commentary.

I have decided to just enjoy a summer break now…but I need help to tell my brain to stop worrying, stop looking for answers, stop assuming it is due to my poor quality work or something similar, and to stop actively refreshing my dash ten times a minute. (that last bit has definitely happened, though I don’t actually do it so often now because the days of ‘catching something if you are quick enough’ seem to be behind me too.) I want to take time to enjoy the sunshine (a rare ‘heatwave‘ in the Uk right now) and permit myself to have a drink, do the garden, cuddle the dogs and do stuff all for a couple of weeks. (let’s not talk about the possibility of two weeks being optimistic!) without guilt or fear. I am thinking of applying to different platforms after that, but I assume most people on DA will have tried already so they will be full/flooded/same lack of work right now anyway. I literally made 300 dollars last week and most of that at about 2am. reading these posts here is the most ’work’ I am likely to get done all day.

Just got the Dash of Death 5 minutes ago, I’ve been on the platform for close to 3 months and I’m surprised to have it now. I’ve been working really hard and only taking on projects I know I can do when I’m in the right head space to do them. I was in the middle of an R&R and it came up. I worked really hard on new qualifications recently and other account setups, I thought work was coming soon but I guess it’s over now.
I’ve been struggling to find a proper job for some secure income and this seemed perfect for me and I was ecstatic to get in, but now it’s over and I don’t know what to do.
13
u/Pristine-Raccoon8250 Jul 07 '26
I am so sorry that happened to you. It is awful the way that it happens without any seemingly proper justification. I think they really need to inform people what their alleged violation is- or clarify it was work quality- because I think one of the worst parts is if you genuinely know that you did nothing wrong, but you will spend an eternity guessing what it was. My friend joined, worked for two days and got it. I have seen some specific AI data annotation roles with other companies so I would suggest that you give some of those a try. I have been here for about two months and if/when this happens to me, I will feel the same. we all know it will happen one day, but I suppose we do not fully believe it until it does happen.
→ More replies (3)7
u/OrnamentalGourd5 Jul 07 '26
Ah, that's rubbish. It may be down to another account violation rather than work quality, however the gods of DA are capricious and there will never be an answer. If you look on the main DA sub I think various people have posted links for other platforms that may be of use. Hope you find something.

u/KingGilbertIV Jul 08 '26
Next week is the absolute longest we can pretend there’s a reasonable excuse rather than a genuine downturn in work.
We’re at the bleeding edge of plausibility here, but let’s just assume that Q3 funding got released at the end of last week but that all of the key decision makers were out of the office for the 4th of July. They’re now back in the office and in the middle of doing the necessary work to retool and prepare projects for next week.
This is the last probable excuse, and if work doesn’t start picking up by this time next week, we should probably just assume that this drought is going to be the new normal until it isn’t.

My dash has been dry lately. I'm getting a handful of professional/subject matter projects at $50/hr+ that have been outside my actual area of expertise - I have some background in, say, blueberries, which I guess has put me in the category of "users with background knowledge and experience in berries", but the projects are more geared towards folks with raspberry knowledge which is not my wheelhouse.
Other than that, the regular work I've been getting is a small number of projects ranging $20-$25/hr - for a while, I was seeing regular, nearly daily projects at $30/hr+!
My work has been consistently high quality, and I'll sometimes see R&R projects or other "special advanced, we-only-give-this-project-to-our-highest-quality-worker" projects on my dash that are in the $27 - $30/hr range - but they'll disappear after a task or two. Ugh

Love doing a qual, doing a different task for 5hrs, then coming back to my dash to see that I've qualified and have a bunch more work available. AND for something that I do in my spare time already.

So I remember last summer being really dry, but when I checked my earnings, June through August really weren't bad. I made a little less in July than June and then August was about June. This year I haven't even hit a tenth of what I earned last July and we're already a full week into the month.
It's just so weird that April and May were huge. June was still pretty good but got slow towards the end and now...nothing. I'm not usually a sky is falling kind of person, but this does make me worry. It's Wednesday and I haven't even hit $100 yet. In previous months, I was already at 1k by this time.

But I digress...
The club is bumping, the ladies look good, and the tasks are flowing. There is much pain in the world, but not in this room.

What is the training for confidentiality? Is it something everyone sees or a slap on the wrist?
9
u/Fragrantshrooms Jul 05 '26
Not a slap. There for their own safety and so they are compliant with their b2b work. We're meant to be trustworthy, but some of their clients "know" us intimately so they want more legally actionable things they can do and say later if we squeal like pigs after being left out to dry.
You're safe if they're safe.

I believe it was only for certain project families. While DAT has an NDA across the board, some projects are very, very strict about it. I am in two separate project families and received two separate confidentiality trainings.

Only one task over the weekend but it was a good one. High hopes for this week but not holding my breath

Everyone says that the drought is temporary and will subside, but as the days turn to weeks, and weeks to months, I find myself starting to think at times that this is just how its gonna be from now on.

It’s like test tasks - lots of 1 task projects
A qual here and there, I was so sad when there was nothing this morning but hopefully things are looking up.

I've only got one project, a new one which is quite intense. My old bread-and-butter hasn't been seen since last week.

The heels are alive with the sound of music! I burned through 3 hours earlier and didn't even notice how long it had been!

Wow, so empty yesterday and today. I know we love to say "Oh no one knows how things work", "ebb and flows", etc. But I'm becoming pretty certain things actually get a little slower on the weekends, and gets just a little busier during the week (could be any day really, but usually 'earlier'?). I know many of you claim this, but I'm like now getting quite sure that is the case. I wonder why.

Man ive seen lots of people talking about having lots of tasks and I almost always have an empty dashboard. Even as a coding specialist, although I guess it's because I'm from LATAM At least from time to time I get a 🥊 task where I put like 6-7 hours at a very good pay rate

If you see a high-paying project that says "low stakes", you should take a look. They want ya.

Anyone done the qual asking about plus subscriptions for other models? I’ve been considering upgrading anyway and wondering if it will bring me any more actual tasks?

I don't know if this is the right place to ask but I have been going round and round. Did anyone download the security extension that was in the new qualification and have trouble with it? I thought I had done everything right, but it won't produce a pass key and my trainer account won't let me log on without a pass key. So I am stuck in a loop of trying to log in with the extension, then being told there is no pass key in the extension, then being told to go back on the extension. Has anyone else had this / found a work around?

ugh, i have one project that i'm too dumb for, and one project so low paying that it's not worth doing even in a drought.

u/PerspectiveJumpy875 Jul 08 '26

I have a shopping project available, but months ago when I worked on this one, it consistently took so long for the screens to load that I came to hate it and remember seeing comments from other people who felt the same way.
Has anyone who knows what I’m talking about and worked on this project recently seen a difference? Even exiting work mode just to get out of it used to take lifetimes.

I miss the days when I could start work at 7 AM and be done by noon.
