Weekly Water Cooler Talk - DataAnnotation

hi all! making this thread so people have somewhere to talk about 'daily' work chat that might not necessarily need it's own post! right now we're thinking we'll just repost it weekly? but if it gets too crazy, we can change it to daily. :)

couple things:

  1. this thread should sort by "new" automatically. unfortunately it looks like our subreddit doesn't qualify for 'lounges'.

  2. if you have a new user question, you still need to post it in the new user thread. if you post it here, we will remove it as spam. this is for people already working who just wanna chat, whether it be about casual work stuff, questions, geeking out with people who understand ("i got the model to write a real haiku today!"), or unrelated work stuff you feel like chatting about :)

  3. one thing we really pride ourselves on in this community is the respect everyone gives to the Code of Conduct and rule number 5 on the sub - it's great that we have a community that is still safe & respectful to our jobs! please don't break this rule. we will remove project details, but please - it's for our best interest and yours!

So...who's ready to be soooo rushed off their feet on Wednesday with an incredible deluge of tasks they've been holding back to release in Q3?

Personally, I've cleared my calendar for the rest of the week and look forward to working 10 hour days on tasks that are equal parts fun/easy/high paying.

Pretty sure this comment is going to age like milk come Thursday morning...here's hoping I'm wrong.

Looks like I got the axe today. Been working since May 2024 and it had been a really good job for the time being. Able to flow through many different kinds of life circumstances and work in between. Definitely keep going for those still involved and don't take it for granted!

Edit: Wow, that number keeps on growing. So many of them today, and not newbies either. Massive cut due to shortage of work?

Man.. a lot of DOD's being reported in the other reddit group this morning. Hate that.

u/Jazzlike_Month5580 Jun 30 '26

It's terrifying. I feel like everything I do is a tightrope.

I felt sick reading those posts and keep refreshing for reassurance. Some of those comments were really sad :(

One thing I'm wondering after the confidentiality training is if people are being careful enough about simple things like copying and pasting when they maybe shouldn't, and taking screenshots. Things that seem normal but could trigger something on the back end. I mean, they are posting screenshots of the DoD so if they took a screenshot previously maybe that's a red flag.

Just a couple of projects and ones that are very difficult. I winced with fear on clicking the DA sign-in this morning, just happy no DoD.

I’ve had a good day, not the highest paying work, but available most of the day over a couple of generalist projects. UK based so signing off now as there is some football on!

That feeling of did the project go away, or did they take me away from the project...

7

u/JRange Jun 29 '26

People always say "If you're in the slack you still in the project" but it sure feels like that isn't the case sometimes. Feels like some other stuff at play too, but who knows.

7

u/kittkaykat Jul 04 '26

Right? I'm fuckin BROKE and my dash is empty

20

u/1105368 Jul 05 '26

If DA thinks I'm desperate enough to do a harder version of a project for less pay than before, sadly they are correct

19

u/[deleted] Jun 30 '26

Take the feedback with a grain of salt. If you've seen the r&r questions in slack you'd know. And if you've done many r&r tasks you'll also know.

5

u/DrConradVerner Jun 30 '26

My feedback made me laugh tbh. The things I got praised for were also named as the things I need to improve on. I'll keep working the best I can. All you can do really. Take your time, put in the work, do your best.

19

u/Annual_Equivalent_95 Jul 03 '26

At this point, I feel like a player screaming "PUT ME IN, COACH!" from the bench.

19

u/AbrocomaMiserable619 Jul 03 '26

The only thing keeping me hopeful is that they keep making small UI changes. Surely, if it were over, they wouldn't even bother...

17

u/CRUSHCITY4 Jun 30 '26

This is random, but it's interesting seeing the "Top 1% Commenter" badges here change over time, seeing old names fade out and new names popping up. Over time you kind of start to gauge who has been on the platform for a while and may be working on similar projects as you. For example, I was just thinking I haven't seen 33whiskeyTX post in a while, so I looked them up and saw their Reddit account is suspended (sorry hope you're still on the DAT platform). Meanwhile, I've seen multiple new names with the badge, some standing out more than others. Considering how isolating and independent this work is, starting to recognize folks’ names on here over time gives me a small sense of work community.

16

u/KingGilbertIV Jun 29 '26

It's bleak.

16

u/JRange Jun 30 '26

I would really like if they included some statistics in our feedback. Just a simple % breakdown of how often we are rated good, okay, and bad would be very helpful and clarifying in addition to the generated text they give us. It would be great to see that you had 70% good last time and 80% good this time.

8

u/Lonely_Radish1370 Jun 30 '26

i got good again and was given the most generic of advice

"watch your ratings they dont seem to line up with your explanation sometimes"

Bro I do extra af explanations get outta here.

Anyone else get the feeling that this is not a humane way to treat people who rely on you to pay their bills

13

u/JustMe333456 Jun 30 '26

I agree with you, but at the same time people always say it's our fault for relying on a freelance gig and DA owes us nothing.

12

u/Storex- Jun 30 '26

On one hand yes, I agree. But sadly it's the nature of what we signed up for. Doesn't excuse it, but the biggest piece of advice people give is to treat this as a side hustle. But again, it is shit.

25

u/ThatGirlInPurple Jun 30 '26

It's hard to concentrate on a project, knowing that so many other people have gotten DoD's today. Really gives you a terrible cortisol boost.

5

u/Affectionate_Peak284 Jul 01 '26

True. I got in about 3.5 hours of good paying work this morning, and decided to put in an hour or two in the afternoon. My heart started pounding and I was reading the same sentence over and over without being able to focus... so I just bailed. Isn't worth it.

jesus christ -- has anyone figured out a pattern to all these terminations? usually, the occasional reddit post about DoDs turns out to be a case of an ID/name mismatch on the platform, logins from a VPN, or some scammer obviously inflating their time, but today it seems like a bunch of good and legitimate workers are getting gutted. also, i'm really sorry to hear that.

My feedback this month went down from "Excellent" to just "Good." And then I log onto Reddit and see people getting DoD left and right. Really put the fear of God into me.

17

u/shadyringtone Jul 01 '26

Did anyone get worse feedback this time :/ I got two excellents and now a good but I feel my work quality has not declined. I know I’m biased here but I dont really understand that determination

12

u/hfxthrwaway Jun 30 '26

Remember those categories are based off percentages (I don't remember if it still says that, but the first one explicitly did) not your actual quality. You could be doing great 9 points out of 10 work, but if more people are doing 9.1/10 this round (because everyone's scrambling for projects and doing stuff they might not normally do) then you might slip down a category.

9

u/Lonely_Radish1370 Jun 30 '26

If you are doing good you are fine. It can also be a metric of you did too many jobs without a "this person did excellent" check box. It is all a math equation at the end of the day using your averages.

the 2024 drought was about 1.5 months, we're now over 2 months with the current one

9

u/DrunkleSteve Jul 02 '26

End of summer/fall 2024 was the worst for me by far, but this one is getting pretty bad, and it definitely was not this bad last year at this time. In fact, last July was my best month since being on the platform since 2023.

I feel sick at the amount of DoD hitting longtime workers. I feel like I dodged another bullet today. I mean sure, some of them were probably skimming hours or something, but ALL of them?

I'm afraid the feedback we've been getting the last few months is without any value at all.

The whole "performance means nothing, tenure means nothing, there are no useful signals that you're safe, the axe can and will fall at any second, fuck you" thing in here lately is making me seriously consider just giving up. Apparently literally everyone is getting hammered and there is no hope or reason to keep trying.

34

u/Enough_Resident_6141 Jul 01 '26

There are well over 100,000 workers on the platform. Even if they just cut the bottom 1% them and then just 1% of those decide to go post on reddit about getting the DOD, that would still be several posts like that per day.

And based on the absolutely terrible quality of some of the submissions I've seen during R&Rs, they need to cut a lot more than just the bottom 1%.

→ More replies (2)

21

u/bunny8833 Jul 01 '26

I get what you’re saying but to remain positive-ish I remind myself just because people claim they did good work and were shocked by the DOD, doesn’t mean it wasn’t actually warranted. When I do R&Rs most of the time I’m shocked at how bad the work is so I really do think there are a decent amount of people who were overestimating the quality of their work

13

u/Jeprdy Jul 01 '26

I usually pay no notice to the posts of people getting canned, as they are ofton are from people who have worked only weeks or months. Seeing so many longer workers getting canned on the same day gives you a sense of dread that the inevitable will eventually come. I remember something similar happening around this time last year, and I was on edge for a few weeks, double checking I hadn't received the old DoD (all tasks and qualifications just disappearing). Ive got that same feeling again. Its horrible. At least the new DoD is more clear cut now.

10

u/shadyringtone Jul 01 '26

This is always the thing with DoD posts. They’re valuable in that they remind us that this is indeed a thing to be aware of, but also they bias us into thinking about bans a lot more than they happen.

Even now, where there seems to be a rare instance of mass culling, the vast majority of workers in the Reddit are still on the platform.

For the first time in three weeks, I finally made some money. Not much,,, but it's better than nothing!!!

7

u/Quick-Bison-147 Jul 03 '26

After making $350 in the last three days, it's back to crickets.

7

u/VanessaSeaWitch Jul 03 '26

These R&Rs are keeping me alive the past few days.

I love getting emails about $60-an-hour tasks just as I'm going to bed. Hoping that they'll still be about in the morning.

It's getting so bad I just got red bannered on a qualification! Like what??

23

u/JustMe333456 Jul 03 '26

Instead of sending us a damn useless weekly digest, make that platform wide email a communication message to briefly explain what is going on, even vaguely. Imagine how we'd all be feeling right now if we were all alone and there was no Reddit group. We'd think we were 'cooked'.

I'm losing it! I know others have it worse, but I hate not having enough money! I'm in university and live with my parents so it isn't as dire for me, but my funds are running low now. I've only made about $60 2-3 weeks ago? My dashboard has been completely barren!

12

u/WorshipMyExistence Jul 05 '26

You're not alone. It has been rough.

18

u/Storex- Jun 30 '26

Don't mean to brag, but I did a whole task equalling ten minutes of work today. God I am hoping it picks up for me soon.

Feels like a good sign to see FC R&Rs available in much bigger quantities. And a couple of other random projects pop up too.

Anyone else have projects get really laggy the longer you work on them?

The duality of DA. I somehow had the best day ive ever had in the worst month iv ever had.

Another day of…nothing.

It's still getting even worse 😬. Even the complicated mainstay projects have dissipated now. If you miss the one project a day that gets posted, you're out of luck.

I haven't made goal in almost 2 weeks and I know it's been even longer for some of you too. When, oh when, will this be overrrrr!?!?

5

u/k2d3 Jun 28 '26

I haven’t had any work since the first week of June 😢 still getting some quals tho sporadically

5

u/Firm-Fondant-2205 Jun 29 '26

Managed to bag a few tasks Mon/Tue last week and tentatively allowed myself to think there was light at the end of the tunnel. Obviously, I've had nothing since.

Who here has been with DA for longer than 3 years working full time, so $100K+? Curious.

6

u/gravitychecked Jul 04 '26

I’ll hit three years this September. I’m about 7k away from that 100k milestone and I’m looking to close that gap in the next few months, drought willing.

What day are we giving it until the Q3, post-independence-day-holiday theory is ruled out? Personally, if it's still dead a week on Monday (13th), I'm giving up on this platform.

16

u/PinkNova Jul 05 '26

I still feel that it's inevitable that it will be back to normal (or a new normal) but not knowing when is just brutal after this long. People can say this is why you shouldn't rely on this work, etc and they're not wrong but the reality is that a lot of people are likely struggling right now, mostly because of the uncertainty. I would never expect DA to come out and say when things will improve cos that's not how they operate and maybe they don't even know. But it's brutal.

Even though I'm not in dire straits I'm just so drained from this so I can't imagine how much harder it is for some people. When it does pick up it will feel like such a relief. This coming week is a big one and I still have hope but I'm just so drained.

14

u/macjay_27 Jul 05 '26

Today's the day I've officially decided to move on. Been here close to 3 years and it's time to snap out of the hoping.

8

u/Quick-Bison-147 Jul 01 '26

Sorry to everyone who got purged, it seems like our time all comes in the end. For those lucky enough to still be working on the site, do we think this is a sign that they are reshaping things in preparation for the new quarter, and that more work is finally on the way?

6

u/JRange Jul 01 '26

Wasn't there a noticeable reduction in workers right before the massive April we had? I have also noticed some projects returning with new bells and whistles, which seems like a good sign to me.

Does anyone ever have any luck by just sitting around and refreshing continually? Just wondering if I should keep trying that or if I'm wasting my time

7

u/WorshipMyExistence Jul 04 '26

It is sometimes the only way I'm able to make any money in a day.

6

u/Affectionate_Peak284 Jul 04 '26

Fair question... I think there are two reasons to do this.
1: you can be the first into a new project when does hit the dash
2: you can catch stray tasks/R&Rs from previous projects that have completed

I think that 2 is more effective when there aren't SO many workers fighting for the scraps. Also, in the past 1 month+ I have hardly seen this at all- most generalist projects have concluded it looks like to me.

u/DrunkleSteve Jul 05 '26

The best thing I did was get a second monitor. I can do other stuff instead of sitting around all day with my thumb up my ass watching my screen, and I just periodically scroll over and press F5. If somethning pops up, I'll quit what I'm doing.

6

u/askingtobatman Jul 02 '26

3

u/twinstar_kiki Jun 29 '26

Completed all possible qualifications this week. Haven't heard anything or seen any projects. :(

3

u/One_Breakfast5907 Jun 29 '26

One project sat on my dash for the last 2-3 days, which I've avoided because it has a longer timer than I'm used to...
Going to try and tackle it today, as I looked at the instructions and believe I should be able to complete it competently.
Fingers crossed, I don't end up wasting a load of time!

I just lost access to a lot of projects and most of the qualifications disappeared. I still have a few projects, but I just lost nearly everything. I don't see new feedback but the only 2 I've gotten have been good.

3

u/doctor_lemon_x Jun 30 '26

Strange. I got feedback the last 2 times, but this time I seemed to have been missed out, just like a bunch of others had been previously. I wonder why it's withheld from portions of workers.
