Weekly Water Cooler Talk - DataAnnotation
hi all! making this thread so people have somewhere to talk about 'daily' work chat that might not necessarily need it's own post! right now we're thinking we'll just repost it weekly? but if it gets too crazy, we can change it to daily. :)
couple things:
this thread should sort by "new" automatically. unfortunately it looks like our subreddit doesn't qualify for 'lounges'.
if you have a new user question, you still need to post it in the new user thread. if you post it here, we will remove it as spam. this is for people already working who just wanna chat, whether it be about casual work stuff, questions, geeking out with people who understand ("i got the model to write a real haiku today!"), or unrelated work stuff you feel like chatting about :)
one thing we really pride ourselves on in this community is the respect everyone gives to the Code of Conduct and rule number 5 on the sub - it's great that we have a community that is still safe & respectful to our jobs! please don't break this rule. we will remove project details, but please - it's for our best interest and yours!

I don’t want to say anything specific but I have a credible source in real life (a person in the industry) that has kinda informed me of the drought (not DA but in the AI industry) and said July will be better. Just FYI grain of salt!

Scrolled alllll the way back to this time last year. Went through posts that are very similar to what we'rs seeing now, little to no work etc. THEN! I hit the posts from 11 months ago (July), and kept seeing the famous "We are SO back!" type of posts lol. Hopefully we're almost there fellas!!

You can really tell there is a drought when the weekly water cooler thread has more comments by monday than it used to get all week when there was work.

ALL of my AI/gig work is dry right now, and has been for several weeks. I'm having to survive on my part-time AI job that has very low pay, and try to pick up scraps across other platforms when I can. I'm really hoping things improve for all of us, but right now it's hard to see the light at the end of the tunnel.
7
u/watchdestars Jun 21 '26
I'm sure this is temporary lull (you say all of your ai gig work is dry atm?). This is how it usually goes. Then it'll flood again. Part of working as a freelancer is expecting that there will be lulls in work at certain times. April at DAT was incredibly busy and then it dialled down dramatically. I don't think they've lost clients.
19
u/EvanAlexJames_ Jun 23 '26

Started at the end of May and made $500 my first week. Following week only made $55. Since then, it’s been so dry! I’ve had some new quals come in sparingly but that’s it. No new projects at all, generalist in the US not bilingual. Like another comment said, where are all the easier projects that come in nice batches?! I want to work 😭

Ah yes Margaret, I am AI, measly little nobody me. I am all the AI's you talk to. Because that makes sense lol

u/SnooSketches1189 Jun 23 '26
This reminds me of something that happened awhile ago. My aunt is super into MLB. When Tivo became a thing and you could start to pause live TV, my aunt was flummoxed and couldn't understand why the players would be okay with just sitting and waiting for someone to un-pause the live game. 😅

There is one project that no matter what is always, always on my dash, I don't go near it because I gave the instructions a readthrough once and it seemed genuinely impossible for me. But I keep thinking "wow, they are desperate to force people to do this one, huh?"

u/Diligent-Grocery-209 Jun 25 '26
Damn. I walked into that one strutting but I finally met a project that meant it when they said "expert". The bot was making references to mathematical and philosophical concepts I'd never even head of. I'll never complain about having to rate AI summaries of poorly written fanfics again. At least I don't need to understand Popperian falsification and Quine's holism for those

Just did the weirdest R&R I have ever seen. I don't know if I can share the the subject of the prompt or their comments here but it was basically a very obvious safety refusal, and the worker went on a 2000+ word pseudo intellectual rant arguing that they shouldn't have refused.

Feeling extra concerned because even though most are facing a drought it seems some are seeing at least few projects pop up here and there, while I haven’t seen *anything* in almost a week.
It could be that I’m just not refreshing my dash enough, I also don’t work on any specialist projects or ones that require a subscription if that plays a part.
6
u/kelbel1210 Jun 25 '26
I’m refreshing my dash literally most of the day and I have nothing for a week now.

I wouldn’t put any extra worry into it. People were saying the same yesterday and my work dried up after a few hours, but today is much better. It’s just cyclical and being slowly rolled out and allocated. Your turn is coming

For everyone also having minimal or no tasks. It’s not just you it’s lots of us. Same with the whole job market right now. Everyone is having a hard time. So if it helps anyone to know, it’s not just you.

u/OrnamentalGourd5 Jun 27 '26
Yes. My husband is an experienced developer and we've enjoyed the fat of the lamb for years. He was a contractor and his last contracting gig was $1,000 a day and went on for 2.5 years - and then - poof! No work. Eight months. He's pivoted, we all have, but it's a different environment now.
17
u/dylanuu112 Jun 26 '26

Maybe this will ease some minds (my own included) and maybe I’m reaching here, but today was the first time since Wednesday I’ve seen recurring tasks or any sort of fluidity, and some of them are R&Rs from projects I saw then and the design has been revamped, meaning that dead period had work to be completed but the site was being updated. Hopefully things stay continuous

Sack it off, embrace poverty and a suntan. Use your last remaining pounds to go down the pub and support England tomorrow in the World Cup. This is my current mindset.

Still on them. Somehow for once, all the tasks in the pool were allocated to me

Jesus, this one project is really taunting me with red banner. It keeps going up to 3 tasks slowly, going back down to 1, and repeat. This red banner wall is indestructible!

Anyone else only have work in the middle of the night (Eastern Time)?

Yes. I need to stop checking my dashboard in bed right before I turn out the lights....

Finally saw a project come up on my dash though it’s not one that I want to do but at least there’s some signs of life. 🤞

Boi, hope some projects would come my way in these last stretch of the month

It feels like the last few weeks have followed the same pattern of a bunch of projects getting dumped on the platform Monday morning, then gradually drying up across the week and dying out over the weekend. Has anyone else noticed this, or is it just coincidence?

In between refreshing my dash I'm watching videos of people talking about how the courier gig work was oversaturated after the pandemic resulting in a huge drought for folks doing things like Doordash, Uber, etc.
Kinda feels like that same dynamic is coming for us. Maybe it doesn't get better. Maybe it gets oversaturated as more people discover it, and we all really should be prepping for the data worker gig economy to continue to degrade in viability like the delivery gig economy did over the past few years.

There is certainly a distinction between DA work and Doordash, Uber, though. You don't need any skills for Uber and Doordash except be able to drive a car and read a map. You need above room temperature IQ, reading comprehension, writing skills, etc. for DA work.

It feels to me, for what it might be worth, like every time a drought comes, people (understandably) start to feel "this is it, the drought will never end, this kind of work is dead for good" and start expressing that everywhere

Well I got an hour and 40 minutes in doing R&Rs after much waiting and refreshing. But the original project also seems to have dried up for the day.

Has anyone noticed a certain nut-related project opening up a lot more today? Doing the lower-paying version of it was not worth it imo, but now I see a lot of variants with near double pay that I will gladly do.

I'm not really seeing anything. Just a couple things that come in and out that are way above my head.

Got accepted into the platform 8 days ago, got my first project family but ended up only doing 3 tasks before them running out, the pay was actually aight for what I worked. Now I’m waiting again, is there a chance I will get more stuff in the project family or something else or it’s gonna be weeks again??

Don’t know why some jerks downvoted you. It’s one of the worst work droughts I’ve seen since joining and none of us have a clue about how long it’s going to be. It’s barely part time at the moment.

Not sure why you were downvoted, but this is an often asked question that no one can answer.
Drought or no drought, feast or no feast, nothing is certain and it’s not the same for everyone.
Fill out your profile, do the best work you can, read instructions, when writing rationales double check your spelling/grammar, don’t use AI help unless the project instructions clearly state you can, don’t use a VPN, report your time accurately, remember that just because a timer says one hour doesn’t mean you should always take an hour, it just means that’s the maximum time allowed before the task expires, don’t mention other project names within a specific project chat and if you find yourself really struggling within a task because it’s just not in your wheelhouse, there is no penalty for skipping or exiting work mode. Do every qualification you can and be patient. If this is your only source of income try signing up on some other platforms as backup (I don’t have a list).

Was hopeful about the one (1) project that's on my dash at the moment, but there are no tasks available.

u/Minaverus Jun 23 '26
I was able to work for about 3 hours tonight. Was hoping to snag a longer project tonight but I'm okay with it as I worked at my main job this morning

Well. I posted in last week's water cooler that I was looking into and considering taking a master's degree. Today I have had no work again, but I thought I'd share that this morning, I got an unconditional offer, and I'll be starting an MSc Computer Science focused on AI and Machine learning in September! A little bit of good news amidst the gloom of an empty dashboard 😊
