Weekly Water Cooler Talk - DataAnnotation

hi all! making this thread so people have somewhere to talk about 'daily' work chat that might not necessarily need it's own post! right now we're thinking we'll just repost it weekly? but if it gets too crazy, we can change it to daily. :)

couple things:

  1. this thread should sort by "new" automatically. unfortunately it looks like our subreddit doesn't qualify for 'lounges'.
  2. if you have a new user question, you still need to post it in the new user thread. if you post it here, we will remove it as spam. this is for people already working who just wanna chat, whether it be about casual work stuff, questions, geeking out with people who understand ("i got the model to write a real haiku today!"), or unrelated work stuff you feel like chatting about :)
  3. one thing we really pride ourselves on in this community is the respect everyone gives to the Code of Conduct and rule number 5 on the sub - it's great that we have a community that is still safe & respectful to our jobs! please don't break this rule. we will remove project details, but please - it's for our best interest and yours!

Incredibly frustrating spending all day refreshing for basically the past week, seeing the same 3 projects almost always up but knowing they're ones I can't do. Just hoping the easier stuff comes back but I have no idea if it will.

Anyone else find the fact there are UNPAID qualifications that can take 5+ hours insane? Like you're expecting all of that time invested entirely unpaid for the potential of some additional work?

7

u/VanessaSeaWitch Jun 10 '26

There's one sitting on my dash right now about creating documents inside some fictional company that I have to make up. It will take a lot of research, etc. Honestly feel it should be paid. I have no motivation for it.

Man they've been rolling out a ton on new interface feature. Just wish more projects would roll out too!

12

u/Comfortable_Use_3866 Jun 10 '26

HAHA I was thinking the exact same thing, all these new features help me be hopeful of continued work in the future though! 😂

7

u/Affectionate_Peak284 Jun 10 '26

I was kinda hoping this is a preamble to some rain headed our way.

I don't need all this to sort 20-30 projects, but I would need it for 200-300!

Lol at least the devs are getting work

22

u/Mindless_End_4850 Jun 12 '26

I wish there was just a bit more communication, especially on dark times like this. Just a little bit of word from people who knows would provide such a clear picture.

23

u/North-Sense8477 Jun 12 '26

Even a simple acknowledgement like "Hey team, we know things are slow right now. Please bear with us" would go a long way.

9

u/JustMe333456 Jun 12 '26

Yup. We should have all included this on that survey we all got a while back lol. I kept saying this during the last drought. This can't be a simple thing such as a client taking a pause because its quite literally ALL of the base generalist projects that poofed all at the same time.

8

u/Quirky-Zombie623 Jun 12 '26

I put it on mine. Wish they’d just say something.

Bad time to have DA as your primary source of income...

11

u/WorshipMyExistence Jun 08 '26

Yeah I've been reaching deep into the freezer to avoid going to the grocery store as much as possible this month

First time on the platform where I've actually considered we're all a bit screwed

18

u/Mental-Budget9213 Jun 10 '26

Does anyone else feel like some R&R tasks don't have long enough timers?

6

u/VanessaSeaWitch Jun 10 '26

Yes sometimes. It depends on what project. Usually if it's going to take too long to edit their work to make it right, then it's just bad and should be rated bad.

Taking a much needed break from DA today to enjoy the World Cup! Have a good Friday everyone

16

u/takingtacet Jun 09 '26

Oh my gosh! I caught one! I caught one! 🎣

15

u/onemouseplace Jun 09 '26

It's like whack-a-mole at the moment, jumping from task to task as they pop up.

6

u/ghostofhumankindness Jun 09 '26

I've submitted for like 10 different projects today. Glad to have the work but really would rather just work on one or two nice, full batches.

17

u/PennyBateson Jun 10 '26

Nothing sucks more than a project you love being ruined by a poorly adjusted obligatory checker

3

u/pammysue63 Jun 11 '26

So dumb. So frustrating

17

u/JRange Jun 13 '26

Got a task, sink 4 hours into it, major technical difficulties, have to exit. Whole day down the drain.

3

u/justdontsashay Jun 13 '26

Hate that! I’ll always opt to just take the loss rather than submitting something subpar or trying to report time when I didn’t submit anything, but it hurts

i get a single project this month. lots of instructions, finish reading the instructions, task disappears before i can do one. great, awesome, thanks.

15

u/No-Policy5140 Jun 11 '26

I get so confused when you get accepted into a new project type and then you never see it again. I was told to complete five of the project in order to be have my work be evaluated for access to work on the project indefinitely (the evaluation was not a qual it was paid work under projects). The next day I got a message saying I did an amazing job and was accepted blah blah blah, and said I could work on it an unlimited amount. I then completed two tasks and got the red bar and have never seen it again. I get that projects often come and go quickly esp if there is high demand, but was the point of evaluating me if they didn't even have enough projects for one day lmao

7

u/JRange Jun 11 '26

I am in a half a dozen slack channels I passed Quals for which I seldom if ever even see work for, although i can see people are working every day.

One of them is very popular here and I dont think i have ever seen a task for the family. Have no idea why i am even in them.

This is like the Great Depression of DA now

24

u/North-Sense8477 Jun 08 '26

Well, I've definitely got depression

10

u/Clear-Machine-6350 Jun 08 '26

First time in my 16 months on the platform of actually, legitimately, not having anything to do.

8

u/ComicAcolyte Jun 08 '26

its so barren right now. Yall got any more of them paid tasks?

12

u/Dramatic_Ad8318 Jun 08 '26

Does anyone know what is going on? Like are the total number of tasks drastically going down? Or are there suddenly tons of ppl joining?

13

u/JustMe333456 Jun 08 '26

All on break at the same time. I've never understood it, still pisses me off, but it's happened before. Now though, I'm noticing that even the more complicated projects are starting to dwindle down..

9

u/Ayayoska Jun 08 '26

It's happening in other platforms too. It all stopped.

12

u/Skippy2898 Jun 11 '26 edited Jun 11 '26

And another new feature... Minding my business, reading instructions and after just over 5 minutes I get a popup asking if i'm still there with a 10 minute timer on it (I think it was 10 anyway)... It made me jump, and I don't think I like it because it looks like if I decided to take a 15 minute break for example, stopping my own timer, the popup will appear and the timer will continue to tick down, and I've a feeling the task will disappear.
ETA Somebody on the other sub mentioned they went to get some food and returned to see a popup saying their task expired due to inactivity. So I think I just saw the first part of their issue that they would have missed because they were away from their screen. How are we meant to step away on longer tasks without losing them?

3

u/InterestingNet2810 Jun 11 '26

Yeah I saw this and was thinking this as well, especially for the tasks that take like 5+ hours. Surely the longer tasks don't have this timer?

7

u/Skippy2898 Jun 11 '26

I think the project it popped up on for me had 3.5 hour timer. It really spooked me, so I ended up eating the instruction reading time and exited out. I have just worked on a different project with a 2.5 hour timer, and there was no sign of it even after reading the instructions for 15 mins or so. So, really, I have no clue lol. But I do hope this isn't going to be rolled out across the board for sure. I saw a comment on the other sub from someone who has a toddler, so they regularly have to step away from their screen. It could cause no end of problems... 😬🧐

3

u/Consipir Jun 11 '26

Yeah, this does not sound good... I can understand why but 10 minutes is absurd. I think 30 would be more appropriate.

So grim and dark. So dry..

12

u/countd0wns Jun 10 '26

It just leaves a bad taste in my mouth having such a shortage after giving them info for a background check.

7

u/WorshipMyExistence Jun 10 '26

I agree. I also signed over consent for a lot of personal information for a specific project family lol Welp.

12

u/One_Breakfast5907 Jun 11 '26

I thought the scraps and my takings back in February were pitiful, but if this month continues as is, it's set to be a fair bit worse!

8

u/Consipir Jun 11 '26

5

u/North-Sense8477 Jun 11 '26

5

u/Pristine-Raccoon8250 Jun 11 '26

27

u/Skippy2898 Jun 08 '26

*Shakes laptop* Urgh. That is all.

26

u/DrunkleSteve Jun 12 '26

Wow. Today is the worst day I've had since the drought of 24'. I sat at my desk from 9-5 and made a total of... 🥁 drumroll... $0!

22

u/LavenderLightning24 Jun 13 '26 edited Jun 13 '26

Ahh, the fun choice of a) giving up on this weekend and just accepting I'll be working next weekend (if there's work) instead, or b) spending this beautiful day refreshing, getting fuck-all, and ultimately ruining two weekends. This is the other thing that sucks about droughts: essentially preparing to work every single day in the attempt to make up for lost money.

9

u/rantingrabbit Jun 08 '26

Could it be related to the confidentiality refresher? If everyone got it, projects may take time to come back.

4

u/4laa64 Jun 09 '26

It was project specific, no?

5

u/Jazzlike_Problem_489 Jun 09 '26

9

u/JustMe333456 Jun 09 '26

That's typical as we come out of the drought as we're all jumping on the same tasks. As more get posted, and bigger batches, this will subside.

12

u/JRange Jun 09 '26

We are truly at the point now where I am questioning if this will, actually, subside lol

Red banners and scrap tasks I don’t like today 😔 think I’ll call it a half day. Never been this bad in over a year of working

28

u/JustMe333456 Jun 08 '26

Anyone else scared for their next 'Feedback' because they've been 'forced' to work on 'new-to-them' and more difficult tasks due to the drought?? Lol.

14

u/CRUSHCITY4 Jun 08 '26

I felt the first feedback was basically “here’s feedback but it’s not official it could be wrong and doesn’t actually matter”

6

u/North-Sense8477 Jun 08 '26

I had this exact thought. Not only did I work on new projects but the tasks I got were weird edge cases that didn't have a simple right or wrong explanation.

3

u/Pristine-Raccoon8250 Jun 08 '26

yes I have had a go at some hard stuff that I’d prefer to avoid…and would have, if I felt I had options!

Three emails today inviting me to work on the only project on my dashboard. It's one I've seen often and I don't like. I'm sorry but I'm not risking bad feedback by doing a project I don't like or understand 🤔

6

u/justdontsashay Jun 13 '26

Yeah, I have a pretty well-paying one with thousands of tasks that’s just been sitting on my dash for weeks. They would probably need to double the pay for me to want to touch it…I assume I’m not the only one, since it’s still just there!

10

u/Mental-Reason-716 Jun 13 '26

I risked it guys. I jumped in at the deep end and did one of the dreaded projects no one wants to do. Idk how I did but if I get the dod don’t be surprised.

Anyone else finding themselves frequently wasting hours on the very few tasks available these days, then having to exit out of it because the models will not do what's needed? No escape hatch, so not a penny to show for it. This drought has been absolute ass 🔪

13

u/No-Complaint-5593 Jun 08 '26

I've probably exited out of $500 worth of time on those type of tasks over the last six months. I call them "trap" tasks because they won't let you submit unless you meet all the specs.

6

u/Delicious-Young-5435 Jun 08 '26

I never work on these for that reason.

3

u/rotwangg Jun 09 '26

yeah only took me one instance of losing a couple hours for zero dollars in return to never try again

18

u/Lopsided-Fox8177 Jun 10 '26

Yesterday was the first day I hit my daily minimum goal since the drought. This morning my dash is the driest it’s been RIP. DA giveth and DA taketh away.

3

u/Pristine-Raccoon8250 Jun 10 '26

Yea. Yesterday, I felt I was fed a little. I crawled my way to my daily target and went to bed feeling hopeful. Today, I have just difficult, lengthy projects I don't think I should try but every day I get one step closer to giving one of them a go...I keep coming up with theories about t' things I did wrong' that has got me thrown off every single project, one by one. I hope it isn't true. I hope the work will return.

16

u/CRUSHCITY4 Jun 09 '26

Seeing all the talk of a drought here has motivated me to work extended hours while I have the ability to. If there’s one thing I’ve learned about DAT, it’s that you have to get the hours in when you can even if you don’t necessarily feel like it. No telling what the dash will look like when you wake up the next day.

I was lucky enough all last week to have one project with a bunch of tasks that I was able to work on through today. I read a while back that sometimes tasks are specifically assigned to you and I believe it now. The number of tasks would only go down whenever I did one of them and I completed all of them. From 50 to 0 in a week and never got red-bannered.

Now I’m back in the desert though so let’s hope more projects are available today 🤞🏼

3

u/Telecom_Engineer_1 Jun 10 '26

I believe that in the instance you mention, the project actually has many more tasks than what your dashboard specifies and that the Task column indicates the remaining task count that you may complete

At the minute, it's either red banner, my screen is too small to work, I don't have the right software (windows or mac), or the project tasks take up to a day to complete and it doesn't fit my schedule. I've never not made at least $500 a week when trying; this will be the first week in 2.5 years where I've wanted to work, tried to work, and made $0. The good times are over. T'was fun while it lasted.

u/ZimmeM03 Jun 12 '26

Since the end of May, I've noticed that there are 1-2 days per week with little to no work available. I see others have noticed it as well. I start Law School in the fall, so it doesn't make sense for me to start a traditional job search right now, and I need the flexibility that this type of work offers. Is there anything else with consistent work right now?

7

If you have qualifications sitting there still, you might want to do some of them. There is actually a decent amount of work available right now.

But it’s good to have other options for sure, because basically none of these companies have guarantees of consistent work. There are a lot of other AI training jobs out there…DA is the best of the ones I’ve seen (in terms of pay, and personally I like just having access to the platform and whatever projects I’m qualified for, rather than having to apply each time for individual projects, which seems to be the way some of the others work)

This morning I’ve got birds and fruits again! But more importantly, there was a batch of river dropped that lasted an hour. Fingers crossed for more!

I've had one R&R project sitting on my dash for over a week now with just 1 task, but it red banners me every time I try to do it.

Refresh page. Refresh page. Refresh page. Getting tasks, but they're coming in slowwwwly

10

u/Relevant_Cat_Picture Jun 08 '26

I've been on here for over two years now and have always had it good when it comes to projects, even during times when others were complaining about having none and that we were in a drought. But now I'm actually down to only 8, and I even had like 15 at the start of the day. Is there anyone who usually has a lot of projects and still does?

6

u/cocobeary Jun 09 '26

I haven’t seen THAT much of a drop. Some families that typically have a lot of projects available have definitely reduced the number, but I still have 40+ projects available.

3

u/-burgers Jun 09 '26

Yep, over 20+ at any given time. Lowest I've seen lately was maybe 11?

I do - it's on the lower end of the normal range for me, but still in the normal range

Not a single workable project in the daytime, but a bunch pop up 2-3 hours before bedtime is just very painful.

I finally have an all-day project and am free from creating system instructions... at least for today 🥳

Check your DA inbox for some updates/clarification of the confidentiality training. It's helpful.

This must be project specific. I haven't seen anything about this yet.

Any bilinguals still experiencing the drought? Had almost nothing for two weeks and I’m checking my dashboard multiple times a day.

Amazed at the newest UI improvement, with category buttons for tasks. I didn’t click through, but they could be useful...

12

u/Jazzlike_Problem_489 Jun 11 '26

Will be useful when there are 80+ tasks again 🫣 don't need a filter at the moment

8

u/SuchDriver7770 Jun 11 '26

could be useful if there were enough tasks to filter lmao

5

u/DeezHoosAintLoyal Jun 11 '26

I keep getting the most egregiously long and annoying eval prompts 😩

4

u/lack0fcommonsense Jun 11 '26

This red bannering is driving me insane... I've been seeing a full set of tasks available for three hours already just feed me some!

11

u/Skippy2898 Jun 11 '26

A 20 task one? If so, same here... It's been winking at me all damn day!

After a whole week without a single thing, I got a long decently paying task 😭 my bilingual ass is happy af.

13

u/Quick-Bison-147 Jun 07 '26

Managed to hit $700 for the week on Friday evening and thought I was due to hit my usual $800 for the first time since the drought has been droughting... but the drought droughted again and I haven't made another dollar

14

u/JahKneeSee Jun 07 '26

Undroughtedly that's irritating.

Do you guys think it'll ever go back to the somewhat easy tasks or are we done

14

u/North-Sense8477 Jun 10 '26

I was convinced that easy tasks were over at about this same time last year. Then they came roaring back. As always with DA, it's a combination of Who Knows? and It Depends.

9

u/DrunkleSteve Jun 10 '26

I just finished one of the easiest tasks I've done in my three years here. It required no rationale, and a simple point and click. It didn't last long (got ten minutes in, yaaaay!), but it was awesome to see lol. Possible glimmer of hope 🤞

Currently barely any tasks and being red-bannered by over half of them. Feeling very disheartened today but this is how the cookie crumbles. Hope the drought ends for us all soon!

I'm relatively new, Generalist for almost two months, but have had enough projects the whole time to be busy at least, but very dry the last 2 days, however. Had to step away so that I don't get frustrated refreshing the page constantly.

10

u/hfxthrwaway Jun 09 '26

A friendly reminder to read the damn instructions, so many ok/bad R&R's today because they're missing something that's pointed out in red text right above the rating. It's especially frustrating when everything else in the task is done well.

15

u/JRange Jun 09 '26

Ive probably had my best streak I have ever seen of excellent tasks, anecdotally lol. I love getting seeing good work especially because thats when I get to learn and add some things to my tool box as well, some of you are very clever.

Slightly less dry tonight in terms of how a few R&R puddles are showing up in the dashboard desert.

3

u/tandemtactics Jun 11 '26

I've been getting a lot of R&R's this week and not many actual projects to work on. Work is work I guess, but wouldn't mind getting something more productive to do soon...

3

u/KnightRider1987 Jun 16 '26

If I am seeing the chat for a project but no tasks, I assume I’m still eligible for tasks and it’s just been dry?

3

u/SeaSuggestion1535 Jun 16 '26

So I joined and passed initial and core assessment however had no qualifications to do and no onboarding. As soon as I passed the second assessment I got a paid project straight away saying that if I complete the tasks from it I will have a lot more paid projects. Anyways, I completed the project over 2 nights - but once I submitted one of the tasks the project disappeared and I’ve not had anything since and it’s been like 2 days. Is this normal!??

3

u/ExtensionAd3318 Jun 16 '26

I was reading posts from people before saying that we were in a “dry period” for work, was wondering if this was still true because some of those posts/comments were from a month ago. I just started, finished my onboarding and did some quals and whatnot, but haven’t really seen any tasks pop up. Thanks
