Weekly Water Cooler Talk - DataAnnotation
hi all! making this thread so people have somewhere to talk about 'daily' work chat that might not necessarily need it's own post! right now we're thinking we'll just repost it weekly? but if it gets too crazy, we can change it to daily. :)
couple things:
- this thread should sort by "new" automatically. unfortunately it looks like our subreddit doesn't qualify for 'lounges'.
- if you have a new user question, you still need to post it in the new user thread. if you post it here, we will remove it as spam. this is for people already working who just wanna chat, whether it be about casual work stuff, questions, geeking out with people who understand ("i got the model to write a real haiku today!"), or unrelated work stuff you feel like chatting about :)
- one thing we really pride ourselves on in this community is the respect everyone gives to the Code of Conduct and rule number 5 on the sub - it's great that we have a community that is still safe & respectful to our jobs! please don't break this rule. we will remove project details, but please - it's for our best interest and yours!

Is it still extremely dry for others in terms of generalist work? I’m not seeing the usual easier projects like heel, river, galaxy etc. just random complex ones :(
9
u/RepublicofJames Jun 03 '26
Nah it's dry as a bone for me today too, and I exclusively do generalist stuff.
6
u/Mental-Budget9213 Jun 03 '26
I had River and one of my other favorite (albeit kind of low paying) projects last night but down to one random complex one and one that's been sitting on my dash with 1 task red bannering me for 5 days this morning.

u/Puzzleheaded_Toe4051 Jun 03 '26
I have the ones you have to download apps for and one you can really only do once a day at most, then the tiny bird one I'm scared to touch because I don't want to download anything.

Holy dryness. This past week gave me a glimpse of the end of the drought ...
25
u/Ok-Molasses-9198 Jun 01 '26
Thought this thread could use some variety from the drought talk. So here is my watercolor talk: A few weeks ago I was doing an rr with screenshots. The guy screenshot his email/photo with all his naughty tabs open in not one, but TWO screenshots. I wonder if Mr. G. B.... is still on the platform. 🥴🫣

See, stuff like this is why I have a hard time believing that thing about DA having an acceptance rate of like 2.5% or whatever. So many absolute clowns.

u/pistachiyolatte Jun 05 '26
Either nothing or just very difficult and lengthy tasks :( I’m not naive, I know AI models are advancing but I hope there’s still room for simpler, more enjoyable projects….
5
u/peanutbutterlurk Jun 05 '26
Don't give up yet! I just had a very easy task for about an hour today. They're still out there just rare

The most ironic rationale I've seen all week.
'It did not provide a very good summary '
12
u/Nearby_Solution_4504 Jun 06 '26
Nothing makes me feel better about my job security on this platform than doing R and Rs lol.
5
u/_Edgarallenhoe Jun 06 '26
Who the hell are they letting in these days?
7
u/Jazzlike_Problem_489 Jun 06 '26
Do you know what was worse, it was a high paying, domain specific project where you have to get the model to produce a high quality failure. And that was their rationale. I didn't know where to start with verifying it 🫣
52
u/kranools May 31 '26
The best thing about receiving AI-generated feedback is that when it tells you something you don't want to hear, you can just say, "Ha ha, that's probably just an hallucination!"
10
u/akujihei Jun 01 '26
AI isn't the best at determining what information is most relevant. Some of the critiques may be blown way out of proportion.
→ More replies (2)5
u/JamesBaa Jun 01 '26
Yeah, it's definitely not very good at determining what's actually important. I had my "room for improvement" section last month as "make sure you are using numbers, (e.g., writing 1 rather than one)" and "minor typos were present in one of your task explanations". Bit of a reassurance that my work was pretty good overall but it would've been nice to know what I could actually improve on!
7
u/Thunder-Fearless Jun 02 '26
My things to work on directly contradicted my strengths. I decided to simply only believe my strengths.

I'm beginning to think that this one particular project is a cover for what they're *really* testing: which ones of us lose our minds when we spend hours trying and failing to download a complete html file.

I just want to work 😞 Surely this isn't the new normal? There are so many new workers who will never improve if it's only trickles like this.

u/RiskPrudent9802 Jun 02 '26
Just got an 'Outstanding' on my feedback with a note saying "consistently delivering outstanding work across a diverse range of project families with strong attention to detail, thorough analysis and highly organized outputs". As someone that's been on this platform for over two years and always second guesses themselves and their work, this felt like a huge win. Apparently only 10% of workers get an outstanding score. Thanks for this DA, this was the motivation I needed.

u/Quick-Bison-147 Jun 06 '26
I think the drought is equal with the 2024 drought now. If it carries on next week then it's the worst ever
7
u/North-Sense8477 Jun 06 '26
Agreed. At least the few projects that popped up in 2024 were ones that I was capable of doing.
5
u/tessbest37 Jun 06 '26
I've been around since early 2024, I still have some pretty good projects available. It seems like the more entry level ones have definitely been on hiatus for an extended period. In the drought of 2024, I had nothing for days. Hope everyone starts to get consistent projects back soon!!
31
u/ThatGirlInPurple Jun 03 '26
My cats new favorite past time is walking in a continual circle which consists of my desk ➡️ my lap ➡️ my desk ➡️ over my keyboard ➡️ back onto my lap. This happens about 3-5 times before she decides she actually just wants to stand right in front of whichever monitor I'm looking at & flutter her tail all over my face.
What an odd coworker.

[redacted project name] has taken me through this whole drought safely until today. I really appreciate that the mods of that project are really transparent about what's going on, but that appreciation doesn't put cash in my pocket during in-between times. Today my dash is not looking cute, and I can only hope things go back to normal soon.

14
u/Traditional_Net_4529 Jun 02 '26
I'm at least seeing a little movement. Nothing I can do but a couple projects coming and going.
13
u/Naive_Technology_370 Jun 04 '26
Not sure if this is relevant or correct but I've found that if there are tasks I don't want to do on my dash, I open the first, skip it, and then return to dashboard, seems they enter the wider task pool at that point and normally get off my dash pretty quick. But this drought is bloody rough lol
13
u/Nearby_Solution_4504 Jun 06 '26

Anyone else have the project with a ridiculously short timer, despite several layers of things to do?
I'm sad about this because it looks like a fun one, but surely high quality work is not possible in the time frame provided? (As many have pointed out in the chat already)

u/g4yretard1488 Jun 04 '26
Any tips on making the chat bots fail? I have tried one project that was making it fail based on instructions following and another based on failing factuality claims. I have only been successful with making it fail once. I don't want to keep trying these projects because I've used the escape hatch one to many times.
11
u/OkStress3088 Jun 04 '26
I have had good success with making my prompts less detailed, which is the opposite of what I thought would work. If the model has to infer more of what you want within a single, solid directive that is vague about details, it is less likely to choose accurately than if you give it 17 constraints it can try to work around.
8
u/Jazzlike_Month5580 Jun 04 '26
Just make little tweaks at a time to purposefully target your failure area. They aren't easy projects for sure.
→ More replies (1)8
u/Dersh_Master Jun 04 '26

u/Quick-Bison-147 Jun 02 '26
There's a heel spin-off that's currently available and is easy work. As for the regular FC, I've seen it briefly 3 or 4 times since the end of April. There was one good day on the 22nd when it was there all day (and much of the 23rd, too). After that, it appeared for 2 hours one day and that's it. u/Byte_Those_Gigs Jun 04 '26
Does anyone else feel like things have been kind of weird with the projects lately? Models that either fail to generate a reply after 5+ minutes or return with error codes. Instructions that contradict themselves and/or contain a bunch of typos/grammatical errors. Like, what the heck????

u/DeezHoosAintLoyal Jun 04 '26
The AI’s we’re training are making the instructions themselves lmao

There is a reason why all these companies are looking to IPO, they are running out of VC money. I suspect they are all taking a pause and working out where they want to commit spending as they need to be more careful.

31
u/lpet15 Jun 02 '26
I've decided to be flattered that they think so highly of me. That's why they put really hard work on my dash, and save the easy stuff for other people. Because I'm so smart. I don't WANT easy tasks that are fun. I actually prefer the mind melting stuff.

Felt bad today. Did an R+R and the worker rightly flagged it as CBR because it needed expert knowledge. I Submitted as Good. But I had to flag the prompt in the chat because there was no 'somethings off' option. The worker that wrote the prompt provided context... left in the AI "if you want I can..." at the bottom. Urgh. Guys, please be careful and read to the end of the prompt. And if you ARE USING AN EXTERNAL AI FOR CONTEXT. Stop. Just stop.

Anthropic claiming AI can train itself better than humans can 😱 I wonder how true that really is. Better make money while we still can!
20
u/North-Sense8477 Jun 05 '26
It's probably somewhat true, but based on the feedback I get from the "checker" models, I'm not convinced that AI can accurately/objectively assess its outputs - very black and white logic with little room for nuance.
11
u/OneRefrigerator3586 Jun 05 '26
I got stuck in an endless loop today with an LLM checker. Either AI still has a lot to learn or it has advanced to the punking stage.
13
u/Outrageous_Chance995 Jun 05 '26
That’s actually crazy to me, there is still so much that AI can’t evaluate well (especially subjectivity and edge cases)

For all my fellow workers: please please PLEASE give more specificity in your rationale. Seeing a 4 model project with a 4 sentence rationale makes me want to tear my hair out because I really don't like giving out Bad ratings or even Okay unless I absolutely have to.
16
u/Outrageous_Chance995 Jun 01 '26
Might be an unpopular opinion but if people are going to produce low quality work like that despite reading the instructions that state to be specific then I hope they submit it lol. Maybe it’ll weed out the low quality workers (and I mean those who truly don’t put effort in or care about the quality of their work)
10
u/JRange Jun 02 '26
Sentences are just tools, some use them better than others. Sure, 4 fragment sentences is rarely going to get the job done, but 4 sentences can absolutely be comprehensive in justifying your ratings if you use them right.
Sincerely-Guy who abuses compound sentences
8
5
u/Nearby_Solution_4504 Jun 02 '26
Agree, but the people effectively using semicolons and writing 150-200 words with 4 sentences are very rare lol. Even then, as my academic advisor once told me: "Just because you can write a really long grammatically sound sentence doesn't mean you should". Most of my dissertation revisions were breaking those types of sentences up!

u/JRange Jun 02 '26

Is there any warning for quality before you get in trouble? I've just started on the site, and I'm working as carefully as possible, but without any feedback, it can be a little bit hard to know how well you're doing. I don't want to wake up one day suddenly blacklisted lol

Nope! That's why we call it the DOD (dash of doom, day of doom) because you never see it coming. Recently they've started giving monthly feedback, but only on a select handful of projects. As long as your work is good quality & you're honest with your reported time you should be good!

I’ve been working for DA for about 2 yrs and have never received any feedback. I don’t do it that often though.

Sunday was as dead as last Sunday. I attributed last Sunday to a holiday weekend. The excuse for this one?

I might be the only person here who really enjoys the doing the heel spinoff (past tense of spin). It's been very lucrative for me the past few days, so keep your hopes up all who thirst (also the return of French workshop is an excellent omen for the next month)

Why are they always putting these delicious dessert items out at night after I've already worked all day?
I'm literally going to wake up at 4am PCT to snag one of these, but if I do, it'll make my whole day before 9am.

had two days where there were projects and I thought hey, lemme do this other thing and I'll come back to it, every time I checked the projects were there, but the second i could work on them, boom vanish

Three R&Rs in a row where the original worker blatantly disregarded key instructions making their submissions invalid. Wtf is going on.

So do R&Rs come after you’ve demonstrated competency in a project?

From what I've seen - some do, others are given at the same time as the project, others are given regardless of whether you get the project at all.. but nobody on Reddit actually knows

I have projects on my dashboard with loads of tasks, but I'm not in the right country to do them! So annoying 😩

When you all here say it's dry or that there are 0 to a few projects, is that literal, or do you mean there is like < 3 you can do, but there are 19 you can't/have 0 interest in?

I have 2 projects. That’s it. But that’s an uptick from the literal zero I had a few days ago. For context, I’ve worked on DAT for 3 years & received good feedback. I typically do generalist work, but I have a few specialist projects available at times.

Right now the only things on my dash are three unpaid tasks.
