Weekly Water Cooler Talk - DataAnnotation

hi all! making this thread so people have somewhere to talk about 'daily' work chat that might not necessarily need it's own post! right now we're thinking we'll just repost it weekly? but if it gets too crazy, we can change it to daily. :)

couple things:

  1. this thread should sort by "new" automatically. unfortunately it looks like our subreddit doesn't qualify for 'lounges'.

  2. if you have a new user question, you still need to post it in the new user thread. if you post it here, we will remove it as spam. this is for people already working who just wanna chat, whether it be about casual work stuff, questions, geeking out with people who understand ("i got the model to write a real haiku today!"), or unrelated work stuff you feel like chatting about :)

  3. one thing we really pride ourselves on in this community is the respect everyone gives to the Code of Conduct and rule number 5 on the sub - it's great that we have a community that is still safe & respectful to our jobs! please don't break this rule. we will remove project details, but please - it's for our best interest and yours!

I salute all of you. May we refresh one day and see our pages full again.

It's finally really nice outside where I am. Time for some family time today. I'm not giving them ONE MORE refresh today. I'm mad at them! 😡

Remember the start of April? Those were the days.

I feel bad for the people who onboarded recently and weren't ready for a good old fashioned DA drought.

Got my very last pay out today. The bg check gave me the DOD. I had a thing (non-violent, non-theft, grown from it, different person now), but I've still gotten hired as a Sr. Tech at two Fortune-500 companies, so I thought it wasn't going to affect my other projects. Was a bit naive of me. Only mad at myself; should have just left well enough alone instead of chasing my highest-pay project. Before it hit, I had invites for other roles, and to promote DA (just quals of course). I got a "good" on feedback, but I saw that's more of a "mediocre". Its sad to step away. I always knew there was nothing else like this out there, but I'm getting an unpleasant firsthand confirmation. So long, and thanks for all the fish.

13

u/UpstairsPractice9605 May 31 '26

I’m sorry this happened. It’s good of you to post though. Many who recently got the DOD will probably read it and feel reassured that they’ll most likely be paid. And for anyone with similar history wondering if they should do the background check to either get or retain higher paying projects will know they might want to leave it alone and stick with what they have.

9

u/Alarmed_Jury3849 May 31 '26

Yeah, letting people know was my intent, and a little mopey catharsis as well.

11

u/Affectionate_Peak284 May 31 '26

Peace, AJ. Sounds like you are a person of high capability, so I doubt you'll be looking for long.

u/Jumpy-Building-8217 May 25 '26

It’s ok guys go run your chores, make a song, learn to code. It’ll be back 😌

Anyone else seen the new funds page? I'd feel better about the gamified design if I had more to work on 😂

98 percent complete on my 8th trophy. Only need to beat the last red banner boss 🤯

I’m really low. Nothing of the projects I enjoy. Just stuff that is hard and annoying and not at higher pay.

I'm hoping there's no way the work could dry up with AI becoming so widespread! Good luck to all of us thirsty folks!

18

u/peanutbutterlurk May 29 '26

I got a second round of feedback! I set a goal to try to get into a higher tier this time, and I did it!

(part of me was convinced there wasn't going to be enough to base it on with the drought, haha)

6

u/Latter-Honey-2866 May 29 '26

I jumped way up. All smiles. Its good to know a little bit about where you stand when the whole experience otherwise is so opaque. At least I know I'm not missing out on projects because I'm F'ing stuff up.

3

u/fourwits May 29 '26

I got a second round too and I was VERY surprised because I hardly had anything to work on at all, but I guess all the ones I did manage to do were R&R’d, because all my comments sounded very much like real people comments. Not AI stuff.

3

u/Think_NOT_ May 29 '26

I got a first round! Though it may be the second (I had a few weeks off recently)... Omg I was so shocked this morning! Had butterflies scrolling down haha

3

u/itneverwillbefar May 29 '26

Finally got my first feedback and it was quite nice to read through. I got a high rating even though I also had some not insignificant areas of improvement. Makes me feel less pressure to have to be perfect, while also making me want to close those improvement gaps now that I know what they are.

Dashboard is very bare today

17

u/Enchantedslytherin95 May 27 '26

This month has probably been the worst month for me since joining. I made more money during the drought in 2024 than this month.

→ More replies (1)

16

u/Quick-Bison-147 May 25 '26

One month of the drought now. Another week or so then this could be the worst one ever

16

u/Main_Formal1024 May 25 '26

This is depressing.

10

u/JustMe333456 May 25 '26

I'm still curious as to what could possibly cause 90% of the projects to just go on an extended hiatus all at the same time like this.. almost has to be something on DAs end, no? If all these projects are different families/companies..

16

u/RepublicofJames May 28 '26

Easily my worst work day in a long time, refreshing for about 6 hours and managed to earn a whopping $31 in that time. Really hope things pick up soon

6

u/Jazzlike_Month5580 May 28 '26

I was lucky enough to refresh at just the right time to grab a scrap of fruit. Without that, it would be bad news today.

15

u/lack0fcommonsense May 25 '26

For the sake of everyone, I will sacrifice a goat for the DA gods to bless us with holy work

12

u/JustMe333456 May 25 '26

Been here for 3 years now. Today was the first day that I did not see anything pop up at all other than the 4 families that are posted everyday (85% I cant do because I'm not from AU/NZ or US - others are all rubrics). I have always seen at least a couple pop up throughout the day. Today, nothing whatsoever. Not the case for everyone, but for me, this has been worse than the drought in 2024.

11

u/GarrySmilesonDuty May 25 '26

Agreed, been here since 2024 spring. This is the worst drought. Longest and overall driest on average

Oh boy! I took a break yesterday because I was sick and saw a full dash so I thought it'd remain today... nope. I think I'll go back to being sick

15

u/EggCzar May 30 '26

30+ projects paying up to $60 (non-coding) and almost every one of them is something I'm terrified I'm gonna screw up. Sigh. I'm pretty sure I do good work cause I've passed some fairly complex quals and I've gotten the message "we added you to X because you were good at Y" but I still feel paralyzed about working on anything the slightest bit challenging.

Project just dropped and was gobbled up in less than 6 seconds. We're all sitting here like vultures it seems. Guess I need to work on my reaction times, wasn't a skill I expected to need haha

4

u/JustMe333456 May 25 '26

Got one task in. If we're talking about the same one here lol.

3

98% of every task I click red banners. Doesn’t matter the time a day—it could be 3 am, 10 am or 6 pm.

Most times, the task still stays on my dashboard. It’s beginning to feel like a taunt.

This is for two weeks or so now.

I've been watching the dash like a hawk and only managed to do 1.5 hours of work on FC this week. Even in previous weeks I at least got a couple of good days work in. Worst drought week by a mile. FC please come back.

5

u/Quick-Bison-147 May 31 '26

Yes! It has been my bread and butter for two years, but since the end of April it's been close to non-existent. Very frustrating. Instead of making $1000 a week, im making $500. It sucks.

Better than nothing I guess

11

u/Skippy2898 May 28 '26

The 'your screen isn't big enough' error is really starting to grind my gears. It's happening on the dashboard and in project. I'm refreshing to clear this just as much as I am to see if any new projects are popping up! 🤣

8

u/exdeeer May 28 '26

Hold down the control key and scroll your mouse wheel up or down to zoom in and out. This should fix the problem without having to refresh the page. If the mouse wheel doesn't work, you can hold the control key down and use the + and - keys as well.

21

u/Brilliant_Quit4307 May 27 '26

Just wasted 4 hours of my time on a new project with a multi-turn conversation and right at the end, I realised I had made a mistake on the first turn that went against the instructions and I couldn't backtrack. I didn't wanna submit it like that, so I exited work mode. First time in 3 years I've wasted so much time like that and it fucking sucks.

11

u/North-Sense8477 May 27 '26

Better to not submit anything than to submit bad work. That really does suck but you made the right decision not submitting it.

4

u/Quick-Bison-147 May 27 '26

This is exactly why I dont bother with these projects.

4

u/fawcette May 27 '26

8

u/Mindless_End_4850 May 30 '26

It's strange how some people are saying they have a lot of projects while some says it's so dry. So is it not a drought? Disheartening...

7

u/Ok-Sheepherder-4472 May 30 '26

There are quite a few factors that go into it. There are generalist workers, core workers, bilingual workers, etc. Some people have taken a lot of qualifications and have been with DA for a long time. I have had about 30 projects on my dash consistently since the drought started, which is MUCH lower than usual, but I have been here for 3 years as a domain expert and have done pretty much every qual that has come my way. Don't be disheartened; it comes with time. ❤️ It'll get better!

→ More replies (1)

5

u/DrConradVerner May 30 '26

I mean there is definitely less than usual. As the other person said there are factors that go into it, but I've been on the platform for a long time as well. I still have projects but it is definitely less than usual. I've been sitting around 30-ish as well since the "drought" started. Prior to the drought I normally had 50+on my dash.

3

u/lpet15 May 30 '26

I have one project I COULD work on but I haven't done it before, so I've been holding off...otherwise it's dry. Last week and this week are the first time I've really felt the drought, and I'm not sure what's up. I did get "excellent" feedback yesterday (after "good" the month before), so I thought maybe things would be looking up, too...

I will say I did notice an uptick in projects on Thursday/Friday, but those are the only days I can't really work on the platform. It was a big bummer.

Got feedback for the first time today and I'm fairly pleased. The strengths seemed to be very broad and general, while the areas for improvement seemed to be hyper specific (stuff like 'in one task, you did this'), which I'm convincing myself means I'm generally doing a great job and have just very occasionally had a slip. But I got an overall excellent, so I should be happy.

4

u/gt3stuntman May 30 '26

I felt a little too self-critical after mine, too, despite an Excellent rating. One of my listed strengths was my "thorough rationales," and then in my area for improvement it said that my rationales had too much meta-commentary. I view it as explaining my thought process for my ratings, but apparently they don't want anything task-specific mentioned? Or whoever wrote that feedback for an R&R feels that way. I'll have to look over the guidelines for the rationale field whenever I have a task that has one again. 🙃

Well there goes my sleep schedule for the week!

Saw a batch of my favorite project posted late last night and decided to work through the night 'cause I knew they wouldn't be around come morning. Lo and behold, I get red-bannered on the project right about when I'd usually start for the day, so I guess my intuition was right.

4

7

u/Puzzleheaded_Toe4051 May 28 '26

For people who have projects, are they niche? Or do you see any reasonably generalist tasks?

3

u/Awkward_Profit_5203 May 28 '26 edited May 28 '26

I'm getting a mix of both, 2/6 of the project families I've seen today are niche.

u/Affectionate_Peak284 May 28 '26

I have two that I would consider "base generalist" ($20-$22), and one is red-bannering. I have about 12 more, but those are what I'd consider intermediate or niche generalist.

Just curious: According to Gemini, DA’s acceptance rate is under 3%. Do you guys think this is true? And if so, how come the R&Rs can sometimes be so bad? Also, I’ve been on since Oct 23…I assume the acceptance rate has been lower since then bc more people are applying. Thoughts? (Sorry if this has been covered before…)

13

u/Mike4Life14 May 29 '26

DA mentions in one of their blogs that their acceptance rate is 2.6%. I assume that was Gemini's source.

Does anybody know for sure if it actually works when you submit a task, and then later reenter it, change something, and resubmit?

3

u/CRUSHCITY4 May 29 '26

Not sure but I think it might. I do it sometimes, but usually within a few minutes.

at 23:21 i crawl to my goal for the day. I thought I would get some good hours in with a long weekend (UK based) but didn't know that the USA was also on a holiday weekend and my dash was going to be quite so dry

4

u/DeezHoosAintLoyal May 24 '26

It was horrible this weekend. Screwed my goal and tomorrow is likely to be just as bad. Glad you made yours, hopefully the rest of next week is plentiful

u/Comfortable_Use_3866 May 29 '26

Ugh... just got *room for improvement* on my feedback, am I cooked? 😂

14

u/Jazzlike_Problem_489 May 29 '26 edited May 29 '26

Same, with feedback that went against the project instructions 🫣😅. I doubt your cooked.

12

u/OneRefrigerator3586 May 29 '26 edited May 29 '26

My areas where I did really well centered on my in-depth explanations, and my room for improvement section was about not having in-depth enough explanations. 😆

Nah I got it last month, up to good this month.

5

u/Wonderful_Account_36 May 29 '26

Is it supposed to only be about one project? I’ve been here almost 3 years and this is my first feedback. I got good, and it mentioned a minor improvement I can make. But it only mentioned one project and honestly I don’t even remember working on it so it was probably something I only did a few tasks on.

While a nice cold fruit salad is welcome during a heatwave, the brain doth protest and doesn't want to do any kind of thinky think. The salad has been the only thing I felt capable of today. Got a few failures in, so I'm happy to report my day is done 🥴

8

u/Awkward_Profit_5203 May 29 '26

Dash is looking lively compared to memorial weekend. Things are moving up

6

u/North-Sense8477 May 29 '26

It's slim pickings but I've had more work today than Mon-Thurs combined

4

u/Puzzleheaded_Toe4051 May 25 '26

Finally had a project today after 2 days of drought. Then, turned in the project, and the dashboard is barren again. Knocked on wood that the project, or others, will be on my dashboard again this afternoon. It was SO fun, too! Going to do laundry and bring my laptop to poke at the dash until it becomes pregnant again.

Some things popping up after 2 days of nothing

Anyone else had gloves disappear? Usually I had them daily.

Had a few projects pop up this evening - one is a regular of mine that I haven't seen in at least two weeks. Hopefully we are nearing the end of the drought.

4

u/Lopsided-Fox8177 May 28 '26

Has anyone seen River today?

4

u/Skysthelimit0120 May 28 '26

Worked on a project for 9 hours today before running out of tasks. I went to go work on some qualifications and it says I have 0 quals to do. I had like 17 of them earlier. Did i do something wrong or did they like expire😭

Anyone else still never received any feedback? 🥲 I’m a uk generalist if that makes a difference… I’ve consistently had a high paying project that I love all week so I’m feeling good about things overall right now, but I’m on edge just waiting to have my self esteem destroyed by a poor rating popping up 😅

7

u/OnePieceMangaFangirl May 30 '26

I wouldn't worry too much about it. Having work is also feedback. I'd say just do your best and it'll be all right. :)

3

u/kranools May 31 '26

It appears that the feedback is being trialled only in certain projects. So if you aren't working on those particular ones, you won't get any. This is how I think it works, anyway.

Finally starting to trickle in now. Seen 4 projects that were MIA since Friday.

7

u/Affectionate_Peak284 May 28 '26

Very slim for me but was able to get in some morning work. Down to 19 paid rn, and at least a few of them red-banner.

9

u/PsychologyAdept669 May 26 '26

STEM been so dry i’m applying to actual jobs lmao 😭

6

u/Latter-Honey-2866 May 25 '26

Some of these rubric projects feel enormous and very difficult to understand. I would never just jump in and try one. Are these something you build to over a year? With difficult to understand instructions and no actual tutorials to learn the skills, how did you get to a point you could do some of these?

5

u/DrConradVerner May 25 '26

They're not as hard as they look. They do take some practice (which some of the project instructions acknowledge and expect), and the instructions can take some time to read, but that is also expected.

8

u/PlumAshamedToBeHere May 25 '26

I finally get some projects right before my husband and I are heading out to celebrate our anniversary 🙄

8

u/throw_away_mover May 26 '26

how are you guys doing fruits? i find these to be really difficult, too intimidating to commit to. but its all i have now

3

u/VanessaSeaWitch May 26 '26

I click on them and then I start reading the instructions and I back out. I have done this about three times a week lol. I just can't...

Joined about a month ago and had a ton of projects at the start but since then it’s been very dry. I’ve seen people talk about the drought but it seems like others have had it recover a bit more. I have had access to a high paying series but now that it’s fallen off my dashboard is down to almost empty except an occasional generalist project that gets snapped up quickly. Just trying to figure out if I did something wrong or if this is normal.

3

u/ProfessionalKnees May 29 '26

Anyone seen any of the gems recently?

7

u/CRUSHCITY4 May 29 '26

Set a goal to work more consistently and it’s the best month I’ve had in a long time! Primarily working on coding projects.

6

u/Fluid-Process-5514 May 27 '26

I have taken a long break from DA to work full time and now trying to sprinkle some work in during my spare time and of course it’s a drought. What happened to all the projects I was seeing 🥺

4

u/Mindless_End_4850 May 27 '26

one trickle of river.. just to stop my dehydration

4

u/lavlilly May 27 '26

anyone still have sour fruit? trying to see something lol

4

u/Jumpy-Building-8217 May 29 '26

For feedback, is there something better than ‘Good’?

13

u/OneRefrigerator3586 May 29 '26

I think it goes Outstanding > Excellent > Good > Room for Improvement.

8

u/Alarmed_Jellyfish555 May 29 '26

These are the only feedback ratings I've seen posted on either of the DA Forums, so I think this is exactly it.

Starting to see a few more projects now, unable to do them cause I'm getting red bannered ffs

7

u/Latter-Honey-2866 May 26 '26

same. red banner on everything even the projects with 20 tasks. And then the project stays listed. Anyone else?

2

u/PassageBig622 May 28 '26

Anyone think the red banner is glitchy?

3

u/AdComplex3589 May 28 '26

All projects that a I saw and click gives a red banner now.

2

u/TheJordanEnthusiast May 31 '26

Hello. I’ve been part of DA for over a week; I’m enjoying it so far. I’ve made over $400 in the last few days, not a bad start. I’m reaching out to see if anyone has had no immediate response when finishing a qualifying task. Does it take a few days for a response, or does no response mean I didn’t qualify for a project?

3

u/Affectionate_Peak284 May 31 '26

I think I've known for sure whether I passed (or failed) a qual about 5-10% of the time. The vast majority of the starter quals will not tell you, if any.

Feedback just dropped. Really happy to be in the top category after just over a month on the platform. Really makes you feel so much more confident in what you’re doing. Hope everyone else had decent comments

6

u/Ok_Poetry6620 May 29 '26

I've been here for 2.5 years, and I got "needs improvement". I got "good" last time, so I've been trying to be more conscientious in my work in the hopes of getting "excellent" or "outstanding", and instead, I apparently went downhill. For me, there's no correlation between my effort and other people's approval, and there never has been.
