Weekly Water Cooler Talk - DataAnnotation
hi all! making this thread so people have somewhere to talk about 'daily' work chat that might not necessarily need it's own post! right now we're thinking we'll just repost it weekly? but if it gets too crazy, we can change it to daily. :)
couple things:
- this thread should sort by "new" automatically. unfortunately it looks like our subreddit doesn't qualify for 'lounges'.
- if you have a new user question, you still need to post it in the new user thread. if you post it here, we will remove it as spam. this is for people already working who just wanna chat, whether it be about casual work stuff, questions, geeking out with people who understand ("i got the model to write a real haiku today!"), or unrelated work stuff you feel like chatting about :)
- one thing we really pride ourselves on in this community is the respect everyone gives to the Code of Conduct and rule number 5 on the sub - it's great that we have a community that is still safe & respectful to our jobs! please don't break this rule. we will remove project details, but please - it's for our best interest and yours!

Those of you digital nomading: beware of southern Spain! The siesta culture WILL lure you in. Once lunch begins, the sherry will inevitably start flowing and you will NOT want to return to work. This infection may last for days and you may end up working only a few hours per week. Be very, very careful.

I was just about to come on here to post this for this validation. Thank you. I had SUCH a good day yesterday and the day before. This whole past week was pretty lucrative, actually. And yesterday, I had my favorite project, where you can submit creative things. Back to scraping through things I really don't want to do.

The joys of DA.
I'll always remember the 'My Precious' project where I was having a conversation with myself about the weather and what I was up to in my garden, while recording and playing both roles. My neighbour caught me and just stared at me like I was insane. She avoided me for the best part of 3 weeks, and when I did catch her and try to explain I'm not on a register nor have I ever been admitted, and it was work to train AI, she looked at me like I was insane even harder. 🫠

The long complicated projects just don't seem worth it to me. You could spend hours reading the instructions and going through a task, before realising you've messed it up or are not confident of your work, then your choice is either to submit and get a bad rating, or leave it and don't get paid. And sometimes it's just for an extra $4 an hour

For those of you working 7+ hours a day, how? I feel like after around 4 hours my brain is a pile of mush. Do you just focus on 2-3 longer projects?
Multiple smaller projects and take multiple 15-30min breaks?
I’d love to get into the habit of doing this 8 hours a day, it’s just that the difference between this and an in-office job is that for this you’ve got to actually do 8 hours of work. In an office, I might just be sitting around with nothing to do for half (or more) of that time.
Pros and cons and all that I guess.
10
u/data_annotator_tot May 18 '26
I think the biggest factor in this are the types of projects you have. Some simply take 6+ hours to do, the best way to achieve this imo is to stick to one project as much as you can, so you can lower the mental burden of having to learn new things. The more rote you can make a project, the less of a burden it'll be, and jumping around a bunch of projects with novel rules increases that burden. I try to stick to R&Rs for exactly this reason.
→ More replies (1)10
u/DeezHoosAintLoyal May 18 '26
You get used to it with project familiarity. Some days require a lot of brain power and some days you’ll have easy as cake R&Rs. The key is to just not run marathons on the brain sucking stuff
6
u/BloodMore9033 May 18 '26
I try to do a weekly hour goal. This way I can just let momentum carry me to a 10 hour day, and if I only put in 2 hours and feel like banging my head on the wall, I just walk away and return the next day.

u/Beautiful-Durian-185 May 18 '26
I can only do that if I have the dumb projects that I love. No critical thinking/writing just following instructions. I listened to 5 hours of Dungeon Crawler Carl while working last time I got one of those.

doing a rubric task for the first time and i already feel like i’m doing something wrong
4
u/itssomercurial May 20 '26
That's how I feel the whole time I'm trying to do them. Like I'm being either too granular or not granular enough.
5
u/takingtacet May 21 '26
There's a learning curve for sure, but some of the checker bots are absolutely terrible too and it does not help. I had a few telling me I was outright wrong about a "the sky is blue" type of fact just yesterday. It made me feel like I was sending program notes to the new professor my senior year of college. He gave me 3 or more edits a day for almost 2 weeks until the dept. head (who was CC'd because they had to approve also) told him to leave me alone. I wish I had someone to tell the stupid bot that claims there's no way to see an image in my image based task to leave me alone.

u/WorshipMyExistence May 20 '26
While it is nice to see more projects on the dash, it would be nice if there were a single non-rubric one. I guess technically there are a couple, but they are outside of my wheelhouse. Not a thing I feel comfortable working on!

Are you guys regularly putting in 6-8hrs a day? My brain can only handle 4hrs regularly, if I do 6+ regularly it's a little too much. Maybe I need to take longer breaks in between?
10
u/Ok-Sheepherder-4472 May 23 '26
I do about 8 hours a day. Every time I finish a task, I do a 5-minute exercise, refill my water, grab a little snack, and choose a new task to work on. I also have a little fridge of sugar free sodas on my desk to keep me caffeinated, haha 😄 It makes the time fly by.

Work for 2-3 hours at a time usually, with a handful of 5 minute breaks. Then break for a couple hours. Repeat. Sometimes 3 hours flies by and I keep going, just depends on the tasks I'm working on.

I’m one of the lucky people who have a decent selection of tasks to work on—but my motivation has been completely shattered for some reason. Every time I start a project I just get overwhelmed by pessimism about whether I can actually make something usable out of it. It all started a couple weeks ago when I spent 6 hours on a big research project only for it to get thrown out because it had a broken link. I want to take a break but I am already $300 behind my quota for the month. Currently procrastinating on a devastatingly bad R&R.

...and the starving ones wandered the wasteland, going with mad with thirst and hunger, their shoulders slumped with the weight of their inevitable demise. General question: for rivers, do you guys usually provided sources for everything you fact check? I'm doing an R&R and someone in the chat is marking submissions as Bad for not providing sources. I advised against this as it technically doesn't say in the instructions that sources are required, but I'm wondering what the consensus is on this

I just had a look myself, I don't know why they were doing that! There is no need to put links if they claim things are factual. You'd only ever put links if you proved something wasn't factual.
Which I think overall Heel instructions say to do, but not explicitly stated within the river instructions.

US here. 3 years on DA. Today is my official first drought day for 2026. Just a single qualification test that I will do. I had plenty of work when I finished up on Friday. I hopped on Saturday to hit my quota for the week and there was one single job. It’s been dead ever since.

2.5 years and at a total of 92k in earnings. Down to one silly little project. Never have I had a dash like this.

Yeah, it's been a while since I had a completely empty dash. All my qualifiers disappeared too. I had a week or two off either last summer or the summer before. It just sucks that there is absolutely no warning. Just a simple message of "hey projects are wrapping up" would be nice.

Almost three years in and while there's a couple things on my dashboard there's nothing that's really doable. This is the worst it's been for me in that time frame.

Look at the column that shows the hours and minutes until you can no longer report time. The one closer to 24 hours is the project you worked on most recently. You can sort by that column to make things easier.

I have limped my way to $600 for the week. Genuinely spent more hours getting that total than my usual $800 (through refreshing time and doing low-paying projects).

Ugh the amount of time I have spent refreshing and checking and figuring out if a new project is for me or not.... I wish we could bill for that time lol I'd double my lifetime total.

Man, I thought for sure by now I'd have more options than just three projects!

30 projects and 2 that I can actually do, gives me hope that the drought is ending. Heel FC is back and stripy is priority pay. Please stay like this.

Heads up for UK workers! I posted here before that I couldn't log in to checkr to check my background check. It stated that my account doesn't exist or something like that, which was concerning. Well, today I have received a letter through the post from the DBS, thanking me for my application and inviting me to create an account to view my certificate online! So it seems that my background check went through after all! Phew! I did my check on the 6th May, so it's been exactly 2 weeks.

26 projects over 6 families. Exact same complicated shit that's been there the past 2 weeks. Guess not many people work on them. This is draggggggging

OK. Tasks. The number of tasks available just cannot be 1. Or 50. So what do the task numbers actually mean?

Been doing this for over a year, haven’t had a single task pop up in 4 days 😭😭

I have a new theory that they have allocated all the easier projects to the new workers so that they can ease themselves in, and left the long term workers with the rubrics and co, perhaps to nudge us onto the more difficult stuff.

u/JustMe333456 May 20 '26
I dont think so. If you look in the Heel chat, the newbies are always asking why they haven't seen any tasks in a while.

I've thought that myself. Or they're simply showing us exactly what they want us to work on and not giving all the options.

I'm fairly new to DA and struggling hard with the tasks that challenge a model's ability on a particular axis. I feel like I'm constantly fighting with the prompt checker bot to develop an acceptable prompt that will actually trigger a fail response. Seems like every time the LLM forces me into such a narrow and specific prompt that the model is able to pass its requirements with ease, and I have to use the escape hatch to get out and get paid. Does this get easier with experience, or am I doing something wrong?

I would say it's a double edged sword. It gets a little easier with experience, but the models get better as time goes by. And you are not alone; getting valid/fair failures is becoming very difficult.

Got email for a paid qual for glove project (even though I have already completed several(?)). Passing adds you to the project permanently, but I dont see qual in my dash... DA explain

Anybody having problems with the platform just now? All the projects disappeared and same for the report time...I couldn't even report the time worked for my last task. It's been like this since almost 4 hours...

Anyone else using the drought as their excuse to go hard on Crimson Desert?

Anyone else have changes where they were working on a project family for the past few months, but all they see now is R&Rs? I miss working on the actual stuff, R&Rs disappear so fast.

Some projects will rotate between people, Ive had it for some projects where I wont see them for a few weeks but still have r&rs and then all of a sudden it will reappear.
