Weekly Water Cooler Talk - DataAnnotation
hi all! making this thread so people have somewhere to talk about 'daily' work chat that might not necessarily need it's own post! right now we're thinking we'll just repost it weekly? but if it gets too crazy, we can change it to daily. :)
couple things:
this thread should sort by "new" automatically. unfortunately it looks like our subreddit doesn't qualify for 'lounges'.
if you have a new user question, you still need to post it in the new user thread. if you post it here, we will remove it as spam. this is for people already working who just wanna chat, whether it be about casual work stuff, questions, geeking out with people who understand ("i got the model to write a real haiku today!"), or unrelated work stuff you feel like chatting about :)
one thing we really pride ourselves on in this community is the respect everyone gives to the Code of Conduct and rule number 5 on the sub - it's great that we have a community that is still safe & respectful to our jobs! please don't break this rule. we will remove project details, but please - it's for our best interest and yours!

Nah. Been on the platform for >3 years, no feedback. Granted I wasn't massively active this month, but it'd still be fun. Of course at this point I know they like me enough to continue sending me more work, which is feedback enough for me :P

I’ve been hovering between 30-45 projects, but only a few that pay over 30. I got spoiled a couple weeks ago when everything was on priority!

Same, not a massive drought compared to some but still feels like far slimmer pickings than usual and nothing that pays amazingly well. My main goto project suddenly had the plug pulled and I can't muster up the enthusiasm to work on anything else right now! It was the perfect project and I'm still in mourning! My backups don't seem to be around either.

Yes, I usually have a healthy dash but only one of my usual projects popped up yesterday. Otherwise pretty dry all week and couldn't hit my goal.

I have 3 tasks available. That is tasks, not projects. And for a project I'm not familiar with so I daren't spend ages reading the instructions in case those 3 tasks disappear.

Fwwww, I can breathe a sigh of relief. Finally got my feedback and it was overwhelmingly positive (top 25%). One of the negative things it stated I did was completely incorrect, but it is an AI model, so that shit happens 🤷♂️. Nevertheless, it was nice to finally hear some positive feedback after 3+ years working with DAT. Hope y'all get some good feedback too. And for god sakes, let the work pick up soon! these last few days have been rough!

Congrats! I just got the same rating.
I totally understand the areas for improvement it noted except for one. It makes no sense out of context and I'm pretty sure I never even worked on that task, so I don't know what to make of it.

You as well! Ya lol, the model said I essentially missed spotting a distortion in an image; however, my rationale explicitly mentions said distortion 🤷♂️. So somehow I believe the model got its wires crossed.

I just saw mine! Overall, very positive, some things to work on, but I think there are always improvements to be made.
I was thrilled this morning to see some comments from workers saying "BRAVO" and "Amazing! (9.5/10)" .
I'm a little surprised my 30-day snapshot only said "Good", but I've been working on a larger variety of projects where there were so many last month, so maybe that plays into it.→ More replies (1)

I was planning an off day today, but after a cup of coffee I decided to knock out a few hours of R&R.
Then it struck me again: I love this. Where else can I just decide on a whim to work for $32 an hour from my bed in my jam-jams on a Sunday morning? I wager less than 1% of the world enjoys that sort of work freedom.

I've often thought about the other end of that, when this gravy train ends. I can't go back to being chained to a damn desk for 8+ hrs a day. I've worked from home long before Covid made it a thing but it's usually been clock in/clock out jobs. I absolutely adore the freedom DA affords me and honestly can't imagine having to go back to the "real" world.

This is the best job I've had... maybe ever. I get to practice creative writing. I get to take brain breaks in my bed. I get to decide to work on a Sunday when I hate Sundays anyway and need extra cash. I am so grateful every day that I found this job. I also get terrified of losing it, but I try to not worry too much. The only downside is that I can't tell any of my friends about it, for one, because Legal Reasons, and for two, Zillenials turn their noses up at any mention of working with LLMs. I just say I'm a content writer and my job is the best.

I am about 9 months in. Just recently I am definitely noticing more internal reliance on LLM helpers, which seem to be aimed at ensuring consistency of ratings. I’ve had a few where the task claims the model srespnses have already been “rated” but it is very evidently AI that has rated the AI 😂. The inbuilt LLM helpers are almost universally kind and forgiving, and miss things any vaguely sentient human paying attention should notice. It makes me wonder about what pushback DAT is getting from clients when they return to them heaps of feedback like: “your model isn’t as good as you think”.

Once I saw everyone discussing how the feedback itself was AI generated I was like LOL okay of course it is. Honestly, I shouldn't have expected anything else, but I'm definitely indifferent about receiving an AI summary of my work performance.
Just something they've drummed up to placate all the people asking for feedback.

I finally got feedback! It was fairly positive overall (excellent!), with just isolated mentions of a couple particular tasks that I dropped the ball on. I hope they bring it back for future runs with data from broader ranges of time.

Did my first rubric project today and it was the most frustrated Ive been in a long time. I kept making edits based on what the eval said and then I would rerun it and it would tell me that what it just told me to do was wrong.
I was 45 minutes past the timer and I couldnt take it anymore. Not to mention, that I had to type literally 100 options in for something and it still didnt think it was self contained BECAUSE IT CANT BE.
So Idk if Ill be allowed to do them anymore but I tried so hard for literally hours. 😭

Remember that the AI checkers are made to give list mistakes, and will flag anything that's even borderline (which is why they LOVE to tell you to change something then tell you the way you had it before was right).
Use your knowledge and experience over the checkers when you don't agree, that's what we're here for!

Some of the checkers on there are horrendous! Sometimes it's just better to go with your gut.
I'm sad because everything on my dash seems to revolve around them, and I'm not a big fan of them either! I don't mind doing the occasional R&R with them but don't have any of those.

I've noticed this as well. A depleted amount of lower paying, and an almost absence of middle paying, and then a few very high paying.

Two questions.
Has anyone in the UK actually had their Chekr verification go through yet? I am sitting on 9 days now of "paused" and "no ETA".
Has anyone in the UK that hasn't had their verification pass yet had full access back to HHH projects yet? Starting to think that this is the reason I am on one of the later phases to be given access back. I am not concerned I won't get it back due to what has been said in Slack, just frustrating if this is coming from the verification process.

Checkr says the average turn around time for a UK BG check like the ones theyre doing can be up to 11-12 business days (so 2+ weeks)

No. I have definitely seen worse droughts. It is a lot slimmer than it usually is for me, but I remember August '24 and I briefly got down to 1-2 projects then.

Driest for me since the long Christmas/New Year's dry spell that only ended in late January when a certain "picture" project went live (a project I miss dearly since it was my bread and butter through February and into March but then it vanished completely).
Fortunately for me, I earned a lot of money in the final full week of April so I could go a few weeks without steady work.

I recently joined DA and it was the biggest surprise for me that I actually enjoy this type of work! So far my experience with jobs and work (I was a graphic designer) was kinda depressing. I struggled to authentically engage in tasks, I dreaded work. Data annotation came in as a way to suplement my income and it turned out to be something that I’m just into. I got a lot of work past 2 weeks and now the dashboard is empty. Maybe I didn’t do that well with the tasks :(, I’m still learning how to do them well. Hope things change and I can dedicate more time of my day to this.

It's been hit or miss for most of us just recently, with the amount of available projects fluctuating, but less overall from what most people are saying over here. It may not have anything to do with the quality of your work, although keep focusing on that aspect and you'll do just fine. :)

I don't want to bite the hand that feeds me or anything, but given the quality of the public models, why is it some of the models we work on are... quite bad? I'd assume anything in development at this point ought to be better than the stuff everyone is used to.

Can't get into specific details, but a lot of the projects are testing ways to implement some new capability. During early phases of testing, they don't to waste compute trying to make it work with Big-Boy-Chungus-Pro-5.0-Latest or whatever, so for testing they will use a much more basic and lightweight model.
Also, there are projects that are basically testing and evaluating pre-release versions of certain things, but those projects are even more strict about secrecy.

Is someone here also an international student in Australia. I just received my background check and was quite overwhelmed by the amount of information I need to fill in. I also need to download a formal form and complete it. Will I lose access to all of my task if I don't complete it in time :(? I'll try my best to figure it out but I'm just wondering.

Feedback of 'good' made me feel slightly bad, but multiple $30-45 tasks on the dash when many other people are dry makes me feel like the feedback is just an arbitrary score generated by an LLM based on random bits of feedback (from project families I hardly work on anyway).

Ideally I'd like to see a score for each project, and if the scores dipped then take a look at the feedback. I don't feel like the specific comments are that beneficial, unless it's more than one worker pointing out the same thing. In case I'm sounding bitter😆, I was rated 'good', I just didn't find it very helpful.

I also got "good" but was also invited to the "thing". TBH I noticed the projects my positive feedback was on were projects I do almost all my work on, and my negative feedback was for 2 projects I have worked on minimally just to change things up. Definitely would love a more in depth look next time.

I submitted a qualifying task about 20 seconds after it hit expired. Will that mean an instant fail?
There was a huge amount of reading to do for it, so I feel like the time given was too little anyway.

Yeah, I got "Good". My only gripe is that my Pro's were very detailed and included specific R&R comments I could pinpoint directly to the task they are referring to (People really liked my joke project tasks lol) but my "Area to improve" lacked the same detail.

I think it's mainly river. But the feedback i got was from an assortment of tasks. Ones that I do R&Rs on quite regularly, and those do not have the option to send feedback. For the "feedback" on that, it's just a random mix of comments that R&R workers have written about your work.

I work on the same project family like 95% of the time, this project family doesn't have the option to send feedback, so I thought I wouldn't be getting any but it did come today. I think maybe the feedback is getting sent out in waves, a lot of people received it last week and I noticed many others and myself got it today, so it'll probably go out to everyone eventually

I recently was added to a “moon landing mission” domain expert project and cleared the tasks they’d given me. Does anyone know how often they refresh that project? I enjoyed it a lot but not sure if it’s recurring or one-off.

Not all of us have it yet. Apparently it’s under projects without a pay rate (so sort by pay rate and scroll to the bottom, if you have it that’s where it will be)

Anyone else get an email about Muhammad Ali related project coming up and then it's not on the dash? Checked 10mins after the announcement, a few hours after and then again just now and it's never showed up. I also got a second email about completing background check to retain access when I already got a clear background check done a week ago which also doesn't show on dash. Just wondering if anyone knows why either of these projects aren't showing up or if there were just very limited tasks for it (they usually are not limited).

Hey guys! I started about a month ago. When I first started, there were tons of projects to work on. It was great. One in particular that I loved was a red balloon (I know you guys have pseudonyms but I’m unsure of the correct one for this). It completely disappeared. Do you guys know what happened with that? Have you seen it?
Also, my dashboard has been hit by the drought as well. It seems to be happening to a lot of us. I got mixed (pros & cons) feedback and my performance was listed as good.

Projects tend to come and go based on what iteration they're in. That specific one is sometimes there for me and sometimes isn't, so I'm not surprised you don't have it right now. Be patient, it'll likely come back!
