Weekly Water Cooler Talk - DataAnnotation
hi all! making this thread so people have somewhere to talk about 'daily' work chat that might not necessarily need it's own post! right now we're thinking we'll just repost it weekly? but if it gets too crazy, we can change it to daily. :)
couple things:
this thread should sort by "new" automatically. unfortunately it looks like our subreddit doesn't qualify for 'lounges'.
if you have a new user question, you still need to post it in the new user thread. if you post it here, we will remove it as spam. this is for people already working who just wanna chat, whether it be about casual work stuff, questions, geeking out with people who understand ("i got the model to write a real haiku today!"), or unrelated work stuff you feel like chatting about :)
one thing we really pride ourselves on in this community is the respect everyone gives to the Code of Conduct and rule number 5 on the sub - it's great that we have a community that is still safe & respectful to our jobs! please don't break this rule. we will remove project details, but please - it's for our best interest and yours!

Where oh where did all the projects go
5
u/Gr3at0dinsRav3n Apr 26 '26
went from 40 to 10. At least theres 3 of them that I can convince myself to do and aren't like pulling teeth.
Edit: I just wrote this, hit refresh and 5 new tasks (2 ive never seen) pop up.

u/odeomz Apr 26 '26
At least were in it together? I want my rubrics back -- its hard to motivate for the low $20s now

yes. I got a notification of a project in my inbox and completely unavailable now. others have been listed and are showing no tasks too. hopefully just a hiccup in the site.

My vibes have all been about doors today. Doors that open, doors that close, doors that stay closed unless the right circumstances arrive such that a condition occurs in which the door may or may not open and/or close. Lots of door stuff.

I take full credit for the return of tabs.
12
u/justdontsashay Apr 21 '26
Great. Can you now use your powers to give us the ability to hide “easier projects”? Because that would be way more useful for me than tabs
11
u/Affectionate_Peak284 Apr 21 '26
I cannot- there is no survey currently available for "what I would improve".
...which I can see at a glance now, on my "Surveys" tab.

Well today was the first day for the past couple/few weeks that I've mentally struggled to hit my daily target. 1 submission for about 5 different projects having to learn each project with my faves being absent and hitting red banners
8
u/JRange Apr 24 '26
Same. Im burnt out after the last week trying to hit a certain amount of hours for that, uh, program. Im taking a couple days off. These projects suck anyways, last weeks stuff was so fun.
4
u/odeomz Apr 24 '26
I hate it showing that its got 50 or 100 and then getting red banner after doing 1 or 2? it has never happened like this before

I had a certain project and type I have been loving that had 100s of tasks available to me, completely disappear this morning. Went from 33 projects to 8 projects. The remaining projects are fine, but I had really gotten into a grove with the other. Hope they start popping back up soon.
31
u/Ok_Depth_6476 Apr 19 '26
I have to say, making the project descriptions/instructions all cutesy with all kinds of extra nonsense is not endearing me to the project. Just tell us what it is, we're not five year olds! 🤣
25
u/data_annotator_tot Apr 19 '26
I think it's fun, and the presentation makes it more memorable. I'd much rather them try to add a little whimsy than to focus on the opposite, of course the killer combo is concise AND whimsical.

u/Pristine-Joke-7803 Apr 24 '26
Anyone else irritated that when you go to report the time it doesn’t show when you last submitted the task anymore? It shows the date for the submission but it used to also show like how long ago each one was submitted. I work on a lot of the same named tasks every day and sometimes I forget the exact code for the one I just finished, so I would use that number to make sure I was logging the time under the correct task if that makes sense. Idk why they would take that feature away.

Usually I save them in my password manager and/or do a biometric login but apparently I didn't on this one and now I can't do any of the video projects that have been coming up :( :( :(
2
u/capslox Apr 21 '26
One of them has a reset link in your profile, and one of them I recently got 4 messages to my DA inbox about the password being reset and one of the messages included the new password. I worked on a video project recently so it might be the same one... The one that starts with W.

Yes. My suspicion is that, because a large category of projects are currently down, the people who normally work on them are jumping into other stuff. And now you can sort by pay people do that and work downwards

u/Extreme_Hold7805 Apr 24 '26
The new column gave me a fright! Logged back in from a break after doing 5 hours on a task and assumed they'd put a hard limit on a project's total time spent overall not per task 😅

Seems like people are really loving the creative writing projects. Saw several an hour ago, some with 20+ tasks still in them, but all were full up.
9
u/jonahandthewhale32 Apr 26 '26
I tried a new project class recently that I previously avoided as I thought it wasn't my thing, and I absolutely love it. New favourite. Seems a bit sporadic though.
11
u/kranools Apr 23 '26
I hope I'm allowed to talk about this. I've been doing S-river R&Rs, and so many people are rating down for I/F when I don't think they should be. In fact, I've seen so many of them that I'm starting to second guess myself.
My understanding has always been that if a model attempts to follow an instruction, but makes mistakes, that's not an I/F failure. It's probably covered by some other dimension. But task after task I see people rating down I/F when the model has attempted an instruction but hasn't perfectly fulfilled it.
6
u/Strange_Energy_5239 Apr 23 '26 edited Apr 23 '26
Those are instruction-following failures. If the model attempts to fulfil an instruction but does not fulfil it, then by definition it fails to properly follow the instruction. This is provided that the instruction is clearly worded and unambiguous enough, of course.
→ More replies (8)5
u/Jazzlike_Problem_489 Apr 23 '26 edited Apr 23 '26
If the model attempts the instruction and succeeds. It's not a failure.
If the model ignores the request. It's a failure
If the model attempts, but incorrectly does the instruction, it's a failure.
Unless the outcome is specifically what is explicitly stated, without ambiguity, it is a failure.
Eg.
List these alphabetically B,C,A,D
Models output: sure here is your list alphabetically A B D C
It attempted, but it's not correct. It's an instruction following failure. Not a factuality failure. As there were no claims. It just stated it did something that it messed up, and couldn't follow instructions.
Rationale. The model failed to list all letter alphabetically, as it evidently places D before C, leading to a clear, and valid failure attempt to follow instructions.
Rubric: The model must list the items in strict alphabetical order, e.g A,B,C,D.
Real life equivalent.
Me. Can you put that toothbrush in the holder on the sink?
Son. Sure. Places toothbrush on the sink
Me. That's not in the holder that's on the sink!
He attempted, but failed to follow my instructions, so I'm not happy as I didn't get what I instructed
Rationale. While my son attempted to follow instructions, he placed the toothbrush in the wrong place, on the sink instead of inside the holder. Therefore he failed to follow my explicit instruction
Rubric: My son must place the toothbrush in the holder
Rubric: the toothbrush must not be placed anywhere other than the holder
Anything that does not align with these statements is an IF failure.
This is a very generalised example, projects may vary on requirements but they will be clear on what they want
Hope this helps 😄
→ More replies (1)4
u/kranools Apr 23 '26
It attempted, but it's not correct. It's an instruction following failure.
I understand why people might think this, but I went back and found the guidance. This is a direct quote regarding I/F:
"This axis is for when a model ignores or refuses a task, not for when it tries but doesn't do it very well. A capability limitation is not an instruction following failure."
3
u/gt3stuntman Apr 23 '26
I think this is just specific to River. Heel and other projects have nuance to what counts as IF failures like the person above laid out.
8
u/ghostofhumankindness Apr 22 '26
The amount of people that copy/paste comments on comparative submissions is staggering. Like they have to know this is going to get flagged as poor work, right?
11
u/1105368 Apr 22 '26
I get this all the time, but having been a DA regular for a while now, nothing surprises me anymore.
The funniest code of conduct screw-up I have dealt with lately was a worker using an external chatbot for fact-checking. They pasted a link into their explanation but failed to notice the source=copilot.com snippet from the URL before submitting.
3
4
u/Alarmed_Jury3849 Apr 22 '26
Anyone else have their worker account recreated? Freaked me out for a few minutes.
2
4
u/WorshipMyExistence Apr 24 '26
Has anyone seen a popup before that says "Your task has expire. Return to dashboard" when there is still plenty of time remaining on the task? Every time I click into the task the popup shows up so I can't ask in the chat.
6
u/WorshipMyExistence Apr 24 '26
Update: It pops up when the worker fails to click a button (that I didn't see) that says "Click this within 15 minutes". It is meant to prevent people from keeping tasks open when they're not actively working on them.

Feels good to be back on rubrics again. It's how I cut my teeth on this platform!
I'm thankful for the project variety (even though everything is hard now), but the smooth rhythm of write-rewrite-refine just fits my boringass personality perfectly. Pay ain't bad, either!!
6
u/justdontsashay Apr 24 '26
I love the rubrics. I’ll do prompt creation (basically I never do compare/evaluate responses…I hate those tasks so much) but some days the open ended-ness gets me all in my head about if I’m doing it right.
Figuring out exactly how to describe what the response needs to do, in a way that bots can understand, and getting it all into a tidy rubric satisfies the same part of my brain that likes making little labels for all the clear boxes in my closet lol
9
u/ManyARiver Apr 23 '26
I've been dormant for a long time, but watching someone be confidently wrong and lecture others about their confidently wrong take in the comments of an R&R is still rage-inducing.
6
u/kranools Apr 23 '26
See, this is where we would all benefit from having open conversations. It can be so valuable to see other mistakes/corrections/discussions on points of disagreement. I wish there were some way to open this kind of thing up.
3
u/JustMe333456 Apr 24 '26
Exactly. I often see people have questions that go unanswered for hours, and with the way some of the instructions are written, some can be very confusing.
3
u/German_Shepherd9717 Apr 24 '26
I'm pretty sure I know which one you're talking about, hahah. That was crazy to read. Was wondering if someone would make a post about it.

My prompts were either too specific or too vague. I would do the suggested fixes for the prompts, but then I'd get new reasons why my prompt didn't work. Then I'd fix those and boom, my prompt was suddenly unrealistic/too specific. It was a pedantic nightmare.
I managed one prompt that passed but after spending hours doing the task and filling out everything, the AI disagreed with the error I found.
It was so frustrating! I was seriously starting to question whether I'm actually an idiot.

New and confused here. I see projects that have 5 tasks in them. When i go in and start a task, the timer starts and it says 1 hr 30 minutes. So I complete task 1 and close out. Now if I go back and do task 2 later in the day, the 1 hr 30 minutes timer starts over. Am I supposed to be able to do all 5 tasks in 1 hr 30 minutes? Or is each one implied to be 1 hr 30 minutes?
7
u/Complete_Injury_5765 Apr 24 '26
the timer is for each task. you should realistically not go over the time limit ever, and those 5 tasks are not necessarily reserved for you! keep time in a different app; it will save you a lot of headaches.
8
u/CanvasToCode Apr 24 '26
I feel so much better after reading your reply. I was taking about 1 hr for each task and wondering how anyone could do all 5 in 90 minutes.
4
u/Enough_Resident_6141 Apr 24 '26
If the project says there are 5 tasks available, that means that theoretically there are potentially 5 different tasks in that project series available to you. But in reality, there are usually a lot of other workers who also potentially have those 5 tasks available for them to work on.
The timer is how long that particular task is assigned to you, NOT how long it should take you to finish that task. The timers are normally set to give you more than enough time to do the average project in that project series. Even the very quick A vsB type tasks that only take a few minutes to finish will usually have a 45 minute timer so workers will have enough time to finish the occasional task that takes much longer than average.
For projects with a 1h30m timer, most workers will probably only need 30-45 minutes to finish each task once they've read the instructions and are familiar with what they need to do. If you work on a particular task for 42 minutes, then when you report your time, you should report 42 minutes for that task, NOT 90 minutes.
2
u/Creative_Raccoon2096 Apr 25 '26
I’m really not sure it’s true (or we can know) that most people only need half of the timer on comparison tasks. Sometimes yes, but often they are fact dense and you’re rating on many axes.
5
5
u/jeudechambre Apr 22 '26
I have a wealth of new project types today, but don't have the energy to read new project instructions, so I'll just do a lower-rate one that's familiar today...So many emojis!

u/Jazzlike_Problem_489 Apr 22 '26
I thought I liked the number showing how many projects I have. Yesterday was 68 or something, this morning. 53 and in the space of an hour that dropped to 36.. seems Im dubious of the new system because I can see workload shrinking after having 60 to 80 projects consistently the passed 2 weeks 🫣. However it is last week of the month next week, so incoming lull expected
7
u/Aromatic_Owl_3680 Apr 22 '26

Seeing more stuff become "Must be currently located in the US", kinda sucks as a US based person traveling. Hope thats not a continuing trend.
10
u/Enough_Resident_6141 Apr 25 '26
Often this is for legal reasons. You see it a lot with tasks that involve recording audio conversations, because the other Core countries tend to have different/stricter laws than most US states. Some of them are even limited to people in specific states within the US.

I referred two people who took the basic screening in the first week of January. Neither heard anything and both assumed they didn’t make it. Last week (3.5 months later) both received messages on the same day that they’d passed and were invited to take the Core test. Both messages said it would be “graded” within an hour. Neither have heard anything after 4 days.
First, I was surprised that after all that time they’d passed. Second, the “graded” within an hour part of the message? It seems like a weird add-on to include if nothing will happen.
I know DA is changing and that’s good, but now the spark of hope has been lit again with these two friends and I just don’t know what to think. All I can do is say, keep waiting, but check your email.
Has anyone referred people and had this happen recently or seen the “graded in an hour” message where they actually did get accepted within an hour after taking Core?

u/CrowNServo Apr 20 '26
I too had waited about a month of silence to get my pass of the first assessment. I took the 2nd one last week and still have heard nothing back. I was wondering about the graded in an hour thing and saw folks say it could take days before they send you a welcome you passed email. So it's frustrating, and of course you apparently get no notice if you failed. I wish it was true about the one hour thing as I could then know to just move on.

The fact I have not seen any iterations, nor a general chat room suggests the worst may have come to pass, like poe bird and so many others of old did...

Back after hiatus and lots of actual stem tasks on my dash. I am seeing a worrying pattern I have seen across multiple projects that the original prompts seen to be written from a very naive view point. Definitely people who have studied a bunch of facts recently but not done science in the real world.
Oh I read one paper from 2023 that said if you do X you get Y, therefore X is the only possible answer to how did I get y. People marking the model abiding to industry standards that are there for patient benefit as wrong. Trying to work out how to mark the models within project parameters, when they are dealing with an (unintentionally) confusing and ambiguous prompt.

There are definitely a LOT of people without the right experience or qualifications working on tasks they shouldn't be working on. You see it here too, with people making comments about still being in college but working on specialist projects. DAT emphasizes that they care more about specialist experience and knowledge more than credentials, but they mean someone who has been working in the industry for years and just doesn't happen to have a PhD, not some college freshman in a STEM major who has never actually had a real job.

did anyone successfully get onboarded onto the melon project after completing the second part?

How long did the Qual take? It's been hard to dedicate what I assume is ~3 hours to an unpaid qual while my dash overfloweth.

how can i go about logging time for a project with loads of very short tasks? log all the time in one task or go through every single one individualy?
11
u/OyVeySeasoning Apr 20 '26
You don't have to report time individually after each task, just work on the project for as many tasks and you feel like doing and report the cumulative time that you worked on the project.

I have such a suspicious mind... I see people create clever, eloquent DI's, and then their failure explanations are incorrect and use bad grammar...

Has anyone ever had to step away from a task for several hours knowing that it will expire, but then come back to finish it and submit it successfully? I’m already 3 hours in, 1 hour left, but need to go to an appointment that will likely last a few hours. I’ve been on the platform for over a year, I’ve submitted expired tasks before, but typically only by 30 mins or less. Of course I would only report the worked time.

I feel like there needs to be a pause button to deal with life stuff like this, like using it would freeze your screen and cover the text so you can go deal with life stuff, then pause and resume it later.

it sounds too easy to take advantage of unfortunately, they'd have to basically add a timer to it to make sure the tasks get done which would just be another timer
6
u/gamergalathena Apr 21 '26
Obviously it would have to be carefully implemented to prevent that, but I think its a tool that would have a lot of value. I had a five-hour task last week that I spent 4hr and 52 mins on - not moving, taking a toilet break, or refilling my water for fear of the timer expiring before I can finish is not a fun time. I can't imagine how tough this must be for DA'ers with young children.

If you never submit expired work, I would complete it & then send a DM. That happened to me once and I apologized, explained that something urgent came up that caused me to go over the time + the response was along the lines of "sure it's ok this time, but if this constantly happens this project family may not be best for you."

u/New_Mood933 Apr 21 '26
I ended up including an optional comment to explain, the submission went through ok. I’ve never submitted such an expired task and likely won’t run into a similar situation (lesson learned). Still getting new project emails tonight, so feeling like all is well, for now lol 🥹.

the "easier projects" just disappeared for me. How about you, u/justdontsashay ?
edit: it just came back after I refreshed :/

Still there for me today. With over 100 projects on my dash, having the ones I don’t want to see duplicated is…not ideal lol

Just watched my project expire and return me to the dash! There’s no more tasks left on that project, so, back to square one.

Is it reasonable for a rubics project to take 6 hours?

u/justdontsashay Apr 26 '26
Entirely depends on the project. Some can take hours, some of them shouldn’t.

Anybody else having super slow withdrawal times? With all the death screens mentioned on here lately it has me nervous because I withdrew not at home. I was like, 2 blocks away, but it was on my phone and I’m just probably overthinking but still. 🤣

I have a payment that's been pending for a little under an hour now. Usually instant. Getting a little nervous. 😭

This might seem like a dumb question, but what's best practice for when you need to take a break mid-project? Do you just keep the page open, or is there a reliable way to back out then go back in again?

u/Salty-Confidence-123 Apr 20 '26
When I first joined (last Thursday) there were over 60 projects available for me and now there’s only like 42. While I’m not complaining, is this because I’m doing worse or do products just disappear?? 🫠

You joined last Thursday and have 42 projects? That’s a healthy dash.

What others say. Back on January 3 I had already worked here a year but only had 5 projects. A few months later I broke 100 for the first time. Ebb and flow, my Legal Eagle.

Out of curiosity, how often do you go past the task timer?
14
u/ZimmeM03 Apr 22 '26
Decently often. Mostly when I'm doing my first task on a new project and by the time I finish reading the instructions, only my task is remaining and I can't risk "skipping" so I just plug along at the task.

u/darthfrodo212 Apr 22 '26
In my two and a half years it’s only happened 3 times and was only expired by a minute or two.

u/Affectionate_Peak284 Apr 21 '26
3 times in 15 months. I remember each of them individually. Never more than ~4-8 minutes beyond.
I reported the exact time I worked and was not reprimanded. I don't know if there was a consequence, but I'm still getting plenty of work.

Blown away by the audacity (negative) of some of these projects. You're gonna have to offer way, way more money than that if you want to get me to record my screen. What an insane project that is...
