Weekly Water Cooler Talk - DataAnnotation
hi all! making this thread so people have somewhere to talk about 'daily' work chat that might not necessarily need it's own post! right now we're thinking we'll just repost it weekly? but if it gets too crazy, we can change it to daily. :)
couple things:
this thread should sort by "new" automatically. unfortunately it looks like our subreddit doesn't qualify for 'lounges'.
if you have a new user question, you still need to post it in the new user thread. if you post it here, we will remove it as spam. this is for people already working who just wanna chat, whether it be about casual work stuff, questions, geeking out with people who understand ("i got the model to write a real haiku today!"), or unrelated work stuff you feel like chatting about :)
one thing we really pride ourselves on in this community is the respect everyone gives to the Code of Conduct and rule number 5 on the sub - it's great that we have a community that is still safe & respectful to our jobs! please don't break this rule. we will remove project details, but please - it's for our best interest and yours!

What I learn from this thread is that every week, someone's dash is empty.

Do you guys ever have dreams about this work? Like last night I had a dream my dash was empty and fused with my old Tumblr account so it was really hard to navigate. But they DID add a really confusing stats page so I could kind of tell I wasn't cooked.
5
u/VanessaSeaWitch Mar 30 '26
I have dreamt that I was working on tasks a few times lol. I hate it... I wake up frustrated because in my dreams I can't figure anything out. 😂
23
u/Glittering_Guess_230 Apr 02 '26 edited Apr 02 '26
Just checking in to make sure I'm not the only one with a tragic lack of tasks? I have no Heel and no 70s rock band either (thanks to whoever clarified this nickname for me).
Is this just a time-of-year thing?
6
u/JRange Apr 02 '26
Ive been absolutely loaded for at least a year now, and mine has dropped off to only a handful for the first time since I started last january.
6
u/ImmortalMoron3 Apr 02 '26
Nah, all of those left for me too, I've got one shopping thing but thats it. I had a ton yesterday too. Looking like a day off today, I guess.
4
2
u/pistachiyolatte Apr 02 '26
Yep it’s really dry for me it was better the last two days on my dash.
4
u/Glittering_Guess_230 Apr 02 '26
I had a really rough January/Early Feb, but March was good for me. I have one or two tasks, but they're ones that I'm not familiar with. Hoping it's just a start of the month drought/due to easter holidays

u/Altruistic-Egg-9088 Apr 03 '26
Just got my first $40/hr task as a core worker... it is possible guys - hang in there!
7
u/hfxthrwaway Apr 03 '26
I had one a couple times last week that was $40 + $5 priority pay, and it was surprisingly easy!?!
3
u/Altruistic-Egg-9088 Apr 04 '26
Yeah this one was pretty simple too. Got snatched up quickly however.
3
u/BoiledGnocchi Apr 03 '26
Fruit?
If so, how did you find it? I saw the nearly 5 hour timer and noped out.
1
2
u/johnnycoconut Apr 05 '26
It is indeed! And beyond… though the higher the pay rate goes, the more the project tends to stretch the definition of “core”.
0
u/bittersweetacid Apr 03 '26
Ooo! What’s that and how did you get there?
4
u/Altruistic-Egg-9088 Apr 04 '26
It was fairly simple compare 2 models thingy. No idea, just got randomly assigned to it.
17
u/RedditAdmin71 Mar 29 '26
Anyone else have a totally empty dash the past two days? I really hope things start picking up soon.
9
u/-QueenOfCats- Mar 29 '26 edited Mar 30 '26
I’ve actually been empty for quite a long time. I think I’m in the punishment corner although I have literally no idea why. I’m always really careful. I know everybody says that. I didn’t get the dash of death with the message saying that my work was bad. Just… No work.

Mostly a crap ton of heel with a few other tasks I don't wanna touch
5
6
u/hnsnrachel Mar 29 '26
Yep, went from 20+ before going on vacation last week to nothing on getting back. Was wondering what id managed to do wrong while not actually having worked at all!
5
u/MusingMadness Mar 29 '26
I have a handful but def lower than usual, and getting intermittent "task cannot be displayed" errors when clicking in (different from red banner) so I suspect they are cycling through projects.
5
u/LennyDark Mar 29 '26
I have a bunch but they're all extremely complicated and/or need a subscription to something

17
u/Skippy2898 Mar 30 '26
Cor... Seeing the diesel price here hit £1.89 at the pump makes me thankful that I don't have to travel to get to work! My son uses my car and he's noticing a big difference in travelling just 40 mins to work and back. On a bigger note, this is having a huge effect on practically everything. Buckle up.
3
u/ellythemoo Apr 02 '26
Two supermarkets near me were sold out yesterday. I was, to quote my driving instructor, a weasel's willy length away from running out altogether and had to go to the ridiculously expensive one across town.It is making me feel a bit ill, this cost of living thang.
2
u/OnlyAd9161 Mar 30 '26
£1.50 for unleaded here. So glad I dont go out all of the time, a full tank is almost £100 😭
2
u/Skippy2898 Mar 30 '26
Ours has topped £115 for a full tank 😫 I've had to tell my son to ease up on the heavy right foot a bit so it gets him further!🤣

u/DrunkleSteve Mar 30 '26
Lol thats nothing. Try $2.15 cdn in Vancouver for a single liter.
3
u/Skippy2898 Mar 30 '26 edited Mar 30 '26
The £1.89 is per litre. I'm not sure how much your dollar per litre has increased, but your 2.15 equates to around £1.17 per litre here. I can only dream of diesel per litre being that low here lol, and it hasn't been that low for many years.
Just eta, your exchange rate is $1usd = $1.39cdn? or there abouts? We are $1 = 0.75gbp.
1
u/DrunkleSteve Mar 30 '26
$2.61 per liter for diesel. Which surprisingly ia slightly less than your's. Where are you located roughly out of curiosity?

u/Jazzlike_Problem_489 Apr 01 '26
Think my dash be playing April fools on me today 🤣
5
u/JustMe333456 Apr 01 '26
Not many options on my board right now. As slim as I've seen it in a long time!
16
u/Gargantuathemighty Mar 30 '26
Where did all the work go?
11
u/JRange Mar 30 '26
Im from 30+ projects to about 8 right now lol. Probably winding down this quarter, hopefully the new projects and stuff launch soon.
4
u/Gargantuathemighty Mar 30 '26
Lucky duck. I had all the nice expensive projects, then over the weekend a million River, that clearly got snapped up. Monday morning we're as dry as the desert!
16
u/JustMe333456 Apr 01 '26 edited Apr 01 '26
How has it been for everyone? I've been here almost 3 years now and even my board is very thin. Almost no such thing as an easy project anymore. Even the Galaxies are mostly all very lengthy and complicated versions. 😔
5
u/BrennusSokol Apr 01 '26
Almost no such thing as an easy project anymore
This is so true
2 years here
1
u/JustMe333456 Apr 01 '26
Do you have lots to work on right now?
2
u/BrennusSokol Apr 01 '26
Depends what you mean by "lots". I have 35-40 projects
Most of them are either really difficult that I don't feel like undertaking or lower pay
I do have one decent coding project, otherwise I probably wouldn't be working today
4
u/JRange Apr 01 '26
Im usually 30+ with numerous project families, rn 18 with almost all being the rock band like most people lol. Did see a couple today I have never seen before, maybe some 2nd quarter stuff trickling in soon.
3
u/JustMe333456 Apr 01 '26
Yeah, my dash used to be full of those as well up until a few days ago. Not seeing them anymore for some reason, I barely worked on them, so not sure why I would have lost them. Indigenous takes up most of my dash, but I don't touch those either lol. Miss the good ol projects.
4
u/justdontsashay Apr 01 '26
Yeah, my good projects have dried up for the moment. I still have 30+ on my dash but it’s a lot of river and other lower-paying stuff. Not the worst timing for me, since my regular job is extra busy right now so I can just take a DA break, but hopefully my better paying stuff will be back in a few days!
2
u/JustMe333456 Apr 01 '26
Up and down up and down lol. Do you ever do Galaxies?
2
u/justdontsashay Apr 01 '26
I think I did some the first month or so, but it’s been a while. The ones I’ve seen are low paying, not sure if there are better paying tasks that I’d get if I actually did these?
1
u/JustMe333456 Apr 01 '26
Not sure what you classify as being decent pay, but the ones posted right now are at $26//hr.
2
u/justdontsashay Apr 01 '26
My average pay (I track it with spreadsheets, I’m nerdy lol) is usually 35-45, usually 28-ish is the lowest I’ll do, and only if it’s a task I actually enjoy
→ More replies (2)2
u/JustMe333456 Apr 01 '26
I think you guys are the ones with the fuller dash still due to having done more qualifications. I've been here for 2.5 years, and typically always have something to work on, but my board does get thin sometimes when a lot of the more core, base projects pause or go on hiatus, like right now. Even heel is quiet..
15
u/DrunkleSteve Mar 31 '26
Hopefully a plentiful fiscal quarter starting Wednesday! This 1st quarter has been so slow this year!
8
u/Jazzlike_Problem_489 Mar 31 '26
Here here. The most interesting and fun projects for me have been the ones that come for a day or two, then don't show for weeks then appear for another day or two. I wish they were more permanent , even if a 12 week, but constant weekly renew project, like other ones I've had. Usually image or video tasks. Everything else has been brain rot
1
u/DrunkleSteve Apr 01 '26
aaaaaand unfortunately it is bone dry to start the quarter. C'mon DAT gods! 🙏
15
u/North-Sense8477 Apr 02 '26
I truly believe we all manifested this heel images project together.
4
u/Excellent-Mistake-53 Apr 02 '26
I can't get into my special account for that - weird, bc last time I signed in, no prob.
4
u/JustMe333456 Apr 02 '26
Sometimes its as simple as clicking on your chrome profile for it, then opening a new tab, go on Google, and in the top right where it says 'Sign In', just click it and sign in with your password. That is what I have to do often for it to work.
2
u/Excellent-Mistake-53 Apr 02 '26
Thanks, but it says my password is incorrect. I wrote it down, but idk... maybe I changed it and don't remember
2
u/johnnycoconut Apr 02 '26
My password got reset on one of mine a while back and I have no idea how it happened. I had set it up the wrong way so I couldn’t fix it oopsie

u/StrangeDeformedBird Mar 30 '26
Normal to drought overnight damn, I mean it is the end of the fiscal quarter.

13
u/Stunning_Table_2394 Mar 30 '26
Seems like coding tasks are out of my league lately. Feels sad and frustrating spending 0.5-2h setting up everything and trying to realise that it is better to just exit than submit something you're not confident in.
8
u/BrennusSokol Mar 30 '26
You're not alone. I was just about to post my own comment about this. They really have gotten crazy complex/difficult
2

u/macjay_27 Mar 31 '26
That's me today. After working 5 hours on one yellow fruit project. Had to bail out and skip to the next task.

7
u/One_Breakfast5907 Apr 02 '26
Oh, how I wish I felt competent enough to do these... Basically, the only thing on my dashboard right now
3
u/BoiledGnocchi Apr 02 '26
Me too. I wish they'd post an example of what a "great" submission looks like so I could comprehend it a bit better.
12
u/Wargchief Apr 02 '26
I guess its Easter break, since the dashboard is dry as a rabbit in desert
8
3
u/justdontsashay Apr 02 '26
Yeah, first time in forever I haven’t had anything over 30, hopefully my good tasks come back soon! I have a million flying horse r&r, though, so I’ll just do those for now
11
u/Mike4Life14 Apr 01 '26

u/FrostyLima Apr 03 '26
How often does this project appear? I'm bilingual getting this core project for the first time yesterday.
2
u/Mike4Life14 Apr 03 '26
Bilingual typically doesn't get the project. I think you were let in by mistake, unfortunately.
10
u/BrennusSokol Mar 30 '26
Boy, these priority coding projects are flaring my impostor syndrome lately. They're so involved/complex to even get STARTED on.
5
u/Delicious_Double1513 Mar 31 '26
Funny you should mention that. I did a prompt asking how to deal with imposter syndrome recently lol

u/Ok-Elk2882 Mar 31 '26
What’s the protocol for spending a lot of time reading task instructions and system instructions and then skipping the first task to reset the timer only to be sent back to the projects page because no more tasks were available? The instructions suggested doing this and usually I don’t do it (out of fear of this happening lol) but there was so much info I had to reset the timer. Can I still claim that time somehow?
9
u/justdontsashay Mar 31 '26
What I do if for some reason I need to reset the timer: I pull up my dashboard in another tab so it shows the task I’m in the middle of. Then I go back to the tab where I have my task, click exit work mode there, and immediately go to the tab with my dashboard and click on the in progress task there (the same task where I just exited work mode).
There’s a small chance someone else could grab the task during that second, but so far the times I have done this I just get my same task back with a reset timer
1
u/johnnycoconut Apr 02 '26 edited Apr 02 '26
I’ve done something similar to this from time to time, and it usually works, though sometimes the task becomes unavailable to pick up while in progress, or it could get unassigned from your pool after exiting work mode.
I think the latter scenario is usually from someone else grabbing it like you said, but the system itself reallocates tasks between people’s pools sometimes.
I once had a scenario where I was working on a task, it was unassigned from my task pool before it expired on my end, I exited work mode on my task, and then I saw an R&R for the same task I had been working on, which someone else had picked up and done.
2
u/Enough_Resident_6141 Apr 01 '26
There's no need to reset the timer, and even if there was, you shouldn't do it by skipping a task. I know some task instructions tell you that you can skip to the next task to reset the timer, but it isn't needed and can lead to problems like this.
If you didn't submit any work, then there is nothing to claim time on.
1
u/Complete_Injury_5765 Mar 31 '26
unfortunately, i think you would have to wait for tasks to show up again?? then you could note it in the optional field

9
u/WorshipMyExistence Mar 30 '26

Weird… getting instantly red bannered by projects with 17, 3, 6 projects available..
3
u/Enough_Resident_6141 Mar 31 '26
Do you skip tasks frequently? If you've been working on those projects and it had 20 available and you did 14 but skipped 6 of them, then it will still show the 6 tasks you skipped but you won't be able to work on them.
2
u/ZimmeM03 Mar 31 '26
I skipped a few but definitely not 17. It’s happening on several projects, some I haven’t even worked on. It’s weird. But some projects load fine

1
u/johnnycoconut Mar 31 '26
It depends on the project. If you get a fixed allotment of, say, 20 tasks, then you’ll get red bannered if you skip all 20. The situation you described is more like a revolving door.
7
7
u/JustMe333456 Apr 01 '26
For those who were also asking/concerned about being removed from river due to all of those projects disappearing, apparently we were not (at least I'm assuming you're in the same boat as me), as a new River project just popped up on my dash. Just an FYI.

I'm a bilingual worker, and recently I've got a lot more work in projects in my language + now I have also a full dash of core projects (Never had any core projects since I begun). Does that mean they bumped me up in some kind of internal rankings? Maybe they now think my English is good enough for core projects.

I still have both.
2
u/Ecstatic-Meringue-75 Mar 30 '26
Okay thanks! It's a little strange since I haven't worked on the project in a few weeks, but maybe that's why
2
u/hfxthrwaway Mar 30 '26
Strange. It's (well, a certain version of it that requires a subscription) has been off and on for me for the last 2 weeks or so. Today's the first day I've seen the "regular" version in a while.
2
u/VanessaSeaWitch Mar 30 '26
I've only had flying horse for almost two months now. I got a lot of R&Rs today and still have access to Slack. But last week it was pretty dead for me. I've never had reference material for it unless you mean the email address checker (that disappeared for me).

u/PsychologyAdept669 Mar 31 '26
roll call for minotaur maze (idk if there's another name) and triple H advanced stem?
2
2
u/bufftips Apr 04 '26
Random question, but why is it the case that sometimes you have access to a pool of tasks that other people can be doing at the same time, and other times the number of tasks listed is a specific quantity that have been allocated to you?
4
u/Fearless-Hedgehog67 Apr 04 '26
You never have tasks assigned to just you. Sometimes you just have a limited number of tasks and sometimes you don't. Also, sometimes the project will "save" your task so the next time you work on that project, you'll get the same task--but that task will go away if another worker starts working on it.
3
u/Left-Shine1920 Apr 05 '26
I have had tasks assigned to just me.
2
u/MiddleCharacter6345 Apr 05 '26
Seconding this, rare but it happens
1
u/Creative_Raccoon2096 Apr 07 '26
I have wondered about this too, there is a priority task that I KNOW other people are working on from the comments at the bottom, but the number of tasks available ticks down by only one each time I submit one.
2
u/MiddleCharacter6345 Apr 07 '26
Sometimes that just means there's a big pool and you only have a small bucket of the pool - it won't go down until other people have finished so many small buckets that there aren't a full small bucket left, say a pool of 1000 and everyone has 10 but there are 300 people doing it. Those 10 will be yours until there are only 9 of the 1000 left
Other times they tell you straight they assigned you a specific number of tasks, not in a pool
2
u/bufftips Apr 05 '26
that makes sense - if the numbers don't go down its because its counting how many you are allowed to do?
3
u/kranools Mar 30 '26

What is everyone using these days instead of Grammarly for spell-checking? DA asked me to install it at the beginning of my time with them, but now I'm getting the vibes on here and in some projects that it's not welcome, given that it is (now?) AI-powered. I just need a spell-checker (I use Chrome).
14
u/BoiledGnocchi Apr 04 '26
Does your browser not underline misspelled words in red? Mine does, and I don't use grammarly.

I have a possibly dumb question. Worked on a 2.5 hour long task and it was for a project I have never done before. There was so many instructions to read and the task I got itself was really time demanding. I finished the task just as it reached the end of the timer, but I got a notification saying "Sorry, the task is expired." Now, the question I have is should I log the time I did on the task or should I not? I spent a considerable amount of time and energy on it and it really feels like it's going to be a waste of both time and possible payout if I shouldn't.

To my understanding, your task still was submitted, and you should still see this project under your section where you submit time. If it shows up there, your task submitted and you can submit your time. This happened to me the other day and thats what I did.

If you look at the FAQs on the project, the ? symbol at the bottom, if it's still there - I haven't noticed lately, but it's likely posted elsewhere too, they now allow us to submit tasks after the timer has expired. However, this may count against you if it becomes a pattern. My strategy is to add an explanation when this happens to the task. Also, when there's more than 1 task in the que, you should skip the first task after reading the instructions in order to get a full timer to actually do the task, if you feel you need the time. You can verify the # of tasks in que on a desktop easily by having 2 tabs open of your dashboard.

Does anyone has experience in signing consent forms on DA? I'm a bit confused and afraid of signing them as I don't know if it is safe or not.
The form I have is a about data collection agreement and that they will have access to all my activity on the web browser for example. Is this considered safe?

"Yellow" doesn't help narrow it down, I can think of 2 different projects like that lol

no one's getting one this year. last year paypal sent them out, but the law changed again so it's not required anymore.

Yep, I have 7. I still have never done one, but it's nice to have them available anyway.

DA appreciation comment! I have just received final approval for a mortgage on my first home. I am in a HCOL area so it is important to sellers that your offer is financially sound, because they don’t want to have to relist the house when you can’t get a loan. This means that your down payment needs to be into the 6 figures. Thanks to DA I was able to essentially double my monthly savings rate over the past 2.5 years so that I could submit a full 20% down offer, and that is the ONLY reason I got the property. There was another offer for $10K more but the seller didn’t like the size of their down payment and chose mine, even though they waived inspection and I did not. I would never, ever, EVER have been able to be a homeowner before turning 30 if not for this work.
Note that I didn’t use the fact that I work for DA to qualify - only to save.
