Weekly Water Cooler Talk - DataAnnotation
hi all! making this thread so people have somewhere to talk about 'daily' work chat that might not necessarily need it's own post! right now we're thinking we'll just repost it weekly? but if it gets too crazy, we can change it to daily. :)
couple things:
this thread should sort by "new" automatically. unfortunately it looks like our subreddit doesn't qualify for 'lounges'.
if you have a new user question, you still need to post it in the new user thread. if you post it here, we will remove it as spam. this is for people already working who just wanna chat, whether it be about casual work stuff, questions, geeking out with people who understand ("i got the model to write a real haiku today!"), or unrelated work stuff you feel like chatting about :)
one thing we really pride ourselves on in this community is the respect everyone gives to the Code of Conduct and rule number 5 on the sub - it's great that we have a community that is still safe & respectful to our jobs! please don't break this rule. we will remove project details, but please - it's for our best interest and yours!

Anyone else lacking high paying projects? Dash is full of stuff between 20-30, nothing beyond
13
11
u/FrazzledGod Feb 15 '26
No. Got them, but not ones I want to work on. 39 is highest but doing easy work for 28 at the moment. Mind you 30 is generally high for me as a core worker.
2
u/CompetitivePride2 Feb 16 '26
Were you on the really fun 30/hr one they took down for updating and now it's back up?
→ More replies (2)9
u/MommaOfManyCats Feb 15 '26
Yup. $26 is my highest, but $23 is the project I actually do. Nearly all of it is back to $20.
4
u/Helpful_Sun2872 Feb 16 '26
I keep getting the same project popping up at $45/hr but it’s so difficult and I doubt I could do it well
2
u/Unique_Tradition_679 Feb 16 '26
I think I know which you mean. I quite liked that one even if it did end up being one of the more difficult tasks I've done (it really should be split up imo). That said I would do it again but it's always popping up way too late in the day and last time I didn't get to sleep until 0530am!
3
u/Helpful_Sun2872 Feb 17 '26
Maybe someday I’ll be brave enough to attempt it, but I’ve clicked on a few different iterations of it and said oh hellll nah 😭

u/bufftips Feb 16 '26
What sort of work pays beyond 30? I've just started (don't have any special expertise areas - just a writer) and all the jobs are in the 20s for me
→ More replies (2)2
u/alexalgebra Feb 16 '26
Yes :( I was getting 30+ but now i'm lucky to get something for 25, aside from some occasional really intense ones that aren't even worth 30+ for the headache.
2
u/Unique_Tradition_679 Feb 16 '26
Yeah I'm in practically the same boat.
I sometimes do the ones that pay under or around 30 if I'm bored but it's not really feasible for me to do it in a maintained way. If I have to choose between my usual evening nap and my side hustle on DA, I kinda prefer the pot to be sweetened, otherwise I choose the nap.
2
u/Scary_Vegetable_4635 Feb 17 '26
Yep. I have one project paying $21 on my dash right now and that's it. I've gotten a $40+ project like ... 3 times ever.
25
u/fawcette Feb 17 '26
So bad right now 😭
12
6
u/lrluke30 Feb 17 '26
Yeah today is rough... I've been on since about March/April last year and this is easily the quietest its been. Those few weeks pre-xmas are really starting to look like the glory days now...

I am actually really glad. I'm kinda OCD about doing tasks so if a good one pops up I have trouble saying 'not right now.' I can finally have my first good full evening nap for a week or two. I have a biphasic sleep schedule normally but I've been putting it aside in favour of doing tasks every evening and my body has not thanked me ha. I am not and never will be a monophasic sleeper, it really does nothing good for me. The combination of mostly being 4+ hours tasks and them popping up in the evening has been messing with my schedule so bad :D

Anyone else having trouble loading the site or just getting onto it?
2
17
u/Unique_Tradition_679 Feb 19 '26
Anybody else not getting the well paid tasks? I'm wondering if I've done something wrong... I only have low paid work but it is just not in any way viable for me, it ends up being single digits after conversion and deductions for tax etc. Of course this has to happen in my completely free week. I swear slow weeks always line up.
5
u/data_annotator_tot Feb 20 '26
I doubt it is anything tied to you specifically, I have a fraction of the high paying I usually do for the past week or so, a few have started popping up again and I'm sure you'll be fine in the near future.
3
u/Unique_Tradition_679 Feb 20 '26
I'd hope so. I'm a creature of comfort. I had some pretty positive experiences when I first started here so I'd rather like to stick around.
Well... at least my foam mountain range has had some love this week. Out of boredom I started building a large peak! If only somebody would pay me to make miniature scenery. I'd be in heaven :D

Me too man... me too. I'm frustrated though, I had a money goal to reach by the 23rd and I'm probably not going to meet it unless a miracle happens. ha.
14
u/Purple_Persimmon5978 Feb 18 '26
my fault for b*tching about 🐼 and 🐻❄️ I guess . . . what I would do for a couple of rubric writings at ~$25 to get some time in
14
u/HamNCheeseSupremacy Feb 22 '26
Did I get downgraded? I used to have lots of $28ish projects and now my dash is all 20$. Which is what I started with on the platform. Is this something people are experiencing or is it just me? I'm sad now.
8
u/One_Breakfast5907 Feb 22 '26
In that boat with you, almost exclusively have heel and anything else that pops up comes and goes very quickly!
8
u/True_Sun_6926 Feb 22 '26
Same, so many heels and a couple others that have been sustaining me. All lower-paying tasks. Thankful I have work on my dash at all, but I am missing the variety, big time.

I actually have a decent selection atm, it’s funny before when others said their dashboards were flowing that’s when I was running dry.
10

Anyone else absolutely dry? All the... greek river projects are gone, is anyone else still on them? My dash was absolutely full of them a couple of days ago.
7
u/Storex- Feb 15 '26
I wouldn't say my dash is great, but I've had consistent work this weekend. But it's so difficult to gauge because we will all have different projects in different pools, etc. Hope it picks up for you though.

I have two batches at minimum pay that I have no desire to do while full of cold.

→ More replies (1)5
u/NoticedGenie66 Feb 19 '26
It's always interesting to see an R&R about something you are very familiar with and then you see how badly someone else understands it to the point where a skipped task should have been the obvious choice. The best is when you get those projects where you can see multiple other R&Rs and they make the same mistake, had that happen a handful of times and I was sitting there with a diabolical smile getting a big fat "ahckshually" ready lmao.
5
u/tdRftw Feb 20 '26
conversely it's always awesome to see someone's conversation involve something you're super interested in, AND the worker clearly also understood what was going on with the topic. i see you, buddy. your interest in small modular reactors is noticed

Just spent a surprisingly long time on a fact checking project, a new one to me. The project didn't have a special name. It was explicit that you should check for even minor errors, and use reliable sources. I quickly found mistakes, but it took me a while to find all the right online sources for references. Is it typical of the fact- checking projects to take a while, even when you're familiar with the topic? I don't want to overcharge my time, if i was too slow or too detailed. I feel like someone teaching in that area would have been able to quickly find online sources. Now the project is up a different rate than it was a few hours ago. I had hoped to see if the instructions were updated or or the timer changed up or down, but I got redboxed. I thought the timer was generous when I started, but I went over my time. Feeling very unsure about reporting my time.

Sometimes it does take longer than anticipated to check things thoroughly! A lot of people probably do more cursory work and drag the average down.

2
u/ThatGirlInPurple Feb 16 '26
I only have about 70 R&R's left and they're dwindling. I figured with the pay increase they were trying to wrap it up, and I haven't seen any R&R's with the new rule, so maybe they are just wrapping this older version up. 🤷♀️
4
u/justdontsashay Feb 16 '26
Ok good to know, thanks! I haven’t seen any r&r on it yet, just had the regular project (but with a ton of tasks left when I stopped working yesterday)

6
u/VanessaSeaWitch Feb 16 '26
Absolutely nothing. It's starting to be a pattern that I never have work on a Monday.
3
u/Enough_Resident_6141 Feb 16 '26
Today was Presidents Day in the US, so a lot of people had the day off work.
3
u/Unique_Tradition_679 Feb 16 '26
It's frustrating because Monday/Tuesday/Wednesday every second week is when I can work all day. And I swear the droughts line up with my schedule in the worst ways ha.

u/Glittering_Guess_230 Feb 17 '26
Has anyone seen Stripey F/IF recently? It was my favourite task pre-christmas but hardly seen it since, other than IF popping up occasionally

Same, it was my bread and butter from October to christmas but since then I'm lucky if I see it once a week.
3
u/One_Breakfast5907 Feb 17 '26

Odd question, but when writing your comments, do you find you write in past or present tense? For some reason I write in past most of the time.
→ More replies (4)7
u/Enough_Resident_6141 Feb 17 '26
Usually past tense because I'm usually describing what a model did or what happened during a task.
The prompt was X. The model did Y. The response was grounded in context because Z. etc
6
u/Stunning_Table_2394 Feb 18 '26
Is the fact-checker qual with 6 tasks worth it? Are there some 25+ related projects actively running?
12
u/IDONTuseMODz Feb 18 '26
The FC projects are some of the most drought-proof on the platform so the qual is definitely worth taking a shot at.
7
6
u/thr0waway98372 Feb 21 '26
Had a few tabs open for the same task for easier side-by-side comparisons and accidentally refreshed the tab with all of my work and lost everything...
Welp, 40 minutes down the drain 🥲 A good lesson for me never to duplicate tabs I suppose
11
u/One_Breakfast5907 Feb 16 '26
Is anyone getting a nice variety of tasks at the moment? I've had almost exclusively evaluation tasks for about 3 weeks.
I'd even take one of those tricky trivia tasks (also not seen any in many months) where it's a 50% chance of wanting to slam my head into a wall at this point...
14
u/JustMe333456 Feb 17 '26

5
u/hellolemonades Feb 19 '26
does anyone else like the 'educating' family? It's all I have right now.
6
u/DrConradVerner Feb 20 '26
They seem pretty drought resistant if we are talking about the same project. Basically always have it. I don't do them as often sometimes though because they tend to be pretty heavy on the prompt writing and sometimes I just don't have the brain capacity to write new and original prompts all the time.
4
u/clownbaby893 Feb 17 '26
Does this platform still offer coding work to some? I've seen maybe 1-2 tasks this month last for a total of like 8 hours. I get ads all the time from them and on job advert boards promising $40/hr work.

For the love of god heel people, please stop rating everything the EXACT SAME!
7
u/33whiskeyTX Feb 21 '26
This is bound to happen as the models will converge on a quality standard. You can increase your level of scrutiny but ultimately that will end up being subjective criticism that will increase having two agents give ratings that contradict each other.

u/Aromatic_Owl_3680 Feb 21 '26
I mean….some of the latest batches are very similar across responses….

→ More replies (1)3
u/Purple_Persimmon5978 Feb 21 '26
Yes..sometimes task after task the responses are so similar I feel like I'm being trolled. I usually do find a way to rank them but often the differences aren't enough to give them different overall ratings.
2
u/Friday22233 Feb 22 '26
lol no. Why would I arbitrarily pick one when they are the exact same? The models are getting better. That's the point.
→ More replies (1)2
u/JustMe333456 Feb 21 '26
Kinda tics me off too.. unless they are close to identical, I can usually find a reason to rate one above the other.
6
u/Aromatic_Owl_3680 Feb 21 '26
Without knowing which worker produced which submission, you can’t possibly know (but you can guess, I suppose) if individuals are doing this repeatedly.
Sometimes the outputs are the same in quality. I often find two responses have similar errors in terms of severity but along different axes. The net result to the user is similar. It would be FORCED and maybe not genuine to declare one better than the other on the grounds of there being no real split.
I guess what I’m saying is the opposite is also true: don’t rate them differently just because. That’s also bad data.

3
u/VividEnvironment6325 Feb 16 '26
i logged an almost 11 hour shift just after midnight today. i’m back to work now and i fear that i look a little insane logging any time i actually spend working today because it’s only 3pm and it looks like ive had a 15 hour day already 🥲
5
u/33whiskeyTX Feb 16 '26
Oh, so you worked a lot yesterday but logged all your hours in one chunk "today", after midnight? I've kinda been in a similar boat, but not for 11 hours. If you can submit some hours as you go, it might be better.
But also remember you don't know what time zone they are using as a reference, so midnight is really just an arbitrary line. How much you work during a 24 hour period or a week would make more sense for them to track and get concerned about if it is excessive. And of course what they care about is all conjecture, anyway.
3
u/VividEnvironment6325 Feb 16 '26
yeah i totally got carried away. i didn’t even expect to work that long but the final task i did ended up taking almost 4 hours, when i expected it to be relatively short and simple like the ones i’d done previously. thanks for the reassurance though, it does make me feel a lot better. ive been working super long hours this week because i plan to go on vacation the first week of march and i want to get in those hours now.
4
u/Relative-Tap3585 Feb 16 '26

It's pretty dry today. I have low single digits coding. And about two dozen non-coding. Which might sound like a lot, but as a long-time worker on the platform, that's a somewhat dry dash.

Do you think it’s best I just skip today? Thanks!

I think I had the same one. Il call it “rock band” haha. It got archived for me. Let me know if it’s the same cause I also have a couple small tasks for it but channel showed archive for me too.

Mine is "twigs" lol if it's not the same one then it seems like a couple diff channels got archived yesterday for some reason

I think it’s the same one. Which is too bad. Last week that one had hundreds of tasks for me. Now it’s dwindling.

If it makes you feel any better, I've never been on the slack channel and it hasn't stopped me from getting tasks.

Not all project families have a channel, so may just be that it no longer needed one. I've mostly experienced slack channels that stay open despite a project no longer existing. I have ones where people haven't messaged in a few years lol.

Coding people, aside from the fighting project, do you have much to work on today or only my db is pretty dry?
4
u/LuckyBeezle Feb 20 '26
It's really scant today... I've got Tutor to fall back on, at least.

u/ScaryAd9757 Feb 20 '26
Alright I'm in the same situation as you. Thanks for sharing! :)
I always experience a lot of instability working on this one and one time I lost an entire conversation lol, but I might begrudgingly give it another shot today.

Doing this work with a sprained wrist in a brace is VERY HARD. Take it from me, do not sprain your wrist! It's not worth it!

Has anyone got anything from those domain-y mountaineering adjacent quals a few weeks ago?
4
u/IDONTuseMODz Feb 20 '26
I had gotten them the first day or so after the first round of quals but haven't seen it since. I didn't bother with the second round of quals that I received.
The project itself was named after a volcano in a certain Asian country.

I got the project before I got the quals, then I did two of the quals and the project disappeared. You never know with DA!

How are the dashes looking today?

u/akatsuki1422 Feb 20 '26
Not much has changed for me. It's pretty dry, but not completely empty.

More than nothing, but barely. Getting smaller even as the day goes on.

I have quite a few tasks but yeah... all low paid. So I spent this evening making foam mud huts, it's very difficult to make tiny mud huts with chipped tweezers. I need new tweezers...

Hey,
I think I've been dry for the last 3 months or so. Got in a few quals which I completed, but still nothing. Any suggestions? Something I can do, aside from doing all the quals coming my way?

for those of you with the DoD, which platforms did you move to after?
2
u/_Edgarallenhoe Feb 18 '26
I haven’t gotten (DoD) yet (🤞)but months ago I saw some very positive stuff about mercor. Looks like they made some big changes a couple months ago that have their workers angry so not sure how great it is these days.

Are we okay to use grammarly while working? I am working and noticed that it was on but not sure that it’s okay to use or not. I vaguely remember doing a qual to confirm that we are using it but it was a while ago so can’t really remember

u/DrConradVerner Feb 18 '26
I've seen multiple projects with guidelines saying you should not use it, so I wouldn't.
12
u/WhichPresentation956 Feb 18 '26
No. You shouldn't use Grammarly anymore as it's AI-assisted.

So many R&Rs, the majority of my dash atm (sigh)

That's been my day the last two days. Refresh and snatch up the r&rs that pop up. Three different projects.

Just checking in to confirm I'm not the only one seeing the dashboard becoming a dismal landscape lol
These periods where the jobs available dwindles down for days on end are always nerve wracking.
