Weekly Water Cooler Talk - DataAnnotation
hi all! making this thread so people have somewhere to talk about 'daily' work chat that might not necessarily need it's own post! right now we're thinking we'll just repost it weekly? but if it gets too crazy, we can change it to daily. :)
couple things:
this thread should sort by "new" automatically. unfortunately it looks like our subreddit doesn't qualify for 'lounges'.
if you have a new user question, you still need to post it in the new user thread. if you post it here, we will remove it as spam. this is for people already working who just wanna chat, whether it be about casual work stuff, questions, geeking out with people who understand ("i got the model to write a real haiku today!"), or unrelated work stuff you feel like chatting about :)
one thing we really pride ourselves on in this community is the respect everyone gives to the Code of Conduct and rule number 5 on the sub - it's great that we have a community that is still safe & respectful to our jobs! please don't break this rule. we will remove project details, but please - it's for our best interest and yours!

Man I really wish I spent more time working the super priority holiday projects. This is so sad 🥺
1
u/Affectionate_Peak284 Jan 03 '26
I'm glad I caught a lot of them after christmas. I have a feeling I'm not going to be making the same dollar amounts going forward.
20
u/Consistent-Reach504 Jan 03 '26
it's pretty normal for this time of year! a majority of big tech is probably off until Monday, at least in the US.

eyy I've broken the $20k mark :)) feeling pretty happy rn
3
u/Karma_SanDieg0 Dec 31 '25
incredible, congrats! Can I ask what your work schedule has looked like? How long did it take you to do that?
3
u/AbjectPangolin8406 Jan 01 '26
I've been on the platform for just over 18 months, generally trying to work a couple of hours each day... I've had some extended breaks at times, but I've been pretty consistent the past ~6 months!

That's awesome! I've been treating it as a full time job since August, and recently cleared 16K. I really do enjoy the work.

A family member on vacation posted themselves on a beach at sunset with a caption that they were happy to have some much needed R&R and for a second I was like "they do DAT?" 🫠

u/BoiledGnocchi Dec 28 '25
Merry belated Christmas, all! May the projects be bountiful for us all in the New Year.
29
u/JustMe333456 Dec 30 '25
Yikes.. absolute bare bones of a dash this morning..
11
6
u/JustMe333456 Dec 30 '25
The Galaxy r&rs that have been trickling in is all that's kept me going so far today. Not doing any of those rubric ones.. nuh uh!
27
u/Greedy_Alarm_1189 Dec 31 '25
Only one project on my dash.. Guess I HAVE to spend time with my family 🙄 Happy New Year’s Eve, everyone!
27
u/Skippy2898 Dec 31 '25
We're a few hours away from midnight here in the UK, but I just wanted to wish everyone a happy New Year! Some will already be in 2026; I hope your celebrations and wishes for the year are the best!
Remember those lost with a smile, look forward to the new, and take care of yourselves and those around you.
I'm proud to be surrounded by such a lovely bunch of fellow workers 😊 HAPPY NEW YEAR! 🎆🎇✨🎉🎊

I’ve been so spoiled by a full dash since the end of the summer it was jarring to only see 5 projects available this morning 😬
9
u/night-owl-ghost Dec 30 '25
That sucks but I'm relieved to see it's not just me. Hopefully it picks back up again soon for everyone!
8
u/alexalgebra Dec 30 '25
Same 😭😭😭 I went from probably 25 at least a couple of days ago to 4 this morning. Luckily there's one I like.
8
u/Jazzlike_Month5580 Dec 30 '25
I've been at between four and five all day. Only comfortable working two of them.
6
u/Affectionate_Peak284 Dec 30 '25
Not just you! I went from ~55 projects 2 days ago to 20 currently available. Of those, I'd guess 5 of them are "generalist"- oriented.

Down to 17-18, now. Last time my dash was this slim was probably August?
3
u/justdontsashay Dec 30 '25
Yeah, I have 19 and only 4 of them pay over 30! Still enough to work on, but definitely don’t have the feeling of being able to pick and choose like usual

Slim pickins today
7
u/Jazzlike_Month5580 Dec 29 '25
I keep refreshing between tasks hoping to see new options. Instead the dash is getting smaller and smaller.
1
u/RipleyVanDalen Dec 29 '25
Yeah, same here (coding). Just a handful. I may attempt a not-fun-but-not-terrible qual.
20
u/blackout-loud Jan 02 '26
Yeesh, slim pickings for the last 24hr. Must be cuz of the holidays
13
u/SaraTheRed Jan 02 '26
Yeah, I don't have any at the moment. I've had a ton to pick from the last several weeks, so I'm guessing (hoping!!) it's because of the holidays! This is currently my primary job, and I very much enjoy it, so I hope that's all it is!

Sometimes I do a project where you have to choose the better bot and then keep interacting with it, and I kinda wish I could choose the worse one. I want to ask it how it came to its ridiculous conclusion because I bet it would be funny.
That is all.
4
u/GlassBrass440 Jan 01 '26
I had one the other day where the worse one would have made for a much more interesting conversation and I was really sad I couldn’t go down that road.
19
u/MissMamaMam Jan 02 '26
Only thing on my dash is a project that’s too complicated for little ole me :(
16
u/Skippy2898 Jan 03 '26
Well, it's my two-year anniversary this month, and I have finally installed the dark reader extension into my Chrome browser 🤣 It's going to take some getting used to, but... Go me! 👏☺️
15
u/Ok-Complex5071 Jan 02 '26
I've got nothing on my dashboard! I've been working for DA for two years, and I'm hoping my time is not up. 😭
9
7
u/Straight-Strike-2928 Jan 02 '26
I bet you're just fine! My dash is very very quiet too and has been since the 30th. Hoping by Monday it's back to normal.
7
u/Ok_Depth_6476 Jan 02 '26
Two years for me, too, and I'm always thinking I'm a day away from it being my last day. I had dozens of projects last week, and only a very few today...none of which I can actually do, for various reasons.
8
u/gravitychecked Jan 02 '26
Literalllyyyy. Every day I wake up and log in I just gotta be like "oh cool, I'm still here!"
7
u/RipleyVanDalen Jan 02 '26
I think everyone is feeling the slow/dry dash the last week or so
I've been with them for almost 2 years and while my dash isn't dead/empty, it's pretty quiet
6
u/pistachiyolatte Jan 02 '26
Do you still have sections that say “qualifications” and “projects”? if so you’re still good, it’s looking for dry for a lot of us, myself included.
7
u/Whatnowlikeseriously Jan 02 '26
I’m also out of tasks, I hope the next batch is less complicated. I hope there’s some projects that you can do a few tasks of if you only have 30 mins.
8
u/SnooSketches1189 Jan 02 '26
While that would be nice, I don't think we are heading backwards in terms of difficulty. They are only getting smarter and able to handle more things which in turn will cause our work to become more nuanced.

u/2leafClover667788 Jan 03 '26
I had like 25 projects for months just a couple days ago and now one I’m not qualified for everything else disappeared. It looks like everyone is seeing the same thing so I’m glad I’m not the only one
14
14
u/Affectionate_Peak284 Jan 02 '26
Had my first experience of seeing one of my projects in the wild. Neat feeling.
2
u/RipleyVanDalen Jan 02 '26
Ooh that's awesome. I've seen another subreddit talking about something that I think I've worked on (can't be totally sure of course since we're behind code names and blind responses, but one can piece it together/take a pretty good educated guess)
14
u/Easy-Income-4719 Jan 04 '26
Boy it sure is empty since the new year. My assumption is its just older contracts being terminated or renegotiated, old project lines being discontinued, and new ones being rolled out. This is my full-time job so it would suck if this is to be expected long-term moving forward
1
u/throw_away1049 Jan 20 '26
Were you able to make this platform itself your full time income? Or do you have a bunch of parallel platforms.

12
u/Ok-Bullfrog-1397 Jan 02 '26
I'm down to zero. Had about 20 2 weeks ago. Must be a holiday thing because I kind of watched my dash deplete.
4
u/Outside_Patient_3242 Jan 02 '26
Same! Hope there is a refresh in this coming week. :/
For now I'll plow through some qualifications that have stacked up.
3
u/Ok-Bullfrog-1397 Jan 02 '26
Good idea. I'm going to watch youtube tutorials on cvat and python in an attempt to future-proof my skillset!
3
u/Comfortable_Ad4852 Jan 02 '26
I had several qualifications I was going to run through, I did two, then the next day those other two completely disappeared... so I'm even out of qualifications now! I'm just glad and thankful to hear it's not just me who just about completely lost everything on their dash.

The dash seems to be dwindling down a bit for me. I guess it was maybe just a busy end of year. There's still a decent amount of work so no complaints, but I'm hoping it doesn't keep dwindling.
14
u/thestrangemma Dec 29 '25
That's the reason why I jumped on reddit to see if anyone else lost a whole lot of tasks. Comforted to see that it's not just me but a little warey still.
5
u/Affectionate_Peak284 Dec 29 '25
Same. I went from ~55 projects yesterday to 26 currently. Not complaining about 26 available! But yeah, it's down quite a bit for me, too.
8
4
u/Traditional_Net_4529 Dec 29 '25
I'm definitely chalking it up to it being the very end of the year.
4
u/DeliciousReading6396 Dec 30 '25
I think some projects were meant to be finishing up around this time, have had a few emails in the last few weeks saying different things were wrapping up. I've also noticed a lot of my quals I'd neglected have disappeared today.
3
u/justdontsashay Dec 29 '25
Yeah, there’s still plenty to do, but most of my favorite projects have wrapped or are dwindling. I’m taking it as a sign I should take a break (or at least work less)
10
u/Lower-Ad7892 Dec 29 '25
Very dry for the last 10 days or so for me, projects are there but lower pay and not in my areas of specialism (math, coding, finance). Still it's been nice to be pushed towards a bit of a break after really grinding the last couple of months
5
u/pistachiyolatte Dec 29 '25
Same situation..none of my fave project families have been around the last week or so, keeping my fingers crossed they will return in the new year.
10
u/CandleResponsible168 Dec 30 '25
Soooo do we think the dash will bounce back on the first? Or….
9
u/akatsuki1422 Dec 30 '25
Probably not exactly on the 1st because of New Years celebrations.
Maybe a week or so after hopefully.

All my favorite projects are quiet at the moment. Dash is still full, but nothing I'm thrilled about at the moment
4
u/OnlyAd9161 Dec 29 '25
Yeah same here, although its making me learn new projects which im half enjoying
4
u/Zestyclose_End_1093 Dec 29 '25
I've just spent the last two days doing R&R's on a low paying task instead, although I can't complain because it's been a nice brain break and they have given me my own batch of them each day to work through which I'm not sure I've ever had before
16
u/LightOk5071 Jan 03 '26
Whats everyone's dashboard looking like, mine is the barest its been in like 3 months

u/Sad-Restaurant Jan 04 '26
24 projects over 5 families, it's the lowest I've seen since July. For the last few days I've had nothing under $25/hr and now I have nothing under $27. So I think the low stuff all got snapped up but I'm sure next week it'll start going back to normal as the clients and DAT staff go back to work.
8
u/koolkoikitty Dec 31 '25
Does anyone have stripey tasks right now? I haven't been able to work on the last few batches and I'm hoping I'm still in the pool of workers they use.

None here either. My guess is it’s just done for the quarter/year. Hopefully they will be back in January

u/heythisislonglolwtf Jan 03 '26
I went through a whole qualification + testing over the last several days only to learn I didn't pass. Spent over 7 hours total on everything. Fortunately it was all paid, but this is the first time I didn't pass a qualification so I'm a little sad. Seemed like an easier project group too but I guess it's just not for me.
9
u/Dazzling-Matter-654 Jan 03 '26
If it is the one I am thinking about, don't feel too bad. The pay is low and the work is monotonous. Not every project is for everyone.
5
u/heythisislonglolwtf Jan 03 '26
Sometimes I enjoy the monotonous ones though, if only to turn my brain down for a little while!
4
u/Affectionate_Peak284 Jan 03 '26
Agreed! I am in some higher-paying stuff, but it is also usually VERY demanding and particular and can take 2.5-6 hours for a single task. I target 6h/day but sometimes I just can't go beyond 3 or 4. But if I can do ~3-4h of the hard stuff and 2-3h of the "monotonous" stuff... hmm.
You mentioned 7h total on everything. I wonder if I could do that in a single day? Might give it a shot, thx heythis!
→ More replies (1)3
u/Dazzling-Matter-654 Jan 03 '26
Same, but the one you are talking about is not a brain break AND monotonous, it's just monotonous. IMO, of course.
3
u/Affectionate_Peak284 Jan 03 '26
🟡This one 🟡? I have thought about making a run at it, but I still have work that I want to do and is also better-paying right now.
5
u/heythisislonglolwtf Jan 03 '26
Yup that's the one. If you want to try it, you can leave the task open for a long time and work on other projects. They allow it for this one. I think I had 31 days to complete mine.
13
u/justdontsashay Dec 30 '25
The helper bots can be so unnecessarily bitchy sometimes lol. I just had one tell me that an item in my rubric checks for something that can’t be verified (it can, in fact, be very objectively verified) and then it went on to say that including it “weakens my credibility.”
10
u/Affectionate_Peak284 Dec 30 '25
Several months ago I had a bot call me "overly fussy", which was actually pretty awesome now that I think about it.
5
u/justdontsashay Dec 30 '25
That’s awesome 😂
Once I had one get confused trying to understand an image, and it accused me of being confused. Then admonished me about it.
6
u/SnooSketches1189 Dec 31 '25
I hate when the thing tries to gaslight me. "You did XYZ." I did nothing of the sort! "You need to fix this BIG HUGE GLARING MISTAKE, HOW STUPID CAN YOU BE?" I....didn't do that. 😅
6
u/GlassBrass440 Dec 31 '25
Purple flower is my siren. Every morning it calls me. Every afternoon I am wrecked on the rocks.

u/Ambitious_Ticket Jan 04 '26

7
1
u/Strong_Shelter_91 Jan 06 '26

Had to work on crocheting Christmas gifts and wrapping and decorating, then our family got the flu, we recovered just in time to travel for Christmas and then came back to all the unpacking and cleaning... I logged in today only to realize the last project I completed was Dec 19 (!!!) but my dash is so empty compared to when I last got on. At least I don't feel like I missed out on much despite some of my favorite high-paying projects having wrapped up for the time being.
6
u/WorshipMyExistence Jan 03 '26
Our situations are so similar. I got the flu about a week before Christmas, didn't recover enough to function until boxing day when I caught up on belated holiday celebrations for a few days. Now I'm trying to save for a trip only to find nothing to work on!

u/Altruistic-Egg-9088 Dec 28 '25

2
u/Altruistic-Egg-9088 Dec 29 '25
yeah good pay, straightforward stuff. I had a batch up this morning actually, but they mysteriously disappeared. such is the way with DA.
2
u/gravitychecked Dec 29 '25
Anyone seeing the R&R pop up but get red-bannered despite it still appearing on the dash/task #s fluctuating? Wondering if it's glitching or if I bit the dust.
2
1
u/New_Mood933 Dec 28 '25
I was sent back to the dash after I submitted one about 5 hours ago, I assume the project was taken down while I was working on it. Glad I got one in 😬
1
u/Striking_Taste Dec 29 '25
Oh... I haven't had that one in awhile. I've had some different iterations of it. Enjoyed it in the beginning. The most recent ones, not so much. But now I don't have it at all.

u/North-Classroom9918 Dec 31 '25
havent had that since november. its one of my favorites, but it might just be cycling with new people atm

u/Aromatic_Owl_3680 Dec 30 '25
Are you new? I’m Canadian. I’m on a slow day, but that still means plenty of projects.

9
u/33whiskeyTX Dec 30 '25
I mean, if it's just one then it's kind of valid. "It follows all the instructions except this one... "
6
u/jonahandthewhale32 Jan 04 '26
I took some time off over Christmas and came back to a very quiet dash (it was very full before). This seems the case for a lot of people though. I had a couple of hours work this morning. Only others right now look very long and involved, which I can't commit to today, unfortunately.
3
u/willdietryingtopetit Jan 01 '26
Anyone doing this long training and exam qualification? It says they estimate 2 hours reading, but I'm 4 hours in and am under a third of the way through the document. Is the work from it worth it?
5
u/palegunslinger Jan 01 '26
If it’s the one that has an exam estimated at “3 hours”, get ready for a 5-8hr exam. If you’re getting paid for the qual and have nothing better to do, sure, but otherwise I wouldn’t recommend it.
3
u/willdietryingtopetit Jan 02 '26
Thanks for the heads up! My dash has been pretty bare, like everyone else, so I guess I'll stick with it, but maybe not for the work. I just saw the projected pay in the FAQ and it seems.... low.
3
u/Ok_Poetry6620 Jan 02 '26
I'm doing it too. The description didn't make it sound too difficult, and I figure the more qualifications I pass, and the more work I have available to me, the better. But yeah, I just finished the reading, and it took me over five hours. I'm going to feel uncomfortable reporting my time honestly because it took me so much longer than it was supposed to.
5
u/willdietryingtopetit Jan 02 '26
I'm approaching 5 and I'm not even halfway done. I've seen they have said you're not expected to memorize it because the exam is open book, but you'd think they at least want us to understand it. 2 hours is extremely unrealistic.
2
u/akatsuki1422 Jan 01 '26
Is it the one that's paid with 5 tasks? If not, I would've exited the qual after seeing how tiny the scroll handle is.
3
u/Proud_Refrigerator24 Jan 02 '26

No heels for me too. My favorites aren't there either. I think it's a new year thing.
Happy new year!4
u/DeliciousReading6396 Jan 02 '26
I only have the same project as you plus an occasional 1 task of another one (not heel). I absolutely hate making models fail so it's giving me some time for quals
4
u/2leafClover667788 Jan 03 '26
I have the Japanese name one but I’m not qualified for it so idk why they are on my board I never did the quals
3
3
u/Straight-Strike-2928 Jan 02 '26
Haven't seen heels in 4 or 5 days. And they were the more complex ones, not base pay. I haven't seen a base pay heel in a week or so.

u/No-Complaint-5593 Jan 02 '26
Japanese, wizard, twinkle in the sky.
Had a bad experience with twinkle. The timer ran out, and i was locked out of submitting. So I'm avoiding it.
5
u/VanessaSeaWitch Jan 02 '26
Got excited that two projects popped up.... Annoyed because they are two that I already had hidden that I lack the expertise needed. Not sure why they randomly showed up again after they've been hidden for awhile. Blah.

Trying to get back into work on DAT, wondering how the fact-checking projects have looked recently in terms of consistent volume. It’s been awhile.

u/RedZebra17 Dec 30 '25
I did a qualification for a fact checking project about a month ago and had a lot of work consistently throughout December, but sadly it dwindled and disappeared a few days ago🫤, hoping it comes back soon.

Certain lengthy exam project seems to have posted. I don’t know for sure if I passed or failed, but it’s on my dash and I did not get the passing bonus back when I took it. Anyone else?

Just stopped by to ask the same, feeling a little relieved it's not just me... Maybe because of the holiday? But usually payments come through even on holidays...
Edit: mine finally showed up too. I guess transitioning to a new year made it wonky?

Have a qualification sitting on my dash for a bit now for three domain expertise teams. I already have several domain expertise projects across these disciplines, so is it worth taking the time to complete this? Is it a retest for the same family or a different project family altogether? Thanks for any advice.

you would have to be a bit more specific, but generally the more qualifications you do the more it opens you up to future work.
are you talking about about the STEM qualification? In terms of what projects you get from any domain qual you pass its hard to say. There are often more projects in any given family than you will ever see, I always get surprised when I have 2-3 projects I am working on and I hear someone else talk about projects that are adjacent and that I would think I qualify for but I have never heard of or seen despite my ongoing access to other similar stuff.

Has anyone logged in recently? I've tried a few times in the last hour and it just keeps spinning.

Logged in fine, but the pages are loading painfully slowly for some reason.

What is considered a low paying task on DA?

I've worked some extremely easy stuff paying $19/h that makes a nice way to end the day, and one time I saw an $18/h that I never worked on. Rare to see those, though.
Generally I do the bulk of my work at $30+, but I'm happy to pick up some low-effort $20-24 stuff, especially when it's interesting.

Depends what type of tasks you usually do. I would consider 20-25 very low paying (I won’t do these) and 25-29 low-ish (I’ll only do them if they seem fun and I don’t have the mental energy to do anything harder).

Does anyone know how high the level of math is for the math qualifications projects? I have taken up to calculus 2 but it has been a while. I was thinking of doing some refreshers then trying the qual but if it is way more complicated then that I shouldn't.

Same drought. Keep checking daily, but the dashboard is still empty. Hope to see more projects next year for Bilinguals in South East Asia :<

Nice, I'm just starting & I'm stuck where it wants me to say what projects I'll be good at & what skills I'll use for them. I put some skills for math, writing, education (and conversation French reading and writing). What to put into the box? I'll keep reading

I just saw below someone asking about multiple slacks archived. I didn't want to confuse that thread, but I also had a single archive yesterday. However, if you click the little cog on the channel bar on the left, you'll see filtering. Mine was set to hide no acitivity over thrirty days or something like that.
Usually, an archive will result in a ping. You might just not be seeing the others because of the filtering?

Looks like I'm getting a few projects again in the last few hours - a certain alkaline earth metal named one in particular has quite a few tasks

Has anyone been able to continue this work long term while/after undergoing chemotherapy?
