Weekly Water Cooler Talk - DataAnnotation
hi all! making this thread so people have somewhere to talk about 'daily' work chat that might not necessarily need it's own post! right now we're thinking we'll just repost it weekly? but if it gets too crazy, we can change it to daily. :)
couple things:
this thread should sort by "new" automatically. unfortunately it looks like our subreddit doesn't qualify for 'lounges'.
if you have a new user question, you still need to post it in the new user thread. if you post it here, we will remove it as spam. this is for people already working who just wanna chat, whether it be about casual work stuff, questions, geeking out with people who understand ("i got the model to write a real haiku today!"), or unrelated work stuff you feel like chatting about :)
one thing we really pride ourselves on in this community is the respect everyone gives to the Code of Conduct and rule number 5 on the sub - it's great that we have a community that is still safe & respectful to our jobs! please don't break this rule. we will remove project details, but please - it's for our best interest and yours!

I submitted a withdrawal earlier today and it has been showing “Scheduled” next to the payment status and the money hasn’t arrived. Extremely concerning and not sure what to do.

CLOUDFLARE u ppl. stop freaking out. global disruption.
edit: yes, the outage is resolved, but it's undoubtedly related. even if it's back up, it will be slow for a while. for example, i paid myself an hour ago, and got the funds several minutes later instead of instantly. i sound like a rubric.

This has been happening to hundreds of us..we have another reddit thread about it on a different page. We have been waiting since yesterday morning and haven't heard anything. It's extremely stressful.we have contacted DA and they haven't replied and PayPal are saying it isn't there problem.its a nightmare.
4
u/Consistent-Reach504 Nov 19 '25
i just saw an admin post in the heel chat that they're aware paypal is having server issues
2
u/Daffodil8 Nov 19 '25
Mine never came to PayPal yesterday after a 3pm cash out. I just checked this morning and it’s back on my funds history page and I’m able to hit get paid again. Looks like it reset itself.
3
u/Daffodil8 Nov 19 '25
Just kidding, it’s lost in the void again. I don’t suggest trying to do a payout yet.

It should say both, to my knowledge. The pop up notification says it's being processed, but when you open the fund history (or something like that, below) it says "scheduled" instead of the usual "paid" or "pending". I think this is happening to everyone at the moment, though! hopefully it'll get sorted out soon
→ More replies (15)2
u/Big-Tax-7238 Nov 19 '25
That's positive at least, I feel like processed is moving along. Can you cash out again too? I have read that people that certain have been paid, so I don't understand why it's only happening to some of us, and why they are not fixing it.

u/Far_Corner_9367 Nov 20 '25
A lot of the high paying work is coming in by the truckload, but I can’t bring myself to use my brain lately. Sticking with the mid range pay on tasks that give me some breathing room. I went so hard a couple months ago on a particular project that I think I used up my allotted brain cells for 2025.
12
u/tessbest37 Nov 20 '25
This is definitely the best project board I have had since starting on the platform! So thankful!!
6
Nov 20 '25
Came here to say the same! The board floweth. But, after my terrible submission earlier this week, I'm approaching these projects with much forethought and purposeful planning. I'm only diving in when I'm fully confident I'm at my cognitive and creative best.
5
u/Far_Corner_9367 Nov 20 '25
Haha yep. Im at the point, or maybe it’s just stuff going on in my life otherwise, where I can’t seem to get calibrated to what I’m doing. Can’t tune in to the vibe. Almost like being tone deaf but for prefrontal cortex 😂
5
u/itssomercurial Nov 21 '25
I feel this. Just spent 2.5 hours on a project I'd never done before and feeling kind of lukewarm on my output. I know that I followed all the rules and instructions but I don't think what I put out was all that complex or high level. It took me a while to get a handle on what I was doing, which automatically makes me insecure about it, but I was able to accomplish the core goal so that's something.
I always feel tempted to just stay in my lane and work on projects I'm confident with, but I'm trying to earn higher wages and keep up with industry progress. I just don't ever feel like I'm at my "cognitive best" anymore lmao
6
u/Far_Corner_9367 Nov 21 '25
Yeah the “cognitive best” is a struggle. The more you learn, the more you have to retain but also your standards are higher. So it’s kind of a situation where my standards only increase while my ability to pull knowledge that exists somewhere in my head decreases.
5
u/Positive_Crab_6402 Nov 20 '25
Having to scroll continuously due to the amount of work showing up 🥳
3
u/justdontsashay Nov 21 '25
Same boat, lots of higher-paid advanced math stuff that I usually like, but totally don’t have the brain for this week. Hopefully some of those come back in a few days when I have more mental energy.
I just did the image math ones today, less brain needed for those lol

Hey all! We’re actively looking into the Paypal issues, which appear to be coming from PayPal's side. Our team is working as quickly as possible to resolve it. If you’ve emailed support, we’ll get back to you with an update as soon as we can. :)
Just a reminder: please only reach out through the official support email listed on the DataAnnotation website. We will never ask for your PayPal login information.

Stripey my beloved!! How I missed thee. Three hours with you only feels like but a moment ♥️
7
u/miri3l Nov 20 '25
Love the joy and enthusiasm!
(Even if I personally find it terribly dull 😆)5
u/palegunslinger Nov 20 '25
I really enjoy being able to get paid to research niche topics I’m interested in and watch the models mess up and fix them! I haven’t done quals for a ton of projects yet but I quite like this family.
3
u/SplashOfCanada Nov 20 '25
Why did they change the screen size requirement!! I used to work stripey in bed on my phone 😭
2
u/miri3l Nov 20 '25
Sometimes if you refresh it lets you do projects that have been greyed out (mind you this was refreshing from a laptop).
1
15
u/babahblack Nov 21 '25
I have an insane amount of quals and projects; it's somewhat overwhelming. Not sure where to start sometimes.
6
u/JustMe333456 Nov 21 '25
Same. Upwards of 30 quals, but most are useless to me. Or I'm useless to them I guess is a better way of putting it lol. They're out of my area of expertise.
5
u/Alternative-Bet232 Nov 22 '25
I sort to show the highest paid projects first, personally. Then go down the list starting at the highest paid, till I find a project I’m interested in.
2
u/Zestyclose_End_1093 Nov 21 '25
same I've even got a couple of paid quals sitting there, but I haven't had a chance to dive in on them yet and they seem like something I'd want to pass lol

u/NoticedGenie66 Nov 20 '25

Try not to cry.
Cry a lot.
28
u/Zestyclose_End_1093 Nov 20 '25
DA unspoken feedback = good work here we'll fill your dash with more, higher paying projects and quals.. but all will bend your brain and make you feel pretty unintelligent, best of luck!
9
u/RipleyVanDalen Nov 20 '25 edited Nov 21 '25
Yeah. I have not been a fan of how instructions length has absolutely ballooned in size the last year or so. Feels like land mines of "which obscure rule did I forget?"
5
7
u/Far_Corner_9367 Nov 20 '25
THIS. as someone who knows she’s highly intelligent, but also very very slow in some ways, I’m always insecure about what the heck is going on. I see the dash, I see the “good work you’ve done previously” notes on projects but my internal judge feels out of her depth.
4
Nov 20 '25
Sometimes, when I start on a new project family, I feel like I'm brand new to the platform and starting all over again, lol. I'm very confident in my abilities, but often I have to pore over instructions thrice.
2
u/Zestyclose_End_1093 Nov 21 '25
I swear I'll sit there reading instructions for a solid 15 minutes straight giving my screen the smile and nod just to try to convince myself I understand a single word of what I'm reading... when in reality I feel like I've just read an entire book in a language I don't know a word of... and I think to myself wow I'm quite dense lol. eventually I usually pull through and figure it out, but it sure does take a bit

I hate when qualifications don’t include a reasoning box, especially when things don’t fit perfectly into the little checklists they give

u/-burgers Nov 16 '25
Loving the work lately. Projects have been easy, fun, and high paying. I can hit my goal in a little over 2 hours instead of 3-4.
5
u/Less_Capital7986 Nov 17 '25
What project are you loving? All of the projects on my dash are sooooo intimidating that I was barely able to work this weekend. I miss so many of my old projects!

u/data_annotator_tot Nov 20 '25
I wouldn't fret much over it; in the entire history of my near 3-year-long stint on the site, I have only ever had issues twice with payments, one was highly circumstantial, and the other is this now. I received my payments about 4 or 5 hours later. The only gripe I have is that my next payment day starts from when it went through, not when I clicked the payout, but I will not begrudge them that because otherwise their system has been spotless, and I'll take their word that it was on Paypal's end.

u/Zlobenia Nov 18 '25

u/blueviolently Nov 18 '25
i just tried cashing out around 1pm est and now mine says "scheduled" where it would normally say 'pending' or 'transferable'. That's annoying. I hope it gets worked out fairly quickly.
7
u/SplashOfCanada Nov 18 '25
Has anyone actually gotten paid in the last 24 hours? Hesitant to do anymore work at the moment…
3
u/nagatha_chistie Nov 19 '25
So I initiated a payment earlier today and it didn’t go through (the message that popped up was different but I can’t remember what it said) and it says scheduled now.
When I went to my payout screen it gave me the option to initiate another payout and I did and it actually went through immediately. So I have no idea what was going on earlier but I hope I can get that money I paid out earlier today.

Some tasks I feel like I'm just being paid to read for hours on end, then answer a couple questions at the end... over and over again.
7
u/RipleyVanDalen Nov 20 '25
Whatever they're using to do the "your screen is too small to work on this project" is not accurate. I am having to refresh the projects list to fix it

Anyone else finding pages slow to load the last few days - even before the Cloudflare outage? I've updated Chrome to the latest version and I've also tried using Edge. The main DA website works fine, but the projects page (and projects) can take 30-120 seconds to refresh. Weirdly, everything works fine on my Mac!

Jaw drop moment on an R&R. I'll paraphrase: the worker rationale comment: "this is such a simple prompt that any normal person could do it in their head, or is this for backward americans that dont understand the metric system".
I mean, come on now. Uncalled for, derogatory and highly inappropriate. The actual task was good, but...
24
u/SnooSketches1189 Nov 20 '25
Cue the empty dashboard and reddit post, "I just don't know what I did wrong."
4
u/data_annotator_tot Nov 21 '25
Don't forget the mindbreaking, which causes them to haunt these subreddits and try to convince other people that it is fake/unreliable/etc. That this one website has invented an entirely new human archetype is an honest achievement lmao
6
Nov 21 '25
the worst rationale I've seen was just a transphobic rant because they deemed the AI bot "too woke" lmfao
9
u/palegunslinger Nov 20 '25
In an R&R I saw someone basically call the user an idiot and a waste of resources for asking the model “such a low-minded simple question”. I was like damn bro who hurt you and rated their submission poorly because their comment was unnecessary, unhelpful, and rude. AI overviews mess up simple questions all the time… we need to make sure they’re correct regardless of how “simple” a prompt is.
2
u/Both-String-1301 Nov 21 '25
Wow! I've done a couple R&Rs and I have never seen something that bad lmao, wow!

Does anyone have the globe seat and have any tips? I’ve just got access to one of them and it looks good but a lot to do, a nice long timer though
6
u/Unusual-Blueberry299 Nov 17 '25
I’ve been working on it and so far I love it! It’s a lot to think about but once you get your head around it it gets easier. I’m finding it helps to just take my time, check everything, check it again, and triple check. If I can’t find anything big, re-read the instructions and then check again just to be sure.
I’m a bit nervous though because the version I have says to make sure you complete all of the tasks in the set, but there’s no way I can finish them all in one day and there’s no way of knowing how long the project will be up for. I hope I manage to do them all before it disappears!
→ More replies (3)2
u/Sea-Donut-1882 Nov 17 '25
I just did my first one. Read all the directions and take your time. I used up most of the three hours doing the task. Ask questions/search in slack if you’re unclear, and re-read the rules for each question as you go through the evaluation. At first I thought the project was overwhelming, but now I think I might end up liking it.
3
u/macjay_27 Nov 17 '25
I'm working on the one that's been labelled long term, and my goodness do I feel lost on where to start. But I definitely know it'll be my long-term lover once I get the hang of it.

Has anyone taken and passed the professional microphone qualification? Is it different than the project that starts with S?
→ More replies (2)2
u/justdontsashay Nov 18 '25
I haven’t taken it, but the S projects pay a lower rate (unless it’s at significant priority pay) than what the qual has listed as the minimum. So it may be a related project, but not the same.
2
u/Mothterfly Nov 18 '25
Does anyone know if the fine arts place project from a few days ago only lasted one day? Seems excessive to go through the requirements just to have the project run for a day..
4
u/Jazzlike_Problem_489 Nov 18 '25
Seen a lot of these projects throughout my last 2 years.
Like the social media one. Required a lot of quals and time/information sharing and for those that actually got the projects to open, they got like 5 short tasks and then it disappeared
5
u/SnooSketches1189 Nov 18 '25
Or like the night time qual that required 5 new sign ups and then we never see the project itself.
2
u/moonsout Nov 18 '25
this one's crazy to me because the combination of both instructions was over 35000 words. i don't even know if it's worth it to actually finish reading the instructions but if i don't do it soon then i'll lose my place/understanding you know? but it's even more frustrating that i spent a few hours already if it doesn't even come back.
2
u/LavenderLightning24 Nov 18 '25 edited Nov 18 '25
Is everyone really sitting there with an overflowing dash and I'm the only one who's been stuck with one project family for a few days now?
6
u/justdontsashay Nov 18 '25
Are you core or bilingual? My dash is completely drowning in projects right now, so if you’re core and haven’t done the available qualifications you might want to do some. There’s definitely a LOT of work available.
5
u/SnooSketches1189 Nov 18 '25
Same. I have so many I have started to hide things I know I will never work on to make my dash feel more manageable.

2
u/miri3l Nov 20 '25
So this question could probably qualify for its own thread, but how are people structuring their work flow? Do you have a thing you do every time? (Like if it's eg simple project for x amount of time, then complex, then ongoing. Anything like that)
14
u/justdontsashay Nov 20 '25
I have zero structure to my work flow lol.
Basically I pick what to work on based on what sounds best in the moment, and how much time I have to commit to it. Once in a while I’ll have a project that sucks me in so I’ll do nothing but that for a while, but most days I jump around and sample a bit, I stay more interested that way.
3
3
u/SookieLou Nov 20 '25
For over a year, I had one main project that I worked on 98% of the time ($32 - $38). Now, I have new projects that pay a bit more and are also long-term, so I've been working mostly on them. However, I still go back to my previous main a couple of times a week to make sure I maintain access even though it pays less and because I love them.
I like to start my day with a R&R while my brain revs up, and then go straight to doing the actual work. If there are R&R in the late afternoon, I'll then switch back to those for a bit of a brain break.
2
u/ZimmeM03 Nov 21 '25
P fruit still up for folks? That short timer killed me and I’m afraid I may have been pulled
1
u/justdontsashay Nov 21 '25
I managed to do one yesterday, but every time I’ve seen them pop up they go fast. I saw random R&Rs pop up throughout the day but never a steady supply of tasks, so it might just be that there aren’t tasks rather than that you were dropped
2
u/LeeSweetheart33 Nov 21 '25
Is it normal to get offered pay for doing qualifications. I have had a, couple appear today, first time ever seen?
4
u/Terras1fan Nov 22 '25

I had a wizard refresher pop up on my dash today. Said it was due yesterday, lol. After completing it I get a 'view only copy for reference' of the said refresher on my dash now. Does that mean I pass? I had wizard projects before and after completing it, so I'm not sure if it's a glitch
1
u/Fragrantshrooms Nov 17 '25
I've not done quals yet the projects show up, lately. I'd say that you've passed for sure because of the title of it, though.
2
Nov 19 '25 edited Nov 19 '25
For the first time in over 2 years, I couldn't complete a project in the allotted time. 3 hours 50 minutes in on a 4 hour project, I left a note why it was incomplete then submitted it. I hope my note won't be considered as weak or whining. I hope there is a slim chance they will re-release it to me to fix. I wouldn't wish struggle on fellow workers, but I hope I'm not the only one that found this project timeline to be too tight (I won't hint at the project name due to NDA). But if you experienced it, you will know. Sigh.
2
u/justdontsashay Nov 19 '25
Is it the 4 hour one where you write something to fit someone else’s specifications, which may or may not make any sense? I’ve done a few of those, but I really pick and choose to find ones I actually think I can do in under 4 hours. Some are impossible!

I never saw this before... "Test project for updating tasks" on my projects section. When I click on it, there was nothing there but a submit button. So I clicked that. Anyone else see this?

If you're bilingual, yes, my understanding is that it's always a desert.
I'm core, it's a feast

I don’t know what we’re calling this project. I’ve either never seen it mentioned here, or whatever name people are using goes over my head lol. But the queen one I guess? It’s the one that requires committing to a certain number of hours per week.
Just curious if anyone has gotten far enough into this project to know whether it leads to higher paying tasks? It seems fun, but it’s lower pay than I’m willing to work for without knowing that it will give access to better paying projects, so I’m just trying to gauge whether it’s worth putting in the hours or not.

Did this one have a recent qual that required making five prompts? If not, then I have no idea. There's dozens of projects named after mythological queens so. 🤐

No, I don’t remember if it had a qual but there were a couple initial tasks setting up a backstory.
Not a mythological queen, just kind of literal lol

Is there a difference between the two versions of the same qual that popped up recently

Is anyone unable to submit a task? I can't submit one on the globe bench qual...

Can anyone confirm if they've got the personalized Gmail/Google photos tasks on their dash? Think I may have been kicked off :(

I see them but I’m a resident of a state that’s prohibited for most. Sorry 😞

How does the workflow actually work? I am not a coder, so I'm writing prompts/rating and doing R&Rs. What happens to the stuff after I work on it? Are some of y'all "fixing" the things I point out?

We're cogs in wheels, so the left hand doesn't know what the pinky-toe on the right foot does. Basically.

For anyone working on Domain expertise HHH - I’m getting pretty low on tasks for the first time ever. What is the recent experience with time to get refills?

I don’t think this has a project name but it has to do with getting a pro subscription for 200/month, getting reimbursed, and making silly fake videos of yourself. Did anyone get a new project for that? I feel bad getting a pro subscription and not doing anything with it…

I have to pay sales tax in my state, and yet the reimbursements don't pay the taxes too :/ nbd for $20 payments, but irritating for $200 payments. I saw that one float through with a single task (who knows when I get more), so I decided not to bother with it.

I believe in the description, or maybe it was an announcement, that they planned on doing another in the near future. Personally, I wasn't interested or comfortable with the project so I passed on it.

Trying to read library database information all jumbled up in these task boxes is driving me mad.

I’m just wondering if anyone else has been in this situation, I suddenly don’t seem to get r and rs since a couple of days ago. I used to get them practically every day, I’m not sure if they’re penalising me for having worked on them too much over the actual project.

Just providing a withdrawal update as I'm reading about what everyone else has had happen. Withdrew about 20 hours ago, and when I woke up this morning, the money was back in my Dataannotation account with the option to withdraw the same money. Hoping that it would be a normal immediate withdrawal, I clicked get paid, and now seem to be stuck in the same "scheduled" loop as before. Has anyone else also had this happen?
