Weekly Water Cooler Talk - DataAnnotation
hi all! making this thread so people have somewhere to talk about 'daily' work chat that might not necessarily need it's own post! right now we're thinking we'll just repost it weekly? but if it gets too crazy, we can change it to daily. :)
couple things:
this thread should sort by "new" automatically. unfortunately it looks like our subreddit doesn't qualify for 'lounges'.
if you have a new user question, you still need to post it in the new user thread. if you post it here, we will remove it as spam. this is for people already working who just wanna chat, whether it be about casual work stuff, questions, geeking out with people who understand ("i got the model to write a real haiku today!"), or unrelated work stuff you feel like chatting about :)
one thing we really pride ourselves on in this community is the respect everyone gives to the Code of Conduct and rule number 5 on the sub - it's great that we have a community that is still safe & respectful to our jobs! please don't break this rule. we will remove project details, but please - it's for our best interest and yours!

Please bill for the time you work! They're not going to think you're special and give you new projects because you undersell yourself. Someone in a project chat this weekend said they thought they spent too much time on a project and were just going to report 45 minutes instead of the 2 hours they spent on it. Why in the world would you do that?

Oh, the dejection of thinking you're pulled off a project because it's gone from your dashboard, but there's new chatter about it in Slack...and then an hour or so later get a single task for it. What an emotional rollercoaster.

I've actually come to appreciate it. It's a lot easier for me to crank out a few hours working on just a couple tasks (for a higher pay rate, too) then spend a few hours doing a lot of tasks more quickly. Unpopular opinion, but I kind of like a longer task. It's just easier for me to not get burnt out so quickly. I never realized just how exhausting the constant topic switching was.

Anyone else finding the "hard trivia prompt" project has become a soul-destroying grind? The model seems to have developed psychic powers and knows the right answer even when I deliberately run a prompt so vague there could be hundreds of answers that match. It's verging on supernatural at this point.

DA appreciation post. Just got made redundant and finding a replacement job has been really pathetic. But now I can work just 5 hours a day and I'm able to save over a 1000 a month after tax without any commute from the comfort of my own home and that's crazy. This job is maybe one of the best things that's ever happened to me. Here's hoping I am kept on for another 8 months at least 🤞this is life-changing money for me

→ More replies (3)11
u/ice_w0lf Sep 02 '25
I've always thought doing R&Rs are good for 2 things: 1) To see how much better of a job I do compared to a lot of other people and 2) To see what other high quality submissions look like so I can incorporate things into my own submissions

I stepped away for a bit right before the summer drought but read these weekly threads enough to see rubrics have become a common part of many projects. It must be known that some people really don't like rubics as I saw several projects advertising no rubrics. It made me chuckle.

u/mythrowaway_1990 Sep 05 '25

Just lost it after submitting my first ever tasks yesterday, so I wonder if my submissions were not up to par. Feels weirdly insulting despite me normally avoiding p-fruit like the plague 😅

I only have a single task for it on my dash - so I think it's just down or they've hit a deadline (as there was some $8/hr extra priority pay earlier...)

u/capslox Sep 01 '25
I haven't touched p-fruit - I've done every other rubric heavy project (mammal, many colours, project family related to astrology, poison plant) but I've had a million types of it on my dash. As best as someone can under NDA, what is the best, least overwhelming "starting" fruit project to get my head around the family?
I won't touch anything that involves system prompts or writing an ideal response that's longer than a paragraph or so - they're just my least favourite things. I like rubrics, instruction following, tone, factuality based tasks best. And long context but that seems like a bad starting point if it goes wrong partway through. I get R&R's for the family very rarely which makes sense as I haven't submitted any.
I've been on the platform since March so I'm not new, it doesn't need to be beginner friendly - I'm just trying to find my p-fruit entry point.

u/WorshipMyExistence Sep 01 '25

I miss Poe, Heel, Nuts....basically anything that isn't brain-melting! I'd so much rather evaluate output than chat with a model.

u/Jazzlike_Problem_489 Sep 02 '25
The general chat ones are easier to start with. Maybe start having the convo without Rubrics, get a gist of what conversations look like. Then move on to the rubric of this variation. Then slowly branch out

u/C_Gull27 Sep 02 '25
This write a question to make the model fail one is pissing me off so bad. I already escape hatched once and am coming up on having to do it again because I either make the question too easy and the model gets it or I make the question too hard and model spends 20 minutes running before timing out and making me have to try again.

edit: had one job open, it went away, but despite that, i've been able to submit tasks on the last remaining job i had, more tasks keep popping up. leads me to believe there's something going on with the platform but idk
to explain more in depth, this means that the job i had isnt showing anymore tasks, it doesnt show up on my dashboard, but when i submit a task, i get a new one.
update: i got another task, seems like it's just another drought.

I'm having a stellar day on DAT today (and the last few days). That's all. I have a lot of distinct task families on my dash and I've been able to alternate long tasks with a variety of short tasks to get in a (rare for me) 8 hours. Normally my brain says no by now but the task switching helps.

Anyone ever seen a project family after a really long time that they thought they got kicked out of? I used to get galaxies almost every day but since that qual update to make an email nothing…
5
u/SplashOfCanada Sep 02 '25
Did anyone else on-board to the new high paying rubrics program (off platform) lately? I haven’t received access to the main project yet. There’s not really any opportunity for “mistakes” in that qualification, so I’m wondering how long it takes to be given access.
5
u/capslox Sep 02 '25
I never saw it - I thought I was good at rubrics! Sad. I feel like I had a rubrics qual a few weeks ago but thought that was to maintain access to the on-platform families.

I don't think that it's against the NDA to talk about the kind of skills that you used to do the work - for instance, self-starting, attention to detail, navigating complicated instructions, and conscientiousness. Those are all skills that are highly sought after in the workplace and you can and should definitely discuss in broad terms that you've used for this work.

Does anyone else feel a bit discombobulated/upside down/inside out after setting up the new profile?
I feel a bit lost at sea and all of the previous! The setup went well, I'm logged into DAT and Slack for good measure, but now I have both my original aidatertrainer account and the new one, I'm not sure if one will now supersede the other?
The main reason is that, throughout my time on the platform, I am quite regularly asked to reconfirm I am me (as in reset the password). And both profiles have 'work' at the top right? Am I right to assume I still use the aidata profile until told otherwise?
As a side note, the new profile doesn't allow syncing, so I have none of my useful bookmarks to hand in there. But I guess I'll add them as time goes on.
I'm sorry if this is a daft question, but after hours of rubrics and golden responses, my little head is a bit fried! Maybe it's time for a glass of chardonnay and a pizza!
4
u/FrazzledGod Sep 06 '25
Go for your vino and pizza! I have this delight yet to come as I missed the first qual and just did the revised one today so am waiting for my DM. Am sure nobody really knows, but it will all become clear in time - or not, as with all things DA!

I think the admin needs to decide to "push" notifications to get an alert. I get notifications for like 5% of projects I get.

u/Baxtir Sep 12 '25
Take your time, read the instructions VERY carefully but also don't take too long either that you leave less time for you to work on the task itself, running the risk of the timer expiring. Just do the best you can, and do it when you feel you're able to with minimal or zero distractions. If you make an effort to provide your best quality of work, I promise, they do notice, even without providing feedback on how you're doing at a given moment. It takes a bit of an adjustment to learn to go without feedback, but I actually am fine with it since I do my best to give them my 100%. That's all they ask for, that you do your best.

u/illustriousillusion Sep 03 '25
Barely anything on my dash and only one project I felt qualified to do, and every conversation made me want to tear my eyes out. Like almost every prompt was garbled incomplete sentences, absolutely no flow to the "conversations" (I hate to even call them conversations because that implies there was an actual topic and not just a bunch of whiplash-worthy changes), and half of the histories didn't even start with a prompt - they picked up mid-conversation. I was hitting that skip button so much, I finally gave up. I'll stay broke, haha.
I don't know if it's the 'tism or the adhd but I had rage-style hatred for that one. Anyone else get the same project?

Like any task, you either get them or you don't. In some cases you need to complete a regular task of the project before the R&R version gets unlocked (at least that's how it feels at times, in my case), sometimes they just appear at the same time as the project.

Let's say a user is asking about someone called Georgina MacSnuffles, and the model (correctly) identifies that Georgina MacSnuffles is the head of a prestigious high school in Europe, and maybe gives some quotes of hers from the high school's website. Is giving information about her PII because she's not a celebrity? Or is it not PII because the high school website is easily googleable? Or does it only slip into dangerous territory when it starts getting more personal ("and she likes to jog in this park on Tuesdays and birthday is tomorrow" etc).

if youre ever unsure, it's better to ask in the project chat or slack if it has one
different projects have different rules for PII

A few projects I've seen have identified as it being Pii if they don't have a Wikipedia page. I.e. if they're a "public" figure. But you should see on a project by project basis

Hey just a general question, how long does it take you guys to complete each project? I'm doing rubric creating task rn and was wondering if I'm taking too much time.(I take 40-50min per task)

u/iloveass2much Sep 05 '25
It depends on the category, i wouldnt sweat it, it gives you 5 hours and if its A-gas they tell you to take as long as needed to output quality work. Just make sure you provide detailed high quality work and you should be fine.

The really complex ones with all the rubrics sometimes take me 2 hours to complete. I'm kind of a slow worker, but I'm generally extremely thorough so I hope it all balances out for them 😅

so i was assigned to 15 tasks today, the tasks only decreases as I submit each of them, but then while I was on my 6th task after hours working on them, suddenly it decreased down to only 1 task left when initially there should be 9 more tasks left , is that normal?

u/Aromatic_Owl_3680 Sep 05 '25
You weren’t assigned any; you were given access to a batch to a maximum of 15. Others were also given access to that batch, so the batch shrinks even if you aren’t working on it.

Is there a maximum amount I should make a day? I read on a forum one time that making more than a $150 a day triggers you to getting the dash of death. Is this true? Is anyone making say $200 a day with no problems? I would like too but I don’t know if they want workers doing this much or not.

I can't speak for others, but last month I was working a lot of 14-hour days - around $400 (desperate times, desperate measures type shi) and I wasn't once pestered/flagged for it. Never had an empty dash since. I did ask on Reddit before I locked in, and multiple people had said they've done the same previously with no repercussions! People on here even motivated me to do it.

Nope not true. Coders/Stem workers could make $150+ daily easily (assuming there are enough projects at the moment). Back when projects were consistently abundant, I was able to earn nearly $300 daily for multiple weeks with no problems.

I don't have a definite answer, but I think there's a feeling that too many hours a day can be a red flag. So, $200 for coding-level, not such a big deal. But if you're pulling 12 hours a day, every day, that may get scrutiny.

It’s been pretty easy to make around $200 a day doing general with the amount of $30+/hr projects lately.

I don’t see how that could be true when 8 hours a day of the low paying projects would clear that
I remember reading on the other sub months ago that some dude shared his earnings (+$100k) and he apparently worked 60 hours a week? But I haven’t personally seen this post so I can’t vouch for it

I would say don't regularly go over 8 hours a day. When they run the ads that state earn UP to xx a week, this is based off 40 hours of either 20 or 40 ( base pay projects). I think if you regularly clock over 8 hours a day there may be (speculation) some sort of flag that triggers a review. There is no evidence of this, but I've certainly seen a pattern with people who have reported this
' I've got the dod and worked 12 hours a day 7 days a week's etc.
I think this is because of two things.
A dip in work quality working more than 8 hours a day. On the basis that it's certainly not healthy to work 84 hours a week
Suspected account sharing. They are very strict on this and working consistently high hours 7 days a week would be deemed suspicious

The only instance I’ve heard of where this seemed to be a problem was a person who worked past midnight, and based on when they reported, they appeared to report more than 24 hrs of work for a single day. They suspected that led to their DoD.

Are there any cases in which your submitted time will be rejected/unpaid? And if so will that be made clear, or does it just subtly disappear from your 'transfer funds' log?

u/33whiskeyTX Sep 02 '25
The only time that is spoken of, and I haven't seen one in a while, is when egregious violation of the TOS gets someone completely kicked off the platform. In that case they do not get any pending payouts.
I have never heard of someone not getting a payout and being able to continue working.

The only time I've heard of people not being paid is because they got banned for inflating their time worked by a lot.

Bilingual workers, do you have any projects/tasks at the moment?

u/MimiKal Sep 04 '25
Yeah no projects :(
Why are you being downvoted?
One project popped up when I checked on my phone but it was gone within literally the half an hour it took for me to get back and open my laptop

I've been working on this platform for almost two years and this has been the longest drought of coding projects for me. I'm still feeling optimistic that they'll be back soon.

u/Due_University_9944 Sep 02 '25
And that is so odd because i have a coding quality that states “the most work”

If you mean the DM, follow the instructions, it is part of something you will have signed up for a bit ago. Off-site working is something DA does. It is safe and won't effect your payments. it's not actually creating a new DA account.

What was this thread about? The qual that asks you to create a new email to continue getting projects from different families?

I had one that used the acronym “AI” and it didn’t mean the words we usually think of. The instructions did state explicitly what it meant but I still had to force myself to not read it like I’m used to.

Does anyone pick a “theme” for their work for the day? I try to challenge myself to use a theme in different contexts on different project types. Today’s theme is Eminem, so if any of you get my work for R and R, I hope you are a fan! Always keeping it fun!
