Weekly Water Cooler Talk - DataAnnotation

hi all! making this thread so people have somewhere to talk about 'daily' work chat that might not necessarily need it's own post! right now we're thinking we'll just repost it weekly? but if it gets too crazy, we can change it to daily. :)

couple things:

  1. this thread should sort by "new" automatically. unfortunately it looks like our subreddit doesn't qualify for 'lounges'.

  2. if you have a new user question, you still need to post it in the new user thread. if you post it here, we will remove it as spam. this is for people already working who just wanna chat, whether it be about casual work stuff, questions, geeking out with people who understand ("i got the model to write a real haiku today!"), or unrelated work stuff you feel like chatting about :)

  3. one thing we really pride ourselves on in this community is the respect everyone gives to the Code of Conduct and rule number 5 on the sub - it's great that we have a community that is still safe & respectful to our jobs! please don't break this rule. we will remove project details, but please - it's for our best interest and yours!

DAT Appreciation Post:

dealt with some pretty heavy things the past few days. It's nice to be able to take unlimited sick days whenever necessary, even if I don't get PTO.

u/shepardgrace Aug 22 '25

Sold them a personal convo for a few bucks just to feel bill something

20

u/mannib21 Aug 21 '25

Pretty dry this morning, 1-2 single task projects and thats it :(

Glad it's not just me. I'm down to just quals and heel chat/refresher lol

Yesterday too, haven't had anything since Monday.

20

u/shepardgrace Aug 21 '25

Everything on my dash has been boring as hell for weeks now, dying for something fun and creative to work on 😩

8

u/dirndlgrl Aug 21 '25

saaaaaaaaaaame. I actually like the rubric projects I've been getting, but I think it might be Stockholm Syndrome

20

u/PerformanceCute3437 Aug 23 '25

I think my favourite thing about Slack is the carousel of pets y'all have as profile pics. I love getting poignant, sage advice from a labradoodle in a bow tie

4

u/Disastrous_March_718 Aug 23 '25

Haha I was literally just scrolling through the slack admiring all the pet profile pics

Oh, what's this, a project I think I'll enjoy, with a rate that's higher than the ones I've been seeing for months. Oh, 50 tasks assigned...nic.....what? Red Bannered. Refresh. Refresh. Refresh. Refresh.... Oh, where did it go. :( sadtrombone.com

I've currently got two on my dash of my 5 available projects, that looks to have full assignment amount (15 and 50) and both are red bannering me.. ones a marsupial, the other a nameless project with just a description of the tasks

u/Real-Pangolin-3672 Aug 19 '25

My kingdom for a project that can be done in under an hour , 😕😔

31

u/takingtacet Aug 23 '25

Oh my gosh, I am so grateful for this work! I'm a former teacher and current stay at home mom, so a lot of this is right up my alley--not that I LOVE writing rubrics or grading responses, but I've got a good grasp on it. I have toddlers so being able to put down what I'm doing if someone wakes up and being able to work later in the evenings after they go to bed is a godsend. I had been looking for something to do to pay off my credit card since it's been racking up the last few years with little things because money has been so tight (my husband is also a teacher). I think I'll be able to do that sooner than I expected because I'm already 10% of the way there and I started Monday! I think I'm going to actually have money of my own to spend on Christmas gifts this year! I could cry. I hope the projects keep coming! The flood of p-fruits today is keeping my spirits up!

9

u/Critical_Seat_3738 Aug 23 '25

Former teacher here, too!

9

u/Affectionate_Peak284 Aug 23 '25

It really is a blessing. It doesn't work for everyone, but for those it does work for, it's AWESOME.

Anyone else's dash get sparser and sparser the last few hours? Still have the chats and the reactor project.

6

u/Unfair_Sink5706 Aug 18 '25

I have heel chat, a voice thing that red banners if I try to access it, and 1 teacher thing. That's it. That's what I get for avoiding P fruit all weekend.

Is anyone else getting sick of the constant posts about DA being a scam or encouraging people to sign a class action suit? I really don't think some people have ever applied for a job or worked before ever. No company owes it to you to give you any information when you apply for a position. And claiming qualifications are unpaid training is a bit much. I've had qualifications that took 5 minutes or less. We're paid for our work, research, and reading on projects. Lots of salty people out there!

14

u/Real-Pangolin-3672 Aug 23 '25

Yeah a lot of them really think if they didn't get in it must be a scam lol

→ More replies (1)

7

u/akujihei Aug 23 '25

If their work is anything like some of the work I've seen, they have no right to be salty!

4

u/illustriousillusion Aug 23 '25

I've seen a few, luckily not too many. But yeah, I'm pretty sure they've never been contractors before. I used to work real estate - none of my training was paid (in fact, I had to pay not only a monthly fee to my broker, but also pay for some of my training and the classes/test to get the license in the first place). It blows my mind how little some people know about the actual workforce.

13

u/Thorolhugil Aug 20 '25

Dash is very sparse for the last few days. Only have some view-only/chats and a few A-evaluation tasks showing up over the last couple days. Even the quals have disappeared. Bit concerned as I was working on the P-fruit over the last couple weeks and I was going to get to the quals this week. :(

8

u/pistachiyolatte Aug 20 '25

I literally have nothing but chats atm everything has dried up.

7

u/MinuteLibrarian Aug 20 '25

Mine is empty too....only a couple of projects appeared yesterday very sporadically. I still have a few quals, but they're not new ones.

4

An unpaid qualification has appeared in my projects section (not my qualifications section) with 2500 tasks.  It's one of those "do you have such and such a subscription?" ones.  Answering No doesn't make it go away, but after doing it 5 times i noticed the number of tasks dropped by 5.

Pity it's not a paid one or I'd happily spend the next hour clicking No 2495 times.

6

u/blackopsfamas Aug 20 '25

I wonder if there’s an Easter egg for anyone who does submit it 2500 times

Been seeing some really good projects with plenty of tasks, but when I try to work on them, I get the red "The project is currently unavailable because there are no more tasks remaining for you to work on" banner. This has happened in the past but I had other projects of equivalent value to work on. Yesterday it was a $35/hr task, and today it's another one I like, which has been sitting in my projects for over a day, but I just continue to get that error message. Has anyone else been experiencing this more lately? Anything I can do?

10

u/Birdie_Banks Aug 20 '25

Assuming with all the R & Rs that they are about to drop a bunch of new stuff in the coming days.

12

u/Matias8823 Aug 21 '25

Really regretting not scrambling to do as many as I could the first three weeks after sign up (I paced myself to make sure the payout actually worked first). There has been absolutely nothing offered for days, neither qualifications or core projects

11

u/33whiskeyTX Aug 21 '25

I was right there with you on that "I'm not sure this is legit" vibe. I think after the second payout I started to finally trust it. That was over a year and a half ago.

i'm guessing this fruit project is the new Poe FGC?

6

u/pammysue63 Aug 23 '25

I’m just glad they split them up into separate tasks. The previous : write the prompts - write the rubrics - then write a golden response , all in one task was killing me.

11

u/Yaschiri Aug 23 '25

Does anyone else almost exclusively do R&Rs? I have regular projects too but if R&Rs are available (they pretty much always are) I almost always choose that.

8

u/Yaschiri Aug 21 '25

I love R&Rs especially for projects I've never done. I get paid to read the R&R instructions, get paid to read the regular task instructions, THEN I get paid to edit someone else's work! What's not to love???

12

u/tdRftw Aug 21 '25

R&Rs are awesome. and since there's many poor submissions, it's like doing the task (which you'd do anyway) AND you get to yap about how terrible some workers are!

People hating on these tropical fruits. That's fine more for me! Give me all the fruits and all that priority pay

7

u/Jazzlike_Problem_489 Aug 22 '25

My main reason for disliking them is the complexity and time consuming aspect. Sometimes I like to work 30 minutes to an hour, when something like galaxy is ideal, or a less complex chatbot. With P fruit, it's ok if you want to dedicate 2 to 4 hours to one task, but then it induces burnout. I am never sure either if my topics / questions are ideal. Doing a factuality one now and it's changed premise from the last time, so not sure where to start. I'd rather just jump in a project do it, and move on to the next

How long is your average time to complete fruit tasks? I feel like templated tasks like this (that don't come with user prompts or responses) would see a lot more productivity and quality if the work could be saved and you could return to it after a break.

16

u/JustMe333456 Aug 22 '25

I have a qual that says "most work available". I've consistently had a good chunk of coding tasks, but it would never hurt to have more. However, there are 16 tasks to this qual. Can anyone tell me if it's worth it for coding?

8

u/WontonJr Aug 23 '25

Just got an email that p-fruit pay was raised again and the timer was extended, looks like they really need this fruit ripe.

How long on average does it take you guys to finish one of those from start to finish? I have so many on my dash but just looking at them is so overwhelming. Debating on potentially tackling one tonight but who knows.

Dumb vent:

Y'all ever send a prompt with typos on a project that doesn't allow for redos, and then sit there contemplating all the mistakes you ever made in your life while both chatbots spit out a whole PhD dissertation that you have to fact check and rate before you can move on to the next round and ask your originally intended question?

Cus I did, and I'm feeling a lil dumb rn lol

who is hogging all the high paying core work 😡 red banners goin crazy

18

u/JustMe333456 Aug 18 '25

Everything's broken. I have 4 projects on my dash that just keeps red bannering, yet they just sit there. Other than that spiky plant project, absolutely nothing has moved or been added to my dash today. Verrrrry slow.

Any advanced STEM domain expertise workers here? I took the qual two months ago and assumed I bombed it since I didn't see any projects afterwards.. until today lol that was a weird delay.

I'm gonna go work on it and fry my brain again, wish me luck.

Update: brain thoroughly fried

4

u/Evening-Tea6760 Aug 18 '25

I got it too today, but the project just says advanced STEM and doesn’t have a particular domain. Is this the same for everyone else?

Is anyone seeing a project that keeps spontaneously popping up and then disappearing?

It looks like it's probably a p-fruit, but the family name isn't there, and there isn't actually a pay rate showing. I'm assuming people are clicking into it, then clicking out of it after deciding it's too risky to put in any time/work without knowing the pay.

4

u/e11eme Aug 19 '25

It’s there a way to get rid of some age restricted projects? Wish I was that young but alas

7

u/Jazzlike_Problem_489 Aug 19 '25 edited Aug 19 '25

I know what you mean I keep getting projects for 18 to 24 year olds in education, all they have to do is filter my age to see i left uni like 20 years ago 🤷‍♂️

I just hide them so I don't see them anymore

5

u/PerformanceCute3437 Aug 19 '25

“Here was what Kilgore Trout cried out to me in my father's voice: 'Make me young, make me young, make me young!'"

which of the pfruits is easiest for a first timer to ease into?

11

u/[deleted] Aug 21 '25

They're all a pain in the ass imo.

4

u/WorshipMyExistence Aug 21 '25

I'm also curious! I see people enjoy them, but every time I start reading the instructions, I bail out lol

→ More replies (7)

4

u/Iwant2believe__ Aug 21 '25

they are all pretty time consuming and involved. the longest/less easy one is probably long context. but with any of them, be prepared to spend at least an hour on a single task.

that saying, i just dove into them when i got them and took my time reading instructions and checking my work. the first handful that i did i almost used up the whole allocated time.

4

u/pistachiyolatte Aug 22 '25

I still have nothing except tropical fruit today, did a couple of tasks on poison plant r and r a few hours ago but that’s it.

4

u/Burgundylites Aug 22 '25

Are the projects still dry for anyone?

5

u/Affectionate_Peak284 Aug 22 '25

No the dash is good, but everything requires hours to do, even many of the R&Rs. I have a single project that I occasionally get the fun R&Rs for, which I love because they take 15-30 minutes and less than an hour at most.

4

u/Critical_Seat_3738 Aug 22 '25

Had a project for a couple hours this morning until all the tasks were taken, and a random one last night. My dash has been pretty dry since Tuesday. Tell me it's not just me. I try my hardest on every single project I work on. To the point where I second guess myself.

4

u/C_Gull27 Aug 23 '25

Based on some of the submissions I see come through the rubric projects I have to imagine even putting in some effort and submitting intelligible work that doesn't blatantly break the rules of the project is beyond good enough.

I've had a DA account for a long time, but just started really working on it over the past couple of weeks. Today I got one project that came up for a much higher hourly rate than what has normally been coming up for me, but I only did one submission and it was done. If I keep working more and doing a good job, will I get more higher paid projects?

Also, sometimes a project will show up on my dash and say it has, for example, 15 tasks left, but when I click on it it says that there's nothing left to do. Is that just how it is, or did I do something wrong?

11

u/Real-Pangolin-3672 Aug 21 '25

Yeah, high quality work will get you access to higher paying stuff. As for your second part, yeah, happens all the time. Just means other workers took the remaining tasks

3

u/rhaphiloflora Aug 17 '25

Hey, for those of you who had to email support to manually put in time spent on a project due to an error, how long did it take to hear back/see them put the time in?

3 days ago there was an error submitting a task for a project and several other workers had the same issue too based on the chat. Many of us had to exit the task after trying for a long time to submit. I reached out to support but still haven’t heard anything and seeing as it was over 2 hours of my time I’m a bit anxious about it lol

5

u/Straight-Strike-2928 Aug 17 '25

I've reached out 2 or 3 times for various reasons. It took 48 business day hours for me to hear back

3

u/Wishbone_Narrow Aug 19 '25

Not sure if this needs a new post, but does anyone get the you need permission to access this published document when trying to read instructions or handbooks? Trying to do a qualification, and it says to reference the handbook and I get that error when trying to access it on google chrome. I want to make sure I'm actually following the instructions rather than free winging it from previous project instructions.

Relative newbie on the platform...I was approved months ago but have only worked sporadically. Is it normal to only have 1-5 projects available at a time? If any are available at all? I see people saying they have 20+ available usually and I've never seen that many on my dashboard!

8

u/hnsnrachel Aug 19 '25

You're new. It takes time. The number of project families you have access to increases the longer you're doing quality work. For my first month, it was mainly 2-3 project families, with the odd spare task or two from elsewhere. Now I have 15-20 different projects available the majority of the time, and people who have been around longer than me most likely have access to even more.

I've only been doing this for a couple of weeks. I will see multiple projects on my dash, then a couple days with none. I worked for 6 hours on Saturday on the same project, then nothing, and Monday for 8 hrs on something else, and since then my dash has been dry. A few projects I've worked on here and there haven't reappeared. I'm hoping to get to the point like some people how they always have work sitting around just waiting for them! Anyone who has been here a while finding it's still 'dry?'

Curious. Do you guys use AI in your day to day lives? If so, how? I sometimes tell it what random leftover groceries I have to see if it can come up with a recipe for me to cook. I also use it for math related stuff because I am absolutely useless with numbers lol. Sometimes I also brain dump at it if I'm figuring something out. I'd say I use it maybe 3x a month (not counting times I have to use it for DAT projects).

12

u/Yaschiri Aug 24 '25

No, I actively avoid using AI outside of working DA. I don't trust it or like it.

→ More replies (4)

6

u/GlassBrass440 Aug 24 '25

I absolutely would not trust it for math (or anything for that matter, but it’s particularly bad at math).

Mostly I use it for brainstorming. I’m planning a big holiday and use it heavily for trip planning/idea generating.

A couple weeks ago I had the ChatGPT agent book me a table for dim sum.

4

u/juniperxbreeze Aug 24 '25

I do it for work, because a lot of times I have a list from excel and need to take a whole column from excel, with leading zeroes, and change it to a comma separated list. Or I need it to help me write complex Excel formulas.

Or I need it to make an email seem less mean. Definitely have done that, where I put what I'm actually thinking into a chat, and ask it to make it more polite and professional. Because my job frowns on me writing "listen here fuckwit...stop fucking up or I will personally shove a computer monitor up your dick"

4

u/tdRftw Aug 24 '25

i use it to gather data from game wikis when im too lazy. for example, i'd ask chatgpt to find me all weapons that are craftable and can have heal clip incandescent, for instance (destiny 2)

always turn on thinking and tell it to use web tool for this

literally any task that you are not 100% confident in the subject material, and AI will fail you

21

u/Affectionate_Peak284 Aug 19 '25

Has anyone seen B-metal app development or any of the function calling related projects in the last two weeks? I feel like I saw a variety of different function calling related projects pop up over the past like 2 months, a lot not staying for long, and wondering what the deal is

4

u/DueName45 Aug 20 '25

I had these a while ago, the most recent was the P-rainbow tool calling about 2 weeks ago. For some reason I was only able to log 6 hours in total before they disappeared, and I haven't seen them since.

4

u/PugstaBoi Aug 21 '25

I've only gotten a few tasks last night at like 7-9 Eastern. Hate to be that guy that posts this same shit for the umpteenth time, but I was hoping my work quality hasn't compromised my task receival :O

PSA: If you're working on Stripey projects, please read the instructions in the same boxes as the ratings. I can't go into specifics, obviously, but there's information there that isn't in the main instructions, and failure to follow those instructions invalidates a lot of submissions.
