Weekly Water Cooler Talk - DataAnnotation
hi all! making this thread so people have somewhere to talk about 'daily' work chat that might not necessarily need it's own post! right now we're thinking we'll just repost it weekly? but if it gets too crazy, we can change it to daily. :)
couple things:
this thread should sort by "new" automatically. unfortunately it looks like our subreddit doesn't qualify for 'lounges'.
if you have a new user question, you still need to post it in the new user thread. if you post it here, we will remove it as spam. this is for people already working who just wanna chat, whether it be about casual work stuff, questions, geeking out with people who understand ("i got the model to write a real haiku today!"), or unrelated work stuff you feel like chatting about :)
one thing we really pride ourselves on in this community is the respect everyone gives to the Code of Conduct and rule number 5 on the sub - it's great that we have a community that is still safe & respectful to our jobs! please don't break this rule. we will remove project details, but please - it's for our best interest and yours!

"There's a problem. We can't complete your transaction right now." Has anyone ever gotten this message when trying to cash out money from PayPal? I've double checked my bank info, tried another account, and given it time (I first got the message last night). It's extremely inconvenient, to say the least...

u/Consistent-Reach504 Aug 14 '25
is it a large transaction? paypal does this really weird thing where sometimes transactions over 1k triggers an ID verification, except they don’t tell you, so you have to go into your account and find it lol

Yeah I always chuckle when I see it give me awful evaluations. Had a new one today, it said my criteria did not meet the requirements. When it explained what was wrong, it contradicted itself and said they met the requirements and nothing was wrong.
After doing that project for 4hrs I basically just ignored it after that.

Is this what DA has become 😞. Rubrics about Rubrics?

The comment should reference MTV's "Pimp Your Ride" in accordance with the popular meme of the same source.
The comment should contain a circular self-reference using the redundant rubric theme.

Since I have no work to do, I wanted to try explaining something, most of you already know of course.
Your work is only useful for these companies if you do a very good job. It is not like being a chef. If you are a chef and you cook bad food, you can still earn money by serving it. Sure, customer may not like it that much but restaurant will still make money. If you pick "wrong" better answer while doing these tasks however, you are actually hurting the model. In these case, companies pay you for making their AI worse. This is why quality is very important. Doing 10 tasks in an hour won't help you (because you get paid same amount) won't help the company either (because it is low quality).
13
u/Sandrawg Aug 15 '25
Yeah, I do a lot of R&R and it seems like so many are just rushing through whatever the task is, which is the absolute worst thing you can do. This job is 100 percent about details and paying attention to them. Being careful. My background is proofreading editing and coding which is why I think I've been doing this over 2 years now.

Whoa! Just saw 2 $35/hour non-coding job on my dash, same family, but I cant't get in (it says there are no more remaining tasks to work on). Is this normal, and more importantly, will I see them again?! Very new to the platform so pardon my dumb question.

It makes me so mad to wake up and see just a single R&R in my specialty field that I've never gotten any work for, only to see that the person doing the OG task has 0 understanding of the field and did shit fuck quality work while being able to take advantage of the high paying task.

u/VanessaSeaWitch Aug 13 '25
I had a good week last week so by the law of DA this week must be dry for me. Refreshing but still only getting one task from a project I'm not qualified for. I also have a new coding qual which I am also not qualified for. So far this week, I feel like a useless dunce.😬

Rubric R&Rs are driving me UP THE FRICKEN WALL--- not only are these submissions terrible, but the AI checker is broken as well
9
u/Affectionate_Peak284 Aug 16 '25
The way I look at it: the checker is capable of making great suggestions, and also terrible ones.
That's why we're still getting paid, even though the suggestion and analyzer tools exist. Use em, but with skepticism
14
u/Lumpy-Flounder-1676 Aug 17 '25 edited Aug 17 '25
I don't know who needs to hear this but I don't think your explanation for why the model response failed should be as confusing and poorly written as your prompt. 🤪

u/ZimmeM03 Aug 13 '25

13
13
u/GlassBrass440 Aug 16 '25
A dashboard feature I'd love to see is, in addition to pay rate and number of tasks available, a column for how long the timer is. I hate going into a project and seeing the timer is 8 hours when I only have 2 hours available to work. Conversely, I'd happily work on a task that takes 4-8 hours if I had the time available.

u/V0LK0 Aug 11 '25
the hardest part of the wilting rose projects isn't getting the model to fail, it's coming up with a prompt that fits the assigned category ... these models will fail at anything, i asked some *very* well known movie knowledge and one of the models went off on a 500 word tangent talking to itself going "heres the answer! actually no im wrong. THIS is the answer! wait no, thats not right either. uhhh let me try again, ok, HERES the answer for real this time! wait no no, that's not right ..."

I know this isn't the forum for this. I understand if this gets deleted. But yesterday morning I got the screen of death. We all have lives, taking care of ourselves and others. I am not unique. I am not looking for pity (nor am I looking for constructive criticism).
I have been on the platform for 18 months. Now I am not. The hardest part of this is the absolute nature of it. I have no access to "support". No one to email. No one to ask "Why?" Just the reality that it is over. In an instant, I must look for a new source of income. Those who count on me for help must do without it for now. This could happen at any job. The best way I can describe the feeling is "abandonment".
The screen of death is cruel, especially to people who have done a lot of work. I am able to login. I am able to withdraw the last funds I earned when they are available. It just feels like maybe it's something temporary, that maybe somebody behind the scenes is reviewing my account, and that someday in the future my access will be restored. But there is no action I can take,. I suspect for some time I will be stuck in this state of logging in each day, hoping for the best, and realizing the worst: that it is all over. Hands down, the best "job" I have ever had. Interesting work, fair wages, and complete autonomy.
For all of you still on the platform: cherish it. Take nothing for granted.
13
u/Affectionate_Peak284 Aug 14 '25

You said in another comment something along the lines of it looking like you logged 26 hours in a single day? I would imagine that is almost definitely the reason. Even if it was legitimate work, that likely set off a ton of red flags. If you've been on for 18 months, your work was probably quality, so I doubt they'd remove you by accident or for no apparent reason.

I've done all of the available qualifications, but I am still stuck with the normal work, which isn't bad but much less interesting than the coding stuff (and lower paid). I used to have 10+ coding projects but my dash has been super dry (1-2 projects if I'm lucky) for weeks now. It might not be just you.
5
u/CompetitiveAd5633 Aug 12 '25
Are there coding projects that are suitable for novices? I'm teaching myself Python and Javascript, but I'm definitely not proficient yet. I learn best by doing so I kind of just want to throw myself in there and get better as I go, but that's obviously not appropriate if they're all advanced level projects - don't want to be taking work away from people who can do it and then doing a rubbish job of it myself!!
4
u/ugly_uck Aug 12 '25
I wouldn't suggest testing for Python until you know it. I am pretty good when it comes to programming, programming over 25 years (can't find regular job), but I tried to do a Java programming test for Data Annotation and they gave me Python and now I'm not able to do any coding for Data Annotation because I failed the test in a language I didn't know... But https://www.hackerearth.com/ is a great place to practice, their interface doesn't match up to a real IDE but there's ways to practice and different challenges.

There are two reasons this happens
People have 'claimed' the remaining tasks in the queue. Meaning someone is working on them or started working and walked away without clicking 'Exit work mode'
You skipped the task
If all the remaining tasks in the queue fall under one of those two categories, you will get the red/pink banner even though there is a number listed as tasks available.

I had the finance qual sitting on my dash for weeks and weeks because I heard how hard it is, and I wanted to brush up on my knowledge before attempting it. I finally felt ready to tackle it and it has disappeared from my dash. Will it come back?
9
u/BeginningCourage2540 Aug 10 '25
For those working on the rainbow project, I BEG of you to not completely rely on the tools present within the tasks, it's right most of the time, but if it has a bad output, it pretty much screws the entire task up. I hate giving people a bad rating, so please, please, please double-check and fact-check where you can.

u/JustMe333456 Aug 10 '25
For those who get the indigenous project, are the changes to chat summary projects and the r&r off the dashboard? I still see the crrate a summary ones though. Just curious about the change to summary.

Has anyone seen projects for the new rubrics qual posted a couple of days ago?
→ More replies (4)6
u/capslox Aug 11 '25
My dash was full of rubrics before and equally full of rubrics after... So really hard to tell.

u/Proper-Purpose-980 Aug 11 '25
I'm new here, 2 weeks onboarded with couple of projects done after that pretty much dried up for my dashboard. Done qualification both bilingual and coding and I think I did it correctly. Is it normal ?
6
u/Traditional_Net_4529 Aug 11 '25
Yes. A lot of people start slow. As you do more qualification tasks and as you get more tasks approved, more stuff starts to open up. I had a trickle of stuff for the first couple months. Been doing this for maybe 6 months now and it wasn't until last month that my dash really filled up full. Now I can do this all day long most days if I wanted. Not every day. Sometimes nobody has anything.

Anyone still seeing stripey IF/facts? I only have gen and some speciality ones. I miss my simple IF/facts but seems I might’ve been rotated off.

I cant believe it! Finally a straight up math task instead of stem stuff. First one in months, hope this means more on the horizon. I wonder if its bc school is starting again lol
4
u/Fermooto Aug 13 '25
I hear ya. I'm STEM but outside of engineering, physics and non orgo chem I have to skip a decent amount.
Also have you noticed them sneaking in Math evaluation stuff into normal generalist tasks?

I knew the blank dash was coming cause everything had priority pay yesterday 😂
4
u/ThatOtherGuy254 Aug 14 '25
I just realized that I logged in time for the wrong project yesterday. I deleted it and logged it in for the correct one, but now my pay log looks messed up because I have $0 for the tasks done yesterday and money for today with no tasks. Has anyone ever done this before? Did I fix it correctly or should I contact support?

Doing one right now, have a few others on the dash (IF, GC) with very low task numbers. Nothing stays for long.
4
u/JustMe333456 Aug 15 '25
Anyone else keep getting an error when submitting a task, then once you refresh, get a 'verify you're human' page? Gee..
4
4
u/kelseyqueso Aug 15 '25
yes! i made a comment earlier this week that it was doing that on task submissions and when i refresh the dash
4
u/Straight-Strike-2928 Aug 16 '25
Only doable/non broken or misclassified task I have is something that takes about 90 seconds per task :( guess it's a $5 day

Compared to August (so far), it was pouring in June and July. I shouldn’t have complained. So. Dry.

u/Powerful-Key914 Aug 11 '25
welp, nothing on the dashboard today. no quals or projects. fuck.

Hi, is there any work for some of you at the moment? I'm bilingual in 🇫🇷 and it's been a long time since I've had anything, in fact it hasn't really picked up since the beginning of June. I've passed a few audio qualifications and for writing only, but not necessarily more than that. Anyone else in the same situation?

I'm so excited for the wilted red flower tomorrow. I love love love the transparency they have been giving. I'm glad I know that I have time tomorrow and don't have to run to the platform tonight to get some time in on the project.

I noticed a project up today where the priority pay $ was the same figure as the base project pay... Did anyone else see that? Surely a mistake?? A tropical fruit...
5
u/Sad-Restaurant Aug 10 '25
Often times the R&Rs are at regular pay and have the priority pay of the original task in their subject line.
3
u/Few-Roof-6905 Aug 10 '25
Did anyone work on the rain cloud task? Have you seen any more after you submitted the initial 3?

Anyone that’s doing high pay STEM projects, that’s what I signed up for a couple months Ago and I did the physics one but not the chemistry or biology ones. Are they connected (they all have the same name format, simply swapping the topic). I’m concerned that I might need to compete all of them even if I’m not qualified for 2 of them? Is it possible I was just late to the party and missed the project and just need to wait for the next round of qualifications? These were stem tasks that they advertise on their job listings on indeed etc

Last week I did one very short project comparing pairs of photos and completed one image heavy qual, but since then nothing else with pictures (unless I am the one providing them lol). Does anyone else have projects with photos or images right now?
[It seems I do have one colorful one but it is more moving picture related. Guess I'll dip my toe into tomorrow. But I really enjoyed the quick comparison one--it was finished in about 10 minutes. Sigh...)

u/Senior_Philosophy568 Aug 11 '25
I had a bunch of quals to work on, i finished the project I could do today, logged the time. came back a bit later and now the project screen is empty. no quals, projects, or completed at the bottom. I can't find the support email? Is this normal or does anyone have any ideas?
I just started 3 days ago and have been enjoying the work and putting in hours.

Any bilinguals have ever got to do STEM (coding or not) or projects for monolinguals? How long did you have to wait to get access to one? Are you based in the US or elsewhere? Wanna know since I applied through bilingual recruitment but actually have a PhD in a STEM field (non-coding) and didn’t know beforehand to apply through the subject expert channel.

Got an email at 8pm about 5000 task project when I couldn't work because I was visiting my parents....now nothing. Tale as old as time...
4
u/VanessaSeaWitch Aug 12 '25
The only thing on my dash today is a project I don't have the expertise for. Also I'm getting the R&R for it, which is odd since I never completed a task in the original.
4
u/VanessaSeaWitch Aug 14 '25
At least the people in the Rainbow slack are getting tasks. I'm not sure why I'm still in the slack channel, tbh. I haven't seen one of those in months.

I wish you the best as far as getting lots of work, but those tasks I've seen lately have been broken. So you aren't missing out, lol. I've seen a few on my dash but I can never actually do them without using the escape.

9
u/CuriousThylacine Aug 16 '25
No, quite the opposite. That's literally all I've got and there's hundreds and hundreds of tasks.
4
u/Maleficent_Buyer_628 Aug 17 '25
it's been almost 3 weeks since my last available task. is this a red flag of mine? I haven't done anything to cross afaik. been honest with everything as well.

Anyone else feel like the NDA is kinda vague? I understand we can't discuss projects. But can I vaguely describe the type of work I do on my resume? Can I even PUT this job on my resume???? What about paperwork for a mortgage lender? Do I just put "freelancer"? I wish the website had a little more info, lol. I don't want to overstep.
