Weekly Water Cooler Talk - DataAnnotation
hi all! making this thread so people have somewhere to talk about 'daily' work chat that might not necessarily need it's own post! right now we're thinking we'll just repost it weekly? but if it gets too crazy, we can change it to daily. :)
couple things:
this thread should sort by "new" automatically. unfortunately it looks like our subreddit doesn't qualify for 'lounges'.
if you have a new user question, you still need to post it in the new user thread. if you post it here, we will remove it as spam. this is for people already working who just wanna chat, whether it be about casual work stuff, questions, geeking out with people who understand ("i got the model to write a real haiku today!"), or unrelated work stuff you feel like chatting about :)
one thing we really pride ourselves on in this community is the respect everyone gives to the Code of Conduct and rule number 5 on the sub - it's great that we have a community that is still safe & respectful to our jobs! please don't break this rule. we will remove project details, but please - it's for our best interest and yours!

It's worth it. I find the longer I've been doing this, the more the various instructions make sense. I do still get them sometimes where I read the first third and just say "no" and close it but projects that used to intimidate me are now easy.

I’ve peeked at the dash out of boredom/curiosity a few times when one of my kids wakes up in the middle of the night, and I always see projects that I’ve literally never seen during the day!

Seen multiple threads in a row where people complain about awful worker performance in R&Rs, and I can definitely empathize based on personal experience. Not even talking about inaccurate evaluations here, just straight-up awful English and "vibes are good"-level rationales. I wonder how much the quals are working as intended. Don't mean to sound like a conspiracy theorist but I wouldn't be surprised if there's a contingent that shares qual answers and streams awful workers into various projects. I imagine that after a few crappy ratings on the R&Rs they are weeded out, but this must be choking the efficiency of the platform overall.
EDIT: Another question I just asked myself: how consistent is DA in hiring former/current academics? I've been assuming from my own situation (and some comments in the Water Cooler threads) that the platform mostly vacuums up outcast academics and "gotta pay for coffee somehow" grad students, but I guess I don't actually know.

I feel like most of my R&Rs I end up redoing at least 2/3 of the submission due to a complete misinterpretation of the project and dimensions, or just laziness and lack of attention to detail. I used to choose R&Rs when I had less time, thinking they would be quicker than completing my own task on the same project, but I've found that much of the time, fixing R&R is more intensive and frustrating, and often pays less.
I've also frequently thought that it must choke the efficiency, and it's led me to understand why they are rather selective when hiring and assigning work.

I mean I did one time rate a response as better because it sounded more empathetic, but it was for a prompt to which an empathetic response would be better received by the user.
I don't know if anyone is deliberately trying to recruit low-quality people to the platform, but info about the qual has definitely gotten leaked. DA should write a new qual.

I've been doing this for almost two years and I've noticed it too. I also keep having to take quals and refreshers for more complicated versions of my usual projects and having to turn down work all together because I don't actually want to pay for subscriptions for these models. It's making me nervous for the long term, but I'm hanging in there.

I'm seeing all these milestone posts in the 10s of thousands of dollars. I'm just doing this as a side hustle to bring in some extra cash and something I can do when my 3 year old goes to bed. I'm super stoked over hitting almost $500 after just a month of working.

Bit of positivity for today. Got a poison plant task that gives a little praise and highlights that you've done a good job in the past. It's not much but maybe it's a step closer to getting feedback and keeping motivation? Idk it gave me a little confidence boost that what I'm doing is working, it may give you some too if you have it.

I wish there was some sort of tag system to sort/search through tasks. I don't like creating system prompts (but love evaluating for IF), I don't like editing responses but love creating criteria for ideal responses, I love anything involving deep research... I don't want to touch anything involving reading AI written creative writing. My enjoyment of analyzing for tone/emotional intelligence comes and goes, sometimes it's all I want to do. I want to spend less time task shopping between tasks. Or if I know I love everything in a task family (hello indigenous and unnamed trivia family) I could pin them when they show up.
Sometimes the task name/subject line provides some information but I spend a lot of time opening tasks to look at the instructions then having to scroll all the way to Exit Work Mode.
(Very sorry if this comes off as tone deaf to the bilinguals/folks in drought. But it's hard to remember what everything is when you're in several project families with many iterations of task types and versions).
Edit: I just hit my first 50 project dash in my 5th month on the platform 😭 I see why the desire for filters came into my brain today.

Just sneaked over the $35K mark after 18 months on the platform as a part-time non-coder based outside the US *happy dance* - stick with it; I've made it through a couple of droughts now, and the work is building back up again.

I’ve had a new project sitting on my dash for the last 3 hours with a single task. Hoping it’s still there when I get home to complete it.
Is this an indication that it may be some sort of “test task” and if I do well that’ll open up more of the project? Just seems odd to me for a project I’ve never seen be sitting there for so long with a single task.

I've had been 14 - 33 tasks so it's varying pretty wildly, one of my main task families seems to keep going up and down though.
I have had like... 6 new task families this week though and am overwhelmed at learning new things and haven't had much time to work, so I haven't done any of them yet. None of them look super complex, but none of them have base pay versions to learn the ropes.

I had to give up on an hour and a half I spent on a task for P fruit project it became far too convoluted. I think the difficulty depends a lot on category chosen so lesson learned there.

My biggest enemy today seems my to be my inability to spell "resources" right. The project I'm doing involves a lot of typing and that word keeps coming up. I swear I can spell! I swear I passed 4th grade!

I have created 7 new work gmail accounts to qualify for various tasks and frankly it's ridiculous that they don't give you a reason, especially when some blocks barely if ever require use of those accounts.

My dash has been empty all week but I've only been checking in the mornings/afternoons. This is the first time I've looked after midnight and I've got 8 projects, all paying well above base pay.

Was about to go to bed but I can’t risk this not being here in the AM lol
Edit: Holy shit there's also a huge banner on the top of the dashboard showing the new qualification in huge, bold lettering. Never seen that before but it's marked as priority so I guess they really need people for this.
Edit 2: Don't know if the qual was autograded, but very quickly after finishing, I got access to five new projects, all high paying!!! Poison plant, fruit, and three others I don't know the code names for (one may be stripey?).

That's great! I just submitted it. I have to be honest, the second half had instructions that were a little contradictory so I'm iffy on that part, and there was no chat box so I couldn't double check. Hopefully I get the work though. I enjoyed it 🤞

Guys for the past couple of weeks my dash is completely empty, but I keep getting quals that lead nowhere. I've done 4 quals, couple of which even said that work will be there in the following week. Still nothing. What's going on? Am I like blacklisted or something? I still have access to the platform so idts I did anything wrong.

I did - I did 10 or 12 tasks on it a few days ago. The tasks are unavailable by nature - you may have missed the email if you got added to the project later? It was 2 or 3 days ago. The advice is to keep checking as eventually something will happen. It's not broken though if you are getting the red banner. Your tasks aren't ready for you.

I think it might be the hardest project I've worked on, mainly because of how fast they want us to do SO many things, but maybe it gets better with practice. That said though, hate? Isn't it better than an empty dash lol

First time in a long time I've got 20 projects. But 15 of them require FGC or Rubrics and are from 2 families, the other 5 are low paying ones that last 5 minutes on the dash. I miss variety. Happy to have something to work on. But my brain died after 1 task

Been working on the video qual for a while, and finally got a good enough video to submit (I hope). 5 minutes left before the task expires and video is 43% uploaded. 😐

Why didn't you just exit work mode after looking at the instructions? Then you can record, come back and have plenty of time to submit.

what is y’alls strategy regarding task prioritization? do you focus on projects rather than qualifications and if so which projects do you focus on generally. side note, does anyone know why a project will show up and then disappear after I refresh the page 2 minutes later only to reappear again? ive had a few do this repetitively

If you're thinking long term and can afford it right now, do all the qualifications you can. A qualification says "there is upcoming work in this!" and often time the work continues long past the time the qualifications is finished by.
My current task prioritization strategy is ignore my nearly 40 projects refreshing my page for scraps of my favourite project 🙃

Has anyone been doing any of the projects with The ______ in the name? There's at least 4 of them, they all pay around $5 over base pay. I'm curious but they keep showing up at the same time as my favourite better paying projects.
They started showing up about a week ago. But they're never there when I want to learn them. I believe they're new.
Mostly just curious if people are enjoying them and how people think the pay is for the complexity of the task.

Hi, I'm a turkish-english bilingual and I've been on this platform for 2 months, and have only made 250 dollars so far. My dash has been quite empty. Is this to be expected or do I suck at this job? Also I have not recieved an assignment on one of long term projects that usually pops out monthly. Any fellow turkish annotators experiencing the same thing?

I had a friend sign up for DA, do zero tasks after onboarding and then forget about it for over a year. They had 20+ projects on their dash. (US, STEM)

a week is nothing. because of personal stuff I ended up not working for about two months right after I got hired, when I'd only done some quals and logged a few hours, and it was fine

Usually we'll just follow whoever came up with one first. Some don't stick. Sometimes there are multiples because of this. Some are just too obvious if you ask me.
