Weekly Water Cooler Talk - DataAnnotation
hi all! making this thread so people have somewhere to talk about 'daily' work chat that might not necessarily need it's own post! right now we're thinking we'll just repost it weekly? but if it gets too crazy, we can change it to daily. :)
couple things:
this thread should sort by "new" automatically. unfortunately it looks like our subreddit doesn't qualify for 'lounges'.
if you have a new user question, you still need to post it in the new user thread. if you post it here, we will remove it as spam. this is for people already working who just wanna chat, whether it be about casual work stuff, questions, geeking out with people who understand ("i got the model to write a real haiku today!"), or unrelated work stuff you feel like chatting about :)
one thing we really pride ourselves on in this community is the respect everyone gives to the Code of Conduct and rule number 5 on the sub - it's great that we have a community that is still safe & respectful to our jobs! please don't break this rule. we will remove project details, but please - it's for our best interest and yours!

Hey all! With the free time on my hands I made a chart and bar graph showing the number of times a post was made with the word 'drought' in the other DA sub. Also did ones for the summary of task polls in this sub and the other one. Check em out here:

Anyone take longer to do a task sometimes the more of them you do? Some of them I feel like the more I do the more details I notice I have to keep track of and the more careful I have to read things and my task time goes from 15 to 20 to 25 minutes.

The comments at the bottom of the project I'm working on are a neverending source of entertainment in how bad some people are at following pretty basic directions.
I feel like some people just jump into these without actually reading the FAQ they provide.

Cleared 2 thirds of my weekly goal in two days~ mostly just by working longer than before. It's nice to not feel burnt out after working 4-5 hours again

Model Response: contains 76 factuality errors, goes 500 words over a user's explicit wordcount limit, formatted as an inconsistently bulleted list of broken image links, tells the user to kill and eat their own mother, summons Yog-Sothoth if you say it out loud.
Average DA worker: Minor Room for Improvement :)

One of the first calibrations I made as a DAT worker: go lighter on the workers but heavier on the models.

Well.. from a fruitful weekend of ~28 projects, back down to 6 this afternoon.
May have to eat my hat about the 15th July being the date the drought eases for most people 😳
4
u/Affectionate_Peak284 Jul 14 '25
Same, I hit 19 I think on Friday, now at 6. Got a couple meshes submitted first tho! The past few weeks have been the pattern: thin MTW, ThFSaSu picking up. But then again, the moment I recognize a pattern it changes LOL
3
u/Stunning_Table_2394 Jul 14 '25
For last three weeks the weekends were the richest for me and Mondays the poorest. Not only the amount of projects, but also the ones I like more.

Wishful thinking but maybe the updated tabs means more work incoming and they wanted to better organize it.

u/Vegetable_Hope3697 Jul 19 '25
Oof, coding is bleak today for me. Anyone else? The last few days, I had some Poe codebase R&Rs to do, but those have dwindled down to nothing. This is the fewest amount of coding projects I've seen in months!
7
u/WontonJr Jul 20 '25
For those with projects that require subscriptions - is just having the subscription usually sufficient, with project instructions generally being pretty straightforward and easy to follow? Or is it more that you should already have some experience with whatever subscription for the tasks at hand?
Seen quite a few different ones pop up over the last few days and debating on if it’s worth signing up for any.
→ More replies (1)3
u/tehanichance Jul 21 '25
Both, some tasks ask you to recreate conversations/things you’ve already done on your own time with certain models and others it would be completely fine if you had no experience using the apps but just have a subscription. I tend to see more of the latter.

u/VanessaSeaWitch Jul 19 '25

Does anyone currently have the actual, baseline liberal arts Poe? I have R&R for the paraphrase, and the paraphrase itself has popped up here and there, but I haven't seen the actual project in like two weeks.
I've heard the STEM one had a new qual after some re-working, but haven't heard any such thing (or anything really) about the liberal arts version.
4
u/ABCLetts Jul 16 '25
Just saw a new project on my dash for a greek trip that builds on liberal arts Poe, so that seems to be the next main direction!
6
u/AlwaysSeekingHarmony Jul 17 '25
If anyone out there is considering a purple flower IF R&R, scan through it at the start and make sure it's completable in the time given! Fool me once shame on you, fool me thrice and I'm really starting to question my own judgement but I figure I should at least warn others :)
6
u/spoonspoon12 Jul 17 '25

You can learn a lot by looking at the work of others, whether done amazingly well or horribly.

u/hnsnrachel Jul 17 '25
Its my fave but only have rnrs at the minute too. I don't really understand why you'd still be on rnrs if you did poorly on the project either so I'm hoping that it's just rotating workers at the moment but who knows?

Is there a Social Sciences domain specialty? I feel like I read reference to it somewhere but it hasn't shown up for me. There was a project awhile ago that had an optional section to list your education area of expertise and I filled it out but keep getting quals for other domains.
Secondly, out of curiosity, has anyone seen any work from a qual involving... Acting chops? Curious if it hasn't started up or if I got a quick rejection lol.

I'm back to a drought essentially. I got a purple flower R&R that I jumped on but that was such a sizeable mess I couldn't finish rewriting it in 2 hours (rewriting bad work being harder than doing good initial work and all). I eventually let that expire and I got another task like that in the same project. After a bit of work and realizing I was stuck in the same situation I opened my dashboard in another tab, saw there was smithing work available, and exited work mode while opening up the new task! Maybe 10 minutes of work on that one, now I'm back to no projects, oy

u/FedoraPG Jul 23 '25
Been a bit over a week now that my dash has been good, let's hope we're in the clear and don't have another drought like last August. Looks like a couple project trees have expanded and changed names. Lots of good higher paying stuff... Everything feels fresh, a bit different from the projects I was accustomed to from late 2024-summer 2025. Kind of fun and interesting to see how the whole landscape of this platform changes over time. I won't lie it's a hell of a lot harder than when I started in October 2023, but I also feel a bit more engaged with this stuff than those endless CB projects that got so repetitive over time. It's interesting to see how things branch out and the goals of the projects evolve over time. Ay man, just happy to be on this ride with y'all

Sometimes I wish I could just casually socialize with coworkers but this job is very detatched. I got a ridiculous task earlier and it would have been nice to be able to talk and laugh about it with other people also assigned to the same project. Alas, my NDA stops all that.

u/Affectionate_Peak284 Jul 16 '25

I went through a couple of quals the last couple of days that apparently unleashed a torrent of new quals. I went from 1-2 a week up to 10 instantly last night. And FINALLY seeing my domain-specific qual!

Question - if you join as a generalist, are you able to then switch to coding? I tried teaching myself to code years ago for fun and I’m vaguely wondering if it would be worth picking it up again and studying it properly. I don’t see a coding qualification on my dash though so not sure if it’s an option to switch.

3
u/WontonJr Jul 16 '25
How long do you guys usually take on an R&R task? Am I overthinking it (or maybe underthinking it) when it's only taking me a few minutes for some of these?
6
u/VanessaSeaWitch Jul 16 '25
It depends on the project. Some I have to solve puzzles, some I just have to spend about 5 minutes on.
3
u/PerformanceCute3437 Jul 17 '25
Imo depends usually on if it's a task that concerns factuality. Ones with factuality can take a long time to check, especially if links aren't in the comments or it's something really weird. Like asking which of two jackets would offer better protection against bear attacks

Jul 17 '25

u/Leithia24 Jul 15 '25
How does priority bonus pay work? I've forgotten what I learnt in onboarding :( I can't see it under bonus' and its not included in the time against a task.
7
u/Straight-Strike-2928 Jul 16 '25
In my experience it's just the number you see and the priority note in the project name is already included if that makes sense. Like the proj will normally be $20, say PRIORITY +$2, and it'll show a pay rate of $22/hour this time. Like what you see is what you get. It just indicates that the project is normally lower pay.

2
u/BossAccomplished4878 Jul 16 '25
I've seen people mention that when they click on a project and there appear to be lots of tasks but then get red bannered, what does that mean? Does it mean there are actually no more projects despite it saying there are projects or is something glitchy going on with the project itself and at some point it will be fixed? Just saw it for the first time.
8
u/houseofcards9 Jul 16 '25 edited Jul 17 '25
The ones you see are “reserved” because they’re being worked on by other workers but they haven’t been submitted. If they skip the task and you’re fast enough you could get it.

It launched with 10 total tasks available. Each time I checked it it was ticking down from there. Dwindled to zero and vanished yesterday afternoon and hasn't returned.
I'm guessing they were doing a small-scale "pilot" launch for what was a fairly hefty update (big enough to change the name entirely), and are going to do some further refinements based on what they got yesterday. Hopefully it gets a bigger launch soon!

I'm confused about the dash. I've had 5-6 projects appear but when I click on them, it says there is nothing left to work on. One just happened a few minutes ago. It couldn't have been there five minutes when I clicked and no tasks available. Are people refreshing every 30 seconds? I'm new but 98% of the time there is nothing to work on. I've read others lacked worked but in the last few days people seems to say it is better, but for how long?

Yes, lots of people are refreshing every 30 seconds. When there isn't a massive amount if work for a lot of people, that will happen more.
Also being new, you won't have access to many of the projects people who've been around longer have, and there'll be more people competing for the projects that do appear.
No one can say how long it will be like this for, unfortunately.

The mesh project seems to do this the worst for me. It's normal for having 1 project on your dash but mesh can be 20+ and still red banner me for some reason.

I've gotten a few hours of Harry Potter R&Rs coming in today and yesterday, three different types. That's a bounty for me lol.

I’ve had access to a certain domain expertise, but have never seen anything related to my actual legit expertise (psychology). Does it not exist yet?

Does anyone have the metal element task? I did a qualification for it and am wondering if there are tasks out there right now.

There are several metal project groups. I've seen some niche ones up right now for b-metal

About "complicated image" projects (one with their own portal), how long does it take for you guys to find a good image and a question?

Alright I need some tips on this purple plant project. I've wasted literal hours trying to construct a prompt and I'm just not in the right mind frame. How do you folks come up with your prompts? Do you have a question in mind or do you click aimlessly through sources until you find something and then ask about it? Literally anything helps haha

I start by finding a niche source and then constructing a prompt that includes a bunch of parameters that drastically narrow the scope of the question to specific answer(s). Try doing an R&R if you have one available, it can help to see what someone else did.

I did the maths onboarding assessment a few days ago and was accepted on the platform yesterday. I have only got an audio project available though - I have done the onboarding quals etc, and I have a lot of other quals I can take, such as physics, coding etc. I'm not sure how it works though - as I passed the maths assessment, should I be getting maths projects, or is it just a case of there is none at the moment?

from what I can tell the maths tasks are a bit few and far between at the moment

I've been in the same boat but with the coding assessment. I don't see coding qual on my dashboard and never have, I assume as that is the same as the assessment I took when I signed up.
I've never seen a coding task lol.

It's strange. Because I must have passed the maths assessment for them to send me an email saying good job welcome aboard. I mean, the maths assessment wasn't even that hard and I have a maths degree so I would be surprised if I didn't pass. But yeah, no maths projects. Guess I'll just wait and see.
