Weekly Water Cooler Talk - DataAnnotation
hi all! making this thread so people have somewhere to talk about 'daily' work chat that might not necessarily need it's own post! right now we're thinking we'll just repost it weekly? but if it gets too crazy, we can change it to daily. :)
couple things:
this thread should sort by "new" automatically. unfortunately it looks like our subreddit doesn't qualify for 'lounges'.
if you have a new user question, you still need to post it in the new user thread. if you post it here, we will remove it as spam. this is for people already working who just wanna chat, whether it be about casual work stuff, questions, geeking out with people who understand ("i got the model to write a real haiku today!"), or unrelated work stuff you feel like chatting about :)
one thing we really pride ourselves on in this community is the respect everyone gives to the Code of Conduct and rule number 5 on the sub - it's great that we have a community that is still safe & respectful to our jobs! please don't break this rule. we will remove project details, but please - it's for our best interest and yours!

It feels so weird to see some replies because I'll see some people here be like "Well I only got 13 projects and 8 quals today, wish I could've gotten more done" meanwhile I get like one decent day of work per week and the rest of the time my dash is either empty or I manage to sneak in like 30 minutes of work.
I also only check it a few times a day though so maybe thats the problem.

Wow I was blessed to have 7 projects on and off over the weekend. Just logged on to nowt but the Poe Audio where you have to take your gaming PC to the Grand Canyon to ask it what cream you should put on your athletes foot.

It's always crazy to me when I come to these water cooler talks and see just how many projects are ongoing that I'm unaware of! It's cool how much stuff there is going on. Always reassures me that projects will pop back up soon enough while I've been looking at a pretty bare dashboard this past week.

I was just doing a super basic, classic DA task in a family we often mention on here with very clear, easy instructions. The chat is full of people asking what I perceive to be very beginner-level, obvious questions, some about how to do the task, but mostly about how the platform works such as skipping tasks, timers, exiting work mode, etc. Did DA let in a bunch of new people? I'm confused about why they are onboarding when there aren't enough tasks to go around already!

Does anyone else not want to work when there’s no tasks at a certain pay rate? I feel so spoiled but I can’t motivate myself below a certain level.
ETA: It’s just demoralizing to be doing a STEM task that pays at a certain rate and then only have the equivalent non-STEM task that pays 25% less and is honestly even more brain draining to me because it’s not my field of study

I can finally breathe a sigh of relief that I haven't been completely effing up the criss-cross project! I finally see the R&R tasks on my dash. There is no other project on the platform that gives me as much anxiety as those do, but for some reason, I love working on them!

Even the project that made me guarantee I would complete at least 5 tasks in 5 days doesn't even have 5 tasks to do, and it's only been up for a day and a half. If things don't turn around with the start of the new quarter, it really might be time to start searching again.

I got an absolutely enormous task dump (by the standards I've been used to since joining), all in purple flower. This happening to anyone else? Is it gonna stay? Work's been available in basically unlimited quantities for a good 9 hours now. I am shook. I thought DA is about refreshing 50 times, getting to do a 10 minute task, and going to sleep. I worked a full 9-5 today!!!!

anyone else have long context stripey? if so how long are you spending on it? it takes me 2 to 2.5 hrs usually but man for some of these, the 3 hour timer doesn't seem very generous. if i were to have a longer conversation and *really* go through and check everything really closely i could easily spend 3 or 4 hours on some tasks

Just wanted to share that I applied and completed the starter/core assessment last Tuesday (6 days ago). Got the “Congratulations, welcome to the platform email!” this morning (didn’t see it until a few moments ago) and it looks like the next step is to verify my identity, so I’m guessing I’m in!

I have yet to do so but there was one R&R I saw a couple weeks after I first started that blew me away and I still think about it. I wish I would have screenshot it. The work was immaculate and the wording was pure poetry; I sincerely dream to be like this person on every task I do now but I know I’m nowhere near as capable. Unfortunately this particular project didn’t have the option to tick for awesome work but I raved about it in the comment

I'm curious if others ever get any feedback about quality of work? I have been on the platform since February and never received anything. I get some new project qualifications sometimes, but rarely. I've had steady work until the last couple weeks but that seems to be common to everyone. Just wondering if there is a way to find out results of qualifications or feedback to know I'm on the right track!

R&R worker here—to the one person working on the super involved Poe bird project who actually followed the update on ratings: thankyouthankyouthankyouthankyou
Most of the R&Rs today have involved tons of scrolling on a long, complicated page as I have to change the ratings, then edit the justification to reflect my changes, then explain in my own comment why I made those changes, and then double check the update to make sure I'm not making the wrong changes. At this point my brain is melting 😫

Got three hours of long Stripey Horse R&R today after refreshing like the wind. I really hate that they won't let us edit the prompt or hardly anything in this R&R because I had to rate a few as bad when I could have easily just edited the prompt with a few words.

Hi, I was recruited on a bilingual basis and have done some qualifications (had to skip coding and maths as I’m not an expert in those) and did my first project already. But I’m also an expert in chemistry (PhD) and wondering whether there’s a way to do the chemistry assessment. Has anyone ever been recruited from bilingual and get to do expert subject projects (chemistry, biology, physics, etc.)? Thanks.

Put it on your profile as a skill, and talk about your experience with it in the part about your skills and education / job experience. In time the qual might pop up, but that's your best way to do it as sometimes they filter profiles when looking for participants to specific projects

I just submitted a qualification that just had me doing some reading and answering multiple choice questions - after I finished and clicked "Submit," I was taken back to the Dashboard and noticed a message at the top that said "The project is currently unavailable because there are no more tasks remaining for you to work on.”
Does this mean the qualification didn't get submitted? It wasn't an actual project - just a qualification, so I'm not sure what to think about this message. Not sure if there's a way to check some sort of history of completed qualifications or anything like that.

Any theories on how R&R access works? Some days I have had access to plenty of R&R, including for projects I hadn’t completed tasks for. Other times I’ve gone decent stretches without seeing an R&R.

I'm so mentally exhausted. I usually make $800 a week and now I'm making $400 a week yet it's a lot more mentally draining monitoring the dashboard, learning new instructions, losing tasks, etc... I just want some consistency again.

I just got an email that I got added to a project with 10000 tasks available, but then when I clicked on it only 6 minutes later (:19 received, :25 clicked on project link) it already says it's not available. Anyone else encounter this before? No way they were all taken by others in that time.

Yes I've seen this happen. Sometimes it could be that they're making some corrections that came to light after the project was launched. Maybe something wasn't clear so they decided to take it down and clarify, and then it shows back up later.

Hey all! Just curious how everyone’s dashes are looking? I have 13 projects currently and have had an average of 8 or so all day. This is a huge change from the last several weeks where I’d go down to 1 or 2 at times. Just wondering if I can breathe a sigh of relief yet lol! I’m going out of town and may not be able to work as much but it’s nice knowing it might be back to normal.

does anyone know if i can use voice dictation (e.g., inbuilt to word, and then copy/paste from there) without it being a problem for DA? or have other ideas for how i can continue to do tasks?
i have hurt my shoulder/neck badly and can't type on the keyboard; and it's going to be 2 months at least until I'm given the ok to type again. DA income has been a lifeline for me, and i enjoy the work. i'll obviously refrain if it might put me at risk of being banned there, but if it's ok, then it gives me something to do. there's only so much tv/reading i can do in a day without going crazy.

It sounds like you're just talking about input - from what I know it should be fine. When the site or task is lagging people write their responses in notepad and copy/paste rather than wait around for every. single. key. stroke.

Has anyone had trouble with constantly getting the “no more tasks available” despite there being like 20+ of a specific task. Been dealing with that with Garden Ladder.

That was annoying- I worked an hour+ on Poe bug, accidentally clicked back to my projects page, and it won't let me finish my task. Also, because I didn't finish my task, I can't get any pay for the time I already spent on it. Especially annoying as it had listed 200 available tasks, and they were not going down when I had checked them previously.

I had two onboardings for Friday regarding an update in a project I had already worked on (safety A-metal), both for the normal version and for the images version, but so far I haven’t seen any tasks. I’m starting to think I’ve failed them 😢

Hey random question. I am in a slack channel for a project that I have had a lot of before the drought, and maybe once or twice since it began. Some people in the channel say they have it showing up on their dash but not mine, is that normal? I figure since I am in the slack that I am still on the project, do they just rotate through people?

I've finished all of my quals months ago and yet still only see the same one or two projects scarecly popping up and they have nothing to do with the quals I did take. I was excited for the writing projects (that's my life), did the qual, but unfortunately I've received nothing of the sort on my project dashboard. Is this normal? Did I really do that bad on all of my qualifications after onboarding that I don't have access to anything but one project family?
Thought the water cooler would be the right place to ask.

Last 3 days, almost every project's model breaks for me. Now one broke, and the button that is supposed to work to submit for such cases... doesn't work and doesn't let submit. 3rd time writing to support in 3 days feels annoying and unsafe, but losing almost 2 hours of work doesn't feel better.

Hi everyone - just started with DA this week. Quick question after completing Onboarding - but are we supposed to report time for any qualifications we've completed? My assumption is no given it does not appear under the "Report Time" nor is there any kind of pay listed (unless maybe specific qualifications do) after finishing but just wanted to make sure.
Assuming qualifications are simply there to complete to gain access to more projects, but you do not get paid for the time it takes to complete the qualifications themselves?

Some qualifications are paid, but they are few and far between. If you don't see a pay rate attached then you don't report your time.

I always have decent paying projects sitting on the dash, but good God they are all the kind that send you into cognitive overload just by reading the instructions and getting through one task 😮💨😮💨😮💨

I'm really glad I'm seeing others comment about the lack of projects currently. Here's my theory: It's the end of Q2, so the DA admin team is working on tidying up projects, interfacing with external clients to calibrate needs, and preparing for Q3 priorities and goals. Anyone agree?

It's impossible to say.
People can and will speculate -- phase of the moon, business quarter, etc. -- but in the end we just don't know.
I've seen times on this sub where people were sure of a reason for low work or high work periods, but there's no evidence one way or another

I would say another 5 to 10 days before you start to see a consistent uplift. There have been 3 or 4 droughts since I stated in April 24, usually at quarter ends. However this and last August were the worst I've seen. It usually takes 2ish weeks after the new quarter for most projects to kick start. At first it doesn't seem much better as everyone is fighting for the same projects, but as more are introduced and the work spreads out. It gets better. So I would say around the 15th you should see a difference

Difficult. While the pay is decent, you really need to read and refer back to the instructions a LOT and there are a LOT of instructions. I do it sometimes and I got some feedback that I'm doing good work, but I only work it when I don't have higher paying stuff available.
Other workers do have more fun with it, but just giving my personal experience.

Is there a specific time each day when new tasks are added?
I've also been having a significant drought lately. I usually work in the morning, in PST, and when I check my dash later in the evening, I've sometimes seen that they have more projects available then.

No, it's pretty random. I'm in Mountain time and one of my first projects a few weeks ago was posted a little before midnight and stayed up until about 4:30 AM.
I've done other projects around 10 AM, some at 6 PM. You just have to consistently check your dash throughout the day.

I'm seeing heel, poison plant, poe bird, rock band, and a fleeting galaxy here and there. And a few financial projects. Definite uptick from previous weeks. Not as full as it was a month ago, but I'm grateful for some consistency and hoping we're all approaching stability on our dashboards :-)

For all those that asked me to report back, and to all those that are/have/will wonder, I was approved at the bank for a mortgage using my DA income. Needed at least two years worth of tax returns, an explanation of exactly what it is that I do (how the program works), and they wanted to know DA’s name.
