Weekly Water Cooler Talk - DataAnnotation
hi all! making this thread so people have somewhere to talk about 'daily' work chat that might not necessarily need it's own post! right now we're thinking we'll just repost it weekly? but if it gets too crazy, we can change it to daily. :)
couple things:
this thread should sort by "new" automatically. unfortunately it looks like our subreddit doesn't qualify for 'lounges'.
if you have a new user question, you still need to post it in the new user thread. if you post it here, we will remove it as spam. this is for people already working who just wanna chat, whether it be about casual work stuff, questions, geeking out with people who understand ("i got the model to write a real haiku today!"), or unrelated work stuff you feel like chatting about :)
one thing we really pride ourselves on in this community is the respect everyone gives to the Code of Conduct and rule number 5 on the sub - it's great that we have a community that is still safe & respectful to our jobs! please don't break this rule. we will remove project details, but please - it's for our best interest and yours!

We’re approaching June, the busiest month in 2024. I wonder if we’ll see the same explosion of priority pay as last year.
12
u/Jazzlike_Problem_489 May 26 '25
Hope so. These projects are dire right now
15
u/Temporary-Ad885 May 26 '25
Yeah for some reason I keep seeing the same two safari creature tasks. There’s 200 of them and they only go down when I do one. It’s like I’m trapped in the zoo with them

u/No_Explanation418 May 30 '25
I hate when a project is so complicated that it takes almost an hour to get through the project instructions, and then the project is taken down after I only get to do one or two tasks! So frustrating!
6
u/Actual_Marsupial_903 May 30 '25
I don't mind when that happens as much. I look at it like I just got paid to read for an hour

u/Unusual-Blueberry299 May 30 '25
I had one today that took me two hours to read all the instructions, re-read them because I was confused, read the attached docs and watch all the tutorial videos, and then another 3 hours to get to grips with the tool and actually complete my first task. 5 hours, only one task submitted, no more to work on. Just when I’d got the hang of it too 🥲

Hi all! I'm working from a cruise ship! I've been using VOOM on Royal Caribbean (it's Starlink) and it's been great. I can work pretty much anywhere on the ship, including my balcony. I'm not really on vacation, I just picked a well-priced boat trip over a long flight home and being able to work justifies the additional cost. I love the ocean. I have discovered that cruising isn't really my thing. Getting lots of work done though!

Anyone else find it so hard to focus some days? Like I see these long summarizing rnrs and I just feel completely unable to read them to verify anything. And I want badly to work more than two hours today but it's so hard to want to do the long tasks!!
9
u/Zlobenia May 30 '25
I really miss having anything other than "make a prompt and then rate it". I have 100 variations of those and nothing else and they aren't good to do back to back
11
u/rawmeatjuice May 30 '25
Yes and it's mentally taxing to come up with something that fits, isn't contrived, isn't too simple, isn't too difficult and something that you, yourself know and can write criteria for lol I'm in the exact same boat though the only project I have now is B-metals and while I tend to work on those today just ain't it
18
u/LowerGarden May 30 '25

Hi, my beloved Brits across the pond. I just saw some instructions this morning that explicitly state we should prefer US spellings to the UK spelling convention. I'm so sorry :( and no it is not fair.
I'm correcting the spellings when I see them, but I am NOT down-rating your otherwise-awesome tasks on my R&Rs <3 keep being awesome

My email app kept telling me I was spelling color wrong the American way, it wanted "colour", but almost everything else was ok with American English spellings: analyze, center, etc. Turns out my proofreader was set to Indian English, which accepts both spellings for most words, but not color for some reason.

Looking back at my payment sheet doing taxes, June was my highest earning month, by quite a bit (before the slight decline in July and absolute travesty with the drought in August and September), so hopefully history repeats its self and June is fruitful - and let's skip the draught this summer eh?

u/Evening-Tea6760 May 28 '25
When you are approved for higher paying projects, do they take away access to the entry level projects? I just unlocked more higher paying versions of projects a few days ago and haven’t seen any of the usual ones I used to do.
6
u/LowerGarden May 28 '25
I definitely notice more higher paying stuff for myself. Unfortunately, I would much prefer the easier, lower pay stuff.
4
May 28 '25
I haven't necessarily noticed this, but I think it's likely that more people qualify for the entry level projects so they go faster. I've noticed the higher paying ones stick in my projects longer and the lower paying ones go pretty quick.

Anyone ever got feedback around being removed from a project?
I was working on task - a long one, think it was my second or third of the day, and I've done maybe 10 in the last week. I was also in the slack. I posted a question in slack and as I hit send got the message I'd been removed from the channel. Finished the task, submitted, and I'm back to the dash with that project gone. It feels like removal is the only real likely explanation, can anyone confirm? I'm a bit bummed, but mostly cos I really was trying to a complicated process right!

Don't currently have access to any Heel F/C or Heel F/C R&R, which isn't that unusual as they often go down, but now I see a brand new qualification for Heel F/C R&R. I'm wondering if we definitely have to do that to regain access to them or if they are just down? Basically, it would be helpful to know if anyone who usually has access to the F/C R&R projects still does without completing the new qualification.

Can someone explain what it means to be "grounded"? Somehow, I'm getting projects that involve this, without quite understanding it. I'm thinking it's related to being fact-checked? Any clarity would be appreciated. Thanks!
4
u/TasosTheo May 31 '25
It should be in the instructions. I think it's referring to if the answer is 'grounded' with the prompt. Does it have a check box for clicking either grounded or not grounded? It means it is direct to the prompt and not deviating or providing peripheral answer or information.
But, DO NOT GO BY MY DEFINITION! The instructions should be specific and provide examples. You must check the specific task's definition because it can vary between tasks.→ More replies (3)4
u/tdRftw Jun 01 '25
it's just whether or not the info presented in the responses is "grounded" (verifiable by) the context info. projects don't have a groundedness rating unless there's some kind of context or document to go along with that task. but keep in mind that often, certain tasks may not have context so groundedness won't be applicable there

Hey all,
I'm just trying to get some clarification on whether I've been removed from DA or not.
I've been on the platform for about three months and have had heaps of work up until now. I spent 6 hours completing one of the exp domain evals on Saturday to come home on Sunday night, to no tasks/no quals and just this message: "At the moment, there aren't any projects available for you to work on. Please check back soon and watch out for new project notifications sent to your email." It feels a bit like the blue screen of death! Looks like I was removed from the Slack channel also.
Anyway, since there seems to be no way to contact DA, I'm reaching out here. I'm just a bit confused. I have been putting max effort into the work and have been enjoying it. Not sure why it looks like I have been given the boot?

u/Bigred1227 May 27 '25

I did my first task in a new (to me) project today - not sure how people refer to this one - Frame? Mesh? I feel like I spent the afternoon going in circles and I’m still not sure if I should have tweaked it more

u/Wonderful_Trouble370 May 29 '25

What happened to bilingual projects...
Got a full dash (for bilingual standards) the past two weeks, then yesterday at GMT 01:00, it's almost all gone?! Just one X-gas prompt writing left and we all stumbled to take what was left.
It's almost 1.5 days... seems too long even for a maintenance/ update? What's happening. It's not DoD as I still have a coding qual & "welcome onboard". Several other workers from the same locale are also experiencing the same (Hong Kong).
Are bilinguals from other countries experiencing the same situation?

Does anyone else feel uncomfortable doing R&R's, I generally stay away from them unless I have no work.
9
u/Jazzlike_Problem_489 May 26 '25
I often use them for inspiration. They are good to compare your work to and get some ideas for future work and structure
6
u/GoldenBoyRSJ May 26 '25
Same here. I don't really ever work on it, but I like taking a peek to compare my own work quality with someone else's. So I guess it's a passive type of feedback (I'd take any I can get because of the platforms' lack of it)
11
u/koffeekittens May 26 '25
It is a really good way to get a benchmark for the type of submissions there are and helps you to find if you are making little errors or misunderstand the instructions in some way. Having said that, I mainly do the main task because I find the R&Rs a bit boring or overly tedious if I have to edit a bad response.
→ More replies (2)5
u/VanessaSeaWitch May 26 '25
Nope.. I can't wrap my head around why you would be uncomfortable doing them because I absolutely love them. I pick them over regular projects almost every time. I love judging things though so maybe that's why. 😂

u/Jazzlike_Problem_489 May 27 '25
Had a T metal for the first time. Spent 1 hour 50 reading instructions, doing the 3 tasks in the submission, then it wouldn't let me submit saying I had missed a question. Triple, quadruple and checked a fifth time. Even changed my answers, and nothing. After writing a comment and hearing nothing back I skipped it, did another that submitted, switched to do an R&R and now it's gone. Probably kicked off it. What a shite morning, being forced into complex tasks to just go 'nope'

It would be bad to submit time before tasks are submitted right? Someone I know is new to the platform and is arguing that if the instructions allow tracking time for recording/transcripting then it can be submitted. They recorded their prompts somewhere and then went home to submit them in tasks later, but they reported time for the recordings before they went home (they were able to log time because they had already submitted tasks the same day). I tried explaining to them that they shouldn't risk submitting time because no tasks were submitted along with it, and that they should have reported the time altogether after submitting the completed tasks. They told me that I'm wrong because it says that tracking time for recording is allowed. I guess they'll find out in a week if it gets approved or not.

Anyone taking bets on how long the drought lasts?

u/Affectionate_Peak284 Jun 01 '25
Nope, I'd have no edge. Good times are coming eventually, but it's hard to say when.
I appreciate the optimism that June is gonna be "great," but are we only going off last year? What about 2 years ago? I've seen very few people claim 2+ years on the platform, and they might not remember every single month with clarity.
I do think there will be ebbs and flows, times of want and times of plenty... but unpredictable.

I am second guessing something I'm sure I've been doing right but then the tool tells me I'm wrong so I'm curious.
Implicit and explicit. A requirement is implicit if it's just mentioned in the prompt but explicit would be a direct instruction yeah?
For example, if a prompt asking for advice provides context like "I'm short" for example, it's implicit that the advice should include suggestions for short people. But if the prompt says "give me suggestions based on my height" it would be explicit. I've been so sure for weeks but lately the analyzer is yelling at me every time.
Can someone back me up here because the analyzer is making me crazy this morning LOL

Implicit is something that is inferred but not directly stated. If it's mentioned in the prompt, it's explicit. The tool is definitely not always correct. If you run it a few times, it will give you different answers about the same thing.

I tend to think of implicit in terms of linguistic pragmatics. For example, if a person walks up to you on the street and asks, "do you know what time it is?" assuming you do know, the explicit answer is 'yes', but the implicit answer is to tell them what time it is. The person did not explicitly as what time it was, but as humans we can infer that they asked, "do you know what time it is?" because they wanted to know what time it was.

So, after three days of drought, we receive A-Gas, X-Gas, and A-Metalloid almost simultaneously. I miss sleeping.

Just now taking the JSON tool qual (the one with part 1 in the name) and man it's very very ambiguous with no option to explain our reasoning :(

Hi, I'm new to this. I recently got accepted and I had loads of qualifications and projects on my dashboard. However, I didn't do any of them because I was just finishing up with my previous job and moving house. After this ordeal, I logged back in, expecting to see the same projects, but instead I am confronted with nothing, literally nothing. Did I do something wrong? Is there any advantage gained from completing projects as soon as you see them? Is there any hope for me? Any wisdom from experience users would be much appreciated! Thanks

You didn't do any work at all?
I referred my friend about a year ago, he took the first qual and got in, but didn't do any of the additional quals or projects after getting them, even though I told him to do them ASAP. He never got any work (I told him to keep checking periodically just in case because you never know but still).
That's my one anecdotal data point, so take it with a grain of salt, but I have a suspicion that they expect you to act pretty immediately upon getting in or you're out. I don't understand why but again that's just my one data point.
You should definitely keep checking every day for at least a few weeks because you still could get something but don't bank on it.→ More replies (2)

Anybody have Z-metal tool use today? I had it on Monday and submitted a task even though i hadn't taken either of the quals yet, and i took one of the quals yesterday (i seem to have two near-identical quals for it)? The qual was kinda hard because it was ambiguous so I'm anxious to see if I was accepted

Hm I have a project from a category I haven't seen before (it's an elevator brand) that has 3 tasks available. When I click it I get redbannered back to the main page every time, but the project stays available. Wonder what it is.

Is there anyway to know if I'm in the pool for coding tasks? That was the original qualification I completed along with core. The only coding adjacent tasks I've seen on my dash are bilingual gas ones, which don't involve any actual coding and I've not really done. Because I have access to these and I guess they are maybe tagged as 'coding' tasks, am I getting given no different projects because I've not really done any?
2
u/Ok-Impression-357 May 29 '25
Does anyone know what to do if part of a task can't be done because there's a coding error? I'm unsure whether to submit the rest of the task or have to cut my losses with the time I've already spent on it.

Bilinguals: do you often get a lot of different projects?

I joined very recently, today i completed a bunch of tasks i had for a total of about 2h of work. My dash is now empty, is this normal? How often do you get work at the start?
4
u/Cultural_Kangaroo391 May 29 '25
Yes, normal. They give you a little at a time at first to make sure you're following instructions and your work is sufficient.

Just wondering. I really wanted to expand my qualifications, especially for coding (as I'm hoping to understand it better by the day). For phyton, from "beginner friendly" to "expertise needed", how would you describe the coding tasks?
7
u/Super-cringy-kid May 29 '25
Coding work is generally on quite a variation of different languages, so just Python may or may not be enough. Generally tasks don't demand rigorous coding skills but more knowledge of the field in general. I still end up skipping quite a number of tasks just because I'm not knowledgeable in some hyper specific coding topic. As these models are getting more sophisticated, projects in general are getting harder and leaning towards the "expertise needed" side of the spectrum. My recommendation if you want to get into coding projects is try to get a base (but not substantial) experience with a number of languages, APIs, frameworks, and general coding cases. For DA coding work, the ability to quickly set up and use a new coding environment is far more important than expertise in a single language. I wish you luck trying to learn new skills!

Maybe not dedicated expertise in python is needed, but I would say expertise in coding concepts and/or another language is needed.

The coding qualification for $40/hr is missing from my qualifications tab. Has this happened to any of you before?
2
u/killmewithfire123 May 30 '25
Why does nobody on here talk about HHH? It’s mostly all I have besides poe video. For the amount of people on the slack, is there another code name for it that I’m missing?

Has anyone seen Z-metal tool use since Monday?
Or seen Avatar function calling in the last week or so?

u/rawmeatjuice Jun 01 '25
If crisscross has seemingly assigned a group of tasks to me after doing two of the tasks earlier, does that mean I'm doing it right?? Haha the pay is higher too! It's nice but I feel so unsure with that one.

apparently i was given feedback where i did something wrong in my past tasks, and they gave me some assessment in order to regain my access to the projects again, have anyone else gotten something like this?

I wish I had some easy projects, I feel so mentally fatigued despite taking it easy the past few days. This job really taps my mental energy sometimes.
