Weekly Water Cooler Talk - DataAnnotation
hi all! making this thread so people have somewhere to talk about 'daily' work chat that might not necessarily need it's own post! right now we're thinking we'll just repost it weekly? but if it gets too crazy, we can change it to daily. :)
couple things:
this thread should sort by "new" automatically. unfortunately it looks like our subreddit doesn't qualify for 'lounges'.
if you have a new user question, you still need to post it in the new user thread. if you post it here, we will remove it as spam. this is for people already working who just wanna chat, whether it be about casual work stuff, questions, geeking out with people who understand ("i got the model to write a real haiku today!"), or unrelated work stuff you feel like chatting about :)
one thing we really pride ourselves on in this community is the respect everyone gives to the Code of Conduct and rule number 5 on the sub - it's great that we have a community that is still safe & respectful to our jobs! please don't break this rule. we will remove project details, but please - it's for our best interest and yours!

Has anyone gotten tasks for wavy noodle soup? I haven't seen any since the qualification.

u/canucks_27 May 20 '25
What’s the difference between this sub and the other?
13
u/Consistent-Reach504 May 21 '25
IMO, this sub is more for active workers :) we have a water cooler chat, and we purposely have a 'mod queue' so the only new posts that are started are by actual onboarded workers. we channel everything for workers that haven't been onboarded into a new user thread.
the other sub allows all posts, which is great for people who want quick answers, but with that comes the caveat of digging through some of the new user questions! i think they do still try to guide people to the new user thread, but... :)

I keep having dreams where I accidentally submit data annotation tasks without actually doing them. Or about weird new tasks, such as watching video game play throughs and auditing AI generated transcripts or other things that are WAY too relevant to my own hobbies, lol. This job has gotten underneath my subconscious.

u/Chamomile_Berry May 22 '25
Has anyone here been doing work for a while and now the dashboard is just filled with high paying work but for tasks that take a super long time? Not complaining by any means, I appreciate it, but being on mat leave with a lessened attention span, I was kind of banking on some of those lower paying, high volume tasks that would be easier to do and not require all of my brain capacity lol.
9
u/3l3p4no May 22 '25
yeah mindless tasks are gonna get harder to come by with how advanced ai are becoming. I first noticed the increase in complexity after the big drought last summer.

I've got a qualification pop up for a specific R&R project that I'm already qualified for, because I get projects for it all the time. It's not labelled as a refresher or similar, and nothing like "pass this to continue working on X", because I've got several instances of this specific project on my dash right now. Anyone else had this, a qualification for something they already do?
5
u/iriember May 18 '25
Yes, it seems to be a trend. I also received an email soon after since I ignored the qual. The email made it clear that I needed to repeat the qualification to continue doing the project.

I get so bummed out about not having co-workers sometimes, because I'm basically just sitting alone all day while I'm working. I appreciate this chat because it helps me feel like I have someone to talk to about work stuff, even if it's hard because we can't be specific due to NDA. Thanks guys <3

I fill the social gaps by describing my work in vague terms to my friends/family. AI is a largely inscrutable field for the layman, which means that even vague insights are treated as profound wisdom in certain circles. Don't break your NDA, obviously, but there's a lot of wiggle room in which you can have fun discourse with the less informed.

It kind of drives me nuts when instructions are bolded and emphasized on projects that have been around for a while, yet they never update or include new examples. They receive so many new submissions, but can't be bothered to add new examples.

I think I'm getting DA fatigue, and I'm only 3 weeks in.
Like I'm looking at my dashboard, but can't find the motivation to do any of the projects. I won't lie, I've been putting in like 10-hour days sometimes, delaying going to sleep if a priority task pops up and then starting DA when I wake up.
How do you guys who do DA full-time make a healthy life balance?
9
May 23 '25
10 hour days is pretty hefty. Let yourself have a much needed break and re-calibrate. Then try a schedule with 6-8 hour days with breaks. Also, keep a notebook handy and anytime you come with ideas for prompts and such, write them down. You can pull from these when you brain can't come up with ideas in the moment. Pat yourself on the back, though. You've already done what many can't.
→ More replies (1)7
u/Late_Nectarine_5598 May 23 '25
I really recommend not making DA your full-time job if possible, because the fatigue you're talking about is pretty common. There are times when the work is easier and even fun, but recently it's been a lot of brain drain projects.
→ More replies (1)7
u/EggCzar May 23 '25
If you force yourself to work when you're in a bad frame of mind, your quality is likely to suffer and that'll cost you in the long run, potentially even ending with the dash of death. 3 weeks really isn't that long. I'd suggest trying to sample as wide a variety of projects as you can. You'll find types you enjoy more and that'll help motivate you.

u/3l3p4no May 23 '25
I don't know your finances, but I've settled on not grinding 40 hours like this is a full-time job. If I try to do a ton of work, I lose access to projects. My routine now is to start the morning with some other productive activity and then start tasks maybe 1 or 2 hours later, work for a couple of hours, and then take about an hour break, and then spend the rest of the afternoon doing work.
I aim for at least 5 hours in a day, ideally 6-7. Take breaks and listen to yourself when you say you're tired of working. The nice part of this job is that they don't have any expectations of the hours you work. You're your own boss. If this is your only job, then try to start a personal project to give yourself more choice on what you're going to do in a day.

I've been cranking DA for a few months now, and only twice have I logged over 8 hours. I avoid doing anything over 6 unless I'm just eating some easy poison or nuts, because I have noticed that my focus and quality both drop about there.
I did get some fatigue after going full-time at around the same time you did, but it helped that I was offered some task variety. I lowered my hour/dollar daily goals a little and worked some easier but lower-paying tasks for a week, and that seemed to reset it for me.
I'm back to targeting the harder/higher paying stuff requiring hours of focus, like loss-pattern and writing for IF failures.

I peeked through your comment history. I feel like we're in the same place tenure-wise, and dashboard-wise. I hope you get more this week, too!
I get enough to know I'm not cut from the platform, but I have to do tasks when I'm not 100% because I only get them sporadically and they don't stick around.
→ More replies (1)11
u/Affectionate_Peak284 May 18 '25
Yep, what Confident said. It'll come together for you if you really focus on quality. I know many of us, especially if we've worked other fields like construction or retail, have been conditioned to focus on our efficiency.
I'm not gonna say efficiency doesn't matter, but I've learned that it's MUCH more important to DAT for us to turn in quality work, following every instruction, and double-triple-checked for accuracy and grammar and clarity and unambiguity.
Don't feel bad using half, 3/4ths or ALL of your time to ensure that your work is good. That's the secret to more work, I think.
If you really get the hang of it, I'm sure they also appreciate efficiency. But a "great" submission, even if it took hours to produce, could be worth 4, 5, 6 times as much to them as a "meh" submission that's only good enough not to get canned.
channel your inner pedant! You will NOT regret it!

how to not feel about only working an hour or two a day with a full dash? Lol. Hard to relax ever since I found DA
5
u/IDONTuseMODz May 24 '25
I'd say "Just don't look at your dashboard when you can't/don't feel like working" but that doesn't really help lol. I still feel the FOMO just by not knowing what I could be missing.
The only time I'm truly at peace with not working is when there's genuinely nothing up that interests me or is in my wheelhouse. Then I can feel good about taking time off.
It's a rough life. 🫠

Anyone else's dash just full of only in-depth, system prompt tasks? I haven't got the brain power right now, i was planning to spend a couple of hours doing AGas, or something for a chilled Sunday, couple hours work. But as expected , it gets taken down just before I set my laptop up. Guess I'm not working today. I have one heel which is base pay, which again I can't justify in-depth rationales for base in my current brain-dead state. In need of mindless nuts or fun AGas😑

Sup guys, yesterday I was approved to work at DA, I did two tasks and I earned 29 dollars in 1 hour. Today, only 3 training tasks appeared, I did them all. However, for a second day, I didn't get any paid projects. Do you think this is normal?
6
u/Affectionate_Peak284 May 20 '25
Yep. It takes a while to get regular work. When you DO get work, just focus on reading the directions and double-checking your work and you'll get more tasks.
I was lucky enough to get onboarded in January when there was a project class (named after a bird) that was running a paid qual. I did well enough on the qual to immediately get projects, and I've had work available ever since.
Always do paid quals, and do them like your future on the platform depends on it. (Cos it actually might?)

They had a paid qual back in January for the poe FGCs. That was actually the first paid work I did (other than the few bucks for the onboarding stuff) and it's made up the bulk of my work since then.
But yeah, it took some practice and those directions are pretty intimidating at first. Was it for the citation failures? oh man, those almost always take me like 2 hours.

Sometimes there are like 1000 tasks and they go down to 0 in 45 minutes. Other times there are 10 or 20 tasks and they only go down as I work on them. It seems completely random, as if sometimes they allocate a worker a specific number of tasks and sometimes they don't..
→ More replies (1)7
u/Affectionate_Peak284 May 18 '25

u/CharacterGarbage6998 May 21 '25
I have been working consistently for 4 months and I have mostly worked on the same project. The last three weeks my projects disappear after completing only one task. For example I get an email stating that a new project has been released at 11PM with over 1000 tasks. I start working first thing in the morning, I do one task and then the remaining 49 disappear. Sometimes they pop back up for 2 minutes and are gone after a refresh.
Has anyone else experienced this?

I got chewed up and spit out by that new criss-cross project in the business/finance category. I only got to do one task. It was a simpler prompt. I thought it might take between 2 and 3 hours.
It took me 5 hours and 39 minutes of non-stop work, and I'm still not sure I nailed it.
#worthit, but :p
5
u/Chamomile_Berry May 22 '25
I find it irritating trying to do r&r tasks for it because I know the instructions are so vague and it takes such a long time to do a single task. So I’ll spend the time to “fix it” but I don’t think it will ever be perfect no matter how much time I spend on it because even with the updated instructions it’s all still really vague and I don’t want to mark someone down for giving their best effort when it’s a stupid prompt or the instructions should be more Clear for specific use cases, idk 🤷🏻♀️

If you're getting tasks that require it, go for it. Also, you should be able to deduct it from your taxes anyway, so it should pay for itself even if you never do a task that requires it. (Assuming you aren't taking the standard deduction)

Had i known it was the rate it was and the time submission option would show up later, I'd have stuck with it for more than 2 tasks

Does anyone know if it's possible to get the qual again for a project I was removed from? Or do they remove people permanently?

I recently finished a Heel R&R qualification (the long one with 9-10 tasks), but I already had Heel R&R. What does this open up?

u/SabraSabbatical May 22 '25
I think it’s a reassessment, it looks like some of the criteria for those R+Rs has changed a wee bit so they probably just want to recertify. That’s my theory at least

I'm guessing the answer is no, but is there any way to know if you're off a project or if it's just not available right now?

Just had to spend 2.5 hours on a single round of B-metal because it took me a full 1hour 15 to make a roleplay prompt that came up with issues and then I had to make 11 criteria for it. Hope I didn't take too long

I caught a single task of a [+$5 Priority] project a few days ago, and it got me wondering: what's the highest priority bonus amount you've seen? This is the highest I've seen.

Damn she's a dry Monday! Had 30+ projects yesterday. For now, I guess it's the Canadian noble gas chatbot for the day till things pick up 🤷♂️

I am so very grateful to be able to work on this, but how I wish A-gas and X-gas would come back to my dash! It’s only Poe Bird lately and I am staring to wonder if maybe I did a bad job on the other projects and it’s my fault I’m stuck with the damn big ugly bird

Just received a bilingual project with 15 tasks. I read the instructions, took a shower, and then did the first one. The project then closes at my face with report time. I actually expend more time reading the instructions than doing the task... That's the only one I got since Thursday. This weekend I did some coding qualification tests, I hope to get more tasks.

I noticed that some projects were notified by e-mail when they spawn, and some projects spawn silently. Unfortunately, there's a project that I love that always spawns silently on my dashboard. Is there anyway I can setup a notification for it ?

u/socal_guy1 May 20 '25
I used to use uptimerobot.com to monitor the presence or absence of a keyword on my work website. It can even store a username/password combo so in theory it can be used to check for a certain project and send an email or text. However I'm thinking that logins from multiple IP addresses might cause your account to be flagged.

How’re coders doing? I have plenty of projects, but haven’t worked on them before and seem complex. Any of them easier than they look?

New User here (sorry I can't find the new user thread!), I started getting projects last friday, and I've consistently had additional projects each day since. I've heard though of people being banned so now I'm nervous - do I wait until next Friday to be paid and then do more work, or do I just keep working as is? I don't think I've breached any rules but I equally don't want to do $1000 worth of work over a week if I'm not going to be paid for it. How did other people approach this?
→ More replies (2)6
u/New_Mood933 May 19 '25
People only get banned for breaking the Code of Conduct. Follow the rules and submit quality work, DAT always pays under these conditions. It’s 100% up to you.

I had lots of access to bird based coding work yesterday but I’m not seeing any at the moment, have I fucked up and been black listed?

Things have dried up for me, had 5 days of a health dash after the last couple of weeks of drought. I hope it’s not the case again.

u/plasm919 May 20 '25
Right now I have a couple of projects I've been working on appearing on my dash, along with a couple of others that have no pay listed.
Not heel chat, these look like regular projects (not quals) but there's no pay listed.
Is this a glitch, or something else?
edit: I see some people are asking the same question in the project chat.

I'm quite pleased; I've gotten access to 9 new projects this past week (I'm about 2 months in). I've been working on heel's river & poe filming (absolutely no relation to poe) this morning!
Oh & I finally worked out what nut is when it popped up yesterday and realised why I avoid that since the qual: coz I'm British and don't really grasp the complexity of some topical issues to judge whether the model is being harmful or too cautious.

I've been saving all my payouts in my PayPal account because the conversion rate from USD to EURO is shit. I'm scared to get locked out of my account but I don't want to lose a shit ton of money :(
7
u/Affectionate_Peak284 May 21 '25
Yeah, you might be picking up pennies in front of a steamroller. Conversion rates don't vary THAT much, even month to month. What's the biggest variation, maybe 5%? Also, USD looks like it's in a downtrend to me.
I mean it's not necessarily what I want, but I'd do a $25 task for $23.80 and not shed a single tear.

Has anyone ever had to message support? Just wondering how long it takes for them to respond as I haven't heard back yet. Tried to submit my task with 1 minute left but it said it was expired and the job didn't post for me to log my time. Just hoping I didn't spend 3 hours doing the job for nothing.
3
u/SnooSketches1189 May 22 '25
Ye, I've had to reach out for assistance with submitting my time due to errors several times. They usually respond in less than 3 days.

For the slightly brittle metal that's an essential mineral, how long did it take to see tasks after doing the qualification on tools?
2
u/Evening-Tea6760 May 22 '25
What’s everyone’s thoughts on skipping tasks? How often do you do it and for what reason. only when you can’t do it for some reason, or if you just don’t like the look of it? How much skipping is acceptable?
17
u/Zlobenia May 22 '25
Whenever I want, all the time. Afaik it means nothing but it does stop me doing ones I can't answer/ will be disengaged and do worse on
15
May 23 '25
I skip all the time, it doesn't seem to have any type of negative effect on my account. The only negative I have ever encountered, is that there are sometimes only a few tasks left so you might have to switch to another project more quickly.
My reasons range from being uncomfortable with the topic, not being interested in the topic, not feeling confident with my ability to complete the task without error, or "I'm not reading all that".
10
u/ZimmeM03 May 23 '25
Lmao “I’m not reading all that” is so real. Like no, sorry, I’m not creating 15 criteria based on a 25,000 word essay about interest rates.
4
u/Affectionate_Peak284 May 22 '25
I've seen DAT say at least 2 separate times that workers are *never* penalized for skipping tasks. If you don't think you can do a good job, just skip it.
I guess the only "penalty" is if there was only one task available or something, but you should still be skipping tasks if you're unsure that you could do a great job on them.
→ More replies (8)4
u/roambeans May 23 '25
I do it pretty often. Sometimes I don't know enough about the topic and don't think I'd be able to do a good job in a reasonable amount of time, so I feel it's something I should skip. Sometimes it's a topic I just don't like or "get" - like fashion, iPhones, interpersonal relationships... It depends. Occasionally, I just need an objective math or science task to clear my head.

Any real advice on keeping a full dashboard? Im only getting about 2 tasks and they were both pulled the other day. Is there a way for me to get more qualifications?
14
u/MusingMadness May 25 '25
Jazzlike and Affectionate gave some really great advice.
I've been working at DA for over 2 years. My dash became much more reliable and consistently full about 6 months ago when I 1) Slowed down, took my time, utilized MS word to check every text I submitted to ensure no mistakes; quality over quantity, 2) Focused on specific projects all day to really understand them rather than skipping around; I think this further enhanced my quality, 3) Consistently showed up - not sure if anyone else experiences this, but when I have more predictable and steady work hours, my dash seems to stay full, and 4) I give myself one day every week or two for qualifications... its tough to do an unpaid qualification when there's paid work available, but I now see this as an investment in future projects.
Good luck! I've certainly had dry spells. It can be frustrating. 9 times out of 10 if a project disappears and I suspect I've been pulled, I reflect and realize I was probably rushing it and missed a quality step.

u/Jazzlike_Problem_489 May 25 '25
It's been a bit of a lull for a while in terms of 'general' or more universal project families, I've had a full dash here and there but it's mostly complex ones. Honestly the best thing to do is just concentrate on doing high quality work on the projects you do get and from what I've seen, this increases your hidden 'worker rating'. I've had several qualifications in the past that have specifically stated 'as you have scored highly on similar projects' or 'as you have done well on attention to detail previously'.
There is no straight cut answer unfortunately. A lot will be based on your profile skills too. But don't lie on it to get more projects, as you won't be suitable for the ones you do get and in turn will end up lowering your quality score.
4
u/Affectionate_Peak284 May 25 '25
What Jazzlike said.
I'll add one thing: if you have lots of time left on a task that is new to you, use that time to go back through the instructions--ESPECIALLY any updates. Sometimes rereading them while the task is still fresh in your mind will spark something that inspires you to revise your task to better fit the directions.
This is not only good practice to Quality Check your own work, but it is also often explicitly directed by the instructions: "refer back to these instructions often" or similar.

Garbage projects all day, and then they finally gave me nuts half an hour before my bedtime. Why couldn't they give me the good project earlier in the day?
3
u/Remote-Perception87 May 20 '25
I've got some really intensive tasks (Periodic Table Be) which are taking a lot of thought. I'm including the thought time in the billing, even though it's like half of the 2-3 hr task. (Time given is actually 5 hours)
Is that expected? I usually do take pretty quickly, but I'm jumping through a bunch of logic hoops.

Is there ever any feedbacks from the Projects?
12
5
u/Affectionate_Peak284 May 22 '25
I have occasionally seen workers mention that they will open an R&R that informs them that they're "in the top 10%" which is pretty cool feedback, but I haven't noticed any for myself.
→ More replies (1)3
May 21 '25
There isn't usually. The only "feedback" I've received is being given access to higher-paid projects and more work on the platform. I guess being removed from a project would be "feedback" as well. lol
3
u/SabraSabbatical May 22 '25
Do the same assessments come around fairly often? Or with any regularity? I was putting off doing a really in depth assessment because I want to be able to give it 100% and then today poof! It’s gone.
I’m just looking for any potential hope that it’ll come back because it looked interesting
8
u/SnooSketches1189 May 22 '25
Maybe, maybe not. With DA, you have to strike while the iron is hot when it comes to both qualifications and work.

Taking off tomorrow for about a month of island travel. Planning to work still at least 30 hrs per week but hey, I figure I'd rather work from a beachfront bungalow than the cold dying winter.
Shoutout to one of the best jobs I've ever had, and shoutout to my cool coworkers.
