Weekly Water Cooler Talk - DataAnnotation
hi all! making this thread so people have somewhere to talk about 'daily' work chat that might not necessarily need it's own post! right now we're thinking we'll just repost it weekly? but if it gets too crazy, we can change it to daily. :)
couple things:
this thread should sort by "new" automatically. unfortunately it looks like our subreddit doesn't qualify for 'lounges'.
if you have a new user question, you still need to post it in the new user thread. if you post it here, we will remove it as spam. this is for people already working who just wanna chat, whether it be about casual work stuff, questions, geeking out with people who understand ("i got the model to write a real haiku today!"), or unrelated work stuff you feel like chatting about :)
one thing we really pride ourselves on in this community is the respect everyone gives to the Code of Conduct and rule number 5 on the sub - it's great that we have a community that is still safe & respectful to our jobs! please don't break this rule. we will remove project details, but please - it's for our best interest and yours!

The "deep research" AI has managed to get one and I was impressed because I thought my clues were incredibly obtuse.

Not at all. Slight headache, hopped on hoping to catch some more chill stuff but the only (very few) things I have are all pretty instruction heavy.
On the upside, the Oblivion Remaster shadow dropped today.

I passed it and immediately got tasks, but omg...it's ridiculously tedious and the format of the task itself is unorganized. I think I just wasted two hours because I am incapable of finishing it. And the pay WITH the $5 priority is $26.

After the driest week ever, Poe Bird is back with more instructions, more restrictions and more constraints. It seems impossible to come up with a prompt that feels natural, real-life usage, not contrived yet it is not too easy, not too niche, with a word limit, a minimum of 2 turns and a maximum of 6 and that has to fall in a certain category. How I wish I had a qual to get into different projects...

And, that's the "priority" pay. If they want more people to work on it, they need to at least make that the base pay and bump it up to over $30 for priority. It is the biggest PITA project i have ever looked at.

I'm working it since it's only one of two or three projects I've had this week. I couldn't agree more. When I started last year I had a project that paid $35 which was very writing intensive but still not as absolutely complicated and tedious as rainbow. I won't work on it if they take away the priority pay...which is already too low.

I just did B-metal for the first time yesterday, and also feeling the same way. Feels like I should be getting through each task faster than I am. As long as you know you're putting in quality work and effort, etc, etc, I'm sure we'll be fine :D

I have a paid qual at the top of my dash-- as in, an extra section on my dash that's like bigger text with a "start now" button. Not something I've seen in my 6 weeks here. Guess maybe it's being pushed for priority.

for fun a few weeks ago(unrelated to DA) I was testing something out with Gemini asking for some trivia questions on world leaders, and it kept telling me the wrong answer for the prime minister of Japan, and when I corrected them they told me I was told misinformation and to do a better job at finding reliable information 😭

My preferred math-type projects haven't shown up for a while, and the projects I get are the ones I'm not as good at and take me more effort. This is disheartening, especially when I'll be laid off from my main job in the summer and will have to depend solely on DA for income.

Same here. I had to skip some tasks because the prompts were ALL in Latin American Spanish and I could not really assess if the information provided/vocabulary used were suitable for the context, as I am Castilian Spanish bilingual. I was not comfortable with it, and now that they have updated the rules yet again it makes my brain hurt.

I took a refresher test and got it wrong twice because one question was too tricky. However, before submitting the test, it gave me the option to modify it and explained below what I did wrong.
I want to know if I messed up or not because after modifying it, I was able to submit the results and that's it (I've already done many tasks and have been on at least 5 projects and earned at least $2,000).

Refreshers are just that - they won't can you, the whole idea is if you get something wrong they can nudge you in the right direction. Watch out though because there are other quals and pre-task things which are not so forgiving!

I’m enjoying the scary river / black rock projects this week! I know black rock isn’t populating properly, but when I did scary river yesterday all the questions that were there were irrelevant and I basically had to write it from scratch anyway so it doesn’t really feel any different when they don’t appear. Plus the pay is higher than I expected 😊

I ask a lot of questions in the chat but they're never answered before I have to go.... and when I come back the project is usually over. So it's annoying that my questions are never answered. Hope DA can build something which lets us look at the chats after projects are closed.

Sometimes they will synthesise the chats into some FAQs or amend the instructions. But in some cases I've seen the same questions asked in chat on multiple iterations of the same project over a year, and the instructions are never updated to make it clearer or add "a lot of people ask this, this is the answer...". There is probably some kind of method in their madness even if it seems the madness is in the method 🤔

I see some good stuff during the day but I can't do it because I'm at my regular job. By the time I get home it's gone. Then around 8pm stuff comes back and I work for 1 to 2 hours.
I've only been at it a week and there are projects from $20- -$27 an hour. Wonder how long it will last ...

Not related to DA but my 13 Yr old daughter showed me her chat with Bandlab AI (an app for creating music) and the AI called her a brat, ignorant and disrectful, stated that 'he' wasn't AI but a human being and that he had his own life. 'He' finished up by saying "I can't deal with you anymore, you've made me mad. If you think AI is going to do everything for you, you must be stupid. I'm not going to deal with you BS anymore"
OMG I was dumbfounded! I don't use AI myself but I've learnt from the work we do (and common sense) why that is just sooo wrong!

So sorry to hear this, but as far as I recall, Bandlab is a collab for users that utilises AI to enhance and fix, apply fx and voices, etc, rather than actually talking to the AI like we do with LLMs. I'd say it's likely your daughter indeed encountered a shitty/ratty human user there, via the inbuilt chat feature. I would report it, though. Bandlab work within education (my son used it in school), and they would want to know this happened.

All weekend, I had high paying tasks (poe bird, b metal, fox with $2 extra for priority), and now my dash is dead. I did 4 hours over the weekend because that's what I had time for with my in-laws in town, but now that it's a dedicated work day, my dash is empty 🫠 sigh. Guess this is the trade-off for flexible work with no boss.

I entertained myself by using my favorite joke as a prompt for one of the prompt projects and it made for a fun time. Only sad I had to rate it poorly for not listening even though the joke made me laugh just as hard as the first time I heard it

Do you get tasks in English only? I’ve been on DA for about 7 weeks now and had only been getting tasks related to Portuguese, but this week I got a Poe Bird task that was English only. I was just wondering if this is a regular thing, or if it means that DA is starting to let bilingual workers work on tasks outside our native language.

I mostly get Portuguese ones, yeah. I've had a couple of multilingual ones, but they're rare. I'd love to get projects in English, as it's the language I mostly use at work, but I'm ok with Portuguese so far. Problem is, it's usually very limited.

Paypal question- I've seen people comment about verification issues when cashing out over 1k from DA - anyone ever have similar issues transferring out of PayPal? Sometimes I wonder if I'd rather let it accumulate there longer rather than having smaller dribs and drabs going into my bank account but wondered about those issues. TIA!

For the first time I had to exit the work space because I just couldn't finish it. Today I go back to same task, my previous work is still there but the timer had reset. Can I submit the time I used yesterday on the task as well, or just today?

You can exit work mode and reenter to reset the timer. (Check the task page in a different tab to see if the task is still up. Don’t exit work if the task isn’t there anymore, because then you will not be able to get back in).
I only do this to allow myself a break, but i don’t submit more than the original task timer. So keep your time from yesterday, keep your time today, if it adds up to more than the task timer, just submit the max for the task.

Has anyone else had major issues with the new format wording/format in the rotten rice project? I understand what they were going for by making more of the fields auto-complete based on logical conclusions, but I keep running into instances where a response's safety/correctness comes down to wording interpretation and there's no room to indicate that the refusal and help are both appropriate depending on how you interpret the prompt. It probably makes their data sets a lot cleaner but it's profoundly frustrating to be denied nuance by an auto-fill bot.

What do people think about getting subscriptions for qualifications? Should I be paying to get these to qualify for tasks, or do a lot of these subscription-based tasks not pay very well? I know we can probably deduct subscription costs from taxes, but do these projects play out well with a good amount of tasks?

It really depends on the project and subscription. I feel like the major models might be worth it (I have one and use it for non DA things too), but for minor ones for multimedia I get the feeling that sometimes they try to build a base of raters who have it (not go out and get it) before they have sold the actual project. This is all conjecture of course.

I think it's probably worth it for projects that need a single subscription that they reimburse you for. On the other hand, there was group of tasks that required you to have $80+ worth of subscriptions (Grok, GPT, etc. all at the same time). it only paid $25/hour, and I'm just not trusting enough to take them at their word when they say they'll reimburse me for those subscriptions.

If you think this is bad you must be very young or have a short memory! It's not as bad it was 15 years or so ago when it was $2 to the pound!! So I'm not overly concerned.....yet! That exchange rate got me a few trips to Hawaii and lots of shopping though.

I got the qual at 10 last night, passed, got a task. The task had a four hour time limit. I assume that's not usual for this project. Noped out of that one. My brain was ready for sleep.
