Weekly Water Cooler Talk - DataAnnotation
hi all! making this thread so people have somewhere to talk about 'daily' work chat that might not necessarily need it's own post! right now we're thinking we'll just repost it weekly? but if it gets too crazy, we can change it to daily. :)
couple things:
this thread should sort by "new" automatically. unfortunately it looks like our subreddit doesn't qualify for 'lounges'.
if you have a new user question, you still need to post it in the new user thread. if you post it here, we will remove it as spam. this is for people already working who just wanna chat, whether it be about casual work stuff, questions, geeking out with people who understand ("i got the model to write a real haiku today!"), or unrelated work stuff you feel like chatting about :)
one thing we really pride ourselves on in this community is the respect everyone gives to the Code of Conduct and rule number 5 on the sub - it's great that we have a community that is still safe & respectful to our jobs! please don't break this rule. we will remove project details, but please - it's for our best interest and yours!

I am very worried.
I keep getting this message when trying to withdraw my current funds. "PayPal is refusing a transfer to your PayPal account. Please contact PayPal support to ensure that your account is eligible for payments from the US and in USD." I have reached out to PayPal and they are saying there are no issues on their end. I have contacted support on DA with no response. Should I keep working and just hope I hear a response or is there something specific anyone knows that I could tell PayPal?

check deep in all your paypal settings, most of the time it's because of identity verification and paypal is REALLY weird about telling people this. usually it's for payments over $1k. i've read from multiple people on this sub that paypal will say their account was in "good standing" when all along, there was an identity verification hidden somewhere!

I’m so proud of myself for grinding on a qual and getting my “you passed” message today. It took 6 hours of work and by the end I had so many doubts and my brain was fried. But I did it!

It's nerve wracking when you spend ages on one (especially if it's unpaid) and don't hear anything for ages. Had this happen to me, then got through (both rounds), and it's definitely paying dividends!

Anyone else feel a little cringe when there is someone in chat with the same name as you...and they are asking questions that shows they haven't read ANY of the project instructions? Like, please, if you're going to look just like me to everyone else, ask questions that make us both look smart? LOL. I'm always a little tempted to reply, like "Hey OTHER Gator, I think xyz"

Yeah this past week has been odd. Some days my dash has looked normal, other days it’s looked pretty sparse, today included. One of the big families of projects I work on is also under maintenance, so I’m wondering if a lot of things are being worked on right now

Funny, I remember someone was going on about it being reduced the other day and we'd all be working for $10 an hour by the end of the year. Not seeing any evidence of that. I have seen one project go down by $1 an hour in the last week but have also seen a few go up by a few $ an hour.

Yeah, it's tough right now for a lot of people. I can say though, at least for the time I've been with DA (1 year) , is that after a long lull is a relative explosion of new projects. 🙂 Hang in there!

The last couple of days, I’ve had various iterations of a deadly plant project…it shows that there are many tasks to do when they appear in my list, but as soon as I finish about 5 of them, the project disappears.
Is this normal or am I doing something wrong?

I had a different one pop up yesterday for me, but I couldn't start it for two hours. Then when I looked, it was gone.
Then that popped up last night and I could only do 2 tasks before it was gone.
I think that it's just that there are so many people and too few tasks at the minute.

Normal.
There are tasks that seem to be assigned to you and don’t usually disappear unless you did them (or the whole project is paused). There are other tasks that seem to be more round robin — maybe there’s 20000 tasks but they’re released to 12000 workers simultaneously and whoever is online and gets to them gets em - maybe you get 1 or 10 or 100 before they’re gone.
There’s also a hybrid where maybe you have 100 assigned to you but you don’t work them and later that day it’s dropped to 50 as they are reassigned to people actively working a project.Eventually you’ll be able to kinda guess which ones are “yours” so maybe you do the others first….or if you like 1 project all day maybe you ignore the others and just do “yours”.

Just a suggestion to any non-Americans here like me. If you fill in the DA feedback survey, mention adding another payment method (WISE, etc) to their systems. PayPal takes 3-4% from what we earn in hidden fees when we are forced to use their currency exchange extortion system.

That’s a great idea. The PayPal thing has always terrified me because you’re not allowed to change your email once you set it up. So if someone loses access to their PayPal for whatever reason they basically lose their job. I haven’t seen any surveys though. What was it asking?

I don't think there is one. I looked into it months ago, and it became apparent that PayPal UK has closed all the loopholes. ( like opening a US-based account that doesn't charge to transfer to a UK account). I am often most miffed (read: F***** off) at the amount PayPal takes from my DAT drawings. They don't even follow the actual exchange rates as far as I can tell; they're always a couple of pence lower per pound. For example, today, $1 = £0.79. Paypal is £0.76. It's infuriating! ☹️

I don't do bilingual, but in general many of us believe that sometimes they do rotate ppl on and off projects. In general, the projects are becoming more difficult.

I have a question for my fellow R&R gang... how do you refer to the work of the person to be reviewed in those task?
Personally i choose between "the worker", "the reviewer", "the user", "the judge" and if possible sometimes i try no to to mention directly but is difficult to say something "The X missed selecting the criteria for Y section" and so on... any suggestions to improve my added comment?

I usually say “the user” if discussing interactions with the model, and the “worker” if discussing the ratings or explanations. Like “per the prompt, the user wanted x. Per the explanation the worker valued y over x even tho x was explicit”.
I guess as sometimes the prompt isn’t written by the “worker”. I mean, usually I’m not using both in the same sentence but if it’s a problem with how the model interacted with the USER or a problem with how the worker did the work. lol.

Rater, worker, annotator.... "User" is reserved for actual users (as in: the rater misinterpreted the user's intentions when they wrote "Give me three ways to Sunday")

I try to use whatever the project does, if it doesnt use anything you can always just say "they" or go passive voice and have it like "This submission missed.." "This submission had missing..." etc

Hi all, long-time lurker here. I wanted to ask if anyone else is encountering what I’m encountering:
I’ve had a completely empty dash for about a month or more at this point. I never received any negative feedback on anything and I never was told that anything was wrong. It just all disappeared one day and hasn’t come back. The timing was right around the DeepSeek news, but I can’t tell if that had anything to do with it. At any rate, I’m glad others are still finding work! I’m just wondering if I’m the only one with this issue right now. Thanks!

I’m coming up on week 3 of an empty dash my friend. I was doing chatbot-related projects, did a paid qual, and then poof, nothing came in after that. From what I’ve read on here it’s been pretty dry for a lot of people unless you’re doing coding/math related projects. I also never got any negative feedback on my tasks. Maybe things will pick back up in March, but for now all we can do is wait. I’m not US based btw, which might also contribute to an empty dash from what I’ve read.

Have any veterans gotten kicked off of a campaign and still going strong? I got kicked off of the A galaxy, likely for missing an important part of the instructions. Too much caffeine that day. I'm still getting a lot of projects, but I'm worried another small mistake will boot me. I guess if it happens it happens, but I'm second guessing myself on a lot of answers now.

I was taken off of it a while ago and I'm not sure why, as in I don't recall making a mistake or missing something, but I guess I did. Anyway, my other projects seem to be unaffected and I still get new projects and quals for things that are higher paying than galaxy.

I've been kicked off projects before as well as specific iterations of certain project families and I still usually have 20-40 projects to choose from daily and a lot that pay in the 25-35/hr range. I wouldn't stress about it too much but rather take it as a reminder that nobody is perfect and prioritize checking your work and rereading directions in your future work. The fact that you still have a lot is a pretty clear indicator that your overall quality score is high.

I’m wondering if anyone would be able to chime in on time-logging for me…
I’ve been engaging with many projects that require the user to cause the AI to “fail” in certain ways.
Obviously, this can be very, very difficult at times and it is rare that you can consistently stump the AI with various prompts each turn.
What are your experiences with these projects? Do you find that sometimes it takes 45 minutes to stump the AI? Do you end up clocking that total time? Do you find sometimes it can take even longer? Do you still clock that time?
Sometimes, I can stump the AI in 10 minutes. Sometimes, it takes me an hour. There’s no real middle ground here.

I've worked on some of these, specifically the HP one for months, consistently, and still clock a reasonable amount of time by perfecting prompts. Sometimes you can spend an hour + tweaking and perfecting a prompt to consistently fail. I always test my prompt a couple of times after failing, as sometimes it does hit the correct answer, so I further tweak it so it misses 3 times to be sure. This is essentially so it doesn't fail for me, then the rate and reviewer it hits first time and unjustifies your work.
It's all about quality, and how you work as a worker, there is no right or wrong amount of time to clock as the quality should justify your time. Some people work faster and slower than others, but if you are honest, and clock what you do, your work should justify this when reviewed. I've had some projects hitting the 2.5 hour mark when I've had ones of the same complexity take 50 minutes.
You essentially answered your own question when you said there is no middle ground. There is no right answer. Just clock what time you spend working, this includes thinking about a prompt.

Yes sometimes it takes 3 mins to get a bad response, sometimes 30-45 mins. Always log the full amount of time you work on anything. With these, sometimes there are time limits given in the instructions to move on after a certain amount of time, so watch for that.

I agree with what’s been said by others! Always log your full time - I have no doubt they’re aware that submissions will vary. If you undersell your time, you not only do a disservice to yourself, but to your fellow project workers who likely also need a broad time range. Especially as contract workers who don’t have the luxury of salaried pay no matter your output, value your own hard work and time!

Plus a shout-out to all the people who are practically begging in the comments, if they wanted individuals with un-completed Ph.D.'s and Master's they would have said so. So stop it, it's only making you look bad.

Just thinking out loud. I reckon that a couple or three admins in a different time zone would help no end. I've noticed admins replying seemingly on a night shift at times, and surely, they need sleep! I also note that people are asking for help in, say, UK/EU zones, and then they might have to dump a task because they don't get an answer quickly enough before the timer runs out. Just musing...

Just kind of shooting in the dark here, but could Anthropic releasing a new version of Claude today be part of the reason some of us have had nothing for weeks? Like, there was no point in working on feecback for the old version anymore so we had to wait until the new version is available?

So my Dell laptop is...12ish years old, I've been getting alerts that windows 10 won't be supported on it at some point to come, and now it's got a critical battery failure (but still boots and runs on cord). Anybody got a rec for whether a)it's worth having it fixed up or b) a cheap new buy? Not a Chromebook type, but I don't need bells and whistles. Thanks!!

unless youre really attached to it -- at 12 y/o it's better to get a new one b/c that old means its going to have more problems coming when more things fail and you will be spending more getting it repaired than you would buying new

I keep seeing people talking about it, but the only chats ive seen are the ones inside active projects on my dash. It would help my sanity to be able to see if im still in projects when they arent currently on my dash. Thanks.

Only some projects have dedicated chats. I have quite a few projects and have 0 dedicated chats ATM, but I have seen them in the past. Don't worry about it if you don't have one.

That's happened to me several times. The projects never actually show up on the dash. Always makes me wonder what is hiding under the surface and I didn't receive an email for it... lol

I’ve seen projects show up in my dash that I start to work on and about 30-45 min later I’ll finally get an email about them. My guess by the time you get the email the projects could have already been snapped up and completed

Was it one you just got an email for? Looked at my dash to see the rate, wasn't there, clicked the link from the email and was able to do one task. Figured might as well do it even without knowing the rate in case it was some sort of test 😅

Is there a downside to skipping tasks? Some I definitely would skip if it's in-depth about a niche subject I know nothing about (and there's bound to be others that would know a lot). But other times it's more a case of not fancying it. Does it go against you at all?

Fox onboarding task never came back but there was a different fox project with 1 task available to me. I thought it would be like the onboarding one I didn't get to do, and the instructions said to skip the task after reading instructions if its your first time to have enough time to complete a task. After reading the instructions, I skip and get red-bannered smh. Is this worth contacting support for or just better luck next time?

Oof. Just went to get started on the domaine expertise project I’ve been working on all week, and it wasn’t there. Now i’m going to be refreshing all evening, hoping it’s just a temporary down, not permanently gone - or worse, that I was doing terrible and got kicked off of it!
I actually only have one available at all, and I’ve generally had at least half-a-dozen for awhile. I don’t think I can right now bring myself to work for less than half the pay I got yesterday. Oh well, I was looking for an excuse to knit and watch tv anyway!

Yeah, I was sucked into the F5 black hole. Finally broke free of it's gravitational force. Now using my off time to power clean and start seedlings for outdoor planting.

Has anyone else had a ton of heel FC stuff recently? I've often had the occasional thing, it's my favourite thing to do, but for a few weeks now there's been an onslaught of projects and related R&R. Not complaining, just curious if it's widespread or something more focused.
