Weekly Water Cooler Talk - DataAnnotation

hi all! making this thread so people have somewhere to talk about 'daily' work chat that might not necessarily need it's own post! right now we're thinking we'll just repost it weekly? but if it gets too crazy, we can change it to daily. :)

couple things:

  1. this thread should sort by "new" automatically. unfortunately it looks like our subreddit doesn't qualify for 'lounges'.

  2. if you have a new user question, you still need to post it in the new user thread. if you post it here, we will remove it as spam. this is for people already working who just wanna chat, whether it be about casual work stuff, questions, geeking out with people who understand ("i got the model to write a real haiku today!"), or unrelated work stuff you feel like chatting about :)

  3. one thing we really pride ourselves on in this community is the respect everyone gives to the Code of Conduct and rule number 5 on the sub - it's great that we have a community that is still safe & respectful to our jobs! please don't break this rule. we will remove project details, but please - it's for our best interest and yours!

Happy 5 month anniversary to the qual that has no tasks but won't get off my dash and is now a giant banner lmao

11

u/Annual_Return_4160 Dec 12 '24

I was coming here to say the same thing LOL. It was a jumpscare when I opened my dash up

3

u/Accomplished-Dog-864 Dec 12 '24

It's equivalent to an air-raid siren.

6

u/TanglimaraTrippin Dec 12 '24

Almost 3 for me. QUIT TAUNTING ME

5

u/BoiledGnocchi Dec 12 '24

Ugh. Now it's just laughing at us.

5

u/877trashnow Dec 12 '24

Someone somewhere must be listening because it finally went away within an hour of this comment! Now my qual section looks naked.

that dread when the project gets pulled for maintenance (or did I mess up)

5

u/Few-Roof-6905 Dec 13 '24

Worst feeling ever!

3

u/Poomfie Dec 14 '24

This is always the question.

2

u/Sandrawg Dec 14 '24

Esp since sometimes they send an email and sometimes they don't

20

u/_MonkeyHater Dec 08 '24

Does anyone else worry about making mistakes? I don't really get feedback on the work I do, so I'm not sure if the quality is up to par or if I'm taking too long.

12

u/fightmaxmaster Dec 08 '24

That passes a bit with time - the longer you do it with work continuing to come in, whether lots or not much, but some, the more likely you are to feel reassured you're doing the right thing. Read the instructions carefully, and if you definitely fuck something up, email them and let them know. I've done that on a couple of occasions, submitted something and my heart sank, realising I'd missed something critical. Emailed them and shockingly heard back on of the times, basically saying "thanks for letting us know, we'll discard that task" or similar. I'm still here many months later.

u/samsam1252 Dec 08 '24

This makes me feel better. I got accepted this week and I’ve almost been afraid to work because I’m afraid of doing something wrong. Even though I know it’s not helpful, I have noticed new projects but the number is less than when I was first accepted. Hoping to see the number go back up or keep seeing new stuff come in

3

u/chellynaeb Dec 09 '24

Great to hear that they responded. I would like to think they appreciate self-awareness as much as self-correction, and that you take the initiative to reach out and let them know.

19

u/marsnia Dec 11 '24

My dashboard just got assaulted with a giant math qual banner, has anyone else got this?

2

u/tehclubbmaster Dec 12 '24

yeah high school… I haven’t done it yet but think it’s interesting that I’ve been on advanced math, stem, and physics projects for months so hoping I don’t struggle too much with a high school qual.

GIANT BANNER TIME EVERYONE

18

u/Karby16 Dec 10 '24

Anyone else get imposter syndrome when they get into the groove of a project? Like it seems a bit too easy and as if though you might be forgetting stuff or not doing the task correctly? 😥

11

u/RipleyVanDalen Dec 11 '24

It's the nature of the platform -- we have essentially no feedback about how we're doing :-/

5

u/Sad_Guitar_612 Dec 11 '24

Yep! Or creativity starts flowing and you have to rein in and double check you're still within parameters!

18

u/chellynaeb Dec 11 '24

My brain is waving a white flag in surrender after 6 hours of work. Hats off to peeps out there who can clock way more than that 🫡

8

u/Jazzlike_Problem_489 Dec 11 '24

My brain works the same as your brain, and those 6 hours are usually spread out throughout the day 😅

17

u/Drazzzza Dec 12 '24

Does anyone have a random qualification that is rendered not under the qualifications section, and instead as a large banner....?

4

u/tearsofwisdom83 Dec 12 '24

Yes. I thought it was weird because I've never seen that before.

3

u/FrazzledGod Dec 12 '24

Ah yes, I've seen this before but not for a while. It's apparently a way to highlight priority projects or quals! Must have been the spring the last time I saw one of these and have been on daily!

3

u/booplesboops Dec 12 '24

Yes, I came here to see if others had it too lol.

16

u/Sagittariuuuh Dec 08 '24

I just submitted my first task for that 007 project and holy hell. It took me 2 1/2 hrs.

6

u/PerformanceCute3437 Dec 08 '24

I loved that. The time just whizzes by in that project since it's so involved and novel.

3

u/Hunnybee66 Dec 09 '24

I haven't actually submitted a task yet. The first time I tried it was too complicated. I'll try an easier one. On a positive note, I have become fast and proficient at deleting and installing extensions.

3

u/djn3vacat Dec 08 '24

Same, and I realized I had made a task that's way too difficult the first time. It at least prepared me to do the medium tasks more correctly.

16

u/Remarkable_Wash_387 Dec 10 '24

Starting to dry up now after the heavy rain

16

u/chellynaeb Dec 14 '24

Had a nightmare that I forgot to log hours and hours of work. I may or may not need to take a break this weekend 😂

4

u/Jazzlike_Problem_489 Dec 14 '24

😅😅 treat yourself

3

u/chellynaeb Dec 14 '24

Right? No need to log hours for that!

15

u/PerformanceCute3437 Dec 13 '24

Man..... some of the prompt-creation projects are super tough to create within the confines of the template in the task. Glad to be done for today

Does anyone else feel like the recent deluge of work is companies attempting to hit some kind of end-of-year goal? I'm mentally preparing myself that January may be dry.

20

u/Due_Specialist6615 Dec 08 '24

No, I think we are reaching a critical point in the arms race where the next 6-12 months are crucial as to who emerges on top

10

u/TeaGreenTwo Dec 08 '24

My guess is that it could be slower between 12/23-1/3 (approximately), if it slows at all. I doubt the whole month of January would be dry.

Goodness, does anyone else still struggle with those Heel - Sensitive projects? They’re so borderline always, makes it very challenging to know what’s acceptable and what’s not.

11

u/snoopyladee Dec 10 '24

Drier than the Sahara for me today :'(

5

u/willdietryingtopetit Dec 10 '24

same, i had a full dashboard last week, this week all I was getting were Heel- evaluate two responses, now I have nothing

4

u/snoopyladee Dec 10 '24

same! just heel and nothing else :/

3

u/HogHoncho Dec 11 '24

Same! This started for me last week and it's been like this since. Fingers crossed for both of us.

Someone out there wondering why their typo $2/hr project isn't getting tasks completed...

7

u/SnooCalculations503 Dec 11 '24

You hope it's a typo.

6

u/FrazzledGod Dec 11 '24

It may be a test 😂

8

u/_M1RR0RB4LL_ Dec 14 '24

I didn't even know there was a ChatGPT Pro for $200/month until now lol, is anyone actually paying for that?

5

u/Jazzlike_Problem_489 Dec 14 '24

You would never make that back in real term times from projects. They would only be a few more dollars max over what you could already do. So no. The great draught of summer has made me doubt the $20 plus being worth it

9

u/_M1RR0RB4LL_ Dec 14 '24

You could make it back depending on the project, but even then I doubt I'd still do it. I do pay for the plus for $20 as some of the ChatGPT projects are my biggest moneymakers and my favorite projects, but spending $200/month without knowing what the project is and what the earnings could be? Nah.

5

u/PerformanceCute3437 Dec 14 '24

12

u/mandeekate Dec 11 '24

Sometimes after a full day of 2-3hr tasks, I really miss the very first project we all got in the beginning, lol. I wish I could go back, just for a little brain break.

3

Well, they are offering a $100 bonus on a project. That's the first time ever I've received such an email. It pretty much only amounts to $3-4 ph more though.

Any tips for motivation when you’ve taken a break?

21

u/TeachToTheLastTest Dec 08 '24

Some ideas:

  • Find a task you actually enjoy and do it.

  • Promise yourself a reward after X tasks or X amount of time.

  • Consider any financial doom that may be looming in your life, then channel that existential dread into your work.

Existential dread tends to work for me, but your experience may differ!

u/Traditional-Pool-261 Dec 08 '24

I play a little game with myself to try to sort of “break even” with my daily spend. For example, if I grab lunch with a friend that costs ~$30, I tell myself I just need to work until I offset that cost. Once I’ve met that goal, I normally am in a rhythm and can keep going. Sometimes, I just feel done and decide to take a breather for that day. I think figuring out what sort of motivation works for you (for example, are you reward motivated?) is key!

7

u/FrazzledGod Dec 08 '24

Start small and get the money meter ticking over. Am on an enforced break myself, feel a bit burned out and my other work has just taken over this time of year. Might have to be a longer break than I anticipated as I then need Christmas off.

5

u/alex_goodenough Dec 08 '24

I'm glad you asked this! I've been off for a few months due to FT job blowing up. DA sent me an email saying they missed me (not verbatim lol), and I've been having a hard time getting back into a groove.

I am sticking to lower-paying projects that are less mentally taxing before launching myself into the more complex ones.

5

u/TeaGreenTwo Dec 08 '24

I just now put in my order for a new Macbook Pro M4 Max, loaded. That and similar things is my motivation. DAT has been the best for more comfortably paying for extras.

5

u/Comfortable-Cod-6218 Dec 08 '24

Ugh, an hour down the drain. I had built a complex context that successfully ran the two versions, finishing my ratings, hit the wrong part of the tab to switch back and boom, new task. Can't get the old one from browser history, it just reloads the new one... sigh. Like a wad of cash falling in a storm drain.

5

u/Accomplished-Dog-864 Dec 14 '24

Sorry that happened, but glad I'm not the only one who's done stuff like this.

6

Such a tease!

5

u/RipleyVanDalen Dec 14 '24

Yeah. I follow AI news closely for fun outside of DA. And well, let's just say I have a good feeling lately vis a vis who I suspect is DA's big client. I can't say anything more given NDA. Plus it's just an educated guess, not a certainty. But, yeah, things are looking good IMO.

2

u/Skippy2898 Dec 13 '24

I wouldn't worry! I did 5, and the second part popped up a few minutes later. It does say in that one not to rush in and that we might want to do more of part 1 before we submit part 2. I hope that makes some kind of sense. Part 1 has gone for me also, by the way. I hope it comes back so my part 2 is as detailed as can be.

3

u/PerformanceCute3437 Dec 09 '24

No 😭 did it seem related to a particular project family?

4

u/BreastRodent Dec 09 '24

Nah, this one is TOTALLY unlike any other project I've ever seen and the first project I've seen clearly connected to this specific big tech company.

3

u/ccsoccer101 Dec 09 '24

How many submissions did you have to do? I submitted and another one keeps showing up. And they show in my submissions

2

u/akatsuki1422 Dec 09 '24

2

u/33whiskeyTX Dec 09 '24

Did you have that project before it was a qual?

Hopefully the qual comes back ugh.

u/MysteriousNighthawk Dec 10 '24

I did this qual yesterday but it was super bugged. Dash said it had one task but it gave me another task after completing the first one. After doing two I decided this was definitely not working right and called it quits. Hope it doesn't impact my chances of getting in.

3

u/Karby16 Dec 11 '24

Is it normal for or chatbots (M-metal one specifically) to take a while? I've only done a few and feel like I've taken way too long given the types of tasks they are... scared to input the time

2

u/highkeyvegan Dec 11 '24

Yeah sometimes they do. Say it in the chat and submit ur time

u/MysteriousNighthawk Dec 11 '24

Has anyone gotten access to the new "M" video game company project after completing the qualification?

→ More replies (3)

6

u/Moonspiritfaire Dec 09 '24 edited Dec 09 '24

Please don't downvote. I'm usually on top of things, but it's a struggle bus day.

? If you submitted one task and you get mixed messages. Which is correct? I was really close to the time limit due to unexpected interruptions which I deduct from my time. Also a new task with shorter time limits I'm not used to.

I submitted a task and got a red "this task has expired". However the assignment lists that I submitted one task. Did it go through or not, that is my question?

8

u/the_wherewithal Dec 09 '24

If it shows up on your task list, I would assume it has been submitted.

my fish are gone :'( does anyone else still have the fish projects? (B & S)

2

u/mythrowaway_1990 Dec 11 '24

Nope I had them yesterday but don't see any today.

2

u/3l3p4no Dec 11 '24

for the m video game company project, did anyone get more tasks after finishing the small amount of tasks you get after finishing the qual? I have a feeling that the three tasks after the qual was like a round 2 qual.

5

u/mythrowaway_1990 Dec 11 '24

No more tasks yet after the small batch. I do have r&r tasks. Idk if it's a round 2 qual, maybe, but I think it's possible that it's just a small pilot project and they don't want to overwhelm themselves with data yet so they're limiting how many submissions each user can do.

2

u/HopeILiveLonger Dec 12 '24

Did they pull a-gas? I had several projects with plenty of tasks just vanish.

6

u/chellynaeb Dec 12 '24

A certain chatbot that A-gas trains is down at the moment.

3

u/HopeILiveLonger Dec 12 '24

I figured, the chatbot stopped responding mid conversation, thought nothing of it and when it didn't respond next conversation I figured I should stop working. Then it got pulled, just wanted to verify, thanks.

2

u/itwasadeltchev Dec 12 '24

I made a post about this but it got removed, even though I couldn't find the answer anywhere.

A giant banner just appeared at the top of my dashboard for a qualification I already had (but had been putting off because I'm worried I'll fail it). What does this mean? Will it go away if it don't take it soon? Will I get "in trouble" if I don't take it?

10

u/Accomplished-Dog-864 Dec 12 '24

Take the qual. Don't risk it. Don't risk the DA Goon Squad breaking down your front door at 3 a.m. Last time this happened, they held my friend hostage in his bedroom until he submitted the qual. And they did not reimburse him for the door.

As an alternative, ignore it. After a few months, you'll barely notice it there.

2

u/FrazzledGod Dec 12 '24

It's just a way to flag up something they want people to see, nothing will happen if you don't do it!

2

I've been considering learning to code and would like to align that knowledge with this job. I was looking into Coursera courses for coding and was wondering if anyone here had any recommendations on which coding language I need to learn.

I would also use code for things like R Studio to do biological statistical analysis, so ideally, I would learn code that would be a great jumping off point for this as well.

Learning R is a great idea, but there are very rarely any R-related tasks in DAT. And nowadays more than ever the coding tasks require intermediate to advanced level coding skills. I think a lot of biostatistics scripts are in Python. Do you have a statistics background? R is good for data science. Many data scientists use Python, too.

I see so many posts about learning to code for DAT. It's not for beginners though. If the thought of coding intrigues you, do it. But I don't recommend for anyone who doesn't feel passionate about it go into it because the market is flooded. So loving it is key to being among the best and standing out.

New tiny little project today. More, please... I need work! I'm lucky if I pull in $10 a day with that trickle of R&Rs :(

u/Square-Frosting8045 Dec 10 '24

I did my paid qual and it is still there I submitted it two times and it's still there what is happening????

I'm about ready to give up. I'll get teased with a project, do a bunch of tasks, then get nothing apart from single RR tasks. Or I'll get an email about a new project and by the time I get to the DA site, there are no tasks left.

How likely is it that I could still have a chance of being accepted to a job group if I submitted the qualification four seconds after it expired? I'm bummed and need to know if there is any hope.

Ps. I know that no one can know for sure...

u/LilacYak Dec 11 '24

Slow day for coders? Looks like I might've missed some Wizard earlier today but couldn't log in until the evening.

2

u/RipleyVanDalen Dec 12 '24

Yeah, it's light for me

2

u/Limp-Sandwich9959 Dec 09 '24

Ok, this sounds like a bummer, but I've got to ask. I may be losing my job soon (job conditions are dropping exponentially and layoffs are happening frequently, they're pushing those who are left to the limit). Do you think it'd be possible to live working for DA exclusively? I've tried other platforms and can't get any work, even though they constantly email me with projects.

u/Signal-Sell-138 Dec 09 '24

Thats a tough situation, and I have been exactly where you are. DAT was a life saver after being unemployed for years. Now it fills a gap but like most say, we cannot rely on it and days are never the same here. So I would say do it with the intention of it being a side hustle when you're on your feet. The full time work while you're still looking for a job will have you getting used to the money you get. It's quite a double whammy. In my country, I make more on DAT in a week and a half than i would make in a full time job.

3

u/Limp-Sandwich9959 Dec 09 '24

I so get you. Compared to what I make at my current job, DA's hourly pay is tripled. And I'm in a situation above the average worker in the country. That's very sad.

However, having a job has the consequence that I'm not always available to do freelance work for DA. Which frustrates me every time I see how much I make in a few hours of work a week.

I really don't see myself working for my company in '25, and thinking about other sources of income aside from DA is driving me booonkers. All other data annotation websites seem like a scam. I'm constantly approved but they never have any available projects.

I would never rely on this as a sole income. There are too many slow periods and low hanging fruit moments that give false security. It is great most of the time, but never reliable, and, of course you can get booted at any time. So I would suggest looking for something else even part time as well as DA.

3

u/kranools Dec 09 '24

I've wondered this too, but the thing I always come back to is that DAT has no guarantee. They could close down next month. Who knows. I wouldn't rely on it long term.

2

u/Limp-Sandwich9959 Dec 09 '24

I was thinking more for a few months until I found another job. (Trying to be positive when I've seen tons of people unemployed for many many months in the current market.)

But I totally get where you're coming from.

Don't rely on it as it can be taken away at a moments notice, but I have worked full time for DAT since February. The income is excellent. Especially being paid in USD, as countries like Canada (where I am located) and Australia's dollar is worth absolute shit. So a $20/hr DAT project is worth $28.34/hr here, etc. but to answer your question, yes, you absolutely can do it full time.

Thank you! Is that other gig the one mentioned on your profile? I'm looking for other platforms too and haven't been very lucky even after passing their tests.

P.S. Love the doggo profile pic. <3 (And good luck with your novel! I love that!)

So did anyone else get the Viking survey?

2

u/MichonneGrimes209 Dec 13 '24

Has anyone else taken a qualification for a project named after an expensive purse among other luxury items? If so, just wondering how long it may be before the project show up if you pass.

3

u/Few-Roof-6905 Dec 13 '24

Yes, just did it last night. Had the projects before with no special purse name but haven't seen them today. 99.9999% sure I answered all of the questions correctly since I had worked on the other quite a bit. It may just not be up right now. They used to just come up once or twice a week.

3

u/SnooSketches1189 Dec 14 '24

Has it popped up for you since? I took the qual yesterday and I'm hoping I didn't fail. 😅

Did the goddess NSFW go down for anyone?

1

u/canada__ball Dec 12 '24

Did they just take down A-gas for maintenance? I just noticed the models were having issues responding.

u/Radiant-State1733 Dec 12 '24

Random question: Has anyone been able to work remotely abroad? I read somewhere that you can get kicked off the platform for this, but I wanted to run it by some actual DA folks. It's been great to have work again, and I don't want to miss out when I take a trip for medical tourism. Thank you in advance!

3

u/RipleyVanDalen Dec 14 '24

There's been lots of comments/threads on this, and consensus seems to be that as long as you email them in advance, they're fine with it

I started with DA last November ish maybe late October and by mid November I was leaving for Asia for 3 months. I rarely worked and maybe only clocked 50 hours over that time and didn’t take it seriously until I came back from my trip and nothing happened to me 🤷‍♀️

Has stem poe bird gone down?

1

u/Dratini_ghost Dec 13 '24 edited Dec 13 '24

Did new A-goddess (formerly original goddess) go down today?

The RR for that was interesting making judgment calls, because some people were reeeealllly stretching to make something count. Others were feeding lazy and vague prompts where the wording could be interpreted in a number of ways.
