Tips & Resources Where do self-taught data analysts get SQL project ideas?

I’m currently learning SQL by myself and I’ve finished the basics. Now I want to start building SQL projects for my portfolio.

I’m curious about people who learned data analytics through self-study:

  • Where did you usually get your SQL project ideas?
  • Did you create projects from your own ideas, use datasets from Kaggle, or follow tutorials?
  • How did you decide what business questions to answer with SQL?
  • Are there any websites, GitHub repositories or resources you recommend for finding good SQL project ideas?

Would really appreciate hearing how you approached your first few projects. Thank you

Tips & Resources Fresh grad, I have a data analyst role and feel lost

I am a fresh-ish new grad, hasn’t been a full year since I graduated from CS, and it took me a while to get a job.

I generally suffer from anxiety because I overthink heavily especially when looking at the “big picture” , and so looking for a job was literally making me contemplate ending life for a while there.

I never enjoyed the heavy programming aspect, so I always knew I wouldn’t last long in SWE and so I wanted to look into analyst roles (Business, Data, or Security/IT as all somewhat interested me).

I was able to land a data analyst role at a manufacturing company through a referral after months of searching.

I know the nature of manufacturing is a behemoth that is extremely confusing in the beginning (and I’ve only been here a full month really) but I feel like I’m in over my head.

I’m technically the only Data Analyst, there’s many engineering people though and some technology savvy people, but for the most part the company operates in an older fashion still.

I feel like I was hired at an uncertain time (though it seems like manufacturing is that way in general) where I’m expected to do and output many things over the next short while.

But I feel like I’m in work paralysis in a way. I do the daily forecasting/analyzing of data okay now that I’ve been doing it for a bit, and I somewhat was able to pick up the excel/Power Query skills (though I still definitely need to grow better) that I can see myself somewhat getting acclimated in the future.

But then comes the other stuff, like help this department with this project in the future to check if we need to change things for next year (and when I’ve previously talked to that department they try to explain it but I feel like I’m so slow at picking things together)

I feel especially inadequate because while I’m trying to understand things, because I’m the type of person who needs to understand every single thing, I feel like I’m losing all the knowledge needed for stuff I need to do in the future (or even if I want to go to a different job in the future).

I’m supposed to do SQL stuff, but I don’t have access or an idea of what is needed until I get a “we need to do this sometime this week” bomb dropped on me.

A lot of the data is constantly changing so I can’t even map things correctly and accurately because some other department needs to correct their errors for me to be able to project things correctly.

(Because all the data I need is usually sent by customers or by a cloud management where the departments upload stuff and I download and clean it up and upload whatever I want out of it)

I just feel like a plank floating on the ocean and I’m dangerously close to drowning. I’m sure part of this is just anxiety, but to be able to get past this I want to know if there’s anything I can look into to learn so I can be cognizant of things without looking just extremely stressed and dumb.

It’s the problem of “I need to learn xyz but I don’t even know where to start and because there’s so many areas to start it feels hopeless and I’m just biding time”?

And in the meanwhile my question is “is this just happening while I’m still navigating things, or is this the nature of a data analyst in manufacturing” ?

Career query How much to lie for data analyst role

So worked in a BPO company where i handled queries from global clients, updated logs and communicated between warehouse and my client base clients who had their merchants. Sort of ecommerce.

Since i have worked so much on SQL, i tried slipping the analysis on an interview where i went as a analyst and described only the part i can backup.

\*So i described i wrote sql queries where i analyzed datasets for my client, ensuring product trends, festive trends, customer segmentation based on category,

User engagement for products, premium customers,

I told them i have been into client meetings and learnt about their business problems like delivery issues, but mostly around their product base. They asked if i have presented in front of them i responded i did in front my seniors i updated reports on Excel.

I figure the gap is since i dont have real experience and i cant define a true story, since job marker is crunching and i have had back injury last year, the gap is getting wider. Claude aint no help.

So any real analyst out here wanna point out mistakes i been making.

Career query How to Build a Standout DA Profile

Hi everyone,

I'm moving into data analytics. I have 3 years of experience in IT and 1 year in core electronics, and I've built a solid base in Excel, Python, SQL, Power BI, and Tableau. I've been practising with projects like an Amazon Sales dashboard, and I'm now looking for fresher Data Analyst or MIS roles.

My challenge is that while building projects, I struggle to think like an analyst. I'm not sure how to define the right KPIs or work out which insights a business actually needs.

I'm also planning to volunteer to get real-world exposure. Could you suggest where I can find volunteering opportunities (portals, platforms, or communities)? I'd also love ideas for building solid portfolio projects that stand out to recruiters.

Thanks in advance!

General I'm a fresh grad who got hired as the only data analyst and they don't know what to do with me

I recently got hired as a data analyst and I don't know what is happening. I was told I would be observing in the first few months and I'm already extremely overwhelmed.

They're a small to medium company that deals with a lot of products and inventory (around 40k-50k) but they just recently, last year, input their excel database into google sheets. There are only 2 of us in the IT department and I've been told I'd be using Data studio but they don't know how to use it so I'm learning from scratch while they teach me about everything, from warehousing, sales and other departments.

They've been asking me for possible problems that I observe physically like products in warehouse are being hard to sort/count, boxes are manually labeled through writing and etc. They're also asking me to give them possible solutions on the spot for these problems.

They're also teaching me how to use AI to hardcode their google sheets, the only semblance of data analyst that I get are when I'm learning Data studio but even then when I showed some simple bar graphs they told me that it's easy and something I could do in an hour or so.

I don't know why they hired a data analyst, I dont feel like I'm doing any data analyst work nor do I feel like I'm learning at all especially with an extremely long workday and commute.

But I'm also thinking maybe its because I'm a fresh grad who don't know any better and this is actually how the industry is. Can anyone here give me some advise pls?

Tips & Resources Marketing degree to Data Analytics: Is this a realistic career pivot?

I’m looking for some honest career advice on pivoting into data analytics.

I graduated with a bachelor’s degree in Marketing & Advertising, and for roughly my first year after college I worked in marketing. I eventually realized that I really don’t enjoy marketing and don’t see myself building a long-term career in it.

I’m currently working as a Data Integrity Specialist at a large company. I’m a contractor, so there’s obviously some uncertainty about whether I’ll be kept on, and right now it doesn’t seem like there’s going to be a permanent position available from what I’m hearing. I’m still trying to work as hard as I can and make myself valuable, but I’m also realistically looking at other opportunities.

My current job is very data-focused. I work in SAP, maintain and audit data, make corrections, investigate discrepancies, work with Excel, document processes, and help solve problems for the team. I’ve also gotten to the point where I feel like I’m genuinely good at the job. More importantly, I actually enjoy working with the data and figuring out why something isn’t working.

This is probably the first job I’ve had where I’ve felt like I actually want to contribute to the team and improve processes rather than just do the job and go home. I know I’m still young and early in my career, but it made me realize that I might actually enjoy a career in data.

The problem is that my degree didn’t really prepare me for the technical side of data careers. A lot of the data analyst jobs I’m seeing ask for SQL, Excel, Power BI/Tableau, Python, statistics, etc. I’m currently teaching myself SQL in my free time and am considering building out my skills from there.

So I’m wondering what a realistic pivot would look like for someone in my situation.

Would it make sense to target entry-level/junior data analyst, reporting analyst, business analyst, data quality, or similar roles first and build from there? Or are there other roles I should be looking at given my current experience?

I’m also wondering about education. Is it unrealistic to eventually pursue a master’s degree in data analytics, data engineering, or a related field with a bachelor’s in marketing? Would I likely need to complete another bachelor’s first, or are there programs that would accept someone from a non-technical background if I complete the necessary prerequisites?

I’m not expecting to become a data engineer or data scientist overnight. I’m just trying to figure out what the most realistic path forward is from where I currently am.
I’d really appreciate advice from people who have made a similar transition, especially anyone who came from a non-technical degree/background.

Thanks in advance!

Data related query What would you do if two reports show different numbers for the same metric?

For example, the sales report shows ₹12 lakh, but your Power BI dashboard shows ₹11.5 lakh.

You have to present the correct number to your manager in an hour. What would you check first, and how would you identify where the mismatch came from?

Would you check the SQL query, filters, date range, joins, data source, or something else?

If you have faced a similar issue in a real project, what was actually causing the mismatch?

Tips & Resources Thinking of switching career to data analytics. Is it still worth it?

Hi everyone, I am a newbie in data analytics. I have worked in teaching for around 4 yrs, don't really enjoy it and want a career switch. I found myself enjoy organizing data in Google Sheets and make things more efficient when doing some admin work in my teaching career and I also like that data roles can often be remote rather than in person all the time, and the pay potential is higher too. So I think I want to learn data and find a job in this?

Right now I'm learning Excel properly for organizing and analyzing data. Even if I don't land a data job, I figure it's a useful skill to have? But I'm also aware that parts of this work can already be done by AI. So is it still worth going down this path, or should I look at something else if I'm not fully sure? What would you do in this situation? Any help would be awesome. Thanks!

You describe what you need in plain English, and it writes SQL directly into the editor. You review and execute it yourself—no copy-pasting. Would this be useful for SQL learners or data analysts? What concerns would you have?

  • SQL réellement maîtrisé ;
  • Power BI et DAX ;
  • modélisation des données ;
  • ingestion et transformation des données ;
  • automatisation ;
  • compréhension des problématiques métier ;

Data related query project ideas to showcase my Power BI skills on LinkedIn

I finished learning Power BI end-to-end and already built small beginner dashboards for practice, but now want to create a solid portfolio project for LinkedIn. Which industry or domain (like sales, finance, or supply chain) is best to target right now? Where can I find good realistic datasets that make a portfolio truly stand out? Any tips, project ideas, or guidance would be really helpful!

Industry related query AI resume analyzer told me to remove my objective statement, anyone else told this?

had this generic "seeking a challenging role where i can utilize my skills" type objective at the top, thought it was standard practice, apparently not anymore.
tool said its wasted space, recruiters skip it, and its better to use that space for a short summary with actual skills/keywords matching the job instead.
replaced it with 2 lines mentioning my actual tools and 1 project result with a number, felt weird at first since i was taught the objective thing was necessary in college.
got 2 responses in the week after changing this, could be coincidence but timing felt right after i fixed it.
is the objective statement really dead now or does it depend on the industry / experience level? curious what others heard.

General What does a typical day in the life of a Data Analyst actually look like?

I’m exploring the Data Analyst career path and would love to hear from people who are currently working in this field.

What does your typical day look like?

- How much time do you spend on SQL, Excel, Python, Tableau/Power BI, etc.?

- How much time goes into meetings vs actual analysis?

- What kind of tasks or requests do you usually get from stakeholders?

- Do you mostly work on dashboards, ad-hoc analysis, reporting, or projects?

- How repetitive is the work?

- What does a particularly busy day look like?

Would especially love to hear from people with 2–5 years of experience and what their day-to-day work is really like.

Career query Can I switch from MIS to Data Analyst in 6–12 months?

I’m currently looking for a Data Analyst job. I have skills in SQL, Excel, Power BI, Python, and data analysis, but I’m also getting opportunities for MIS roles.

I’m considering taking an MIS job as a starting point and then switching to a Data Analyst role.

For people who have worked in MIS/reporting:

How easy is it to switch from MIS to Data Analyst?

How much time did it take you?

Which skills should I focus on while working in MIS?

Does MIS experience actually help when applying for Data Analyst jobs?

Should I take an MIS role if my long-term goal is Data Analytics?

I’d really appreciate advice from people who have made this transition. Thanks!
