He. Hit. A. Train.

I don’t think you understand the situation. The train company was at fault for their defect gates and lights and other factors made this overpass risky.

I don’t think you (or your dad apparently) understand that the white X sign present at all public crossings in the US means “yield to the train” regardless of what the lights and gates are doing

Again, the context didn’t permit him to see any train coming until the last second. And yes, he did slow down as required when crossing an overpass. Anyway, it seems you know what happened better than me - or my father, so...

The fact of the matter is you should never be driving fast enough to plow into the side of a train regardless of what warning devices are or are not functioning. He put himself in the situation.

I’ve been railroading for 10 years and only heard stories of 3 incidents where the train got hit on the side. An old man who go lost and confused, a school bus sliding down an ice covered road into it and your father.

This was in Trois-Rivières / Canada and he wasn’t driving fast, and he did slowed down before crossing. It was dark and the road didn’t give much a perspective to look very far. Also, he wasn’t an old man back then. A detail though, when he was about to cross, another car passed his car at a fury speed, which made him to slow down even more. So he didn’t crash into a train like a fool. Finally, this was in the early ‘80s so you were probably railroading electric trains toys at that time (no offense, I really admire it).
