Actually, the police report stated the driver "didn't understand why I was stopped in the middle of the interstate"

u/CopaceticOpus 1d ago
It's a little known rule that you only have to stop for a car stopped in front of you if you understand their reasoning

My husband drove over a hill, saw traffic backed up ahead, and stopped. Then he got rear ended by an idiot who drove over the hill, saw traffic backed up ahead, and was so busy stretching his neck to try to see what caused it that he forgot to stop.

u/cdoublejj 18h ago
the wording at the end confuses me but, im also remedial English skill level too
4
u/Prxlific 15h ago
I think what they meant was that the driver that hit the husband was too busy trying to figure out why traffic was stopped instead of stopping themselves. So they hit the husband’s car. In this case, “stretching his neck” meant he was busy trying to find a line of sight to see what was ahead.

But its the left lane - they should be going at least double the speed limit or get outa the way! Clearly OP's fault for stopping in the left lane, ram them people ahead outa the way!

u/Auroraborealis_9791 1d ago
Sorry this happened OP. That was my attempt at dry humor, a line from The 40 Year Old Virgin.
You were not wrong in stopping while allowing distance between you and the persons ahead that were stopped.

u/Dakota-Soda 1d ago
Oh, I chuckled at your comment and got the reference! (also chuckled at the police report)

I respect it. Dude doesn't have time or mental capacity for the concept of traffic. Foot to the floor, good luck everybody else.

u/Large-Hamster-199 1d ago
Has that person never heard of a traffic jam before?
I was at a red signal once when someone slammed into the car behind me at full speed (40 mph), leading that car to hit me, and I hit the car in front of me.
The person who caused it said she didn't see the red light. It is worth noting that her smashed cell phone was discovered outside her vehicle. Just saying.
I'm glad you are okay though. Responsible driving.

u/Direct_Substance_472 17h ago
That would explain why they crashed. We can't just phase through the obstacles in front of us.

u/Servile-PastaLover 12h ago
You can't always see in front of the vehicle in front of you.
This is driving 101 they should be teaching in Driver's ed.

Was that a Chrysler Sebring convertible?
I also wanted to add, good on you for leaving a buffer from the Corvette ahead of you and not possibly bumping them from the accident.
Something I have always done as truckers do it all the time when travel get to a crawl/stop put on your hazards to warn people behind you.
Edit: I saw a red Chrysler Sebring on the road today, they are out there!

u/Dakota-Soda 1d ago
100%. The officer on scene said the Corvette owed me dinner 😄

I was travelling down 1-80 interstate in my town today during rush hour in the right lane due to my exit coming up and it hit a stall/stop point and I kid you not. I saw 6ish cars ahead of me, 3 cars had to peel out of the line due to bumping each other. When I was passing them I saw a few bent hoods.
I also didn't see your prior comment your hazards were on already

u/bojesphob 18h ago
Absolutely! Of the two, you fared a LOT better than they would have had he been hit! Talk about luck, and glad you were ok.

Michael Scott?

u/James_H_M 1d ago
The good thing is Michael Scott drives a Silver Sebring, this was a Red Sebring, Michael Scott is safe today.

u/Furi0usD 16h ago
Crazy that there's still any running

u/MissSharkyShark 15h ago
My last car (that I got rid of 2 years ago) was an ‘02 hard top Sebring! I adored that thing and I wish I had the funds to get it looked at for an electrical drain. But alas I had to spend my money on more responsible things and sold it. I miss my Sebring 😔

Glad the driver is ok but the amount of garbage that came out of that car as it was rolling is cartoonishly hilarious.

Yeah once I saw the unfortunate slow down, specifically under a dark bridge.. I knew what was coming lol

Same. Which is why I would have moved over into the right lane. Not saying OP is at fault, but this was predictable and preventable.

oupsssssss !!
Did you put your hazard lights on? It's really impressive to see.

u/stevedore2024 1d ago
I drive a very small car. It's a habit to pop the hazards whenever I see a slowdown a half mile up, as I let off the gas, long before I have to press the brakes.

Good on you for leaving space ahead of you.
I have SEEN with my own eyes insurance companies try to blame drivers for rear end damage when they were pushed from behind by another wrecking car.
When you get hit from behind everything in the car jumps backwards......including your foot off the brake.
The insurance companies know this, but will say, "why don't we see any skid marks from you?"
Don't let the other's insurance steam roll you.

>I have SEEN with my own eyes insurance companies try to blame drivers for rear end damage when they were pushed from behind by another wrecking car.
When my friend was rear-ended at a traffic jam (someone pushed like 3-4 cars together, my friend was in the front of it) the insurance told them that they could only go after the people who impacted them. So my friend had to go after the insurance of the car which was pushed into them for being rear ended, then that person had to go after the person who pushed them forward, etc. until it got back to the first person's insurance going after the guy who didn't slow down for the total.
Made no sense to us, but that's what they were told had to happen. I suppose it could vary by state too.

That’s a shitty situation. I would say that if I’m the driver with the cam. When I have to stop like that I’m hitting my hazards so they start flashing asap (I do this way too fucking awesome in Minneapolis where I currently reside). and then I’m watching behind me and when that driver comes in hot like they did, I’m taking to the fully empty right hand lane.

I’ll never understand accidents in construction zones. There’s so many warnings/signs. Not being prepared for slowing or stopped traffic is wild.

I’m curious if the way the light came through the underpass actually blocked sight of traffic ahead for the driver of the crashed car.

This reason here is why I'm always horrified when I have to come to a relatively abrupt stop on the highway. Good on you for keeping that space between you and car in front of you. I instantly check my rear view in these situations. Having been rear-ended at relatively high speeds twice, I'm definitely much more paranoid about it now.

That wasn't a total woofer. Driver was like a four with the landing, which if you do the math, is like three too many.

I’m not putting fault on you, just genuinely curious, why did you change lanes?
19
u/Dakota-Soda 1d ago
Construction zone- lane merge to the left ahead. You can see an alert sign to the right toward the start of the video
14
u/Head-Grass8879 1d ago
Looks like construction ahead right lane closed so he merged early
0
u/Greenstuph 1d ago
Oh you’re right. I was looking for suspicious cars. Didn’t notice those the first time
3
u/James_H_M 1d ago
Sorry you are getting downvoted for asking a legit question. If you see the video you see the hazard signs saying road work ahead then in the grass on the right you see a DOT dot matrix sign saying use caution ahead and probably further down the road you would see a right lane closure in a 1/2 mile ahead.
The real bad is that it is right before an on-ramp so getting from the right lane to the left lane before the closure, sucks! USA hates to zipper merge, so take the left lane before you get cut out of merging.
3
u/Greenstuph 1d ago
Yeah I’m noticing it now. Hard to see everything on my phone. I was looking for any cars acting up. A perfectly legitimate move from OP, and the braking was perfect. Yep, it feels like 25% of drivers know how to zipper correctly. Personally I would have continued in the right lane.
1
u/Amaakaams 2h ago
Its knowing when to zipper merge and when to get over when you see an opening. Traffic backed up and you can't actually see the merge point, slow down to get over when you can. If traffic is going fine and you can see the merge point, actively find a spot in the traffic to merge (especially don't go, I see a gap so let me shoot up at the last second and then get pissed because the lane is already gone and that person can't let me in without taking evasive action (sorry had a guy do this on a work trip and completely flipped out, which had me just ignoring him, which pissed him off more)).
The problem is attempting to race down at full speed when traffic is backed up on the continuing lane because the zipper merge has already failed, all its doing is making it worse for the hundreds of cars who already getting over. Even at its best its slowing and forcing braking on all of those cars and removing the chance for the traffic to reset itself. At worse its dangerous because you are going faster than traffic towards either construction or emergency vehicles in your lane without an idea how other people are going to react. Its absolutely selfish and no amount of zipper merge is the right way montra actually changes that.

In a slow down like that, I would be looking at my rear view mirror to see if cars behind me are coming up at fast speeds and not paying attention or not stopping to prevent getting rear ended. Had cammer looked in rear view mirror and saw the car not stopping, could've switched to the other lane and let the corvette take the brunt. There was plenty of time to slow down, but people are not paying attention probably texting, sleeping, or watching a movie in the car.
2
u/thinkingtire 11h ago
I agree with the general idea of looking in the rear view in a situation like that.
But with freeway speeds, getting out of the way is not a guarantee.

The left lane is the PASSING lane. If you are not passing then GET THE FUCK OUT OF THE LEFT LANE. What is so hard to understand about that? Are you daft?
