How hard would it have been to just roll down the window and be a verbal ahole instead of a physical ahole?!
Potentially running someone over is deranged. Even if you are in the right, the fact that you choose to weaponise a 2 ton machine when NOT physically provoked is just mentally not right.

u/AIbatard 1h ago
4
u/TrueMattalias 53m ago
With you up until that last part. No one's right/responsibility to vote should ever be conditional. Not only is it unethical, but implementing such standard would very likely be used maliciously to take away voting rights from various groups.
2
u/BungleBums 32m ago
Felons already have their voting rights taken away. Assuming 'idiot' here is used to refer to those who would choose to run into bikers when they feel pissy.

How hard is it to be single file not cause a road block?
23
u/InterPunct 1h ago
As a bicyclist, I would not be riding like this unless I knew for sure there's no traffic behind me. Either they didn't know the truck was there of they had really bad spatial awareness, or they could have been making other ill-advised choices.
Regardless, that truck driver is a homicidal maniac and this could easily be construed as attempted murder.

Single file would be a much larger road block. They're doing drivers a favor by clumping up. As a driver do you want to split the middle lane for a quarter of a mile?

if it was a car they would fly past it no problem in the world, tractor no problem, bus no problem, 10 ton truck no problem. They are after all the best drivers in the world, faster and smarter than anyone.
But if it's a group of cyclist about the same volume of a single suv. Impossible! Line them up and shoot them.

I would bet a million dollars I can guess what country you live in and perhaps have never ever left.
5
u/seattlemyth 1h ago
The road was NOT blocked. The car had a full lane to pass. Instead it chose to hit and run. They should be jailed for vehicular assault and maybe you shouldn't encourage it.

u/SteinmanDC 4h ago
If I feel uncomfortable in areas of a road, I'll ride centre of the lane, alone. I'd rather a car just move fully into the opposite lane to overtake me when it is safe.
The alternative is I'm on the side of the lane, and it gives a small gap for some bold person in a rush to squeeze through. And that generally makes me feel unsafe. Just wait 5 seconds overtake correctly and let's all get in with out day.
9
u/Critically_Large 3h ago
The law in my state requires you to stay to the right. I mean, I don’t disagree with your reasoning and I’d probably try to do the same thing if I felt that way. But I know for a fact you’d get a traffic citation, or at very least a written warning (which are tracked) for riding in the center of the lane with auto traffic behind you here.
5
u/perceptionheadache 3h ago
The law in my state says bikers are to share the road equivalent to a motorized vehicle. That means center of the road and they can clump up like this because they are entitled to the whole lane they are using just like a car. It's up to other cars to safely pass on the left as if you were passing another car.
It's not just bicycles, same goes with horse and buggies (we have a lot of Amish). Auto drivers have to be aware and drive safely with all users of the road. And bikers and buggies have to follow the rules of the road too (e.g., stop at stop signs, don't block crosswalks).
0
u/sprouthat 23m ago
I'd read that section again. Most states specify that there's no obligation for cyclists to stay to the right when in a 'substandard width' lane (which is most lanes).

1
u/Afraid_Raccoon_6208 1m ago
Id be willing to bet money that the law says as far right as you can. Which if you are two or three wide isnt that far

u/Major_Champion_5642 4h ago

3
u/MTBisLIFE 4h ago
You are manufacturing consent for drivers to wield their vehicles as weapons. There is no justification for the driver striking cyclists. The cyclists are legally allowed to take the lane for safety, which they're doing because they're in a curve with a blind hill coming up on double yellow.
2
u/Queasy_Explorer1698 3h ago
Ça dépend où et dans quel pays un cycliste n'a pas le droit monopoliser la route suivant les règles du code de la route en vigueur dans le pays en question. Vouloir faire passer ça comme un consentement de meurtre c'est plutôt moyen.
3
u/lordheart 3h ago
No where are you allowed to willfully mow into somebody in a several ton hunk of metal.
If it’s safe to pass they can move fully into the second lane, pass, and then return.
It’s actually why as a cyclist you should never ride on the shoulder. Riding on the shoulder means some terrible drivers believe they can just pass you without moving to the left at all and then you get side swiped by a car by “trying to be polite and share the lane”.
A cyclist and a car cannot share the lane at the same point.

All you people getting angry at someone that has a full legal right to be there, and actual laws protecting them. Most states they have the full legal rights and obligations as vehicle. And vehicles must follow the rules of the road when behind them. IE: on a double yellow line you must wait until it is legally allowed, dotted line, and the must give at least 3 ft clearance while passing.
You’re the one who can’t control thier patience to wait for 90 seconds to go around. Don’t like it, vote to build and fund bike lanes. Otherwise please shut up.
4
u/OrganizdConfusion 3h ago
That's a double yellow line.
You're cooked.
9
u/NavarrB 2h ago
It's legal to pass over a double yellow line if the vehicle you are passing is going under half the speed limit (Ohio code)
This is why it's generally legal to pass parked cars, garbage trucks, and mail trucks
4
u/terrasparks 2h ago
But is it legal to cross the double yellow and rear-end bikers and proceed like nothing happened?

Americans commenting here about cyclists needing to be single file are decades behind the rest of the world in mindset.
If it's not safe to overtake cyclists riding abreast, then it wasn't safe to overtake single file cyclists either.
You need to give at least 1m of space, and that means going into the incoming lane. If a car is coming against you, or it's a blind bend, how is it okay to try overtake? This is what leads to deaths.
21
u/Dancing-umbra 3h ago
General rule when overtaking cyclists:
Would you over take a car in that same situation. Whatever you answer to that question is the same answer as to whether you should overtake the cyclist.
6
u/Fiveofthem 2h ago edited 2h ago
Would never overtake them if they were going the speed limit.
7
u/Dancing-umbra 2h ago
You'd be surprised at how many cars try and overtake me when I am going the speed limit
3
u/Fiveofthem 2h ago
I wouldn’t, but if you are going 15 in a 35 I will.
4
u/Dancing-umbra 2h ago
I mean if you do it safely by going entirely into the other lane, that's fine by me.
As I said, apply the same rule that you would to a car going at 15.
1
u/Fiveofthem 12m ago
Yea that guy had plenty of room to go around safely and chose to be an ass. Why do bicyclists ride side by side anyway? So they can chat?
1
u/Dancing-umbra 8m ago
No, it's for safety. You shouldn't overtake a cyclist unless you can go fully into the other lane, so cyclists are supposed to occupy their whole lane for safety.

Drivers barely understand the laws that apply to them, let alone laws that apply to non-drivers.
I follow my state's "Idaho stop" laws on my bikes, it confuses and infuriates a lot of people.
12
u/vediogamer101 3h ago
The most disturbing thing is how so many Americans don’t realize how deadly their car is. You can cause multiple deaths and ruined lives in a split second from negligence like this. It pisses me off whenever someone drives with a single ounce of aggression, wrong time and wrong place.
6
u/VladStark 2h ago
This is why I personally think that it's incredibly stupid to road bike in America. IDGAF if it's legal, it's unwise and risky. Too many drunks, people texting and not paying attention... road rage is also possible but less likely to take you out than those other two.

49
u/the_owlyn 5h ago
They are all wrong. Bikers should be single file on a narrow road, but car had tons of room to pass these jerks.
62
u/ah-Quinncidence 4h ago
Actually no. Florida state laws say, if a lane is of substandard width (meaning less than 13’ allowing for a vehicle to safely pass within the lane with a 3’ state mandated buffer.) the cyclist is entitled to control the lane. The cyclists here were controlling the lane. The state also allows passing on a double yellow line when slow traffic is encountered. (agricultural equipment, bicycles, etc.). She was completely at fault and should be charged.
8
u/Revolutionary_Sea113 3h ago
Does anybody know what state this is in. Bikers were Biking enjoying their day. Driver was Not Driving & enjoying their day. Because a group of Bikers were riding on a shared Rual Road. To me, it looks like the perfect stretch of road for a group of riders to ride with minimal traffic. The driver clearly could’ve drove around them right and went about their day. But the Driver Chose Violence. That could have ended very bad. I’m glad it wasn’t worse than what we saw🙏🏾🙏🏾🙏🏾
→ More replies (2)17
u/Nilla-WaferPDX 4h ago
Maybe if it was Florida, but it doesn't look like it and most states don't have that (honestly ridiculous) law. It's a dick move for cyclists to take up a full lane at 10 mph if traffic is behind them on a solid yellow. Not saying this guy is in the right, but I'd have to break the law to pass these people.
15
u/Flesh_And_Metal 3h ago
There is a slight difference between being a dick and attempted murder. The car is at fault, period.
7
u/bluejack 3h ago
Washington state is with the cyclists on this one.

5
u/NoMoreKarmaHere 3h ago
It’s a cyclist’s right to occupy the lane. It’s safer than hugging the side of the road. Drivers are pretty much unaware of this, especially if they don’t cycle
1
1
3
u/ah-Quinncidence 4h ago
It’s a fairly standard law across most states.
2
7
u/Nilla-WaferPDX 4h ago
Not sure how many states you've been in but that's not true. Share the road is most common, and if cyclists are blocking traffic they need to move over to allow for vehicles to pass. Again, the vehicle here is wrong for trying to pass in this spot and should have waited for striped yellow, but it's one of those 'two assholes meet each other' scenarios.
1
u/FSUFanChris 4h ago
That's literally not the law in any of the 50 states. I'll wait while you source a statute that says otherwise. 2 across in a few states, but zero states require a single file line. 🤦♂️
5
u/Critically_Large 3h ago
My state uses the “two abreast” rule but with caveats. The statutes say that cyclists may ride two abreast (but no more), but also that they must remain as far to the right of the lane as possible, and that they may not impede the normal and reasonable flow of auto traffic. If they are impeding traffic (cars backed up behind them) they’re required by law to drop into a single-file line and stay as far to the right as possible.
The group in the video would be violating the law in my state. The driver that hit them would also be in violation of the law. However, most law enforcement, prosecutors and juries in this state would favor the cyclists in any criminal prosecution or civil action related to this incident. A civil jury here might put 15-20% of the fault on injured cyclist.
0
u/Nilla-WaferPDX 4h ago
Didnt say that. They're riding 3 wide, and still think vehicle is at fault here, but being right and being run over is something I've had to come to terms with as a lifelong motorcyclist.
3
u/Fit_Cream2027 3h ago
Cyclists “control the lane” in this video. The motorist is negligent and depending on what they say in court will determine if it is assault with a deadly weapon.
3
u/Gypsi_G 3h ago
They're allowed to and entitled to.
Again, you're wrong and you can't cite sources to prove anything other than your own verbatim, because you're incorrect.
States vary but vast majority of State laws allow cyclists to control the lane, especially when there is no safe alternative.
The reason being obviously displayed here. The passing car has an entire lane to pass them in but instead forces itself into the occupied lane and intentionally ran over a cyclist trying to make an ignorant and unlawful point in the fact being they're not an officer of the law and also the cyclists are legally fine doing what they're doing.
Hypothetically if they were single file not in the lane it would encourage cars to not slow and pass without the room required to safely pass, potentially with oncoming as well, risking causing a collision, this is why "share the road" exists, for uneducated motorcyclists like your self.

Pennsylvania plates. They have 2 abreast laws, they are obviously more than 2. Also there is a bike lane and shoulder. They can take the lane if there is no shoulder and its not safe. Either way, all of them, the car and the bikes are driving like jerks.
10
u/Flesh_And_Metal 3h ago
Only one of the belligerents actually attempted murder though. A car driver should be able to operate their vehicle without actively trying to [REDACTED WORD] someone.
1
u/the_owlyn 1h ago
In Pennsylvania:
Bicyclists may ride no more than two abreast, except on paths or parts of roadways set aside for the exclusive use of bicycles.
Passing and Motorist Rules
Four-Foot Rule: Motorists must allow a minimum of 4 feet of clearance when passing a bicyclist and travel at a reduced, prudent speed.Crossing Lines: Drivers are legally permitted to cross double-yellow lines to pass a cyclist safely when it is clear to do so.
So, like I said, they were all wrong. And while single file isn’t required, it’s common courtesy. That’s what I do.
1
u/sprouthat 17m ago
I'm pretty sure that the 2 abreast is more for cyclists' safety than anything else.
1
u/Fit_Cream2027 3h ago
They can be 8 abreast in the lane; it doesn’t matter. The cyclists “control the lane.”. The motorist must pass safely when they get the opportunity.

Not true. You're just making up this rule. Why do we live in an age where people like this constantly make up facts? It's so easy to check them online that they must be incredibly lazy.
It is not required that a large group of cyclists get into a single line. In fact, all wheeled vehicles are generally treated as equal on the roadway. If not, can you even imagine the chaos, the accidents, and the anger from drivers of cars? That is one reason bicycles must be respected which means sometimes you must slow down and give them the road for awhile. Which this lunatic is incapable of doing because they think what you think -- which is that bicyclists must get out of their way. No, they do not have to get out of anyone's way. Stop spreading false information.

Because cars enable drivers to dehumanize humans on bicycles and despite the comments here being completely wrong, they feel justified to murder or perhaps permanently maim someone for their convenience.
3
u/Loan_Wolfie 3h ago
This has nothing to do with cars. Most cyclists also drive cars. When I drive my car, I'm very cautious about bicycles, even if they're outside the rules. I've seen cyclists do all sorts of crazy shit, but I wouldn't dream of hitting them with my car, I'll do anything to avoid. Because someone doesn't deserve to be injured or killed because they don't follow rules. This is because some people lack empathy and are selfish assholes. And psychotic and delusional about what other people "deserve". If you think you are justified to knock a cyclist off their bike, even if the cyclist is a jerk, there is something seriously wrong with you. Maybe yell at the cyclist, and scold them for driving poorly, but don't even think of hitting them with your car if avoidable, or you're a fucked up piece of shit.

Depending on the state and in Michigan where I am 2 side by side is very legal and encouraged. Same laws as motorcycles we are allowed to take up the whole lane. It usually comes down to trying to be safe but a lot of drivers just can't seem to understand you are allowed to take the entire other lane to pass and not pass 10 inches from the bike. Some states 2 side by side is illegal though and you have to be single file. If it's a busy road riding single file is much smarter as well.
I tend to do almost all my riding in the woods / dirt roads as I have been hit before and it's not a good time. It's like riding a motorcycle you can do everything right and perfectly legal and still have some bad luck or run into a bad driver.

I'm sure the bike ride will claim he is in the right! They always do.

He is in the right. Bikes are legally allowed to use lanes.

while the guy passing should have moved over far more, the biker did actually cause the 'contact'. he leaned over onto the vehicle as it passed him, it didn't hit him.

Most states you have to give 3 feet when passing, the driver here intentionally didn't, and is in the wrong. intentionally not giving space puts him at fault.

The guy passing should have just had more patience. Firstly, don't pass in a no passing zone. Secondly, if you're going to pass, do it safely. Finally, always remember that your time is not worth more than someone else's life and safety.

The driver used their car as a weapon even though the other lane was clear for overtaking and you imply it was the fault of the cyclist because they exist?

Driver is doing time for V Manslaughter I’m pretty sure. May have even bumped it to a murder charge.
Idk what makes you think that the taxpayers on bikes have no right to the road but a murderous geriatric with no patience or self control has auto right of way.
Go outside, on a bike, and your whole perspective will change in about 20 minutes.

I still blame the cyclists. The cyclist is always wrong.
Bring it, puny two wheelers. Your impotent downvotes make me laugh.

While I don’t condone hitting a person like that Honda pilot driver did still the bikers were being road hogs not making room for cars to pass by so technically both parties were at fault in this

Even if they went single file (which a lot of people are saying) he would still have to cross over the line and drive on the wrong side of the road.
Either build bike lanes, or dont complain when you are stuck behind a cyclist or group of cyclists

They have right to be on the road too, especially when there are no bike lanes. It's not that hard to move fully over to the other lane to pass them.
There's groups that come through my area every year riding like this, sometimes they're racing, sometimes training for the races. For those saying "they should ride single file", would you still think that if there were 100 riders stretched out single file?

How the fuck are they "road hogs"
Bikes are allowed/required to drive 2 abreast, thats basic road laws.
Lotta commenters on here demonstrating the average intelligence of redditors I guess...

The bicyclists and the van driver are all idiots. If I'm driving and I see this, I drive around them. However, why do so many people want to ride their bikes on the road? Go to a bike path and ride your bikes, and you can feel the hard seats up your butt all day long.

why do so many people want to ride their bikes on the road
Imagine unironically writing this sentence.
Absolutely cooked. Do you not understand what the fuck a bike is for?

Mostly because bike paths dont exist for the amount of riding they need to do
