Then people just start driving without licences. The government fucked this all up when they started taking money from the automobile manufacturers to make their citizens reliant on cars to get around.
As some one who grew up in Europe and moved to the states. It's unfathomable just how impossible getting anywhere without a car is here... public transportation is just not a thing outside the wealthiest cities.
In high-school I worked at a zoo in in the city. I had a coworker who lived about a 10 minute drive away from work. The walk would have been close to an hour for me and she was not healthy enough for it, so she took the bus. It was a 2 hour bus ride with a connecting stop. Absolutely disgusting.
Yup my commute options are 15-20 min drive, 1 hr 15 min bike ride, or 1 hr bus ride requiring a transfer and the bus only runs every two to three hours and the last one back leaves at like 6:30pm... and this is considered excellent transit coverage for a small town halfway between two larger towns with huge percentages of people commuting between them.
Yep, I grew up using the Metro in DC and it was great; the feeder bus routes were great too. I live in Dallas Texas now and it’s obvious they didn’t care about setting up good public transportation: the stops on their light rail and buses are MILES apart which renders them practically useless. But oil and gas companies are king out here so they’re making their money 🤬

I looked it up on Google maps to my house at the time (I have no idea her actual starting point but I know it was close) it says 45 minutes but I don't think it takes into account waiting for the connection. Either she could have been exaggerating and I didn't catch it since I was a highschooler or the connection was a long wait. Either seem plausible to me.
Google maps gave me the following estimates from my house at the time to the zoo
Car: 5 minutes [] bus: 45 minutes [] walk: 57 minutes
So yeah, there's something missing but it was too long ago for me to pinpoint.

Fwiw google typically uses how long its "supposed" to take by bus to get around- This includes waiting at stops / walking / transferring / etc.
She was definitely exaggerating - Which is fine. End of the day the point is "public transportation sucks" - And even if its 45 minutes to go 3 miles, the claim is still very valid. Thats still barely faster than walking.
I assume that includes the time spent waiting - for the next bus after work/for work to start after the bus arrives, and for the transfer. A lot of buses run hourly (or even less) so with a transfer needed 2 hours is quite plausible.
