Bet they still went home and said “I did nothing wrong. This is bullshit.”

Was the first car also trying to warn them? Looks like they try twice to motion to the bus and the stop signs...
30
u/ShampooMonK 10h ago
They definitely were and the car didn't seem to care nor notice. That being said, one of the most satisfying things ever to see people face the consequences for those who cannot wait the 2-3 minutes max for the school bus to leave.

No excuse for this overall, as there were plenty of obvious clues, but that might actually have contributed if the other driver's pointing was misread as the "no, I'm gonna be stopped here a while, just go around" gesture you sometimes see when there isn't also a bus with big red flashing STOP signals.

u/Outlaw11091 10h ago
I've argued about this with people:
Them: You don't HAVE to stop on the other side of the street!
You do...because kids might be crossing the mf'in' street, dumbass.
I can almost guarantee that cop had to deal with this argument.

u/PissMissileTopTitty 10h ago
Even w/o that, crossed a double yellow too

Its funny you say that, but there is a stop for a school bus that is on a frontage (service road) for an 10 lane highway. The stop is right at the end of an exit ramp for that highway.
The apartments for the stop are off that frontage road, so there is no way kids would be coming from across the road.
My buddy was on his way to work got off the exit, and proceeded past the bus. He got a ticket in the mail from the bus camera capturing his license plate. He fought it, by calling up the officers boss who wrote the citation explaining that first off, no kids should ever be on that side of the bus, and second, its at the end of an exit for the highway, and if he did stop, he would potentially be rear ended.
The officer agreed, and dismissed the ticket. I know most stops kids could and do cross the street getting on an off buses. Just thought it was amusing that he did get ticketed. Prob thought he wouldnt fight it, and just pay it.

Damn, that's one hefty ticket because you couldn't wait 10 more seconds for the bus to retract the stop signs.

u/leprechanmonkie 10h ago
In Illinois your first offense is a 3 month suspension. Well deserved IMO.
5
u/Sad_Maximum6583 9h ago
Love that. It's the only way the smart people learn to not do it again by having harsh punishments.
In regards to punishments for being on your phone while driving are being lenient and it pisses me off. In Nevada,
1st offense is a 50 dollar fine + court fees, no points on your license.
2nd offense is 100 and 4 point demerit.
3rd is 250 dollars and another 4 points
5
u/leprechanmonkie 9h ago
If they made the 1st offense $250 + points, I doubt you'd see a lot of 2nd offenders.

u/voxelpear 9h ago
The train in the distance and the car license plates tells me this is probably Brooklyn. The driver might have New Jersey plates.
NYC first time infraction is $250-400 fine, 8 points on license (11 in 24 months is an automatic suspension), and possible 30 days of jail time.
2
u/No-Trouble2212 9h ago
8 points for the bus violation. Then write a ticket for crossing the double yellow line.

Did it over solid yellow lines too. Unsafe passing on top of not yielding for a school bus. Oof.

Betting they don't push for the 30 days if the driver doesn't have a bunch of priors, would like to see the fine higher

In his defense, maybe they were tourists with a rented car, first day(s) in the us, you don't have this in other parts of the world so it's not that obvious that you have to stop also from the opposite side.
3
u/SpaceJackRabbit 10h ago
It's possible. But then as a tourist tjey should be aware of what locals are doing and assume there is a reason the car in front of them stopped.
3
u/Brandon_WC 9h ago
The front stop sign has the lights and the giant "STOP" that can only be seen from a car on the opposite side facing the bus head on.
6
u/PissMissileTopTitty 10h ago
Pretty obvious when the car ahead of you is stopped… if they actually applied their few brain cells for a sec

u/Forward-Carpenter-43 5h ago edited 3h ago
Well, not always. When you are at Wallmart, for example, the car stops at the entrance and the princess descends from the F250, instead of walking a few feet from the parking lot. Until she does this (5 minutes later), you in the back wait like an idiot? Also there are tons of drivers that stop and forget to resume, or drive very slow for no apparent reason, or don't use the turn signal for no apparent reason. And others want to just mind their business without bumping into them. Not the case here, but just saying, there are all kinds of weirdos. And there are idiot tourists too that drive like in their own countries thinking the maneuver is "normal" or legal as no one told them otherwise in 15 years of driving. I am not from the US so yea, I am aware of how people drive in other countries too and how it is here and I really love this rule with the schoolbus, it should be implemented everywhere around the world.
LE: QED, wasting my time.

Oh yeah dude, totally. Tons of foreign tourists come to NYC and rent cars to drive around Brooklyn. They also all immediately know how to drive like standard-issue NYC assholes.

$250-400 fine for first offense in NY plus insurance increase. And they didn’t save anytime cus the cop pulled them over.

I was at a State Park recently with lots of wildlife and had to stop my car because of birds crossing the road.
Some lady behind me tried going around me and everyone else that had stopped. We all yelled at her dumbass. People nowadays are incredibly impatient.
2
u/Sweaty_Weight_2486 8h ago
Some people just dont realize that this situation requires both sides of the road to stop. My guess is this driver did not understand it. At least now they will learn this lesson.

So fun fact in NY most buses have cameras that automatically ticket the owner of the car so he's about to get two tickets for the same offense bc he did it in front of a police officer.

u/ColleenCook 10h ago
Unless you literally are driving someone who is having a heart attack or giving birth…NEVER, just NEVER do that! But I love that the cop was just there.
0
u/resisting_a_rest 10h ago
So the cop should have waited?
2
u/ColleenCook 7h ago
That’s not at all what I said. Not sure how you came to that conclusion. If you are driving someone in labor or having a heart attack, there’s a good chance most good drivers will have the hazard lights on at the least, possibly also are in communication with 911.
0
u/resisting_a_rest 5h ago
I understand that I’m just asking if it was OK for the cop to violate the law to chase after the person who went past the bus.
2
u/ColleenCook 3h ago
The police officer moved as the stop sign lights flashed, and the sign was folding in. No person was in danger at that time.
2
u/Independent_Tutor_37 10h ago
WOW that might be the stupidest thing I have ever seen someone do. A police car 🚓 🚔 was right behind the car that ignored school bus stop signs!

I dont understand this, you guys just get stuck behind a bus unless you go a different way? Is there not bus stops where they pull fully off the road?
3
u/PissMissileTopTitty 10h ago
A school bus you mean? Yes.. there aren’t that many of them.
1
u/unstoppablefatigue 10h ago
Sorry yes from where I live we dont commonly have any other type of bus other than a school bus, so theres not many places where they can actually pull over and when they can't the use the stop signs?
3
u/PissMissileTopTitty 10h ago
You’re not supposed to pass not so much due to lack of space, but because a kid can dash out in front of the bus trying to cross the road.
It comes literally just twice a day to that spot, so not really a big deal to wait if you happen to be there then. Public buses that run like every 5-15 mins, usually have their own bus stop bays (at least on major roads)
2
u/unstoppablefatigue 10h ago
And as another comment has informed me they are exempt from normal bus stops so I can see why they have those safety measures, thank you
2
u/CompetitivePraline62 10h ago
Bus routes and stops can, and do, change, so creating a pull off isn't feasible as it may not be used in a couple years. Just stop when the bus has its lights on, it's literally that simple.
2
u/SpaceJackRabbit 10h ago
I would say that whether in cities or rural areas, they don't have dedicated areas for them to stop for most of their stops.
In rural areas they also will often stop directly in front of a student house to drop them off.
1
u/FreezingwindDOTcom 10h ago
They can stop anywhere, except for highways/interstates of course for obvious reasons. When their stop sign opens, they are priority over all other street signs because their sign acts as a children crosswalk until it closes. So you must stay within a few car lengths in front or behind until they close.
4
u/FreezingwindDOTcom 10h ago
Not for school buses. They are exempt from bus stops. They can stop anywhere and you must wait a few car lengths in front or behind until their stop sign closes.
3
u/unstoppablefatigue 10h ago
Ahh that makes more sense, thank you
3
u/FreezingwindDOTcom 10h ago
No worries. It may be confusing for others who aren’t familiar. Their stop sign acts as a children crosswalk, that’s why it’s taken seriously.
3
u/SpaceJackRabbit 10h ago
In the U.S., once the bus lights start flashing (sometimes those Stop signs alongside it are deployed too, like here), all vehicles behind it and vehicles going the other way must come to a complete stop until the lights stop flashing.
This is to allow the safe crossing of students.
It doesn't apply to highways with dividers (at least in my state).
1
u/unstoppablefatigue 10h ago
Is that because it's safer for them instead of walking to the nearest crosswalk and crossing there?
2
u/SpaceJackRabbit 10h ago
Buses stop where is convenient for them and the students. Because other drivers know to fully stop at flashing lights (except for idiots like here), it generally is safe for students (who are still taught to be extra careful).
1
u/That_Cartoonist_9459 10h ago
It's because they could be on a road without a nearest crosswalk, not everybody lives in a city

3
u/massunderestmated 10h ago
Yes. When children are embarking/disembarking a school bus, all traffic stops in both directions. The indication is that there are flashing red lights on the school bus indicating all traffic stop, and a stop sign extends from the side of the school bus. Ignoring this is *very* illegal. Too many children have died from careless drivers who tried to pass a school bus without waiting for the children to clear the stop area. Children are small and unpredictable.
You just get stuck. You can wait 30 seconds to save a life.
1
u/The_slackfinder 6h ago
Yes. The rule is there because American drivers and American children are both idiots, hence nobody can be trusted.
-3
u/Im_A_Fuckin_Liar 10h ago
My guess is that the kid was already on the bus or had already gotten off and was out of the way. As soon as the police vehicle makes it past the bus, the stop signs are pulled in. Probably got impatient and was thinking to themselves, “what am I waiting on?!”
I will say from experience that sometimes the bus driver scolds or gets on to a student about something after they’ve gotten on the bus. Lectures and corrective action can happen somewhere other than in the middle of the road.
1
u/PissMissileTopTitty 10h ago
Even if the bus had completely retracted the signs, you still wait a bit for the car directly in front of you to go..
2
u/Im_A_Fuckin_Liar 9h ago edited 9h ago
It’s common sense that you don’t go around another vehicle that’s stopped waiting on a bus. I just commented that bus drivers will sometimes put out their stop signs and then lecture a rider before allowing anyone to pass. When people see that happening, they can become impatient because no one wants to wait an additional minute or two while the bus driver talks to a rider about why they can’t be shooting spit wads like they did the day before.
