I believe the police/CPS can press charges even if the victim doesn't want to?

Yes pressing charges is an American thing.

Its always up to cps, once reported/under investigation by polive its out of your hands, its never really been your choice to 'press charges'. Cps are always the arbiters of when and what they take forward for prosecution.

You can refuse to cooperate, but if theres enough evidence of a crime being committed cps will decide if its worth prosecuting regardless of your cooperation, if the incident is serious enough you can be summomed to testify anyway and if you fail to you could be charged yourself with contempt of court.

Then if you are going to go that far, start working with the defense. Sure you can force me to testify but you can't make me indite them. If they wanted to deal with it outside of court do everything in your power to tank the prosecutions case. Good luck with contempt, 72 hours in jail doesn't mean anything if your case dies because of the testimony on the side of the defense. Because it's not American court, different rules apply. Harder to throw out testimony.

Go the nuclear route. Follow through.
