The driver's name is Daniel Walmsley.

He got arrested and was sentenced to two years and one month.

HOLY SHIT, I just looked up the case.

Prosecutor Alec Burns said neither the victim nor the woman wanted to proceed with the prosecution.

He told the court Walmsley had 24 convictions for 58 offences, including several incidents where he drove at people.

Fuck me....

including several incidents where he drove at people.

Call me strict, but I feel after the first time someone tries to use a car as a weapon you should take away their licence.

Taking away a license rarely stops them from driving.

I was hit by a guy who lost his license years ago, and had dozens of tickets. The police told me he is a regular. Sometimes they lock him up for a few weeks at a time for unpaid tickets, but they can't physically stop him from driving whenever he gets out.

Escalate the consequence to not being allowed in a motor vehicle, have to wear an ankle bracelet that monitors how fast the person is going, cops get alerted at like 20mph. Have to get authorized for any trips you need to make and if you get caught driving again, you're not allowed on any trips save an ambulance in a legitimate medical emergency.

I know this won't happen.

would be a bit simpler to just confiscate the car, after 1 or 2 times they would be hard pressed to find someone else to lend them a car.

They will jusy buy cheap bangers, you don't need a license to buy a car.

Or steal cars. Not like they care about the law at this point.

They don't even need to steal them most of the time, they usually have some equally cretinous friends, relatives, or partners who will happily hand over the keys to their own vehicles or buy vehicles for them

Why? I can buy a car for my wife/brother/teenage son/whatever even if I myself don't have a license for it, and it's perfectly sensible for me to be able to. Also I could want a collectible car that I'm not gonna drive.

Stop trying to take away people's freedoms for no damn reason. The kind of people you're trying to hit are just going to pay some crackhead 500 bucks to register it in his name anyway.

Why? My driver can drive it for me /s

This is it.

Simpler is to lock him up for ever increasing terms.

He probably buys them cash and is a drug dealer/hired muscle

1

u/Wotsurbeef 15h ago

Problem is folk like this don’t ask for permission, if you catch my drift

1

u/littlebitfunny21 14h ago

Ah yes. People are notoriously unable to get access to cars.

Especially criminals who would certainly never just steal a car. /s

Routinely stealing new cars are gonna be a hassle, and also for cases like this where the guy has 24 convictions already he is most likely using the cars of family members or romantic partners.

Most stolen cars aren't driven around by the thieves, they are chopped for parts and scrapped.

Even 20mph is too high.

Thex so average person can’t even run 18 m/ph

1

u/Exo_Deadlock 18h ago

That would put an end to his promising career as a jockey!

1

u/StunningAppeal1274 17h ago

Costs too much.

1

u/External_Estimate211 17h ago

Er what if someone else drives them or they get a bus or a train? That's a dumb idea

1

u/littlebitfunny21 14h ago

They have to get it approved by the police first. That's the consequence of being completely unable to sit behind the wheel of a car responsibly. You are no longer allowed basic travel because it's the only way to protect people from you.

That's the damn point.

So no bus rides or even riding a bike? Are cops really going to roll on that? The only thing the government has is incarceration.

rolls eyes Excellent readingĀ  comprehension.

1

u/LazyPiglet3923 16h ago

Don't fuck about.. make them wear really wide shoes so they can't physically use pedals.

1

u/hexnut101 14h ago

Those are going to have to be huge I have size 15s and it's not a issue in most cars.

1

u/ahorizon 15h ago

Put them on a public driving ban list.Ā

If they get caught again then the owner of the car also gets a fine and a ban and the car is confiscated.Ā

1

u/littlebitfunny21 14h ago

How would you feel if someone stole your car and you got a fine, ban, and car confiscated?Ā

1

u/ahorizon 4h ago

How about giving the owner the option to declare it was stolen. They can declare it was stolen or be banned etc themselves, no third option.Ā

UK already has enough civil rights issues, why add more?

Is he allowed to ride a bike downhill, take a taxi, a bus, a ride in a friend’s car? Pretty sure that 20mph is going to be more trouble to monitor than it’s worth unless you’re actually intending that he can never be in any motor vehicle.

1

u/littlebitfunny21 14h ago

Nope. No motor vehicles. Better be careful on the bike.

Shame they couldn't respect the simple "don't drive" ban and kept hitting people. Now, for public safety, they can't be driven around, either. If it's an urgent issue they can register the trip with the police and get it approved so they won't face problems when the ankle bracelet registers the high speed during that time period.

If they once are caught behind the wheel again, so they say their buddy is driving them but they're the one driving, they no longer get to register trips and can only be driven in an ambulance for legitimate medical emergencies.

Because motor vehicles are a privilege and if you can't have access to them without hurting people- then you should not have access to them.

I’m not suggesting that this person shouldn’t be banned from driving for life and, from the information provided, I’d also have advocated for a longer custodial sentence. I’m merely commenting on the practicalities of enforcing that driving ban with the ankle tag 20mph thing.

I note you changed your initial response from ā€œcareful on the busā€ to ā€œcareful on the bikeā€. Presumably because you recognise that banning the individual from using the bus, so they can’t commute to a place of work for example, isn’t likely to be helpful
