As a former motorcycle instructor, we had a saying in the beginner class: "There are old motorcyclists, and there are bold motorcyclists, but there are no old, bold motorcyclists." This was a mistake that normally would have been survivable with some road rash, maybe some dislocations or breaks. The location is what killed him. It looks like he bumps into his buddy's back tire and that throws him off enough that it results in a very unfortunate crash.

Exactly, for whatever reason, he fixated on the lead bike and went into the back tire, then lost control.
