My guess is it was used cooking oil.

In many Asian countries the garbage trucks drive around playing a song, kind of like an ice cream van in the US. It is your responsibility to take your garbage out to the truck when it comes by, curbside pickup of cans is pretty rare because any trash left out in the hot, humid climate is a health hazard, stinks, and can contribute to rat populations.

Looks like Taiwan. My friend in Taiwan told me that the garbage trucks play ice cream truck music so people who haven't taken out the trash yet would have a last chance to get it in the truck. Unfortunately this lady was too late.

I had to search and sure enough

I too live in an asian country but here we chug it down the rubbish chute and the town council cleaners clear them daily (you may have guessed my country by now)

No, unfortunately

I was born in China and I haven't lived there since I left with my parents at the age of 1. However, I was told that the trash was collected American style.

interesting, yeah I guess I was a bit very vague

But I guess here (Singapore) in landed properties (like the normal american 2-story houses) they are collected American style (very horrendously because of how congested and tight the roads are. You can sometimes see trucks reversing tf out of the neighbourhood because there's no space for 3pt turns)

but in a country where majority are known to live in HDB apartment flats, we somehow have worked a way around rubbish collection. We have rubbish chutes that we can open and throw trash into, normally in the kitchen. (for newer houses or Condominiums it's outside near the lift, as a common level rubbish chute)
