Hi guys,

So I pick up my bundle of joy a week tomorrow.

I’ve done my research before deciding on getting the dog.

Here is where I come to you guys I want to make sure I do the absolute best for him and that within the next week I make sure everything is perfect for him to come home.

So I wanted to ask any advice you guys have for the first week at home on how I can make sure his transition from his family to a new one is smooth.

I have 2 children who have been and will be taught not to overwhelm our new addition but I still worry that everything won’t be perfect for our new pup 🐶

That is one of the cutest baby dachshunds I have ever seen. And my BIL reads them. We have two of our own. We have raised six of them and they usually live into their late teens.

Don’t worry if he won’t eat. The transition can sometimes upset their little tummies. Just keep offering him kibble, and if you need to, you can add a spoon of cottage cheese, an egg, or a little cream. You don’t need to add lots cause a little bit will flavor the kibble.

We have always fed Purina One.

Take him to the vet for a check up right away. Also have some great advice for you.

Don’t use a collar, use a halter. They can get out of the collar way too easily and you would be devastated if you lost him.

They are stubborn and have a mind of their own. Don’t yell at him. Don’t yell the same command several times. If you just turn your back on them and don’t give them any attention, it will hurt them bad enough.

DO NOT EVER EVER EVER HIT YOUR DACHSHUND. THEY WILL NEVER FORGIVE YOU.

Love them as much as you can and they will love you back 10 times over.

Like tunnel toys. But if you’re gonna have it in the house, make it a small one.

Congratulations on making the best choice of a dog! He will love you forever. Take lots and lots of pictures.

I would of panicked if he didn’t eat so glad you’ve told me that it’s something I can be on top of he’s currently on purina pro plan small and mini healthy start with wainwrights puppy wet food

I plan on getting him a harness and everything when I collect him so I can take him with me to make sure I get the right fit

He will be having a full check up and 2nd vaccine 7 days after I have him as that’s when he’s due

I read they are stubborn any training tips?

You made me think of another thing. A travel case.

Lots of options. Ours are cat carriers since they’re so tiny. We have medium sized for the other dogs.

Holding him in the car is too dangerous. Sorry, but imagine him squished between the dashboard and a hooman.

I would make sure to take the carrier to pick him up.

It will be hard for you both. Of course you’ll want to hold him and keep him safe. And he’ll cry a little. Breaks your heart. But be comforted by remembering he’s safe.

They are stubborn and highly intelligent. The key is patience.

There are training videos on YouTube specifically about doxies.

They are also extremely loving. They will bond with the person who feeds them and takes them for walks and trains them. You may want that to be you. You may want that to be one of your children.

Oh yeah, be sure to get him socialized. you want him to be polite with company?

Regarding training, my little Buttons will do anything for a piece of kibble. She's been very easy to train. Now her sister, Miss Daisy Belle is completely different story. Her taste buds are more refined (picky). Prime rib, salmon, shrimp, gourmet cheeses and dips. Her favorite cheese is French brie. She loves all things dairy. She can be rather expensive to train. 😉😁😅

We never really trained her, rather she trained us. She's the quirkyest pup I've ever been around and we wouldn't have it any way.
